@JonEricson Likewise, when you're poor, Christianity can somehow make people happy. I talked with this amateur pastor (no seminary education, work as a nurse's aid, biology major college grad), and he told me that he entered the university, wishing for a relationship. He found a relationship with a girl who later broke up with him. His obsession with relationships and partying ruined his college career, so he ended up with the BS degree in Biology and didn't get into medical school.
He also said that he entered the pre-med major for all the wrong reasons (personal wealth and glory) instead of trying to help people. Then, he found God.
So, God "saved" him and presumably told him to become the amateur pastor of the church.

@Anonymous You seem to be operating under the assumption that wealth leads to happiness. That is an illusion.

He married a woman who was a legislator's aid, working in the house of representatives, and he added that he wanted to go to seminary school.
@JonEricson Well, one explanation is that people like to socialize, and lack of socialization makes people unhappy.

@Anonymous How would wealth exclude a person from socialization? (Socialism, I could understand. ;)

@JonEricson Huh?

@Anonymous What's the connection between wealth and socialization in your opinion?

12:14 AM
@JonEricson You're a community manager-in-training, eh? What do you do exactly? Do you think you would ever show your kids someday what your job is like?

31
A: Who are the Community Managers, and what do they do?

jcolebrandWho are the Community Managers? There are currently seven community managers. They are: Robert Cartaino Shog9 Grace Note Anna Lear Tim Post Jon Ericson Gabe What do they do? They help you out. No, really. But yeah, that's about the most generic non-answer ever. They revi...

My son thinks this job is even more awesome than my previous one.

@JonEricson I think, when you are wealthy or when you are an outstanding student in the class, people may be attracted to your wealth or good grades and would want to talk to you or befriend you.
@JonEricson What was your previous job?

@Anonymous But there's no statistical connection between wealth and happiness. So that hypothesis is not supported by the evidence.
@Anonymous Unlike you, I'm pretty free with my personal information. I bet you can figure it out in less than a minute. ;-)
Time's up, I believe. ;-)

@JonEricson I noticed that some people would tell the word everything or nearly everything about themselves and then wonder why they are being stalked. People can put anything and everything on their Facebook profiles, things that can potentially drive employers away.
Then, there are the smart people, who keep a squeaky clean online portfolio of themselves, so that potential employers can't find any blemishes.

@Anonymous Thank goodness Stack Exchange has never heard of Facebook. (That's not entirely true. ;-)

12:31 AM
@JonEricson Another way to express "thank goodness" would probably be "thank God" or "Thank the Lord" or "Praise the Lord".

@Anonymous How random.

@JonEricson My sentence is somewhat related to yours. You used the term "Thank goodness". I suggested similar variants.

@Anonymous Databases are awesome. So are thesauri.

@JonEricson On Between the Lions (TV show), there was a dinosaur puppet named Thesaurus.

@Anonymous I haven't seen that show since my son was in preschool. I'd forgotten about that character.

12:36 AM
@JonEricson How often do Evangelicals like you partake in communion?

Well, it's been something chatting with you, but dinner calls.

@JonEricson OK. Goodbye! Have fun at dinnertime!

@Anonymous My father-in-law used to train executives in personal information security, among other things. He'd run seminars where his opening act was to show the attendees all the stuff he'd found out about them.

waxeagle is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America. If the PCUSA is mainline, then the PCA is evangelical, whatever that is supposed to mean. I wonder how waxeagle's evangelicalism is different from Jon Ericson's.
@JamesT That would be so embarrassing!

@Anonymous I would worry about their reaction but he says they were really hooked from that point.
He would find out where their children went to school, etc.

12:44 AM
@JamesT What if a man is illegally married to two wives?

@Anonymous I guess that would be something he wouldn't bring up in the class. I don't know how common bigamy is though. Very probably people are more likely to have a wife + a mistress/girlfriend.
One could run a course on how to commit adultery and get away with it, but it would be rather immoral.

@JamesT or two husbands or a husband + boyfriend.

@Anonymous Yes, or bigamy with a husband and a wife - from next year in England and Wales, a bit longer in Scotland

@JamesT I wonder why bigamy is illegal in the United States.
I wonder if certain Mormon sects are breaking the law.

The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS Church, known to some as Mormon Fundamentalists) is one of the largest fundamentalist denominations and one of the largest organizations in the United States whose members practice polygamy. The FLDS Church emerged in the early twentieth century when its founding members left The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The split occurred largely because of the LDS Church's suspension of the practice of polygamy and its decision to excommunicate its members who would continue the practice. The FLDS Chu...
this was recent and they were stopped

12:53 AM
Still, why is bigamy or polygamy illegal?
Even polyamory may be considered as "cheating" of a relationship. Maybe it's safer for a person to assume that the relationship only exists between the two persons, not anyone else?

@Anonymous Historically the US got this from English common law, which derived it in part from canon law, which has its roots in Roman law and in the scripture and tradition of the church.
But all of these cultures, and others, have been against it.
Even as forms of multiple marriage have been approved in other places.

1:15 AM
@JamesT Weird. I wonder if times will be changing any time soon. If same-sex marriage is legalized, then legalizing polygamous marriages wouldn't be so behind. Besides, I once read a journal article about how Mormon women in the 19th century were plural wives, feminists, and schoolteachers. It's not like polygamy is evil or anything.

@Anonymous This is the slippery slope argument from opponents of same-sex marriage. I am not convinced the slope is quite that slippery. There isn't a significant lobby wanting plural marriage to happen. And probably little common ground between liberal polyamory supporters and ultraconservative religious polygynists.
Moreover it is a huge legal thicket.
and many people would consider it evil - eg because of its history as an institution enshrining abuse of women

1:56 AM
@JonEricson something something something giant dumptruck full of money.

lolblog.com/post/i-was-enjoying-my-blood-popsicle. (Is this a real thing in the real world?)
And this one isn't from Church Signs Epic Fails, but it should be: lolblog.com/post/just-a-funny-sign.

@JamesT But the same can be said for homosexual rape. My emphasis is on the word "rape", not the word "homosexual". Rape is bad, because it involves one individual who bullies and overpowers another individual. Homosexual behavior, like heterosexual behavior, can be appropriate and consensual or inappropriate and harmful.

2:20 AM
thats....almost as a strange as the lolblog posting

2:32 AM
@waxeagle And it almost was a blood pop-ice.

10 hours later…
12:53 PM
May I know to which church this priest belong to?
and what language he is speaking, is it an eastern orthodox?

@Islam Do you think 'Eastern Orthodox' is a language?

@JackDouglas No its a church

@Islam What is a church?
EO?

like catholic , syrian , coptic etc

So what does "and what language he is speaking, is it an eastern orthodox?" mean then?

1:02 PM
also like the church of the latter day saints which believe in the prophethood of Muhammad pbuh
Is it latter day saints?

What does 'pbuh' mean?
@Islam Is what latter date saints?
I can't seem to understand anything you are saying

peace be upon him, like how we put it after Jesus pbuh too

An acronym?
like 'grace'?

@JackDouglas Ya

'God's Riches At Christ's Expense'
Why do Jesus or Muhammad need you to bless them with 'peace'?
Shouldn't you be asking them for blessing?

1:05 PM
@JackDouglas It is a prayer to ALLAH to bless them and have peace on them
@JackDouglas No its polythiesm to ask them
all prayers are to God Alone

@Islam not in English
'Pray, pass the salt?'
it just means 'ask'

@JackDouglas Ya we cant ask them , all prophets prohibited to ask them, rather we need need to ask to ALLAH alone
All prayers are directed to ALLAH the lord of Jesus

@Islam because they are dead?

@JackDouglas No, because they can't help you

You mean you can ask, they just can't answer?
What is stopping you asking

1:09 PM
@JackDouglas God's commandment

@Islam help you do what?
@Islam I see

@JackDouglas qsep.com/…

@Islam " Seeking them from the dead" so I was right
2 mins ago, by Jack Douglas
@Islam because they are dead?
Why did you say 'No'

@JackDouglas Invoking others besides Allah is Shirk

It says "Seeking them from the dead is committing Shirk"
And you said 'No' as if I was wrong

1:12 PM
@JackDouglas They did die , so yes they are dead , but this is not the reason to not ask, the real reason to not ask is that they can't help, even if they wanted to

@Islam it doesn't say that: do you have another reference?
Or is that your own interpretation?
11 mins ago, by Jack Douglas
So what does "and what language he is speaking, is it an eastern orthodox?" mean then?
Did you mistype that question ^^^^^ ?

@JackDouglas In all places in the Quran and bible jesus worked miracle not by himself but by will of Allah
Its not my will but God's Will

@Islam Are you starting a new conversation here or is this somehow connected to what you said before?
You realise we are SPAMming this room?

So if you ask a prophet to cure your illness , he can just pray for you to ALLAH and its by the will of ALLAH that ALLAH cures you

@Islam what illness?
we are all terminally ill
and so far very few have been cured
(3 that I know of)

1:17 PM
@JackDouglas Its all the will of Allah

@Islam death?

And we need to Submit to his will alone

Are you submitting to his will?

@JackDouglas Try much as I can,

Are you submitting to his will well enough to please Him?
@Islam trying is not good enough
you must attain the standard

1:19 PM
@JackDouglas No Allah Rather likes me being imperfect commit sins and ask for repentence then not sin all together

@Islam you might want to re-read that and edit it again
ah, that's better
It originally said "No Allah Rather like me being imperfect commit sins and ask for repentence then not sin all together "

@JackDouglas Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “I swear by Him in whose hand is my soul, if you were a people who did not commit sin, Allah would take you away and replace you with a people who would sin and then seek Allah’s forgiveness so He could forgive them.” [Sahīh Muslim (2687)]

which could be taken to mean something quite different
So do you deliberately sin then say sorry?
Are you doing that right now?

@JackDouglas No

Just accidentally then?

1:21 PM
Sin happen inadvertently

Mine doesn't

It just happen we may not even realize it

Sin happens because Adam is our father

@JackDouglas No

and we love what he loves in our innermost heart
unless God rescues us from that state
(now we are friends I can say that)

1:23 PM
No person earns any (sin) except against himself (only), and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another.) thus emphasizing Allah's reckoning, decision and justice that will occur on the Day of Resurrection. The souls will only be recompensed for their deeds, good for good and evil for evil. No person shall carry the burden of another person, a fact that indicates Allah's perfect justice. Allah said in other Ayat,
(And if one heavily laden calls another to (bear) his load, nothing of it will be lifted even though he be near of kin.) ﴿35:18

Do you not cherish the idea of sin in your heart? Adultery? Fornication? Is it not a constant battle for you?
Lust, greed, selfishness, desire for approval, status?
These all have my name on them
Right next to "Adam"
and whatever your name is
did I mention deceit?

How much Allah is willing to forgive us can be seen in the following hadith related in Sahīh al-Bukhārī and Sahīh Muslim:
Someone committed a sin and then said: “O Allah! Forgive me my sin.”

Allah said: “My servant committed a sin, but knew that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes sins.”

Then he committed the sin again and said: “My Lord! Forgive me my sin.”

Allah said: “My servant committed a sin, but knew that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes sins.”

Then he committed the sin again and said: “My Lord! Forgive me my sin.”

But you don't know whether He will forgive you or not

@JackDouglas Everybody has it , ALLAH also knows it and forgives us too , as simple as that , this shows his mercy , grace and love for us

@Islam So everyone gets forgiveness?

1:27 PM
@JackDouglas Sure, I don't but I have faith in him and I know that he is merciful

@Islam so you just 'hope'
and one day you will find out

@JackDouglas Those who sincerely do repentence get it

@Islam how sincerely?
sincerely enough not to just go back to the same sin day after day?
and then just say 'sorry'?

@JackDouglas Sure its not just hope , its firm faith, But yes I do know whom he wont forgive anyways
the point is that I know whom he will never forgive

are you sincere enough?
never mind about other people
knowing someone else is unforgiven won't help you

1:29 PM
@JackDouglas And I know I am not in the list of people who will be never forgiven

@Islam so you are good enough?

E.G those who indulge in polythiesm will never be forgiven

I thought only God was good enough
your standards seem very low
basically everyone worse than you is doomed, but you'll probably be OK. How human.

@JackDouglas The standard is the greatest commandement of God , To worship God ALONE.

you know the difference between God's standard and human standards?
"Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect"
do that and you are safe, otherwise don't presume on God's mercy

1:32 PM
This is the standard and I know many people who fail in that and I know I don't fail in that

@Islam you have no idolatry in your heart?
do you not love money?
status?

@JackDouglas No

Yourself?

But if it comes by me , I dont hesitate to take it as a gift of God

@Islam how much do you give to me?
or anyone else?
50%?
95%
what is the standard?
If you are like me you spend most of it on your own desires
and give some away for conscience sake
to make you feel superior

1:34 PM
@JackDouglas Not giving money does not mean that you love money

@Islam what does your heart say?
Idol worship usually takes a different pattern in each individual

My heart says that Islam is the religion of all prophets including Jesus and some people have hijacked their message

@Islam er, about money

@JackDouglas This is the only thing my heart says all the time

"The heart is deceitful above all things"
so beware

1:36 PM
you should have known this by now
I have even changed my nick to it

I don't need your word to condemn me, I have my own
2
"Be perfect"

And its not just the heart , it is the soul, mind , logic and all other faculties confirm in unison this fact that Ashhadu allā ilāha illā llāhu wa-ashhadu anna Muḥammadan 'abduhū wa-rasūluh.
which means:
I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger."

You think that saying such things to the point of offence pleases your God, I know that.
I am only asking you to examine your heart and ask if you have attained the standard

And I also know for 100% surety that those who dont witness this will be doomed in eternal fire , like the same people who rejected Jesus when he came to them
@JackDouglas I have attained the standard of witness to the truth :Ashhadu allā ilāha illā llāhu wa-ashhadu anna Muḥammadan 'abduhū wa-rasūluh.

10 mins ago, by Jack Douglas
your standards seem very low

1:40 PM
So yes this assures me always of the justice and mercy of ALLAH

Even I could meet them

@JackDouglas According to humans , maybe yes, not according to GOD
A SINGLE declaration of the shahadah is more valuable then all the world and universe

It is your human judgement that assures you that you meet God's standards
But you sounded none too sure earlier
And I respected you more then

@JackDouglas that's the last thing I would care about

You have no respect for the soundness of my judgement?

1:44 PM
@JackDouglas I may not meet God's standard and I know nobody can, but God also knows this. And this is why he forgives his people without requiring anybody else
to bear my sins and show injustice

God's standard has been revealed: "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength"

@JackDouglas I have no respect for judgements which are not grounded in the sayings of the prophets and messengers of God
@JackDouglas yup
thats the first commandment

@Islam do you do that?

you dont need to believe in the trinity for that

note well the word 'all'
@Islam you do not know what I believe: you have not had the decency to ask
I believe I fall short of God's standard

1:47 PM
@JackDouglas everybody does

Indeed :)
But not all admit it

@JackDouglas If you really believe that you love God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength than thats it
its the intention which matters
even if you are unable to do it actually

No, not "intend to love God with all your heart" but the command: "love God with all your heart"
do you put words in God's mouth?

@JackDouglas So even Jesus was not able to love God with "all your soul and with all your strength "...
I am sure he was not

@Islam I am talking about you and me

1:50 PM
he even said so
@JackDouglas You and me don't work, the system with you and me works. We are a part of a system

@Islam reference?
@Islam It's true I'm not working right now

@JackDouglas thats an axiom , heard of systems thinking?

@Islam no, reference for "he even said so"
hover shows you what the reply was to

wait

you don't know that one off the top of your head?

1:54 PM
@JackDouglas Ya finding verse number for "Why have you forsaken me"
Also he did act , in a way people would think to be a sin: like barging into the temple, calling some rabbis "fools"

@Islam you don't believe those scriptures are inspired, why would you use them as proof?
@Islam people have been known to be wrong

@JackDouglas because its the only thing you would believe in

@Islam are you willing to hear why your interpretation is wrong? I have of course spent much time studying these scriptures

Although muslims also believe in the gospels, but Quran is the filter for the gospels

For example are you aware that what Jesus said was a quotation?
@Islam yes, they are 'corrupted'

1:58 PM
@JackDouglas There are people studying courses on satanism , witchcraft and what not, it does not matter, sincerity matters

@Islam I never said it did

@JackDouglas Have you read the Quran?

I did say "are you willing to hear why your interpretation is wrong"?
are you?

I have read the gospel though

@Islam have you read Psalm 22?
@Islam I can't read Arabic

2:00 PM
@JackDouglas quran.com
@JackDouglas Ya

Jesus draws our attention to the whole Psalm by quoting the first verse
"They will proclaim his righteousness,
declaring to a people yet unborn:
He has done it!"

@JackDouglas That sounds to be a jewish writing to me

@Islam The Quran cannot be translated
@Islam is that corrupted too?
I forgot!
Remind me, is it just the pentateuch that is still pure?

@JackDouglas It can be translated for those who need to seek the truth as you can see
try this : www.islamunveiled.org/eng/modules.php?name=free_books
I need to go for my prayers , in the mean time do read this:en.islamtoday.net/artshow-426-3787.htm

@Islam don't go!
I guess you have to
well, goodbye for now
@Islam I think it is Russian, and they would call their religion plain 'Orthodox'. I don't speak Russian though so I can't vouch for the dodgy looking subtitles

2:31 PM
@JackDouglas May I know have you visited a Mosque ?

5 hours later…
7:29 PM
where can I get detailed hierarchy of christian sects , I find so many of them..

@Islam there are something like 40k of them, I'm not sure you'll find one

@waxeagle Ya So what makes so many sects in christianity

@Islam there are a number of things, first of all it's global, so some sects are regional. Second of all, it's old which means that throughout history there been disagreements that have led to splits. Finally, it's a very personal religion so different folks interpret the scriptures differently, come to slightly different conclusions, and start sects based on those slight differences.
I would stress though that with a few minor exceptions 99% of these sects agree on 99% of the same teachings. How they get from A to B and how they deal with teh 1% is the basic difference

ok
May I know has anybody seen this:

@Islam how's that relevant?

1 hour later…
8:52 PM
@Islam I have seen this. It's about Islam.
@waxeagle I think it is relevant, because it is significant to Islam. :)

2 hours later…
10:51 PM
@Anonymous I was asking about the relevance to this room, and to the conversation we were having
