10:00 AM
As soon as you write to your drive anywhere your data will increasingly be overwritten.

damn, ok
well from what i see
Oh shit!
i pressed spacebar
and now i see: list of partition type
how can i go back?

no idea... :/

i was smart enough to create log file

start from the beginning?

one sec

10:03 AM
now my work is increasingly overgrowing my mind here.... absorbers

Ok sorry, I will leave you at peace

there is no peace here :P

damn
I have to run deep search again
takes 2 hours
fml

1 TB is 999GB too many for a quick solution.

yup
one question
since i have to start over
is it wise to choose EFI GPT instead of Intel?

10:09 AM
I think you had a GPT layout for the EFI thingy but I am not 100% sure on that.

lets see what happens

<-- always wanted to play with EFI/GPT on a VM but...

If only I knew what the h*ll you were talking about </ignorance>

may be old partitions...?

10:13 AM
unfortunately I have too little experience with GPT and EFI.

I really feel this looks promising

Awesome!
Now recover!

Your Linux partitions are where???

looks like they are gone
might got lost in the process of growing partition and moving files :(

probably

10:15 AM
because that was when it all crashed
ok..... what button to push.............
stupid user is stupid

push on beam me to a better world

I can't find it... shall we go with the testdisk results instead?

Do a deeper search to see if your data are still there somewhere.
if not: ---> PhotoRec

Ok, i did
let the waiting game commence
ok @Takkat

let someone give you an external drive first.. you'll need it for file recovery.

10:18 AM
I might know someone

1TB recovery is an overnight project anyway.

Q: Have to run Repair-Boot after booting windows

Mr UniverseI have grub installed as my boot loader for dual booting windows 8 and Ubuntu. It works fine as long as I'm only booting Ubuntu but as soon as I boot windows, something stops working. The next time I reboot my machine, there is no grub menu, nothing. My BIOS seems to think there is no operating s...

@Braiam I finally got it working! askubuntu.com/a/406296/172081 The mirroring works, but I still need to figure out a way to check if the self healing works.
I.E somehow mount one of these drive and flip a bit in file X. Then check the log for self-healing updates.

11:50 AM
@seth i already put a close vote on askubuntu.com/questions/401920/… but reverted back

Q: Canonical Apprenticeships?

Daniel KirkbyI am currently a student doing my 4th year at college passing 3 separate courses, My issue is that when I finish my course I will need to get a job or some sort of way to get income, I was thinking on going into freelance website design but that is a different story, I love Ubuntu and I love the ...

Oli
@AvinashRaj It's a duplicate but I'm not sure that the older one is any better. I'm also shocked that the older one is so new. I'm certain there's a much older version of that question.

i think askubuntu.com/questions/406346/canonical-apprenticeships it's a question on behalf of many

12:35 PM
@AmithKK not bad not bad :)

I have a question tho

as long as it is about ubuntu it is ontopic >:)

@AmithKK there are some Kids in the chat room. So, Please....

jrg
@Dew he is one of the kids...

@Nkciy84 short (as I have little time because of work) Linux partition still not there --> deeper search. Then list the files if any...

@takkat Yeah I saw that ahaha
@AmithKK You're quite welcome. I'm good. Sorry, I basically just came to chat to leave that question here then just left XD

Dew
@Takkat @Mochan o/

@Takkat Deeper search on gpt efi gave a lot of jibberish. A very long list of partitions that didn't make any sense. Scrolling from top to bottom costed about 3 minutes, so I went with the 'regular' search. I've found that the third and fourth MS DATA partitions had the linux files
@Takkat Everything is there

2:20 PM
@Nkciy84 you may try to copy some of your files to an USB stick to see if they are alive. As long as you don't [write] you won't do much further harm.

@Takkat on it

High guys, do you know how I can edit a file in vim without manipulating the time stamp?

@Takkat Listening now, and working

2:31 PM
+1 for nine inch nails ;)

@gentmatt touch it afterwards?

@Takkat Another way to try and make this situation likable LOL

@Nkciy84 what about other linux files? File where permissions may be an issue?

Oh, yeah, I forgot due to my euphoria... let me see

@Nkciy84 look for most recent files too.

2:35 PM
@Takkat Well, some of it is damaged and some is not
@Takkat A lot is written in red, but it seems that a lot of other files are accessable
I just checked by copying to an SD
vmlinuz is damaged though..

The red ones could still be recovered with PhotoRec (but then not filenames, folders, permissions).
Are permissions there? I am worried about the MSDOS thing...

@Takkat how do i know?

Check file properties on the copy but only if you had copied them on ext4. Otherwise they are lost on the copy.

@Takkat it seems to be ok when copied to the SD

Hi all... I've seen a number of threads recently reporting nvidia drivers to just crash with a black screen on boot, needing to use the command line apt-get purge to fix it. Anyone knows if this always happened? Or maybe something is badly broken with X integration with nvidia drivers in 13.10?

2:43 PM
@Nkciy84 looks good to me. Now go and copy all your files on an external drive to be sure to have them rescued.

@Takkat Working on obtaining a drive, thanks
@Takkat what should I do after that is done?

@Nkciy84 you may want to rescue still missing files with PhotoRec (overnight process, really).

@Takkat I assume you are suggesting to do a fresh installation after backing up all the files

If the backup is o.k, all files are good, and you feel like it you may "write" the partition table from testdisk to see how much damage there is. Be warned - you may have to reinstall al lot, if not all, but your data are safe.

@Takkat Thank you very much

2:48 PM
If all runs smooth you may try without a re-install but this is the best possible case, hence unlikely.
<-- one time completely recovered a drive without data loss

We'll see. In the first place I am happy that the damage seems rather small and there is a way to repair most of it. I am very gratefull for the time you spent on this. Thanks a million man...

@Nkciy84 one word on PhotoRec still: it will give you all files of the type you specified that ever were stored on the 1TB drrive with random numbers as name but appropriate extension in a single directory... I wouldn't want to sort these out, really.

@Takkat: there's supposed to be a script to sort that out

@Takkat Thanks for the heads-up.

But in case one of these files is vital, you may want to do that anyway.
@JourneymanGeek Scripts can help for photos and mp3, true.

3:01 PM
yup, anywhere there's meta-tags

Ok, first steps first... On the top of my list of things to is get myself a 1TB HDD for backup
I'm already in deep over my head, really.. so, yeah

you may need 2 of these if you plan to PhotoRec,
but you may be lucky and get almost all files rescued from testdisk.

Let's hope for the last
After this is over, I think the first thing I should do
is change my avater
from noob to veteran or something, lol
and secondly, get a bottle of scotch

lol - teach everybody to not change partitions without a backup first.

@Braiam Sorry, I couldn't answer quicker because my internet connection was really horrible. :/
Touching the file and changing the time will not work in my scenario.
This is about my RAID setup again. (askubuntu.com/questions/406096/…)

3:11 PM
@Takkat Wearing a blue robe and stuff, becoming the backup guru of the modern age...

I copy a picture to the RAID. Then I enter one of the volumes and open the picture in vim. In vim I flip just one bit. Then I safe and leave.
Because the 'corrupted' file has a newer time stamp, the mirrored picture is replaced with the corrupted picture and not the other way around.

3:47 PM
yeah development. an answer for trusty on the other might be alright, but who knows that bug might be fixed really soon - and the accepted answerer answered on both..

4:01 PM
It's quite interesting what changing just one bit can do to a picture, but I can't do this stealthy (without changing the time stamp).
Before:
After:
Oh really, I can't upload the second picture?!?!?! Well, here's a screenshot of the picture when I opened with eog:

Oli
@gentmatt I read that article too :)

beat that
My internet speed is so slow that speedtest's download test won't even start
2

@Oli Yeah, that was a really nice read.
@Oli Any idea how I can change that one bit stealthy?

@gentmatt again, you can use touch to change the timestamp of the file or find a way to break vim so it doesn't change it...

@Braiam The problem is that when I save and quit vim, the change is immediately mirrored.

Oli
4:12 PM
@gentmatt No. You'd need to badger the data directly without going through the filesystem (dangerous dd stuff)

@Oli Well, this drive is to experiment for now. So I'd be willing to do anything. (Expect physical damage) :)
But how else can I verify if the self-healing thingy works for me?

most of the time we trust that it works... until it doesn't...
@JourneymanGeek any idea how to damage a single bit of a raid array to test if the raid works as expected?

Oli
You wouldn't be able to. You'd need to work out where the file lives in the filesystem (stat should help there), unmount it (it will have to be offline - the article says this too) and then change the data... But I'm not sure on the technical low-level writing side of things.

Oh.... :(

Oli
But yeah, this is all stuff I'd definitely only consider doing with a virtual filesystem

4:18 PM
Well, thanks for the talk anyway. I don't think that 'simple me' will be able to do this then. So I'll try to find more documentation to verify if the self-healing should work :P

What happens if a hardware fault causes the timestap to mess up?

(Oh really, since when do gifs not work...)

Can that seriously happen?

Oli
@gentmatt Well, I've asked... askubuntu.com/questions/406463/…

4:27 PM
@AmithKK Sure, why would nature ignore the bits on the disc which store time-stamps?
@Oli Ha!

I just found a loophole in raid
Time to shut down bushinesses

@Oli dont think you can :-X

@Rinzwind Well, the arstechnica reporter did this intentionally in his picture.

thinking out loud...

@Oli not sure here you will get answer...

4:30 PM
make a dd copy. mount it elsewhere. change a file. restore the dd copy. remount it?

What I did (but which is not what is being asked specifically in this question) is:

or would that be an acceptible change? :S

vim my_pic.jpeg
:%!xxd -b
change one bit
:%!xxd -r
:wq

@oli I would ask in comments on that site how he did it O Bug him to death >:)

@Oli Isn't that a U&L question?

Oli
4:38 PM
@AmithKK It could be... But it isn't :)
It could be a ServerFault or a SuperUser question too. With a bit of rephrasing, it's probably on topic on StackOverflow too.

Santosa SandyI am just wondering for answer for my question. Is there any waiting time average for a question to be answered in this forum? It would be helpful because we can make a decision to ask to another person in the office (for example lecturer in university, etc.)? Thank you

5:49 PM
Hey @Rinzwind where stays that harddisk now he?

@Nkciy84 I'd throw it out the window :=D

@Rinzwind I got some good advice and help from Takkat, now I'm just waiting for someone who is nice enough to lend me a large enough hdd for backup

cool :) maybe there is hope

@Oli I trow it in both chat rooms to get more eyeballs

@Rinzwind I was able to restore some files and got great feedback from testdisk, so yeah

:P

@Rinzwind err... I know he's talking in spanish... I can read spanish, I don't understand what he means after "carga y luego"
@Seth anyone have a "unclear" vote for that? @Rinzwind?

7:29 PM
@Braiam sure

1 hour later…
8:43 PM
@Braiam probably not dupe-able to black screen. image does not show is "no boot splash" and input not supported is probably refresh rate or resolution differences between the tower and the monitor (or it's an aux monitor, or it isn't plugged in)...
And it seems this is a common problem for AOC monitors from a cursory google search - even for high resolution/refresh rate Windows users.

@hbdgaf those "or"s doesn't make me want to duplicate it...
@hbdgaf then a hw failure?

Q: Ubuntu: how do you swap eth0 and eth1? (Ubuntu 13.10 server in a VirtualBox VM)

MartyMacGyverI installed Ubuntu 13.10 server (64-bit) in a VirtualBox 4.3.6 VM (Windows host) with one NAT adapter assigned. The only non-default software selected during installation was OpenSSH. @Seth i loled at that too, but running 12.04 for app-dev testing in vbox on 13.10 is a reasonable - even encourage-able solution.

This IMO is a must have feature in a file-manager: askubuntu.com/q/117743/36315
Linked answer: askubuntu.com/a/187351/36315 Hate those
When installing official packages via update-manager, the change log is available from a tab in the GUI (next to description). These change logs are not available for PPA packages. Could this facility be added? When discussed on IRC #launchpad, there was some concern this might blur the boundaries between official and PPA packages and result in unfounded trust in the PPA packages.

Q: How can I flip a single bit in a file?

OliI want to intentionally damage a file in order to test the claims that btrfs can heal itself. The article talks about taking the filesystem off, damaging a photo by "flipping" a single bit and then remounting it. In older filesystems this would just be corrupted but it's supposed to fix itself in...

wow... that's a silly way to go about it. seems like he wants someone to write debugfs for bartfs if it doesn't already exist. related question + dd and offset stackoverflow.com/questions/3444844/…
on a lighter note, i got my django db sync slowness problem under control by putting 13.10 on 1.6 instead of the older 1.5 with pip... and using bulk_create and queryset.last()

11:52 PM
@hbdgaf it exist, it's called (reads strugee answer) btrfs-corrupt-block

i saw that too. it was just a thing.
done coding for the night. closing all windows and killing some zombies. it's been fun @Braiam - later on. tag me if you see something you want another brain on. i haven't forgotten about uberwriter packaging, i just have more pressing issues with deadlines.
