12:48 AM
don't forget, he let his "friends" expend energy attacking him because of those very same robes

1:32 AM
@JohnP That was brilliant
@trogdor Trolldalf. It was a dramatic reintroduction though! Gandalf disappears and the party believes him dead, he fights the Balrog in his own session with the DM, the party plays a session without him... or so they think. Then they run into a strange white-robed man in the forest, converse with him... and then the DM knocks on the table twice. Gandalf's player walks in through the door: "Gandalf... yes, that was my name..."

lol

2:00 AM
Good morning @BESW :)
[checks time] Good noon!

Ohai. Actually, afk ten minutes.
Back.
What's new?

Welcome back :D
I am finishing setting up Windows 8 on a new PC!
And pondering how to ask the remaining two 4e questions :)
or... F4te questions

lol
been looking for 4E questions to answer

These are a couple of questions about Fate Core unfortunately xD

currently nothing that I can answer that isn't already answered as well or better than I could
:(

2:12 AM
docs.google.com/document/d/… The first two (the third of which has already been asked)

ah
that's much more condensed now

(Fate Core books in Italy now.)

lol

@BESW That is a puzzling place to put them.

Guam, what's a Guam?

2:16 AM
ETA Guam tomorrow, but I probably won't be able to get to the package window before it closes; meeting all day, and lunch break is probably too early to expect the delivery to have come in.
So.... Monday.
@trogdor "Gwaam, where's that?"

lol

@BESW "Sounds like it's in Africa somewhere. Italy's near there."

I am in the Caribbean, the Middle East, and off the coast of Peru.

Those roughly average out to Guam! (marked by the mouse cursor)

Nice try.

2:28 AM
:)
Lunch time for me! Bye for now

2:40 AM
So!
A letter just arrived.
It was large and had a book in it.

DAMN YOU. DAMN YOU TO PONIES.

3:08 AM
@BESW That doesn't seem like much of a damnation

I can't be too mad.

3:25 AM
@JonathanHobbs Would you rather go to the moon?

err... did all the questions disappear for everyone else?

So, I got a Deeds point in Burning Wheel.
That is the best currency.

@shatterspike1 Not for me, but that happens sometimes. If it persists, poke a mod.

@shatterspike1 Still there for me.

Going to my profile page and back fixed it
@AlexP try that
Err...
If the questions ever disappear for you, I mean

3:30 AM
I once had all my reputation vanish, which is how I learned about the reputation page.
(The button at the bottom forces a rep count, which fixed the problem.)

@BESW Huh. It's like a giant text file (besides the button).

Yup.
All your reputation, ever.

[gets out walking stick and hunches over] Back in my day, we had to use that page all the time!
Many actions would not result in an accurate reputation change, so the reputation the site thinks you have and the reputation you actually have (listed only by that page) would drift out of sync after a while.
Users in the know would periodically recalc their reputation just to keep things in sync.

@AlexP it's mostly deprecated....used to be that you could change your rep by a few hundred points (or more) under the right circumstances
they've done a lot of work to make rep changes close to live

3:59 AM
In case that guy who wants an illithid mask shows up while I'm not near the computer, I'm going to leave this here.
Stiltbeast's videos often assume more time than you have, but take a look and see if there's anything you can learn from. Also consider what you can do with paper-mache and some sticks. This is a print-and-cut octopus mask which looks like it could be modified into an illithid-like mask fairly easily.
This forum focuses on Star Wars type props and costumes, but the structural ideas are still sound. See if you can unearth a useful tutorial there. As always, the HP Lovecraft Society has a plethora of poorly-catalogued links which might be useful, and Propnomicon has some great links to examples and tutorials, with a strong emphasis on cheap effects that look good.
[deep breath] There's a TON of stuff out there!
(If I had a place for it, I'd totally be into propmaking.)

4:18 AM
...I think the mask works well enough for a proper answer.

4:50 AM
Hmmm.

5:06 AM
Did talks about an rpg.se blog ever get further than this?

5:21 AM
@mxyzplk I don't see "elitism" in sharing practical experience. D&D may be common to start with, but in my experience (and apparently SSD's) it's not for everybody and its ruleset can seem like esoteric arcana to the uninitiated. The fact that it's probably the most common starting RPG has nothing to do with its effectiveness or suitability as an introduction to the medium.
SSD explicitly endorses finding out if D&D is the right fit for the group as soon as is reasonable (and in fact says that he starts with it himself when he knows it's what the group will enjoy), so I'm in the dark about where this "indie game elitism" thing is coming from.
@Problematic Hi!
*refresh* Aw, still in Richmond.
@Magician [wave] How's it going?

5:47 AM
@BESW Hello!
I've dragged myself to work. Not entirely sure why.

For the abuse.

What's new on your end?

I'm thinking about blags.
Either picking mine up again, or maybe poking rpg.se about starting up the site blag.

As in, hosted by the site?

Aye.
Looks like the last meta discussion of it is two years old.
And never got past a couple of people saying "I'd write sometimes!"

5:54 AM
What would be the benefit? There are plenty of free blogging platforms. Would it be better integrated with rpg.se somehow?

Because it wouldn't just be me. We've got other people with interesting things to say.

A communal blog, interesting.

not sure I ever heard of that before

Every SE community has the potential for a communal blog.

Not bad. Though, again, you could just do it on any platform, the only benefit is shared domain. Which is a nice benefit, mind you.
But here's an immediate question: how would that handle alliance with independent bloggers like me? Pretty much anything I can think of writing for it, I can and will write for my own blog.

6:01 AM
Aye, these are Things.

On an entirely unrelated note, this is just beautiful:

My attempts to introduce diegetic lyrical content in my games have met with varied success.

Yeah, I can't write authentic lyrics, but I really like the idea...

I had one group in college that was interested enough in immersing themselves in my worlds that it worked occasionally.
But I usually cribbed for anything very long.

(They mourn a dragon, Glint, that was the only ally people of Tyria had against the primordial dragons, and that has recently been killed. The connection between these people and Glint is as of yet unknown).

6:17 AM
I once excerpted and repurposed Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking as a catfolk funeral chant.
I once got a friend to record The Hand of Flame from The Death Gate Cycle and used that for a game set in the world.
...to this day the Internet seems largely unaware of that song, and has no recordings except a midi.

I'm unaware of it as well :)

I'm not a big fan of most of Weiss and Hickman's series, but The Death Gate Cycle is among the best fantasy series I've read.
One element of the novels (there are seven, and it was always planned that way, which I like) is that each has diegetic appendices: we get to actually read excerpts from books or reports or treatises that were mentioned in the book.
And alongside that is a musical piece, often instrumental but sometimes lyrical, that was also encountered during the story.
The first novel, Dragon Wing, has a song that ended a war. It's called Hand of Flame.
And it's scored in the back of the book, but the Internet has never that I can find actually recorded it.

Interesting. It goes on the list of things to read at some point. It's a long list...

(If anyone wants to record it, I have the music sheet and can scan it!)
It's supposed to be a very simple folk song/nursery rhyme kind of thing.
I think this guy might need a bit more guidance than comments can provide....
At least, I think he needs VTCs as Too Broad until he can get it under control.

6:39 AM
Hi!

Hey.

how are you guys?

Busy!

at work?

I do have some work that's way behind.
But right now I'm getting the house ready for my dad to be alone most of tonight and all tomorrow, as I'll be at a meeting.

6:41 AM
Cleaning? Cooking?

Yes.

Well... why don't you put on some music?

Always.
Tracks just changed from Rainbow Factory to Tin Angel.

don't know what you are talking about... but I'm just glad you enjoy it :)

6:47 AM
for the first time... I saw Oprah today....
the 'you get a car.. you get a car.... everybody gets a car'
wait does this mean you are a brony?

It doesn't mean I'm a brony, but yes, I am.

nice!

I wouldn't put my appreciation of the show over any other pop culture media fare I like, but I do think the show's pretty cool and I really appreciate the creativity and compassion in the community that's sprung up around it.

I've never watched it....

You must not have been on any of the times that I've been talking with the chat about how to build a FiM RPG.

6:52 AM
but I do watch shows other people don't understand and that has a large also misunderstood fan base
like korean melodramas xD

My mother watches those with some of her friends who are really into them.
Being closer to Korea, the corner video stores usually have a small selection of 'em.

Here not so much.... Remember our main language is spanish
so hispanic novelas is what is normal to watch

We don't have anything Western that's not mainstream in America, basically. The Internet must provide that.

not a lot of people watch animes, korean dramas or .....
but a lot of times hispanic content gets re-written for USA
at least the veru very successful ones
like ugly betty

7:09 AM
@Jinx Hi!

@BESW well I'm off
I'm sick and I need my sleep....

Take care.
Oh, dear.
Rest and hot tea with lemon and honey!

I have to buy lemon.... that's on my to-do-list for tomorrow!
I was just thinking about that....
@BESW Thanks!

1 hour later…
8:21 AM
@trogdor Here's a question you can answer.

2 hours later…
10:11 AM
Can somebody tell me if I'm totally off the rocker here?
0
A: How can established settings contact each other, and are there rules about it?

BESWThere is no legal problem with using intellectual property in a private game. Unless you're making money off it or making it available to large numbers of people, what you do in your game probably isn't interfering with copyright. Of the established settings you're mentioning, only Forgotten Re...

10:32 AM
@trogdor Tooooo laaaaate.

mm
was watching shows with family
thanks for trying to help
he wants to bring Drizzt and Jarlaxe into his campaign,....
what silliness,... but wtv
if he likes it and his group likes it then they can do whatever
I think you are correct
there should be no legality against this as long as it really is just a one shot campaign this DM is doing behind closed doors
but I am not a lawyer,... so I cannot promise I am right

If he's doing some Wizards-sanctioned D&D night at a shop thing, then there'd be the potential for trouble.
Or if he's publishing it (free or not).

yeah
but it looks like he is just running something
so, based on that, I see no problem
at least legal in nature
I personally don't have the taste to bring someones intelectual property into a campaign,.. or at least I am just not that much of a Drizzt fan
I am not really sure which

10:48 AM
Given that you based at least one character on the fantasy feudal Japan series you were reading at the time....

yeah
I guess I just don't like Drizzt then
but that character never flew either, and I think that was good
it was only interesting while I was reading those books, not much of a place to go from there

11:24 AM
One of the main problems with FR is the presence of many, many big NPCs stealing the spotlight.

11:37 AM
yeah, thats actually a good point
NPCs who were PC's in their own stories are probably likely to steal the show

11:53 AM
I'd better say that it's far too easy for a GM to focus the story on the wrong characters
It'ss cool to have this well developed world with personalities and the occasional meeting with important people might be extremeely good. They can act as hook or they can be a diplomatic problem to solve

yeah, agreed, the GM is the deciding factor if certain NPCs are brought in in ways that would take over the spotlight
but the reason I would see it happening in cases like this are because of the likeing said GM has for said characters

It's an art; if the NPCs are too boring and lack agency, they turn into stock MMO background models.

yeah
boring NPCs are not great either

lol
I remember this
if it's that bad in a tabletop game, you know the GM isn't trying

12:08 PM
I've always been tempted to run the Town of Bob.

if it's something computerized, they are either just filler NPCs or you already ran out of all their other lines

I recall this as well

Yes, but the others probably don't know of the glory of OUAT.

I seem to recall at least one of his main villains also looking like him

12:18 PM
I think Shirley did resemble him a bit, yeah.
But I don't think Shirley had a beard.

yeah but..... the beard isn't a big deal when everything else is identical

[checks]
Nope, the Bobs' noses are much bigger.
And Shirley's hair looks slicked back, not cowlicked forward.
Given the art style, that's about as different as it'll get.
Same color hair?

well
the PC's are different enough
at least considering the art style

Aye, it's more than serviceable. Just not extravagantly detailed.

yeah
my point is that the villain is pretty similar looking to the GM
or at least that one guy
I admit I have not kept up all that much with the comic

12:36 PM
There's... nothing to keep up with.
It's still screaming "I'm not dead!" but there's no other sign of life.

mm
ok
the small amount of guilt there was has evaporated.

1:00 PM
@BESW I just learned that the thing we call Daddy Longlegs here are not spiders
and also that they have a kinda awesome tropical variety

@JonathanHobbs Ah, yeah.

Second picture on the left

To the best of my knowledge we don't have those.
Our daddy longlegs are cellar spiders.

yeah

We do have mosquito hawks.

1:02 PM
Drat
Wow
I was wondering if they were a variety of hawks and was hoping it was not the other way around

lol

The larvae stage of some kinds of them eat mosquitoes.

I killed a few of those before my dad told me to stop, cause I thought they were mosquitos
when I was a kid

Aye.
Some larvae are a garden pest: they eat the roots of plants.
The adults either eat nectar, or nothing.

[stumbles in] Bleeaaaghh....

1:06 PM
[readies hangover cure and chainsaw, depending on what transpires]

Do you have any "sleep in a bottle"?

You may have noticed I ran out of that a couple months ago.

I thought maybe you were just hoarding it.

@BESW Oh phew. I thought they were just... mosquitos. And giant.

Happily, no.
Our mosquitoes tend to be small and brutish.

1:19 PM
Brutish? :(

There are two kinds I've observed, actually.
Thin, stealthy, noticeable only by a faint droning sound if they get near your ear, and totally painless when they bite you... until later.
And thick-limbed, slower, quiet, kinda zebra-striped that actually hurt when they bite... and later.

Daaaang :(

yeah
I have been doing lots of yard work recently
and both kinds of those have gotten to me
it's worse if I am dumb enough to do it at night

@JonathanHobbs Oh, man. SciFi Debris just described the Metacrisis Doctor's creation as "wibbly-wobbly, Davies-was-high-y."
I want to hear your friend's reaction to that.

1:46 PM
Hi! I has a question! Can someone help me understand 3.5's two-weapon fighting rules? The feats presented in the PHB seem a little ... ambiguously worded. Are there any two-weapon fighting feats/rules (available free online) which are less ambiguous and/or end up eliminating the penalties?
ok, so that's 2 questions.

Oh, dear. I'm not qualified for that without research time I don't have.
@Zachiel [poke] If you're summonable, we have a 3.5 rules Q on the chat!

@BESW Watching!

2:03 PM
It's not one of his usual episodes, but it's very interesting to me; I love the way Doctor Who crawls back and forth and sideways all over its own continuity until it's like someone tried to tie a half-Windsor in an ouroboros.
Season 6b, the Shalka Doctor....
Even without the fan speculation and weird almost-made-it-into-canon bits, stuff like the Valeyard is explicit canon. I cannot get over how much cheek that took.

@BESW is it KRyan's Q: about becoming an aberration? If so, I have no idea.

24 mins ago, by Alyksandrei
Hi! I has a question! Can someone help me understand 3.5's two-weapon fighting rules? The feats presented in the PHB seem a little ... ambiguously worded. Are there any two-weapon fighting feats/rules (available free online) which are less ambiguous and/or end up eliminating the penalties?

oh, on the chat, sorry

I gotta go away a little while and will consult with my friend later :D
back in a few

@Alyksandrei hello

2:11 PM
@Zachiel hi!

so, first of all I'll try to brief you about how it's done by the rules

If you could tell me what's unclear (and you probably can't define it but I'm ok with that) it would be easier. Alternatively, tell me how it works according to your knowledge.
First of all, we need a full round action to land more than a single attack. Usually, when making a full attack we can start it with a single attack, see the results and then decide if going on with the other attacks or do something else with your move action
so if we need to move (more than 5 ft.) we can't do a full attack

Basically, what's unclear to me is what attack bonus the penalties from Improved and Greater 2-weapon fighting apply to. IE, if you have a BAB of +11 with a light weapon in your off hand, do you get attacks at (+9/+9)/(+4/+4)/(-1/-1) with a full attack action? Or is it (+9/+9)/(+6/+6)/(+1/+1) ...
And with a standard attack action, do you get one attack with each hand?

no, with a standard action you only get one attack
unless you have a feat that lets you strike with both weapons at the same time, it's on Complete Warrior and it's usually considered pretty weak

2:20 PM
even though you can, with some weapons, use them simultaneously?

yes, even if. Standard action / charge = 1 attack

@Zachiel ok then.

unless some feats, classes or other features introduce exceptions, of course
I can name you some later but let's focus on TWF now

@Zachiel Well, all I've got available to me is PHB/DMG/MM and SRD.

Ok, none of those AFAIK then
first of all, is your off-hand weapon light?

2:23 PM
yes. character concept uses 2 daggers.

If so your attacks with Improved 2WF are like this: +9/+4/-1 (main hand) and +9 (off-hand)
greater 2WF adds a second attack with your off-hand weapon

Wait, I thought Improved gave you a second off-hand attack?

mmmh wait maybe I'm making confusion with names, let me check (English is not my mother language)

Using 2 weapons gives you an off-hand attack, and improved gives you another one.
@Zachiel s'ok

oh ok and greater gives you the third

2:25 PM
@Zachiel that's how I read it.

(+9/+9)/(+4/+4)/(-1/-1) is the right one

ok, thanks.
now for the other part of my question
do you know of any additional or replacement feats which are available for free online?
specifically, feats that reduce, eliminate, or circumvent the penalties.

Do you mean, official feats or something that is downloadable for free, or do you include homebrew?

@BESW thanks, I'll take a look
@Zachiel anything that's been playtested and deemed "balanced" or "not game-breaking" by a significant population. Homebrew is fine.

2:31 PM
I was reading trough this
it's for reducing calculations on iterative attacks in general
so that you don't have to apply different modifiers to your attack rolls
and it also has options to translate two weapon fighting feats in a bonus to your two attacks
it has its problems if the enemy is really hard to hit (more attacks = more chance to roll a 20) or if it's really easy to hit (more attacks = more damage) and I don't think it really interacts well with those things that add lots of modifiers to the damage roll ... but it's an option
one of the biggest penalty reducers tor TWF is the Tempest Prestige Class (which is not for free but is worth mentioning). Anything that raises your to hit bonus works.
(tempest is specific)

@Zachiel where in the thread might i find those? it's a long thread, and I don't have time to read through it in its entirety ...

3:02 PM
mmmh basically in the second page I think. Let me fetch a different link
@Alyksandrei rpg.stackexchange.com/a/8963/4173 midway in this answer
it would turn your +11/+6/+1 into a +10/+10, add 2WF +8/+8/+8, add i2WF +8/+8/+8/+8, add g2WF +9/+9/+9/+9

@Zachiel interesting. Thanks!
g2g - time for work!

bye!

1 hour later…
4:15 PM
afternoon all

I haz moar AP. This time I fail to murder somebody and get a sweet Deeds point (the rarest and best kind of fate-point currency) for being all heroic and stuff.
@C.Ross Hi!

@AlexP hail and well met!

4:37 PM
hi all

Hi!

I'm looking for info abt taming animals in DnD4e. Anybody know where I can find it?

5 hours later…
9:37 PM
Hey, maybe y'all can help me think through this
Melee is when you attack someone next to you, Projectile is when you throw (or shoot) something at someone far away from you. Is there a word for causing an effect at range when you're not using a projectile?

Generally, or as a specific Fate mechanical term?

Generally.
Right now, I'm using "Ranged", but I can already see the issue with, "But Projectiles are Ranged!"

The generic term (probably originating in D&D) is "ranged [effect]."
Ranged spell, ranged attack, ranged healing, etc.
But I don't know off the top of my head of anything specifically-non-projectile-but-including-everything-else term.
"Ranged non-projectile effect"?

...I think I clicked on the most recently active room without checking if it was actually the site main room.
Oops! Sorry to intrude upon y'all, ahaha.

It'd be ranged. Ranged is a generic "at a distance".

9:41 PM
@JohnP Yeah, but he wants it to explicitly exclude projectiles.

Not going to happen.

Well, specifically, explaining that Projectiles are ranged, but not Ranged.

(Apologies for the generic masculine.)

You can't have a term that means at a distance that excludes weapons that shoot stuff.

Main chat's here, by the way:

 TRPG General Chat

Main chat room for tabletop role-playing games. Anyone can ask...

9:42 PM
Yup! Sorry again. -_-;;

We're happy to help, but main chat might be more productive.

21 messages moved from FATE game room

Speaking from an English perspective anyway.

@RavenDreamer fixed that for you

Much obliged, Sir!

9:45 PM
Okay, please unpack what you mean by:
> Projectiles are ranged, but not Ranged.

The game-effects of "Projectile" type attacks are different than the game-effects of "Ranged" attacks.

A projectile is not ranged. A projectile is what comes out of a ranged weapon.

So Projectile attacks are ranged (they target distant foes) but are not Ranged (which have slight differences for other rules)

hmmm

If anyone's played Fire Emblem, it's the difference between Bows (distance 2 squares) and Magic (1-2 squares)

9:47 PM
Okay, then you'll need to specify a game system.
Because there are any number of games (Fate comes to mind) where "ranged" is entirely generic.

So how is a bow with a range of 2 differently treated than a spell with a 1-2 range?

You can't make attacks against adjacent enemies
@BESW This is for my own system I'm in the midst of developing. Hence trying to nail down the terminology

@RavenDreamer Ahah. Because you're saying things that are true about some of the most popular tabletop RPGs, but not universally true.

Why not? Other than your opponent could knock the bow aside, I can think of many times I've shot something at point blank.

@JohnP game balance? I don't think it's a verisimilitude thing

9:50 PM
(Also, for the record because you mentioned Fire Emblem, you know that we specialize in tabletop RPGs, not computer games, right?)

@JohnP It's in terms of opportunity attacks. In 4th edition D&D, they got around this by making a lot of attacks "Close Burst, target 1 within burst" instead of Ranged whatever.
@BESW Indeed. But 'twas the first example to come to mind.

@BESW Raven is a mod at Gaming, so yes :-)

Then you just need to specify that a bow has a minimum range of X squares.
Bow: Minimum range 1 square, max range 5 squares. Awesome spell: minimum range 0, max range 3.

Holy crap, 106K?
What am I doing with my life?
@JohnP Hm. Extrapolating from that, a Keyword present on Bows but not Wands (or whatever) might work.
Yeah, that'd do it
A "Projectile" keyword
then I can just use Melee and Ranged

9:53 PM
In most D&D-inspired RPGs, magic doesn't need the extra utility in the name of balance.

I'm well aware. ;)

@BESW far from it ...

Hi, another North Carolina! [waves]
I've got relatives in the northern end of your sister state, went to college near Myrtle Beach.

@BESW /wave
May I preemptively apologize on behalf of my state?

@C.Ross - 100 xp for working verisimilitude into a conversation in context, and a bonus 10 xp for correct spelling. :p

9:59 PM
@JohnP I'll take the 100, but have to reject the 10 b/c I guessed and used spell check.
