12:00 AM
The link to meta is I think actually more obvious now - it's under help (which is understandable to new users) and it has a description.
@SAJ14SAJ I don't like discussing statements like that, sorry.

Except we both no anything hidden behind a drop down essentially does not exist.

That's not really a valid argument here.
It had a top-level link that was essentially useless.

How was it useless?
I used it every day.

It didn't mean anything except to users who already know about it.
The real issue is people managing to find it in the first place.

It was there for explorers. As was the chat link

12:01 AM
A link that you have to click on to find out what it is?
I know it said meta, but imagine that it said unbkuhnvals

That would take up too much space :-)

That's about as meaningful as "meta" to someone who doesn't already know they want to click on it.
But "help" has meaning, people will click on it, and a dropdown that people will actually decide to click on is not so nonexistent.
I know it's an extra click away for everyone who knows it's there, that part's not great, but it's an added click, not completely ruined functionality.
The lack of chat link is worse - it's hidden behind a dropdown that new users won't click on.

I still haven't found the chat link again.\

It's not in a good place - it's under the site name dropdown.
Again, that's why I said someone should go ask specifically about that on meta.SO.

Wow.
Why not you?

12:05 AM
Because I don't have time to write it properly at the moment, and definitely didn't earlier.

I upvoted a couple of people.

And something like this is not writing it properly:

Q: StackExchange drop down hiding chat, blog and log out, concerns

John RiselvatoTook a few seconds to find how to get back to chat on SO. I quickly found that it was hiding inside the StackExchange drop down along with Blog and Log out. Having these links inside the "site switcher" seems a tad out of place and calls for concern personally. Any ideas for an alternative to t...

Catch-all lists of grievances are as useless on meta as "how do I brine a turkey, how do I pick a turkey, how do I test the temperature" here.

They have the whole UX site but I guess they don't run these things past those folks :-)

Yeah, though while often those folks are very right, they can also sometimes be a bit unrepresentative and overzealous.

Compared to us on food?

12:09 AM
Compared to the world?
There's a lot of very strong opinions about UI design, with all the baggage that can come with that.

Well, the thing is, even though I posted about it on our meta, I don't think they are going change anything. They never do. They never post road maps. We will just get used to it and adapt.

Yeah.

Hi Cerby.

It is more of an issue for new users anyway.
Less so for us.

Q: When is the RHS chat box shown?

JefromiThere's sometimes a RHS box advertising for chat - the one with avatars of people recently in chat and so on. After plenty of time using the site, I have absolutely no idea how it decides whether to appear. Given the frequency I do see it, I'm not sure if newer users are likely to notice it. (And...

12:15 AM
Je te upvote.

I've tried reloading 10 times on a question page, but chat does not appear in the side bar. — Cerberus 15 secs ago

Yeah, I mean, it would make sense to me if it didn't show up as much for us because we're already here.
But I think that might be overly optimistic, and it's just in a random rotation.

They said it was in random rotation in 2011, and you're being linked to that post today.

12:46 AM
One thing I've noticed about on-line communities is that we don't like the look of our stuff to change! I don't like it!
@Cerberus that's how I got here. Do I need to bookmark chat now?

@Jolenealaska It's still at the bottom of most pages.
And in the menu that appears if you click the button in the upper left corner, ish.

Gee, I'm observant. I've never noticed it there!
I'm planning another brine experiment this weekend. 6 chicken breasts, copious volumes of 6 different herbs. If my theory holds true, I should be able to sense sage.
We'll see.

That's a lot of chicken.
More is better, everyone knows that.

I cook a bunch at a time anyway. Shred it, freeze it in little ziplocks for soup.

1:30 AM
@Jolenealaska It's two clicks - the stack exchange menu at the top left, then there's a link.
@Cerberus They said it was rotation (not random) and "a few loads" but it's really easy to not see it after tons of loads.

I thought someone said random?
Someone also said "you should see it after a few reloads".

A: Chat side-bar not showing up on Server Fault

Marc GravellServerfault does have this; but as with all right-hand panels, it is on rotation. It also only shows within questions (not the home page, AFAIK). It might take a few loads, but is definitely there.

Yes, I addressed the "few loads" thing right there in what you're responding to.
And like I said, it doesn't say random there.

Oh, it was a person named random... facepaw
Any idea who this might be?
(Direct image link doesn't work.)

@Cerberus OMG, I'm too lazy to change the channel (bad batteries). Nigella has admitted in court that she has used cocaine on perhaps six occasions prior to 2010. The show is making it sound like the scandal of the century. Good Grief.

@Jolenealaska Right, that scandal was too boring and stupid for me to actually read. I just liked the picture!

1:37 AM
She is pretty!
All right, I can't stand it. Must. Move. To. Turn. Off. Stupid. Trash. TV!

Do it!

DONE!

Yay!
I'm so proud.

That crap is just toxic.

That's one of the things I hated about television, that you just keep watching when it's on.
Even when there's nothing on.

1:43 AM
I went for years without TV. I still don't have cable. You know families that can't appropriately feed their children still pay $100+ per month for their preferred cable package.
I am excited about something on TV tomorrow though. Sound of Music Live.

That much?
Isn't there a cheaper option that has the major channels?

Internet on the other hand...*from my cold dead hands*.

Here the joke goes that the poorer the family, the bigger the plasma screen.
Yes, the Internet is quite another thing.

Yes, some families pay more than that because they feel the need for ALL the premium channels.

I used to have neither. For a couple of months. I lived next to the library, so I used the Internet there, a couple of times a day.
@Jolenealaska That's odd, if you're poor. But then people are odd.

1:47 AM
That's kind of a joke for me (the huge TV). I inherited what I refer to as my ridiculous television from my mother. Otherwise, I'd have a small tube TV, or none at all.

And by next I mean I could hear the "ding-dong" they sounded inside the library building at closing time (23:45) from inside my house.
Small tube TVs are cute.

My neighbor goes to the food bank at least once a month, but he pays $100/month for cable.
I think cable here in Alaska (more than other states) starts at about $60, but I could be wrong.

Wow.
Is it possible that he has plenty of money but just wants free food?
@Jolenealaska Starts at 60? That's a lot!
Let me check what it is here, I've never had a subscription.

No, he's that broke, but he can't imagine not always having something he wants to watch.

Heh.
How about the Internet, one would suggest in vain.
I see cable television for € 18,20 here.

1:53 AM
I don't think he owns a book or a library card. What a putz.
That's what, about $35?

$25.

Oh he's got internet too. For some reason he likes facebook.

And that's including all taxes.
For € 42, you get cable + decent Internet + phone line.

For $25, I might get cable just for The Food Network.

You can't watch that online?

1:56 AM
Not much of it. They hold on to their stuff pretty tight.
Every episode ever of Good Eats used to be on YouTube, but not anymore.

Hmm.
Too bad.
Oh, you can also get Internet + TV for € 33,50.

Kittens are free.

I pay that just for internet. Again, it's just more expensive up here - In Iowa I'd probably pay about $30 for all the speed i need.
Not quite SAJ! There's neutering, shots, food and cat litter - at a minimum.

None of that counts, only initial investment.

@Jolenealaska Even in the country?
@SAJ14SAJ Just as with old cars, eh?

2:01 AM
Cerby, you really don't want a breeding cat, of either gender.
@Cerberus I would imagine.

Once we had to do emergency surgery on a kitty. We did an emergency Barbie's Pursectomy to the tune of $1500.

I am not familiar with that organ.
How do you get one into the cat?

Organisms. So expensive.

Neither were we until we washed it off. It did a number on her, almost killed her.
I'm pretty sure the cat something to do with it!
That and friggin tinsel.
And string.
The best though was a dog. Leopard skin panties! It was funny to ask the owner if she wanted them back.

My cats just throw up fur balls.

2:07 AM
Yep, I've seen some pretty amazing fur balls too!

Does this video work for you?
It works neither in Chrome nor in Firefox for me.

I have askeed them not to do that, but they don't listen.

Nope, no video, but the scenery rings a bell.

OK thanks!
@Jolenealaska Really? That's unpossible!

You know I used to work there, Cer?

2:10 AM
In Amsterdam? I didn't know.
Oh, you meant the NSA.
I didn't know that either!
Are you supposed to tell us that?

Meh, I don't know anything scary anymore.

But you did?

I worked in the basement duing the first Gulf War.

Oh...
What did you do there?
I remember GWI.
As a little boy, my parents told me a big country had attacked a small country.
And, yes, I am aware of the dangling modifier, but I don't really consider it dangling.

Yes, I had a very, very high security clearance, but the nature of it was that the info changed at shift change and leaving during your shift was forbidden.
We were locked into our work room, but if one of us managed to escape, we probably would have been shot.

2:17 AM
So the information your memory could take outside the building was no longer useful the moment your shift was up?
Shot, really?

Correct

That is...extreme.

Shot, really
Yeah, well, security was extreme in the basement of NSA.
Nobody tried it.

What if you had a medical emergency?

And while the sensitive info changed over, we hung out in a giant safe for about 10 minutes - then it opened to the other side.
It never happened on my watch, but such a thing is a big friggen deal. The person in need of care would get it, but all hell would break loose.

2:23 AM
I see.

The paramedics would probably be allowed into the giant safe, but wouldn't be able take the patient away until the sensitive info could be changed over. We did have a hospital in The Building (that's what we called it)

So what could an enemy have done with that information?
Was it really that destructive?

Listened in to troop movements, that kind of thing.
So yeah, potentially it could have cost everything.

2:48 AM
What's the difference between Gold Stars and Black Stars?

Whether you starred it or not.

Ah, yes, there is a pattern! :)

Hey, I have a question: cranberries are bitter.

@Cerberus And also, oranges are orange colored! :-)

Tart, they're tart!

2:57 AM
@SAJ14SAJ The answer is: 7.

Actually, I found that question to be less headshaking than pyrex casserole dish on an electric burner. Funny though - Again SAJ and I wrote our short little answers simultaneously.

6 hours later…
9:17 AM
Oooo, new SE header thing.
I don't like it, the black is too intrusive.

9:38 AM
Hi Tall
Funny thing...
Ooooo
was going to be my first word too, but for another reason entirely.
I've already expressed my dislike of the icky changes.
However, Amazon keeps trying to sell me Pumpkin Pie Spice coffee.
Ooooo

@Jolenealaska that's more eeewwwwww

exactly
I really like Hazelnut flavored coffee
I like vanilla just fine
I'll take caramel in a pinch
but how sick do you have to be to think that Pumpkin Pie belongs in your coffee cup?
Or worse yet...Candy cane?
I hate Christmas.

lol
bah humbug!

You said it!

9:53 AM
I like it
but for different reasons these days than I used to
I used to like it because I got stuff!

Really? Not just 'cause you like giving away cookies, that doesn't count.
Oh, yeah well, my dad still sends me a check...I like that.

Now I like it because it makes my daughter happy, and because of the food

It's kind of funny since we are both such total atheists. He enjoys giving me money, I enjoy taking it.

Ha
Christmas isn't a religious thing
or at least, certainly not a Christian thing

On the Twelveth day of Christmas....

9:59 AM
it was just hijacked by them to stop pagans celebrating Yule, or Saturnalia

My daddy gave to me..

No one has a fucking clue if Jesus was even born, let alone when
He is one of about 6 deities supposedly born on December 25th, of a virgin

but...by golly, mom had a hymen!

Like Buddha's mother
and Zoroaster

Was that a lightening strike?

10:01 AM
and Dionysus
bizarre male fear of the birth canal
along with menstrual blood
and, for some reason, pigs

I'm laughing my ass off. Superstition is so weird.

Indeed
Also the cognotive dissonance involved in thinking your religion is right, while others are wrong for exactly the same reason that yours is

half of my family is ultra religious...the other half is like me. Is it any wonder that I never go back there during December?

I said it to my mother a while back - if you were born in Ancient Greece, you'd be just as sure Zeus, Apollo et al existed as you are Jesus did now
she had no reply
people just don't subject it to reason
Christmas is full of inconsistencies
The bible takes great pains to show how Jesus is descended from David through Joseph, fulfilling prophecy. woohoo!
Wait a second, isn't he the son of god?
It's almost like they made that last bit up after the event eh?

I was maybe six when I first seriously questioned my Sunday School teacher. My Dad had never thought to argue his wife's beliefs. He just nodded..."yes dear"...When the preacher called Dad to express concern, Dad laughed his ass off.

10:17 AM
I'm still trying to decide what to make for dessert
pecan pie is on the cards

Ooh ooh, for Xmas?

mais oui

Chit, anyone can do pecan pie

indeed
that's a bonus

Being an expert at cooking is never so fun as when showing up family

10:20 AM
indeed
but I'm planning on 3 desserts, so I need at least one of them to be a no-brainer
chocolate and cherry trifle might be a goer

Particularly when your gorgeous sister can't handle toast
No no no...you don't need a no brainer, you need a do-aheader

same thing

Hmm...must ponder...
OOH I got one! brb
I'm still trying to find what I'm looking for...but...tiramisu? Easy, but soooo impressive

blech
I'm teetotal, and 4 of the 6 i'm cooking for hate coffee

This isn't what I'm thinking of either, but saveur.com/article/Recipes/Vistorta-Chocolate-Cake

10:30 AM
looks good

What's the Italian cake with hidden toys?

looks like a flourless chocolate cake I make which is fecking awesome
no idea

It's yellow and tall. I think it's Christmas traditional, but it may be Easter...I get those confused.

pandoro?

Yes, I think so...maybe...the quicky look I had seems right but there is a tradition of hiding something (or somethings) in it
like if you get it in your slice you will be blessed with many babies or o great new car or something
A king cake (sometimes rendered as kingcake, kings' cake, king's cake, or three kings cake) is a type of cake associated with the festival of Epiphany in the Christmas season in a number of countries, and in other places with the pre-Lenten celebrations of Mardi Gras / Carnival. It is a popular food item during the Christmas season (Christmas Eve to Epiphany) in Lebanon, France, Belgium, Quebec and Switzerland (galette or gâteau des Rois), Portugal (bolo rei), Spain, and Spanish America (roscón or rosca de reyes and tortell in Catalonia), Greece and Cyprus (vasilopita) and Bulgaria (ba...

10:43 AM
I'm not bothered about it being traditionally christmassy

Are your guests bothered by such things?

Oh crap...It's almost 2am...Ive slept 2 hours in the last 48 and I have to be someplace n the morning...I gotta try to sleep
G'night! I'll ponder it as I try to sleep.

lol, sleep first, ponder later
try the old muscle tension thing, never fails for me

2 hours later…
12:47 PM
quiet in here

1 hour later…
2:10 PM
sneaks up behind @ElendilTheTall
Boo!

2 hours later…
4:08 PM
@SAJ14SAJ two hours later
oh, hello

Scared?

4:25 PM
@ElendilTheTall Why so nice to see you this fine dreary December day :-)

4:37 PM
Someone got a nice big kitchen table I can hide under so they'll stop piling last-minute emergencies on me?

@Yamikuronue My dining table seats 12 wth the leaves in....

Sounds perfect. I'll bring some pillows and make an impregnable fortress :)

Aww.
@SAJ14SAJ Funny you should call those "leaves".
In Dutch, it's "bladen". Which would be related to "blades".
But a blad is also a leaf! Of a tree or of paper.

Interresent.
@Yamikuronue I am not sure hiding in your fortress is in line with your goal of getting them to hire you?

4:55 PM
No, but it's in line with my goal of not having a stroke :)

@Yamikuronue Then you should give up corsets in your cosplay :-)

5:39 PM
Aha! I have conquered Google Analytics!

3 hours later…
8:17 PM
Hey, anyone know it's on-topic for me ask for a recipe for an ingredient? It's a pretty specific question and wouldn't have that many answers.

It would have to be a very obscure ingredient, for which there is some reason yuou could not simply google the recipes.
In general, recipe requests are considered off topic.
On the other hand, if you can turn it into a technique or method question, or a troubleshooting question for somethign you ahve already tried, that works much better.

8:35 PM
"How do I properly peel a durian without passing out from the stench?"

@Cerberus 1. Purchase a quality, fresh durian. 2. Perpare durian by refrigerating to reduce volatile compounds. 3. Place durian gently in trash container. 4. Cover tightly.

Sounds like a good procedure. except step 1.

Well, you can edit my answer :-)

edits your answer

Are you making durian tarts, Cerby?

8:52 PM
Okay, I think what I need to know would be a recipe request, even if a very specific one. - What can I do with overcooked beans that's not making burritos or refried beans, and is diabetic-friendly.

Soup. Stew. Casseroles. Tacos.
Bean dip.
Dog treats.
Beans are inexpensive, just discard them.
