12:03 AM
Mmm, So glad it was time to release the Kraken.

12:16 AM
That's what I call my knob.

@DavidFreitag I prefer my own version.

1 hour later…
1:43 AM
@Simon what the hell is that even supposed to mean?

Nothing, nothing.

@Simon perhaps that your nob is all hideous and slimy?

And it's huge!

o

2:15 AM
@Simon Like the Fun Spot?

I DON'T UNDERSTAND GROWN UP STUFF

2:26 AM

@Iszi Damn, no wonders why I didn't get the reference. Can you explain me why they chose the most boring adults ever to do the commercial?

@Simon Pretty sure they're the owners.

@Iszi Oh god.

@Simon The one guy's been in those commercials for as long as I can remember.

Is the Fun Spot a cool place to go or everybody's laughing about it?

2:41 AM
I love the Fun Spot. The trick is getting there, the directions are a little squirrelly at times.

Been awhile since I've been, but it's fun.

Amen brother.

o
This is soooo not gonna fit on my tiny ass desk.

@Simon Shitty speakers are shitty.

@TerryChia I respect the other people in my house unlike you.

2:52 AM
@Simon Get a nice set of 2.1 speakers if it's for music.

The frequency response isn't as good as my headphones though, QQ.

@Simon This is the one I have on my desk.
No sub though.

RCA input, that's cool.

2 hours later…
5:06 AM

4 hours later…
8:37 AM
@Simon At that price range, you might as well get a nice set of studio monitor class speakers, and you won't really need any subwoofer then either (tho you can add it later, if you'd really have to). I've heard these ones, for example, and they're mighty good for the asking price. And the company is Canadian, I believe:
They're properly made, no plasticky gimmicks... I had their bigger brethren once, they weren't bad, not at all. And I've heard these ones often enough to know they do have plenty of oomph say up to some reasonable volume, loud enough to drive your neighbors nuts

@TildalWave Those look pretty good. I don't really have space for bookshelf speakers though.
That's why I went for the Audioengine A2. Those fit nicely on my desk.

OK, you would need an amp, true that...

@TildalWave Wait, those are passive speakers?

@TerryChia Wait, I know of some tiny cubes, Hi-Fi class ... I'll try and find them
@TerryChia Aye, they require an amp

@TildalWave Ahh. A decent amp cost some $$ and space though.

8:42 AM
@TerryChia IIRC Energy has an active subwoofer for those, so you can connect them to the sub then

The Audioengine A5's are good powered bookshelf size speakers. I have heard them and it's pretty good for the price range.
@TildalWave There are plenty of choices if you want to go the passive speaker + amp route.
A nice powered speaker is harder to find though.

Dunno, I never heard them, but I'll trust you ;) Depends also what kind of music you listen to the most... can't have an excellent allrounder at that price range, tho you can get pretty close if you buy smart
@TerryChia Are those tiny Bose cubes active through the subwoofer? They're pretty good... dunno about price tho

@TildalWave Indeed.
@TildalWave Dunno much about Bose. Never really liked them though.

heh me neither, but those cubes did sound pretty good. Might be terribly expensive tho
hmmm about $200 for passive 2.1 ... that doesn't help

Most important thing is auditioning before you buy to make sure they fit your music type.

8:49 AM
@TerryChia yup, that's why I thought of Energy, he might have some demo rooms around

@TildalWave Might be able to pick up one of those old receiver/amp things for cheap.
At that price range headphones definitely sound better than speakers though.

@TerryChia Well I have a father that's a Hi-Fi freak, so I just "inherit" whatever he's done with... I'm not complaining :D And, getting things for free is by far the cheapest until you actually get paid for it LOL

@TildalWave Ahhh that's awesome. I have to buy all my audio stuff myself and I am already spending an insane amount of $$ on the stuff.

when I say "Hi-Fi freak" ... I mean, it. And yes, I'm aware of the word "audiophile" :)
I'm perhaps the latter, my father (and my bro too actually) are more the former
@TerryChia I only spend money on that for headphones ... which they aren't cheap, but the rest I'm kinda taken care of. And I don't complicate, I use stereo speakers with simple tube amps. I have some 3D headphones for games where audio positioning matters

@TildalWave Well, my A2's are lasting me close to 3 years now.
My custom earphones did cost me quite a bit though.

9:01 AM
aye all this audio boutique stuff can get ridiculously expensive ... one more reson to look forward to xmas pressies LOL
BTW I played again through the Deus ex, human revolutions on my headphones and I tell you those last few scenes are startling, I really looked behind me a few times LOL
when those crazies start running towards you, you just thought you can catch a breath and then there's some snorting sound coming from behind you ... nearly had me jumping off my chair :)

9:21 AM
I think my 7.1 system is pretty good - decent sub, with built in amp and basic mixer, then centre bar, L&R, mid L&R and far L&R. Excellent for games that support decent sound.
Of course then I have another set of inputs and outputs for the music production stuff. Think that's another 8 inputs and 4 outs
Total cost, including all the adapters and cables, external and internal hardware etc was £250 for the surround sound and £550 for the production kit
not bad pricing

@RoryAlsop 7.1 is generally not as good as 2.1 for music though. Or at least a lot more expensive for the same quality.
Excellent for movies/games though.

@TerryChia yeah, that's why I only use it for gaming
The M-Audio stuff is for music, production, recording etc
Just looking at the specs - looks like 11 inputs and 8 outputs + SPDIF and MIDI

@RoryAlsop Yeah, they make good speakers.

@TerryChia Ah - I don't have any M-Audio speakers :-)
when recording, I fire monitor output through a set of reasonable Wharfedales, and my guitar goes through a few Marshalls :-)

Alcoholic Beverages

Proposed Q&A site for bar staff, connoisseurs, cocktail mixologists, wine tasters, lager lovers, stout sippers, and beverage beginners to learn about the preparation and appreciation of alcoholic beverages

Currently in definition.

We only need 13 more questions with a score of 10

@LucasKauffman Done.

@TerryChia my hero <3

@RoryAlsop You have the old Diamonds? Those were neat Wharfedales, difficult to find someone that'd sell them. They're too cheap for the sound they produce LOL
Diamond II I think they were? Or you have the "new" Diamond 10 ones?

@TildalWave Old audio equipments rock. :P
I want to start a collection of old headphones but I just can't find the space.

9:54 AM
@RoryAlsop There's a nice anecdote re Marshals. From the communist era, when marshal Tito was still alive, there was some rock concert (IIRC it was some band playing similar style like Ramones) and their guitar amp died. And the dude said through the mic "our Marshal died" and the police closed down the venue and arrested the lead singer for spreading bogus news about our then "dear Tito" LOL
f*ing commies ... hiss ... spit :)
oh shit, I changed my gravatar :))
I forgot

10:28 AM
@TildalWave Hmmm - that's a good question. I lost the labels off the front of these about 21 years ago :-)

@RoryAlsop haha yes that would be Diamond II then, I lost labels on the front cover of mine too... actually, I might have lost the whole covers, don't remember any more :)
I don't even remember where they ended up. Shame, I hope I wasn't stupid enough to sell them LOL
I might have been...

@CodesInChaos Yup, this definitely sounds on-topic here.

@TildalWave They sure sound like awesome speakers but I didn't wanna spend that much :P

@LucasKauffman why is that not combined with the food/cooking SE?

Proposed Q&A site for beer aficionados and collectors

Currently in commitment.

@GnomeSlice why? Beer-making is a real art.
as is the history of beer.

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN
QQ I need to fast forward 3 years to get my BA.

@poly - Glasgow at the brand new Hydro attends
Arena, even

5:56 PM
On a completely unrelated note to anything you guys are talking about, should bars / places that sell alcohol have the right to detain people if they suspect the person is too drunk.

@RoryAlsop sweet
@Griffin In British law, if a member of the public (incl. staff) suspects that a person has committed an arrestable offence, they can perform a citizens arrest.

@griffin - They can stop you causing damage or attacking folks but not just for being drunk

@Polynomial I think the US has something similar but thing is they haven't committed the crime.
@RoryAlsop Should they be allowed to prevent you from getting in a vehicle tho?

@Griffin that falls under a Section 5 Public Order Offence in the UK, so yes.

For clarification I was not detained this is just a should they be allowed to do this?

6:01 PM
I'd say yes

Yes

@Polynomial Follow up question: Since they can do they?

In the UK what I have seen is them restrain folks until the police arrive to breath test them

@Griffin Depends on the person. It's not an obligation.
yup pretty much
also if you get into the driving seat of a car when drunk, even if you don't start it up or drive it, you're classed as "drunk in charge of a motor vehicle".

Same here.

6:02 PM
same goes if you're just wheeling a moped along when the engine is on (e.g. to listen to the radio)

I think it'd be a good idea if we did that in the US. Like if the bar tender / employee sees you've had a few too many drinks then they can detain you.

@Griffin If they're causing a nusciance or breaching the peace, then it's a public order offense and they can be detained by a member of public until police arrive.
also keep in mind that detainment is only allowed in order to facilitate police action. you can't abuse to just detain someone who broke the law but then not call the cops and keep them there for ages

@Polynomial Oh I know but again, I'm talking about people not causing a problem they're just too drunk to drive.

basically you can't legally perform a citizen's arrest unless the person is or has committed an arrestable offense.
being drunk isn't an offense. driving drunk is.
if they get their keys out and try to get into their car, you can generally say that they're attempting to perform an illegal act that constitutes an arrestable offence.
at that point you can legally detain them until the police arrive

But .... like.... then they can get in trouble. :( Getting in trouble no fun.

6:08 PM
and the chances of that person suing you successfully over it, even if you technically weren't in a legal position to perform a citizen's arrest, is next to none - no decent lawyer would take the case (they know it's a losing case), and the judge would rule in your favour because you were attempting to protect people from their actions.
sure.
but if they're trying to drive a car while drunk, I'd say they need to be in trouble.
you're also mixing up the law and application of the law.

I'm talking about like detain till they get a cab / other form of transportation. And if worse comes to worse police come and take him home / into cell until he sobers up.
There needs to be a better way.

for example, pinning your friend to the ground because he's too wasted and is falling into traffic could be construed as assault or false imprisonment, but the likelihood of your friend applying the law in this case is almost nil.
same goes for people who fight with their friends when they're both wasted. yeah they're both committing assault, but it's not considered a "serious crime" (there's a specific section of law dedicated to this) and as such either party can choose not to press charges.

In America it seems that if someone can sue for somethign they will...

In the USA*

^Yes
I do that a lot and my international friends always yell at me for it.

6:13 PM
basically the difference is that serious crimes are crimes where the state will investigate and press charges regardless of the victim's requests. murder and capital fraud are good examples.
yeah, that influence is kinda moving over here too
injury claims are the worst

1 hour later…
7:36 PM
@Polynomial I more meant weird that it's not lumped in with the 'alcoholic beverages' proposal.

8:25 PM
@Griffin You can always sue, the question is if you win...

8:56 PM
does this look legit to you guys?

9:23 PM
What doesn't seem legit?

9:37 PM
@GnomeSlice It looks terribly written and generic (f.e. "your company" instead of your company name) and rather like a hook for a scam, but it could equally just be the standard sloppy business practices you tend to see from small-to-mid size Saudi companies.

@Polynomial I don't even have a company.
It could just be a language barrier though.
Also that account recently followed a ton of animation accounts, it's probably just a copy pasted letter they're sending out to all of them

I don't even understand what they're proposing.

video

'video' is not really a proposal.

9:54 PM
I have stated my opinion. What do you guys think?

Q: Should we hold back on the "don't roll your own crypto" advice?

rathThe famous phrase don't roll your own crypto, also featured in our memes list, is frankly getting a bit annoying. There are times when including that advice in an answer is called for, but after a casual skim of the "hot" questions, I see the phrase is something of a universal signature. The ma...

@GnomeSlice If I received one like that I would delete without even answering it.
Doesn't matter to me if it's legit, if it's that crap.

@RoryAlsop It's potential work though. Of which I have basically none.

@GnomeSlice hmmm - how much backround checking can you do of that company?

But yeah I see what you mean
@RoryAlsop Interestingly she doesn't appear to have listed her company

@GnomeSlice send an email back asking for more information

I sent my email address, which may or may not have been a mistake.

9:58 PM
Yes, but if it is a scam, that's what they make filters for. Also, you should've used GuerillaMail.

Yeah I know
Oh well
I <3 guerilla mail
I use that when I make stackexchange sockpuppets
Doge, such internet

Like that one :P
unfortunately it mean the mods all know when I make a new sockpuppet

mmmmm chicken coma.

chicken coma?

Chicken coma.

is that when you eat so much chicken that you fall into an involuntary deep sleep?

Ayep
Less involuntary sleep, and more involuntary paralysis though.

A chicken comma is when you eat chicken, then briefly pause.

10:23 PM
A chicken semicolon is when you've finished dinner, but notice there is a piece of chicken left in the pan.

A chicken colon is… let's not go there. A chicken ellipsis is when you go vegetarian.

So very glad that the kraken goes so well with chicken.
Oh finally Star Trek gets good. The Borg are such a formidable enemy.
