12:01 AM
It wasn't meant to be super super accurate
it just good enough to do the task at hand

What do you mean?

I mean it works and does exactly what was needed

With perfect accuracy, the odds of a number randomly choosen between 0 and 100 falling in any of the groups of 20 (0-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, 80-100) is exactly equal for all 5 groups

But of course I wouldn't mind a replacement for ChanceOf() function
I know its equal

So writing a function that specifies which of those ranges doesn't give you more control over parameters. It just makes your code inefficient...
And the function confusing since the parameters are not named in function calls in this langauge

12:03 AM
what do you mean?

What part?

if(Utils::ChanceOf(0, 100, 0, 70))
Static Function ChanceOf($Min, $Max, $From, $To)
{
    my $Chance = (int)Random($Min, $Max + 1);
    return $Chance >= $From && $Chance <= $To;
}
It is named

The parameters aren't named when calling the function.
The same function in Swift, for example, when calling it, would look like this:

Like AppleScript?

Utils.chanceOf(min:0, max:100, from:0, to:70)
And then it'd make slightly more sense because at least I know what all 4 of the parameters are in a function I'd expect to just take 1 parameter

12:05 AM
Yea it does not do it like that I do function calls the same as C/C++/Perl/Python/PHP/C#/VB etc
However it could be optional to name it

Right, and that's fine that your parameters aren't named
But if your parameters aren't named, then a function like chanceOf, which I'd expect to take just 1 parameter needs to take just 1 parameter

I agree it does get messy if you have a ton of params and they are all numbers

This isn't a critique on the language, but on the function.

It could be re-written to take one yea
At the time I thought I might want more ranges
like a chance between 20 to 90 on one call and 20-30 on another

But at the end, you just want a percentage change
chanceOf(20/90)

12:10 AM
I ended up using it for that yea lol

chanceOf(20/30)

by then I had already used the function like 50 times and felt changing it wasnt worth the effort
It does need changing though
What would you recommend for a new ChanceOf function

A bool?

This is the Random() function wiki
http://ubersoft.org/sputnik/wiki/index.php?title=Core_Function_Random
A bool return value sounds good

Static Function ChanceOf($Chance)
{
    return $Chance <= (int)Random(0, 100);
}
@bazola Did you look at GameCenter stuff yet?

12:17 AM
@nhgrif yeah I did but not completely yet. But can I enable all of that stuff while the game is local to my device?

Yeah. I've seen game center achievements on single player games before.

True '50182' False '50420'
Function ChanceOf($Chance)
{
return $Chance <= (int)Random(0, 100);
}

$true = 0;
$false = 0;
while(true)
{
if(ChanceOf(50))
$true++;
else
$false++;
printf("True '%s' False '%s'\n", $true, $false);
}
seems a good 50/50

- (void) reportAchievementIdentifier: (NSString*) identifier percentComplete: (float) percent {
    GKAchievement *achievement = [[GKAchievement alloc] initWithIdentifier: identifier];
    if (achievement) {
         achievement.percentComplete = percent;
         [achievement reportAchievementWithCompletionHandler:^(NSError *error) {
                  if (!error) {
                      NSLog(@"Error in reporting achievements: %@", error);
                  }
             }];
    }
}

I will try to implement it, I suppose I "rushed" ahead with my implementation because I want to be able to test the balance of having the achievements unlocked asap

- (void) completeMultipleAchievements {
    GKAchievement *achievement1 = [[GKAchievement alloc] initWithIdentifier: @"DefeatedFinalBoss"];
    GKAchievement *achievement2 = [[GKAchievement alloc] initWithIdentifier: @"FinishedTheGame"];
    GKAchievement *achievement3 = [[GKAchievement alloc] initWithIdentifier: @"PlayerIsAwesome"];
    achievement1.percentComplete = 100.0;
    achievement2.percentComplete = 100.0;
    achievement3.percentComplete = 100.0;

    NSArray *achievementsToComplete = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:achievement1,achievement2,achievement3, nil];
- (void) loadAchievements {
	[GKAchievement loadAchievementsWithCompletionHandler:^(NSArray *achievements, NSError *error) {
        	if (error) {
            		// Handle the error.
        	}
        	if (achievements) {
            		// Process the array of achievements.
        	}
       }];
}
It's all here: developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/… Seems easy enough.

Q: Implementing DAO with SOLID

user3590149I might not be keeping with Single Responsibility with my DAO. I also implement a custom observable through update. It makes sense because when something changes in the data, then it makes sense for the observers to be updated. Is there way for me separate them but still able to update when I u...

@nhgrif Hrmm, I should have. Oh well, too late now. Maybe if we end up figuring out how to make some significant optimizations, I'll write another one and pull the old optimization stuff into it.

It's not too late.

Ehhhh, feels a bit rep-whorey at this point

Monkevening

But they're two distinct answer--two distinct thoughts.
And the style answer pushes the performance answer really far down

1:30 AM
@Phrancis evening

Evening, Phrancis

But I'm going to bed. I can only run tests on the library at work... and I can't get the time profiles I've created from work to home, so I'll have to look for osme more details tomorrow

@nhgrif hrmm, ok. Works for me :). I'll go ahead and split them, I suppose.
Ok, awesome :)

Lots of Obj-C above, @UberFoX is in good hands here :)

It's two answers now, though I feel a little dirty... Oh well. I remember a meta post a while back where the community came to the conclusion that multiple answers was not only not a big deal, but a good thing.

1:33 AM
I can code C/C++ but never got into Obj-C

ObjC is a surprisingly different beast than C or C++.
(Though it really wouldn't be hard to pick up with C and C++ backgrounds)

i don't know why so many people talk bad about it.. at least i don't know yet

It has a lot of problems coming from its C roots, but overall, I quite like it. It's just.... You can feel the baggage in it sometimes. And it does some things in rather non-traditional ways, which can throw people off.
I definitely understand why Apple is trying to move away from it though. Without a C background, the edges of it could get pretty rough (but really only in like 0.5% of situations).
Well, and before ARC, it was an error prone mess of memory management :/

I got into it heavy after they released ARC so maybe that is why I've had better luck with it

Yeah me too, but I've been unfortunate enough to have to work with some pre-ARC code.
It's certainly.... tedious.

1:41 AM
Well, of course this question reaches 1K views in one day and without being on the hot list...

1:53 AM
Interestingly, the Stone Game question has been around since 2009.

But now, prizes are involved, and why not do the work yourself when you can just get some random Internet strangers to do it for you?

Would someone be kind enough to give a short explanation (or link) to what T means, generally?

T?
Like List<T>?

I see T and maybe <T> all the time
That^ @ckuhn203

placeholder for a type, usually

2:08 AM
There ya go! That was a good question. Thanks guys.
Learn something everyday.

So List<T> would mean, a list of type T in short?

@Phrancis yep, where T is substituted for an actual type when you instantiate it
so you might have List<int> or List<double> or List<MyClassType>

So, I've been working on mimicking C#'s Enumerable class. I'm getting along pretty good, but I'm stuck on a name for a method. Anyone have a sec to talk it out?

Thanks @Yuushi that makes things easier to understand :)

@Phrancis No problem

2:12 AM
@ckuhn203 sure

It's built on top of Collection, so I need to a method to convert things like Worksheets and Ranges to Collections.
I can determine how to convert based off of the type of the variable passed in, but I'm not sure what to name it.
It will look something like this.
Dim a as New Enumberable
a.MethodToBeNamed Worksheets
Convert maybe?
It will set a to be a collection of sheets in that case.
FromCollectionLikeObject?

so my VB is non-existent...
is that like Enumerable a; a.MethodToBeNamed(Worksheets) ?

Yes, but it's not really Enumerable. It's something in VB6 to mimic it.

and Worksheets is a type?

Yeah. It's all of the worksheets in an excel workbook.

2:20 AM
Worksheets.ToEnum(b)erable() ? via an extension method?

No. Class method.
    Private c as collection

    Public Sub ToEnumberable(coll as Variant)
        for each item in coll
            c.add item
        next
    End Sub
Dim thing as New Enumberable
thing.ToEnumerable(Worksheets)
That could work. It's supposed to set the private class variable.

so... Worksheets implements IEnumerable but not IEnumerable(Of Worksheet)? is that right?

Ummmmmm kind of. I think.
I'm not sure what IEnumerable(Of Worksheet) does.

3:33 AM
I got scolded by my wife for having bacon on pizza I ordered... what?

is she secretly vegetarian?

mmm...bacon

No i don't guess so... she prefers "sausage" (pork hamburger with seasonings)...
This "sausage" thing in the US is weird... It's not actually sausage (as in, not in a casing) and it's literally just ground pork with seasoning added... But if you call it ground pork (what it is), you get funny looks...

do Americans ever use the word "mince"
or is it always just "ground"?

Occasionally, but mostly as a synonym of "ground"

3:43 AM
interesting...pretty much never see "ground" used in that way here

Only when we're talking about mince meat pie @Yuushi.

@Yuushi so if you go to the grocery store, you order one kilogram of minced meat?

And those of us who eat that get looked at kinda strange when we mention it.

@Phrancis Yep

3:50 AM
@ckuhn203 what's wrong with ToEnumerable?
(hi!)

@Mat'sMug Heya
thanks Santa

:)

@ckuhn203 it's the notation for IEnumerable<Worksheet> in
hi @Bhathiya-JaDogg-Perera

Are you Mat ? His Mug ? or Both ? :D

3:58 AM
Actually I think it would be simpler to have a FromCollection and a FromArray and a FromEnumerable and heck FromValues also ()
@Bhathiya-JaDogg-Perera I'm Mat.
;)
and TTGTB, 'night @all!

@Mat'sMug night

night
^^ Those might come in handy :D

4:15 AM
@Mat'sMug ToEnumerable indicates that it's returning an enumerable.
In this case it's setting a property.
Which is why I decided to just scratch the whole idea and let the property do it's job.

When you include C libraries, there are no namespaces whatsoever, so you simply pollute the global namespace.

so actually your putting your classes like under java.*

Damn @CaptainObvious busy body aren't you?
Anyone on right now knows a little ?

2:22 PM
A little bit. What's up @Phrancis?

This OP says this code is on a website. Looks like MS Access. He's asking about SQL injection but I don't know enough about vb.net to know if he is vulnerable...
For example...
thisCommand.CommandText = "SELECT Stroke " & _
                            "FROM (Stats) " & _
                            "WHERE ([N° Cylinder] = @cylinder) " & _
                            "ORDER BY [N° Section]"
thisCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("@cylinder", cylinder)

if @string is just replacing it with whatever the user types in, then absolutely

Does it look like one could set @cylinder to 1; DELETE FROM (Stats);

I don't think that's what it's doing. I think it's a parameterized query, but that doesn't change the fact that he shouldn't even be using access as a back end to a website.

I thought that was odd too

2:29 PM
@Phrancis did you see my answer? and the comments on my answer. it's not good what he is doing there

Q: Default Code-Prettify highlighting for c# incorrect

Vogel612Recently I had quite a few edits to include the correct syntax-highlighting for c# questions, which is: <!-- language: lang-csharp --> That's needless editing for a thing that could also be done via machine. I suggest defaulting to lang-csharp for questions asked with c#

Monking ... all

Monking... monkey ;)

@Malachi no clue...
but if Jerry says, then Jerry might be right.
even though Loki didn't complain..

@Vogel612 it's simple code and I didn't see anything blatantly buggy

@Malachi me neither, but it's c++,

Malachi has approved 90 edit suggestions and rejected 35 edit suggestions

I am finding stack exchange really, really slow right now.... is it just me?

I...really can't see a bug in that code

> bottle is a crap name for a counter. Make it bottleCount, leftBottles or about anything else, but don't name it bottle. Because it isn't a bottle...

@ckuhn203 you're welcome
if I keep getting votes I may break the 200 rep mark today
hopefully I get another accept

I got a bunch of random accepts a few days ago.
All different OPs, all at once.

thanks @rolfl . So what's the plan now?

With the updated question, I have raised the issue to the attention of the SE devs.
they are looking in to it.
apparently, prettify is trying to figure it out by itself when it encounters something unknown.
and its auto-sensing is better than the specific tag?

Q: Edits by other users to clarify the question to keep it from being closed

MalachiSpecific edit in question How should we handle edits like this one? I assumed that the user that is suggesting the edit is actually the user that posted the question and has now created themselves a real user rather than a generic user1234 user. I don't know if that is true or not though.

Enumberable is coming along. =)

Bonjour @Mat'sMug

I'm not sure if I'm real happy with the API though. It drifted away from being a "static" class.
Repeat is way cool though.

Nice! I saw your question too late :(

It's ok. I got some pretty good answers.

It's nice to get FGITW'd in though :)

3:48 PM
And I'll probably post the whole thing once I'm happy with it.

You have to! ;)

It's getting big.... I might leave out parts that have already been reviewed.

Q: Crowd movements

user51190I've done a program in order to calculate the time required to evacuate a room. The program takes in arguments the number of people (N), the dimensions of the room (L,l), and the location of the exit door. People are represented by 1, and free places by 0. At each step, people can move of one squ...
