Q: Kill the [query] tag

Joel CoehoornKill the query tag. Please. 95% of these should just be tagged sql instead, and many of them already are. Some of them are related to other technologies, like linq, nosql or similar data retrieval, but even in these cases it would be better to just tag with that technology. query does not add any...

I guess my complaining on twitter worked

@AndriyM The ones prior to LIFO yes, after that the line breaks are back

@MarkStorey-Smith That's what I see too, thanks.

A question migrated to SO turned out to be an exact duplicate of another one, posted there a little later. However, the system doesn't allow me to close the migrated one as a duplicate because the other question doesn't have accepted or upvoted answers. Huh?

So a user can now repeatedly re-post their question when no-one answers, without us being able to close those as duplicates?

Narendra VermaI am implementing application specific data import feature from one database to another. I have a CSV file containing say 10000 rows. @YasirArsanukaev isn't it a good question? looks fine for me..
hey @RemusRusanu, please see @AndriyM's message about some article in your blog

Does someone else see some of the code snippets on this page as single long lines of code?

@Marian Dude, just migrating to DBA.SE is what I meant. Sorry for not being clear.

@YasirArsanukaev ah, that's ok ;).

@Marian q-: I wonder if there's some acronym for migration, e. g. VtM :-o

@Marian You scared him off. :)
@YasirArsanukaev When it's about migration, you can just say so. And since it may be debatable whether the question is better suited for DBA than for SO, it may be a good idea to ask first whether the Q is okay to move over here. YMMV.

@YasirArsanukaev dunno, maybe :-). Anyway, I helped with a flag, too.
@AndriyM not really, he's like Stig (see last evening's chat), he rarely speaks :-). But he strikes hard..
In addition - if it is a small project, then what do you scare about scalability? Not saying it is not important, but if I have 1000 messags and 5 users, I can just brute force it and be done. — TomTom 50 mins ago

i think I am done helping this person on this question
I have created s stored procedure in mysql to use the above sql query from php i am passing the Date values for this stored procedure by a statement CALL attendance_monthly(2013-07-01,2013-07-31); I am getting Error Code: 1292. Incorrect date value: '2005' for column 'fromdate' at row 1, where is error exactly i am not passing date with 2005 year value — Narendar_CH 4 hours ago

1 hour later…
12:49 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO I haven't forgotten but I'm preparing for a small trip. Will take care of it in the weekend.

@ypercube there's no rush at all :)
i appreciate you taking time to look at it
@ypercube ISNULL worked btw, want to answer it?

No. But that may help someone clear what the problem was. Maybe because ISNULL and COALESCE work a bit differently with respect to the returned datatype
(and CASE is similar to COALESCE I think.)
Is there a possibility that you were passing both parameters as NULL? like: COALESCE(NULL, NULL)

@ypercube none.
@ypercube i answered it
0
A: function hangs with null case operation

FreshPrinceOfSOIt seems as though there was an issue with the data types. ISNULL fixed the issue (thanks ypercube). After some research, COALESCE is the equivalent to the CASE statement that I was using: CASE WHEN (expression1 IS NOT NULL) THEN expression1 WHEN (expression2 IS NOT NULL) THEN expression2 ...

1:09 PM
But aren't both data types the same (date)?

@Gonsalu they are, but the NULL may be adversely affecting that
I'm guessing that the CASE is working like...
CASE WHEN NULL IS NULL
THEN (date)
ELSE (date)
END
and it can't determine the highest data type to return ?
Perhaps @PaulWhite could add to this?

Can you try wrapping the case statement in a CONVERT(DATE, CASE ... END)?

Sure, hang on.

@Gonsalu If it was CASE that couldn't determine the right type, then the conversion should be applied inside the CASE.
To help it determine the type

@Gonsalu that did not work, query hangs.

1:17 PM
However, if both parameters are the same type, I don't know how explicit conversion could help anyway. This indeed seems to be Paul's call.

Worth a try

this also fails
CASE WHEN CONVERT(DATE, @dateEnd) IS NULL
	THEN CONVERT(DATE, @dateStart)
	ELSE CONVERT(DATE, @dateEnd)
END

1:29 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO So, the query hangs but does the server manage to produce a plan? Investigating the difference in plans for COALESCE/CASE and for ISNULL might reveal the issue.
I mean, I don't know whether a hanging query is always an indication of planning failure or it could be just anything. If it's the former, my last suggestion makes no sense, of course.

You might get some info from an estimated plan, if that returns. You can't get an actual plan because that depends on the query actually finishing...

@AaronBertrand trying to get that now

@AaronBertrand Just for my own education, does that mean that the actual plan is built as the query goes? I thought it was created just before actual execution, i.e. same as the estimated one but probably with more things taken into account.

estimated plan

@FreshPrinceOfSO Is that for CASE?

1:36 PM
@AndriyM correct.

@FreshPrinceOfSO Is the ISNULL one any different?

@AndriyM then try to find it
You're going to need other execution context to find the plan I'd think

@AaronBertrand I guess I wouldn't know where to begin. :) Just wanted to clarify that thing for myself.

I'll try to repro the scenario later but a little busy now

@AaronBertrand i'm really curious if there is something else i'm doing wrong here

1:47 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO well I took a quick look at the function yesterday and do you really have four nested subqueries?

Ugh, well I'm sure there are some "opportunities" there.

@AaronBertrand i'm always open to opportunities
Please feel free to scrutinize all parts of it

2:06 PM
I must say that I am happy the query tagged has been killed.

@bluefeet cause for celebration

@FreshPrinceOfSO totally. I said something about it on twitter and anna lear reponded and killed it

@bluefeet that's super awesome

2:21 PM
i'm still not convinced that it was a good move, TBH.
there are other forms of "queries" that are not SQL-related. but i guess they'll just have to be tagged by product. is that what we're going with is a product-specific tagging system now?
i'm so not meta so i dont know what the general direction of the network is
@ErwinBrandstetter ... good show!!!!
Non-changing elements? Most expensive element? Licensing costs (for PostgreSQL)? ORMs defining what's sane? No I wasn't aware of all of that. — Erwin Brandstetter 11 hours ago
i still had that answer on an active tab and F5'd as soon as i came in. i wanted to see what happened.

@swasheck I looked through a lot of the questions and almost every single question that was tagged with query was sql related.

@bluefeet anecdotal evidence. nonetheless i understand where you're coming from i just wanted to note that there are other cases where "query" is appropriate and not sql-based (e.g. Lucene).

tomtom?

@swasheck don't think so :)

no ... it was a joke.

conga rats!

@JNK nice

JNK
now comes the hard part

@JNK congrats!!
what's the hard part in that?

@JNK swimming in pools of money?

JNK
quitting
I've only been in my group like 5 months and it was nasty getting in, bit of a fight
but b/c of the fight I got in at much lower salary than was appropriate, I just didn't know at the time
New job is 25% raise
I am sole provider for a wife and 2 kids so it's mainly a financial decision at this point

3:01 PM
@JNK and yet they've still taken advantage of you. i understand. i did it a few months ago and it was hard, in spite of the dysfunction of the team.

@JNK so.....swimming in pools of money it is

well done :)

JNK
@Lamak Well not exactly, but paying off debt maybe

well, at least you can show them the short stick you got before.

JNK
and being able to afford stuff around the house like new steps or whatever :)

3:02 PM
@JNK would you stay if they matched?

@JNK congrats!
@JNK so what are you going to be doing in your new role?

@bluefeet dance, of course! :)

@Marian silly me

JNK
@swasheck Probably not at this point
but I find it doubtful they will
@bluefeet Senior SQL Developer/DBA
basically auditing/reviewing/writing all the sql for the core database and backing up the dba
troubleshooting perf issues, automating stuff with Powershell etc

is it different than what you do now?

JNK
3:14 PM
it also works out nicely because they are getting into two new markets, food service and healthcare and I have experience in both of those as well

nice

JNK
yeah right now i just do database development
I wanted to do DBA stuff but instead of letting me they are moving someone from the sharepoint team over (!!?!)
theres political issues where I am right now too honestly

@JNK good, so more power to you. Show them both sticks. :)

JNK
@Marian lol I might
I want to do whatever gets done on good terms so we will see

3:15 PM
@JNK very cool, congrats

it bodes well for the new place that they only advertise on careers 2.0 via stack and they liked my SO account too
I also shamelessly name dropped at the interview

does anyone have a good intro/primer to SSIS?
I ref'd aaron and brent too
brent mainly from going to his class
oh you get to SSIS through BIDS?

3:20 PM
@JNK yes

JNK
well that explains something
ok NVM I think I can poke around here

you can poke @billinkc for some SSIS knowledge. Bring him with you to the interview :-).

JNK
no they know I don't know ssis, I am honest about my knowledge gaps
I told them I know what it's for and what it can do but never touched it
it was forbidden at current place

@JNK it's pretty straightforward (unless you're @FreshPrinceOfSO)

JNK
@swasheck BURN

@JNK SSIS is straightforward for standard things. it can get pretty complex depending on where you want to go with it, though.

"Stairway to Integration Services" good series by Andy Leonard covering some basic use of SSIS

JNK
oh wow its pretty easy
I used other crappier ETL tools before

Just don't do the dumb things in SSIS. Yes, you can sort, join etc and do all sorts of stuff in SSIS but my rule of thumb is to let the database do as much heavy lifting as possible.
And if anyone mentions Excel as a source or destination tell them they kiss your backside
2

^^^^^^^^^^^This

3:33 PM
@billinkc that's nice.

@billinkc These were all points I read in my intro to ETL using Kettle book

But specially don't use Excel as a source

i'd just punch them (figuratively)

I work with a dev who likes to make the server OOM by doing giant sorts & joins in SSIS

@JNK congrats!

3:34 PM
@James they love that crap

@James you should smack that dev until he learns

@AaronBertrand @AndriyM @Gonsalu I added XML plans if you're interested

@jcolebrand what's our hourly rate?

JNK
@billinkc Thanks for this, great link
@FreshPrinceOfSO depends on what level of service they want I would imagine
From the low end (we post your question on DBA.SE for you) to the high end (Paul, Aaron, and Remus go to your house and make you dinner) there would be a big range.

3:44 PM
@JNK I'd love for @AaronBertrand to make me dinner
Maybe paint my nails too (reference)

@FreshPrinceOfSO Pint and a bag of crisps

@MarkStorey-Smith (@FreshPrinceOfSO ... i think those are potato chips in your parlance)

@billinkc I've found that it depends. There are plenty of scenarios that I have tested where MERGE/JOIN in SSIS is much better performing that it was joining from our SQL server.
However that may have had alot to do with the fact that our SQL server was constantly getting hammered where as our SSIS server had plenty of RAM to be able to perform these operions effectively.

As always, it depends on your specific situation but as a general axiom, I'd put my money on the database providing better performance on that front by virtue of it having access to indexes and such

JNK
It's also possible the TSQL for your merge and joins wasn't great

3:54 PM
@JNK inconceivable

JNK
@swasheck You keep using that word...I don't think it means what you think it means.
2

There are also potentially collation issues. SSIS operations can use scripts which may be case-sensitive when dealing with variable comparison (or lookups). So you really can get bit in the butt if you don't really understand all the moving parts.
You guys made me hungry. What's for dinner?

I was wondering where you had gone

JNK
@billinkc @CadeRoux I wondered too, esp. when I saw you on twitter yesterday

@swasheck was wondering if you wouldn't mind giving me your opinion on this over on BH: not necessarily as an answer, just hoping for your first thoughts.

4:02 PM
I like SSIS, but there are a ton of "gotchas". I just found a couple days ago that using Is Sorted with ORDER BY is only valid for unicode, which I never use.

Lol we are officially a consultancy finally?

@JackDouglas i'll give it look. prepositions are tough propositions, though. :)

@swasheck thanks :)

anyone here good with CLR?

@PaulWhite Thanks, I'm impressed that SQL Server's BACKUP command is smart enough to work this out. In my case it really does matter because the question is about reducing the overall size of log backups for shipping off-site but it is great to learn new and exciting things!

4:12 PM
@swasheck Will you accept middling to poor?

@billinkc which is still better than i am
@billinkc after a db refresh i get ...
Msg 6522, Level 16, State 1, Procedure procname, Line 0

where a "db refresh" is ... a restore?

@billinkc erm ... yeah ... restore from upstream source

@FreshPrinceOfSO Ok, that's fine, but I don't think you can afford the $50k/hr

i found this but it's 2005-specific

4:14 PM
Heh
When did the chat room name get the Consultancy added to it?

@MikeFal we voted on it. actually ... @jcolebrand just made a unilateral decision based in intense sentiment analysis

@JNK Got Glass, last week I was @BeingNOLA on Twitter and been ridiculously busy.

@swasheck possibly sedimentary analysis
from the vantage point of a particularly high-backed chair with ample padding

4:43 PM
@MikeFal if you can't be arsed to be piped into the room constantly, what the hell are we going to do about your billable hours?

@jcolebrand Sorry, to busy on site with the client.

@jcolebrand I'm afraid that the owners of this room will get everything for themselves

@Lamak they're absentee landlords. They can't even make sure the garbage gets collected regularly. I say we sack the place and spike their heads on the Bridge

JNK
@CadeRoux how are you liking the Glass?

@JNK In some ways it is amazingly liberating. In other ways it is incomplete.

4:49 PM
@jcolebrand good idea

Like getting a text and replying is effortless. Or replying to a tweet.
But you only get email which is important and in your inbox. So because I filter all my mail with rules, I usually work from is:unread OR in:inbox
The taking photos and videos is great.

JNK
Do you get any crazy looks?

The voice recognition is good but gets thrown in noisy situations as you can imagine.
@JNK Yes, a lot of people know what it is and I let as many people try it as I can. I probably let a couple dozen people try it at BarCamp on Saturday.
It's not a substitute for a phone which to me is complete - there is no emails which are not on the phone, no capability you can't do, like sharing to an email address of phone number which someone just gives you. There's no way to do that with Glass because there is no input.
If you take a picture and someone says can you email that to me, if they aren't in your circles there is nothing you can do.

JNK
@CadeRoux oh wow you can't like spell out an email address?
I wonder if there are plans to integrate with some sort of input, like one of those desktop keyboards that uses led's

@CadeRoux saw on HN today that Google Glass got "pwned" by a QR code. Didnt read it.

5:03 PM
@swasheck That error comes when you try to access the clr thing right? Did you check out the userid/permission thing the fine articles discussed?

@billinkc yeah ... when we try to run the proc
i'm exploring recreating the user/sid (if necessary)

@JNK Not that I know of. It's a very primitive interface paradigm of cards and swipes and taps. It's incredibly efficient and minimal.
@JNK It's really just Android Ice Cream Sandwich with a special launcher.

JNK
@CadeRoux i'm unfamiliar with AICS :)

@JNK Some of the things like the way Google Now just knows stuff from your email and history like upcoming flights and temperature in both your home and destination, favorite sports teams results etc is all there on the pinned cards "behind your ear".

@CadeRoux I would love to try Google Glass

JNK
5:09 PM
@CadeRoux oh yeah I have that too, Google Now
on iOS in the google app

@jcolebrand i'll trade some foodstamps

@swasheck Sounds like that was fixed in the version before the one I've got - I'm on XE7.

@swasheck must have hurt glass's feeling

@JNK It knows I'm at Canal Place and it shows me the movies playing downstairs and their showtimes.

@JNK but it's somewhat limited
I think that it doesn't show you information from mails

JNK
5:12 PM
@Lamak it does
When I went to that seminar in atlanta, I had email confirmations for my flight and hotel and it brought them up for me with directions and flight schedules and stuff
also weather in atlanta before I left :)

@JNK hm....Then I'm misremembering

JNK
@Lamak it may have been an old version, I don't know
I have made other appointments via email, just with an address and a time, and it gives me a direction card for them too
I don't use it much now but it was handy when travelling

@JNK Oh, it doesn't have notifications

JNK
@Lamak oh no, no notifications
I have to pull it up myself manually

right

JNK
5:16 PM
also it sucks the hell out of my battery
so I leave it off most of the time

@JNK @jcolebrand how did this happen?
function hangs with null case operation http://dba.stackexchange.com/q/46486?atw=1 #sqlserver

I also have a crappy IPhone 3gs

and I got confused about some limitation for Google Now on iOS on Chile

it's based on the "hot" score I think which is a combo of votes/views and time

@JNK so i'm pretty hot?

JNK
@FreshPrinceOfSO Your QUESTION is pretty hot. I've gotten hot food from cooks who themselves were not super hot. ;)

Ah damn it

5:19 PM

JNK
@FreshPrinceOfSO In my defense, the only image I have of you is a static one of an early-90's Will Smith

@FreshPrinceOfSO Meth diet is not attractive

@billinkc don't judge
@JNK i can send you a framed 8x10 for your desk

haters hate, it's in our nature
I'd add a framed photo of you only if it was autographed

Done.
I'll just need your address, social security and mother's maiden name

5:24 PM
3030 Main, wallawalla washington. 288-92-3619 Bouvier
I had a call from Microsoft security team the other day asking for the same information. Seems my computer was broadcasting an IP address

@billinkc i've always wanted one of those calls

I'm lying. No one calls me. Ever. Not even my family

There's services that can help with that
I think it's one of the services provided by The Heap™ Consultancy
For $3.95/minute, we can call you and tell you we care about you

@billinkc I get a catholic school on google maps

JNK
@Lamak That's FATHER billinkc to you

5:28 PM
oh, sorry

@FreshPrinceOfSO This is not one of the services I provide for our group.

ahhhh, seriously 5 hours of sprint planning in 2 days. I'm over it

JNK
@bluefeet yeah how do you like agile?

Why are vendors so terrible with data retention.

5:40 PM
@JNK I came from an agile team that didn't follow the process, now we follow the whole process and it is kinda a pain in the a$$.
Sorry I don't want to get flagged for swearing

JNK
@bluefeet no worries

The DB stuff they assign to me are large projects so I always wind up being over capacity for the sprint, so they want to give DB stuff to developers which is a nightmare

JNK
Was curious, new place uses agile

@bluefeet That does seem to happen to you a lot.

@Zane yeah cause @FreshPrinceOfSO is kind of a jerk

JNK
5:43 PM
@bluefeet he just had boundary issues and didn't realize he had taken it too far

@bluefeet Lol you noticed that too. :)

@Lamak Wallalwalla Washington was always referenced on Buggs Bunny. (and Bouvier is Marge Simpson's maiden name). That was my SSN though

@billinkc I thought it was Humphry Bogarts SSn

@JNK agile is pretty good just frustrating at times

JNK
Seems like a decent process though

5:44 PM
@JNK I LEARNED my boundary!

Ask the NSA, they probably know

JNK
these guys do weekly releases
@FreshPrinceOfSO notice the tense of my statement - had boundary issues

@billinkc Oh, I know, I just never had looked it up

Walla Walla and Albuquerque were two bugs references
Walla Walla was in like all warner brothers cartoons. Every company was based there

I had zero chance of spelling Albuquerque correctly

This is pseudo political but I still find it funny - Wyoming only has 2 escalators in the whole state.

That doesn't sound accurate

JNK
yeah it is

Cheyenne and Laramie ought to be big enough to have multistory malls

JNK
A cheyenne bank has the escalators
er no, its in Casper
There used to be more but some were removed
And there are some malls with rules about escalators but no actual escalators
Hmm but this article is 5 yrs old now

5:56 PM
@JNK I hate escalators. I feel as though people should be using the damn stairs.

Finding several articles to back up your claim. Still seems fishy

I park at the Mall of America to get to work everyday and getting stuck behind morbidly obese people hoping on stairs that walk for them bothers me.

I don't usually get much further into WY than Torrington goo.gl/maps/Ci9nT

@billinkc Furthest I've been is Rapid City. Did a lot of their LTE installations for Verison in the black hills back in 2011

@Zane Often those morbidly obese people have blown their knees carrying all the extra mass so hiking stairs, while it should help them, will probably make things work
Brother-in-law used to live in Rapid. He's since moved back to Torrington which is where my Father-in-law lives
