4:00 AM
@jlptn1 That was the prior phase

4:30 AM
oh. seems weird to progress to a more passive phase

3 hours later…
7:27 AM
hello

hihi

how are you?

I'm great, thanks for asking

Anonymous
@jlptn1 Yeah, I'm not terribly familiar with the process myself, but I think the idea is that the first phase is definitional. The sample questions and their votes define the proposal. Then, once the proposal is nailed down, people can commit to it and say "yeah I'd use a site which wants questions like these"

Hello!

7:31 AM
it's logical

I wish I was fluent...

i guess they don't want the newcomers to mess up the sample questions
but its still surprising nonetheless

:(

@Shazer2 I can't imagine becoming fluent

what level are you @jlptn1

7:35 AM
level:not fluent

can you converse?

yes

almost fluent
i can hardly string a sentence together.
:(

in general i think producing sentences is kind of a difficult and awkward thing to learn
but getting the supporting vocab can be pretty fun by reading or watching stuff you like
anyway fluency seems like the horizon to me
you keep walking towards it, but...

you never reach it
@jlptn1, I learned a bit a while ago and at school, I also visited Japan.
However my skills has diminished greatly

7:57 AM
@Shazer2 Yeah, I've forgotten a lot of stuff over the years :-/ Not that I was ever great at Japanese

Anonymous
But it happens if you don't keep up with it, you have to use it every day

Anonymous
Personally I figure I'll just be learning Japanese for the rest of my life :-)

@snailboat, how are you going now with it?

Anonymous
8:16 AM
@Shazer2 Hmm, I don't know how to answer that question

can you converse?
@snailboat

Anonymous
Sure. But I tend to say stuff wrong, or say the wrong things

Anonymous
If I start talking about a difficult subject, I always want to fall back to English.

Anonymous
But I do talk to people in Japanese, so hopefully I'll get better at it if I keep practicing :-)

練習あるのみですね^^

8:30 AM
Hehe!

No idea.. :(

11:57 AM
I see @snailboat

8 hours later…

7:40 PM
Hmm. Is ブチブチ different from ブツブツ? japanese.stackexchange.com/a/12526/1478

If my answer is wrong, I can fix it or delete it

8:07 PM
Another word I forgot how to read: 頭蓋骨

9:06 PM
oh nice
that reminds me I should start doing hypochondriac googles in jp so it will be at least somewhat beneficial
i estimate i waste 3+ hours a week on that

Anonymous
9:20 PM
@jlptn1 Oh yeah? Wow

Anonymous
I definitely waste time on that too, but not on a regular basis :-)

Anonymous
Then again, I've never measured

9:55 PM
the stupidest part is I do the same searches and just re-read the same pages and discussions

Anonymous
I've done that, too.

but if learning new vocab that could be beneficial i guess

Anonymous
I try to use Japanese wikipedia as much as I can instead of English wikipedia

Anonymous
Wikipedia is definitely a place I run into new vocab fairly often, but most of the time vocab I don't know is hyperlinked to the page about it

Anonymous
I bookmarked the "random page" link on jp wikipedia on my phone in case I get bored

9:58 PM
haha

Anonymous
(I had to enter it in. I don't think the mobile site has a link to it anywhere)

for whatever reason I don't spend too much time browsing wikipedia anymore
it's more just terminal or 1-deep page usage now

Anonymous
Well, on Japanese wikipedia, I'm much more likely to have to recurse to understand

10:22 PM
right i see
also good
wish i could tie programming into one of these study hacks
seems to be too heavy on production (vs reading) though
looking programming stuff up in jp is a bit slim depending on the specific topic too

11:05 PM
@snailboat I don't think it's wrong

Anonymous
@Chocolate Oh, I'm glad to hear that :-) I was guessing a little bit based on context

@Shazer2 ひさしぶり?
@snailboat You also use「ブツブツ」for talking to oneself
Like ブツブツ独り言を言う
ブツブツ文句を言う >>> 正しい日本語、って感じ。
ブチブチ文句を言う >>> 口語的?辞書に載ってなさそう。
統べる<<<読めない・・・

11:26 PM
@Chocolate I added a comment to my answer linking to chat so people could see the discussion here :-)

Anonymous
I'm putting that in my notes!

Anonymous
I could read 統べる because I learned it while I was studying kanji... but I don't know if I've seen it very often

Anonymous
I need to keep practicing reading Japanese. I think there are still a lot of kanji that native speakers can read fine that I don't know or don't remember ^^;

Anonymous
I'm not as worried about writing... I like to practice writing, but it's not as important for me.

Anonymous
I got a brush and some ink and Japanese paper to practice calligraphy!

11:37 PM
Ahh, I forgot the kanji 鮫・・・
