@VPeric I think its great, I'll hook you up an account, then you can upload a draft with some general introduction
given that most of our users (me included) are clueless about it

A: Medical questions

ArgalatyrI would add a category to the effect: "Answering the question requires the answerer to make or infer a diagnosis, i.e. the practice of medicine". This is one reason (there are many) such questions are not allowed on the Wikipedia reference desks. I really think this is an issue for this site, ...

Have a look at the Kainaw Criterion he linked: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Kainaw/Kainaw%27s_criterion
To determine if a question on the reference desk is a request for medical advice, Kainaw's criterion is:
“ Can the question be answered completely without providing a diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment advice? ”
The answer to the criterion must be either "yes" or "no" and is the opposite of the answer to the question, "Is this a request for medical advice?"

@VPeric Regarding your Meta comment, I still wish they would revisit it
while nothing prohibits us from asking questions about other types of sport
the problem is that new users (which make up like 80% of our visits) don't see it that way
I also think that our title gives us a bias towards general health and diet questions, rather than being focused on exercise
anyone interested in exercise now thinks we're all about food junkies and weight lifters

11:03 AM
@Ivo Yeah, when you say "Fitness", you'll get: overweight people (check), runners (check), cyclists (check?), bodybuilders (check!), martial artists (check), perhaps rockclimbers or other sports closely related to physical performance (not yet)... and only then maybe someone interested in a particular sport.

@VPeric indeed, its an overly broad term that basically says nothing at all and at least in Dutch is a synonym for going to the gym
by now almost all other proposals on Area51 have been shutdown, making Roberts point even more moot

Perhaps a better title would have been "Exercise and nutrition"

well we've had some discussions about this in the SE-moderator room and we couldn't really come up with a great title :P

I don't know then.
Fact is, the site is very, very small right now.

I proposed Fitness & Sports, because fitness would cover our current scope (including anything about nutrition if its related to exercise) while Sport indicate we wouldn't mind other forms of exercise
@VPeric we only have like 100 active users, which is ridiculously small

11:07 AM
I've answered some random old questions for lack of anything better to do.
We've only got a couple of questions per day, too.

you can help try and clear these away ;)
I've stopped trying to answer every question, because the site aint called "Ask Ivo"
5

Yeah, I saw these but my expertise isn't at Ivo-level yet. ;)

@VPeric well I studied Human Movement Science, I don't hope anyone who didn't study something like that would be at my level of expertise ;)

hehe

but I shy away from nutrition questions as much as possible, which also means I loose out on 25% of our questions and especially the most popular (more votes) ones

11:13 AM
Yeah, nutrition figures into most of the questions posted here.
Either directly or indirectly ("How do I lose weight by...?" -- "Eat less")

@VPeric that's the basic gist of it yeah :)
I think we need to write a blog post about that ;P

Sure, go for it!
About the blog, I'll try to write up something about Tabata but don't expect it for a few more days.

@VPeric no hurry, we already have a post from Barbie scheduled and I have another post for friday probably

I also can't seem to figure out how to read the other two posts there (unpublished)
What frequency are you hoping for?

@VPeric ah I would need to change your level
@VPeric well that depends on who wants to write
the difference with SU (for me) is that this is truly my home turf :P

11:17 AM
Ok, doesn't matter then, I was just interested.

plus there's so much to write about, that if there's no questions to answer I could write a blog post instead
I could simply start paraphrasing/summarizing my exercise physiology books
to explain some of the concepts to all the clueless 'newbies' here
@VPeric try to look again :)

yup, got it now
And yeah, I suppose that's true.
If I ever end up writing more than that one port on Tabata, it will probably be things from personal experience and stuff that worked for me.

besides if we write a question of the week (assuming we have one), one random post
@VPeric that's fine. I'd like to read diaries too

I think fitness is a broad enough area to support both types of articles.

like Nathan who started to running and now runs 10ks, that's amazing for someone who never ran much before
these stories can be quite inspiring for those who want to give it a try too

11:21 AM
I'm not so sure about a classical diary, but a "How I managed to do 15 pullups" would be something I could write (and would like to read!)
Yeah.

I've bought Vibrams to try them myself, so I could actually talk about it from experience
@VPeric well if you're working towards a marathon, it could be interesting to share your training program + progress every month or so
if you participated in some championship and set some PR or finished an Iron Man, that's always cool
and from the nutritional side, I think it would be interesting to post some recipe for some healthy meal with some pics of the process

Agreed! (not that I've done any of that, but still)

just because its fun :P

Yes, that could be good, but on the other hand, that might be stepping too much into the "Culinary" category.

@VPeric sure, but that's the advantage of a blog, we get to share what our audience finds interesting
and it shouldn't have to be something weekly (unless we have a great cook around)
but its just the point: there's enough to write about!

11:24 AM
I agree.

too bad we don't have any cyclists to write about the Tour de France
