@DavidWallace yes, you're right. "least common denominator' means what you say and is what is used for combining fractions, and informally is the metaphorical usage that Cerb wanted for what was common but not too general, the most specific without leaving anyone out.
I was thinking of common -divisors- where with two concepts are GCD and LCM (greatest common -divisor- and least common -multiple-. Sorry for my mixup.

3:08 AM
@waiwai I think that user is back again

3:20 AM
@Mitch But it was pretty small, no? How would you include them and yourself?
@Mitch Yeah exactly...I knew there was something about it, and common denominator didn't seem to make sense to me (while common factor/divisor would have), until Mahnax suggested that it was about the hypothetical denominator in an addition of differentially denominated fractions.

4:00 AM
Can't wait for 0x10c.

4:11 AM
Why are we dissing Dutch and Persian language?

5:02 AM
cause we hate people who are intolerant of other cultures. And the dutch

5:25 AM
@simchona, re ''I don't think you can say its incorrect, considering Japanese has no L sound in the first place.'' Yes? Then how do the Japanese newspapers in Tokyo, the English newspapers there, run by Japanese people who are bilingual, how do they write words like London or Louisiana or lover or Maryland when they write articles in English? They use an L, sir. They not do call London as Rondon, do they? So why did they change the perfectly lovely LAMEN to the ugly RAMEN? — Daniel Halevi Bloom 11 mins ago
Why is he so vitriolic that "ramen" is wrong?

5:43 AM
I try to help, and he tells me that all of the Japanese people are wrong because they don't agree.

8 hours later…
2:09 PM
A man after my own heart. I'm not crazy, everyone else is crazy.

2:23 PM
@simchona your answer seemed to cut the right balance (is that a mixed metaphor)?
which is to say his energy in thinking himself right is...well...you know Im sure we all feel that way at some point, why aren't they all doing it the correct way which is the way I think it should be.

At any rate the question is about as pointful as "Shouldn't car be bar?" Should — schmould. It just isn't.

@Cerberus I didn't realize the context (of the people you were thinking of). Also, 'IE' sounded like such a European thing, where I don't know how Iranians (or non-IE people who visit here) might think of the term (frankly I think the closest relevant Farsi term sounds like and is cognate with 'Aryan' which has it's cultural connotation difficulties in Europe).
@RegDwightΒВB yeah, totally agree, the guy is being an ass about it.

@Mitch How do you mean it sounds like such a European thing?
And I believe people differentiate between Arian and Aryan? Or was the former the Christian sect. Hmm...

as to Arian that was the Christian thing, Aryan is the nomadic people of the steppe the original PIE speakers

2:32 PM
Indo-European

>_>
remind me again, indo = indian?
(just for context)

yes, inclusive of indian and iranian but it's too much of a mouthful to say Indo-Iran-European.
@Cerberus probably sticking my foot further into my mouth but lets say 'a European thing' was a way of saying Eurocentric.
(and for the record, race/ethnicity != language, even though sometimes it is a convenient co-occurrence)

By how is IE unduly Eurocentric?
Only half of the word is about Europe.
@JourneymanGeek Yes.

Sorry, I'm unfortunately just continuing my misunderstanding of the prior context.

ahh, ok

2:38 PM
Yes, you included 'them' with the other half of IE.

Not specifically with the other half, I think, but with the whole!

@JourneymanGeek Indoe is slang that stags use during mating season, e.g. "I'm gonna get me some indoe". It's quite vulgar and sexist, but that's stags for you. They treat their females like property.
4

ahh, sorta like indoe outdoe ?

:D lol yeah

looks disapprovingly

2:43 PM
at moi? bats lashes innocently

Very innocently.

That's me! I'm super innocent.

unlike the stags.

they nasty

2:48 PM
Your vision and goals for your new practice sound like an incredible opportunity.

@RegDwightΒВB Yeah, that question was garble.

@RegDwightΒВB Excuse me?
Did you unlearn all meaningful languages in Antalya?

What about you? Did you unlearn all browsing the main site?
Heck, it's even on Google now.

lol
they are quick

Eh we don't receive German Google here.

2:57 PM
It's on UK Google too

And I didn't know Google Germany held live broadcasts.
@MattЭллен OMG it's all over the world!

All of it, right now, like an indecipherable blanket of words

@Cerberus you can google for non-German google.

https://www.google.com/search?q=non-German+google&nfpr=1&sout=1
It doesn't work!!

Then google for "how is google work".
And follow the instructions.

3:03 PM
> Sandwiches are the typical lunch food: do you usually eat them for office lunch? Homemade or work canteen? How is Google work canteen?

what's the type of speech used in newspaper headline?

Questions, more questions.

is it telegraph speech?

Oh BTW @Matt which Highlander was it? The Source? Cuz I just went to IMDb and read a bunch of very entertaining reviews.

@MattЭллен Yes, sort of?

3:04 PM
@RegDwightΒВB yeah, that's the one.

My condolences.
And, um, I think telegraph speech is way more succinct still.

it was on the BBC iPlayer, so at least I didn't pay for it

Like no prepositions anywhere ever.

Also no capitalization or punctuation.

3:06 PM
The "hope vs I hope" question seems likely to be a dupe, but I can't think how to search for it, I thought we might have something about headline stuff, or something similar

Q: Why is there omission of subject in sentences like "Thought you'd never ask."

BettyAnother example is "Hope this helps." "Thought you'd never ask." is the omission of "I thought you'd never ask." "Hope this helps." is the omission of "I hope this helps." In English grammar, normally every sentence should have a subject, right? My first thought is that these two examples ar...

Just searched for "omission subject site:english.stackexchange.com"

ah, that's why you're the mod

Oh, is it?

better skills at finding dupes is, I'm sure, a characteristic of being a mod

3:16 PM
€4 + €4,30 for worn shoes. are they magic?

Now check out the rest time.
Still nine days, two hours to go.

size 40?

German sizes.

@JourneymanGeek That's pretty small, IIRC.

3:18 PM
... shoe sizes make me want to stab people.
is an 12 EE

@Mahnax yeah I'm at 42.5 and that's not much for a guy.

Oh wow!! My collection was just lacking those!!

I have size 44ish.

3:19 PM
you could scrunch your feet up to fit!

I'm looking for that discussion of shoe sizes we had here one day.

@RegDwightΒВB I think in your sizes I'm a 46.

@MattЭллен Hey, you are being disrespectful towards the shoes: they are collector's items, not to be worn!!
@Mahnax Hello bigfoot.

@Cerberus oh! sorry, I didn't see that bit

3:20 PM
Is that Himalayan sizes?

@Cerberus 46 is only two more than you!

Details, details.

I see. collectors don't wear the shoes they collect

46 as well then ;p

@JourneymanGeek Aha!

3:22 PM
most people here are like 9 or 10
and not ee

@MattЭллен And damage their value?

Ah to heck with it can't find it. Anyway, some countries and in fact even some manufacturers have several different size systems in place that are completely incompatible with one another or even just themselves.

I think I have English size 9.5, American 10.5?

@Cerberus of course. Not being a collector, I don't know the intricacies. I've read all the comics I've bought, you see.

I think my Adidas shoes were 10.5.
@MattЭллен Culture destroyer!

3:24 PM
It's what they'll call me

First the Afghan Buddhas, now Matt's comic books!
The former of which still shocks me when I think about it.

Buddha's comic Afghans!

> Shoe size in the United Kingdom (British size) is based on the length of the last, measured in barleycorn (approx 1/3 inch) starting from the smallest practical size, which is size zero. It is not formally standardised.

They we Mohammed's, not Buddha's Afghans.

3:26 PM
This is so deliciously pointless. And that's just one sentence out of hundreds.

Oh, the barleycorn.
Of course.

Also, practical size. Whatever that is.
Me, I find anything the size of less than OVER 9 barleycorns highly impractical.

I believe qe2phonereview.co.uk also still measures screen size in barleycorns.
@RegDwightΒВB The idea is that you stuff enough barleycorns inside to make it fit.

And as if that wasn't enough, it isn't standardised.

length of the last what?

3:28 PM
Resort.
Last Wii Sports Resort.

No, of the last barleycorn I think.
It says "...on the last measured-in barleycorn", after all.

For all you know they do measure shoes internally in Wii Sport Resorts.
And if there's someone who does not, that's covered by the "not standardized" part.
And again, that's just one sentence.
The entire article is just a huge collection of facepalms.

Nice.

And of course it doesn't so much as begin to cover the subject.
Don't get me started on how we had to get my wife a pair of new Hullachan.

3:32 PM
@RegDwightΒВB In order to cover the subject, you first need to know how large your cover will have to be.
A pair of whom?

You had to add half a number to every number except in cases when you had not in which case you had to sometimes subtract half a number or not except if it was raining or Tuesday or raining and/or driving.
Irish Dance shoes.

OH! I might even learn something
A last is a form in the approximate shape of a human foot, used by shoemakers and cordwainers in the manufacture and repair of shoes. Lasts typically come in pairs, and throughout their history have been made from many materials, including hardwoods, cast iron, and, more recently, high density plastics. Production Lasts are made to varying degrees in the shape of the human foot, depending on their specific purpose. They come in many styles and sizes, depending on the exact job they are designed for. They range from simple one-size lasts used for repairing soles and heels, to hard-wea...

Nice. "Lasts typically come in pairs" sounds like a Buddha motto or a Confusius saying.

:D
I think the last in the measurement of shoe size is the size zero last

Now you've seen the last of me.

3:37 PM
lol

Something tells me we haven't.

the size zero last is one hand
This is why we need metric, so people can't make sentences like that

@reg Nortonn is back again

Nortonn Commanderr? I thought it only ran under Windows 95.

@MattЭллен Ahhh.

Q: Explain me the difference between "do" and "make", showing me when should I use each one of these words

ZigndI'm from Brazil and I'm learning English by myself. But my objective writing this question is to solve a doubt that I have, with when should I use these words. Please give examples.

@Zignd Hello there!
Good to see you in this room.

Hi @Cerberus

But I'm afraid your question is a bit too difficult to answer.

kkk

Have you looked at the dictionary entries for make and do?

3:55 PM
not yet
i got this question on my mind
and so
i asked

could you narrow the question down? it's really really really broad at the moment.

And these are very succinct entries: there are lots more uses of do and make.

Don't forget "make do"

Haha.

3:57 PM
but there is a difference between these word?

I mean there's differences in the uses of do me alone. getting into to all the differences of any other combination is just madness

or they can be used randonly

@Zignd No.
You have to use them the way the dictionary says, roughly.

You can't learn these by rote memorization

it means, a difference exist

3:58 PM
So you could memorize the entries in the dictionary.

@Zignd can you tell the difference between do me and make me?

I will take a look at the dictionary.
no

Did you see the links I posted?

I will check it right now

@Zignd I see, well there are many differences. There's only one instance I can think of where they coincide and it's quite specific

4:00 PM
Please wait a moment
And what are these instances?

the instance where they coincide? well if someone is making things that resemble people, you could conceivably say either "do me!" or "make me!" to request one that looks like you

Otherwise "do me" alone is quite sexual

And when the meaning of these words get different?

It's hard to boil down two broad verbs into a short explanation

@Zignd there are lots. I was using it as an example to show how your question is too broad

4:05 PM
It's like fully explaining all the uses of "faire" and "avoir"

Give only two examples for the two words, one for each one

Have you looked at the dictionary?
It's all in there, and it is much more complete.

Ok I'll check it

"Make me!" is a challenge, e.g.
mother: "Tommy, go and clean your room."
tommy: "Make me!"

"do me" is a sexual invitation

4:07 PM
haha

"Do me" is, as simchona pointed out, a sexual come on e.g. "do me now, up against the wall."

But one can also "do the dishes"

Which usually refers to washing dishes. Not having porcelain sexual relations.
3

hehehe usually

4:15 PM
@Cerberus and @Matt I think "do" is more related with actions/verbs and "make" with nouns. I'm correct?

@Zignd You could say that, yes. But there are so many exceptions...

Well, it's a start
Sorry guys It's time to lunch here in Brazil

Ok bye!

Q: Judging By Look

Query Day "The car is judged by look." "The car is judged by looks." Which one is correct English? Should it be "look" or "looks"?

0
Q: Appearance, Look, Looks

Nortonn S He judges people by appearance. He judges people by appearances. He judges people by look. He judges people by looks. Sentences 1 and 2 are standard English and mean the same. Sentence 3 is also equal to sentences 1 & 2, if definition 5a of this dictionary is used forcefully...

@RegDwightΒВB - Em1's question is a bit technical. If you are not an engineer, you cannot understand it very well. However your comments is in contrast to the laws of thermodynamics. — Carlo_R. 34 mins ago
Is this for real?
I'm getting tired.
@carlor, I have no patience for this nonsense. Please stop.

I am not an engineer. Carlo_R is a pineapple. I understand it, but does he?

I am afraid he's slowly but steadily pushing me past the point at which it matters.

That sounds like bad new for Carlo
hi @KitFox :)

Hiya.

4:57 PM
You having a good Sunday?

One thing that irritates me is a belligerent pineapple.
My Sunday is OK. I have already spent too much money though.

me too

@MattЭллен Yeah even I understand it.

@KitFox on necessary things?

Um...no.

4:59 PM
@Cerberus and you don't even understand how cantilever bridges work!
@KitFox me neither :D
I'm backing my friend's project: indiegogo.com/EWFracturedEmpire

@MattЭллен No I don't!

Well, I kind of forgot that I was going to need to pay this woman for two days of help, and also buy stuff for the little one's party on Thursday.
So I might have to return my new water socks and sandals.

Water socks? New-water socks? What is this grammer?

oh no! I'm not sure what those are. sock and sandals for water?
like for swimming with?

And who should know if not you as a sockpuppet?

5:01 PM
@KitFox well, those sound necessary to me

@MattЭллен Cool!

yeah :D

Water socks. You know, things you put on your feet that let your feet get wet, but keep the barnacles from tearing you up.

oh, nice! like a wet suit

You live among barnacles?

5:04 PM
Yes, during the summer.

Do these also protect against sand? I don't have barnacle issues. But sand issues I have.

And the sandals are just sandals, but it is hard to find non-strappy, girly, thong-type sandals for women, so I bought boys sandals.
@RegDwightΒВB Yes, they do.
And rocks and such.

Well gr8 u tell me now.
I spent all of Turkey on sand issues.

They have a rubber sole and sort of a meshish, lyrcaish top.
I've got to check and make sure the boy is asleep. brb.

I guess I could put some sand on our terrace just so I can walk around in antibarnacle socks.

5:13 PM
Sure. Why not? Or you could walk around in the public fountain.
So I can't decide between writing, napping, or playing Lego Star Wars.
I've got about an hour.

Which Lego Star Wars?
I've played the first three episodes.

My parents play through all of the Lego games, except Harry Potter.

I dunno them's a bit repetitive after a while.

Yeah, that's what I think, but they have a blast with them.

I will try out every demo that comes out, but it will never get me hooked.

5:18 PM
@RegDwightΒВB The Complete Saga.

Ah well. Live up to the name. Complete it.

I used to hate them, but I have gotten quite fond of them because my four-year-old can play them on his own with ease.
But of course, since he has started playing them, I feel compelled to check all the damn little boxes.

I used to play them much more but then I just switched to real LEGO.

Which I can't do when I play with him because he just wants to play and have fun.

Well whatever you do, I gotta go cook now.

5:21 PM
"Honey, come over here so Mommy can jump on this box."
"Mommy, I'm killing the Emperor. Can you please help me?"
"But, the box..."

I started getting hungry today.

Yay!
Does that mean you can fit stuff into your stomach now?

@RegDwightB - Sorry, I did want! But mine was a good comment. :) AFK BBL

Kind of. It can still be painful at times.
Plus I wouldn't mind losing a couple kilos more.

Well, keep it dull for a while.
Try not to enjoy eating.
;-)

5:22 PM
For that I'd have to try not to enjoy cooking first.

sighs It's tough.

Or let Oprah cook or something. I'm sure her stuff is egregious.

My boys and I made pizza yesterday. That was superfun.
Plus, I got to explain how yeast works.

@carlo good comments don't demean others

...hmm, I still have some dough it the fridge. Enough to make a calzone, I'd bet.
BBL

5:25 PM
@Carlo_R I fail to see how your comment had anything to do with mine, to which it was replying, to the question at hand, or the reality at large. As simchona points out, it was demeaning to boot, but that's actually secondary. It just plain didn't make sense.

How is Nortonn still asking questions?

CU @Kit.

This is nonsense.

@Mahnax not him. Someone else who's now been merged into him.

@RegDwightΒВB Same person, different accounts?

5:26 PM
@mah there have been lots of merges for that giu

@simchona Oh yes, I remember.

Well we've been seeing a lot of this f===u///nn===y formatting lately, have we not?

And duplicate questions

I don't even have those funny characters he uses...
Yes, and duplicate questions.

I'm surprised he's so persistent

5:27 PM
He's really pretty insane.

Anyway! Cooking! Then eating!

Insane people are frequently persistent.

@KitFox Seconded.

If I take my time then also football!

Hey, I'm out of shredded cheese.
Do you think I could substitute string cheese?

5:27 PM
That is inacceptable.

Did anyone notice Dan bloom has like three accounts now?

@KitFox I really wouldn't.

Ramen question, and one per scare quotes question

Shredded cheese is not to be substituted. Shredded cheese is unsubstitutable. Indeed, some argue that you must not substitute shredded cheese.

I wonder if my husband needed this fresh mozzarella for anything in particular.

5:29 PM
Speaking of shredded cheese, there's some in my kitchen, and I'm off to pay him a visit.

We have a couple varieties of shredded cheese at KFC/Taco Bell.

@mah how much of it is really cheese?

@simchona All of it, Taco Bell cheese is real.

KFC - my Kingdom For Cheese

Except for the nacho cheese sauce, but that's not shredded.
Anyhow, I need to go to work now, so bye!

5:31 PM
Thats good to know actually

cya @Mahnax

So my eldest is going on a trip with Gramma starting tomorrow.
He'll be away from home for two nights.

5:54 PM
This is a mighty tasty pizza.
om nom nom

6:21 PM
@KitFox and the youngest?
@KitFox what topping do you have?

Kit has a topping? Not topless?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 naked pizza is just dough unappetising

Oh the pizza has a topping.....

@simchona - Thank you for your suggestion. :)

So I may have, er, encouraged dan bloom
but I haven't been back to the site since to see what he did after he emailed me

6:32 PM
well, nothing catastrophic, so far as I can see. Nortonn S, on the other hand, just doesn't know when to quit

bloom's approach seems to be very peevish. "why isn't it spelled 'lamen' instead of ramen? YOU'RE ALL WRONG I WENT TO JAPAN ONCE"

has he changed his name? I can't seem on the user's list
or was he just unregistered?

two unregistered accts from what I can see
so far

ah
well, he seems to have taken your advice
mr shiny wrote to me after i contacted him and he told me the first question was hopelessly messy and i do not know how to fix it so i suggest deleting the entire fuirst mess adn i will shut up npow here and lsiten./..danny — Daniel Halevi Bloom yesterday

some of my advice anyway
I advised him to edit the original question... but whatever.
whoa there's a Highlander 5?

6:41 PM
I know! I couldn't even remember Highlander 3

I was warned not to watch 2 so I never watched anything after 1. except the TV series
Oh... is it "Highlander: The Source" that you're talking about?

brb phonecall

Yeah so Wikipedia has some nice words to relay about highlander 5.
