12:01 AM
I think, tecnically, it has a worst-case/best-case possibility of log (2n) / 1
But it averages out quite well.

@rolfl Did you had a similar solution in mind when you wrote that a good solution would have that complexity, or how did you know such a log(n) solution would exist?

I did not have the solution at hand, but I figured the additions were the only way to progress things, and that as you progressed the additions would get larger...
I think the from-the-end solution is much better than what I would have tried the fiorst time.
I like to think I would have found the same solution if I thought harder about it ;0
The math, as you have laid it out, is convincing.

Yeah, you probably would have sooner or later :) You are a monkey, after all.

The point about the complexity though, is that I had a fair idea of what the limit of any solution would be.
I would not have been happy till I found it ...

Yeah, good point about the additions would get larger. That's indeed a good reason for why it's log.
@rolfl That is exactly why I spent so much time on this question, I knew there had to be a much simpler solution. I wasn't happy until I found it.

12:07 AM
Well, for me, that's my first answer in days .... so, it's good to get some rep ;-)
Hmmm ... my first answer in a week. Shameful. Though I have answered a few in Meta

12:21 AM
@rolfl Is it the moderator-effect? Or the lots-of-things-to-do-at-work-effect?

It's probably not moderation stuff. Not too much of that this week. Though, if rolfl has work stuff to do, I can still cover. I'm not going to be busy for a while.

I am launching a new initiative at work...
Also, spring has brought some problems at home.... and, it is a busy time-of-year for family.
So, for example, today, it's gardening, and yard work.
This week has been spring concerts at both kids' schools.... and, my wife, being a kinfdergarten teacher, has to be involved, so I have much more kid duty ;-)
Then, it is coming up to end-of-school year (ask Jamal) which means report cards.
In essence, my wife normally has the house running like a tight ship, but, she's not a super-being, and she can't do it all.

12:38 AM
I don't think anyone can..

TMI?

I have barely time to do the things I want to do now, I wonder how life would be with kids and a house and stuff...
TMI??

Well, that's it. I am not complaining. I think it is 'easier' for younger, singler (and fewer kids) people to spend more time here....
Too Much Information ....

JvR
@rolfl Yeah, it's 2:38 here, and I'm wondering why I'm awake.

But, I have been keeping tabs on everything, and, if anything, have been even more active in chat

12:39 AM
@rolfl Don't remind me. :-/ I'm still waiting for two more grades.

How have they been so far?
You going to need another year?

B in software engineering and D in calc III. Still waiting on discrete math III and computer system security.

Let me bore you with a final-year-uni story

Grade ranges are A - F I assume?
Monkey story, this is going to be interesting!

That depends on whether or not I fail a class (a D is not considered failing) and whether or not I need to retake computer architecture.

12:41 AM
I did a commerce degree..... (business, marketing, accountancy, etc).
I hated it, and I failed accountancy 2nd year, twice.

Storytime!!!

I wanted to do sciences, but only discovered my bad choice after I was too committed to the accountancy.
My dad was a chartered accountant, growing up I thought I wanted to be the same
Anyway, by failing accountancy twice, I ended up having to do another year at uni to get my degree.

Damn

So, I did the things I wanted to do, in that final year. Math, physics, Computer Science..... and two stupid commerce cources to get a degree.
Human resource management 2nd year, and Marketing 2nd.
They were 'the easy courses', and I only needed the credits for them.
I missed most of the lectures because I was a stupid kid ....
And, I crammed for the final exams the night before.
For Human Resource Management, I crammed until like 5am ... and then fell asleep, and slept through my alarm.
I woke up about half an hour after the exam started

JvR
@rolfl No pressure.

12:46 AM
If I did not pass the exam, I was going to miss getting a degree ... again.
I stopped about a kilomter from the exam, and, popped the bonnet/hood, and got my hands greasy on the engine, then when I got to the examiner, I made excuses avbout my car breaking down.
It worked, and I got an extension.
but I had to write the exame right there....!
I got put in a small room, and was given the paper, I wrote like mad, and was finished at about the same time as the other studentes finished their exams.
I wrote the 3 hr exam in about 1.5.
I don't know how the hell I did it, but I passed with a B.
I never actually learned anything about Human Resource Management.
I think I loaded up my brain for about 12 hours..... and then it all escaped the moment I put my pen down.
I have no idea about what I studied, what it was about, or anything.
Anyway, I got A's for Maths, Physics, and Comp Sci.
The only problem with the way I did things is that I always got jobs in the finance industry, until about 5 years ago.
So, i have always been 'the banker' even though I hated finance.
And, my comp-sci education is pitiful
But, I got a degree.
Also, for many people, 17 is too young to try and choose a career/education
And, when in doubt, don't do what your dad did, just because it worked for him

I'm feeling that way, too. Getting some pretty low grades and hopefully still getting a degree. But then I'll feel disappointed for having a not-so-high GPA, which could affect my entry-level employment.

It is a crazy-tough gamble you have to make. I don't envy anyone starting out in this 'workforce'.
Places like IBM have a good internship program, but you have to be willing to do some crap work, just to get a job, then the carreer is mapped out quite structured.

I'm still wondering if I'm in the right major. I know many ask themselves that as well.

You have to change jobs a few times if you wantto get decent advancement

JvR
@Jamal And from my experience, you'll never be able to tell.

12:55 AM
What ^^^ says
I am really happy with where I am now. I have a great job.
Is it because I went through finance, databases, etc first? Maybe

Well, I'm a senior and I'm not good at anything else pretty much, so I just have to keep working towards completion.

That is about the only thing I can say with some certainty/generalization..... finishing the degree is more important than what the degree is in.

JvR
Ain't that the truth!

Anyway, when I did university, it was a big thing to graduate....
Now I have a resume that says B.Comm from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Anyone heard of that?

JvR
Is that in the afterlife?

1:00 AM
Back ... just pulled a tooth ....
Ahhh.... parenthood.

JvR
Yeah, I've met people who go: "If I had to start over, I'd never have kids."
I love you too, dad.

Your parents?

JvR
Can't blame 'em, though. Not that I was a rough kid, but they had a bumpy professional time.
South Africa! I guessed correctly.
And that would be worth something if I had announced my guess.

Yup .... South Africa, but since then, I have spent 3 years in the UK, and. .... 14 in Canada

JvR
So you're not so fluent in Afrikaans or Dutch anymore?

1:04 AM
I am, actually.... it's an odd thing.
I really learned to speak Afrikaans when I got to England.

JvR
Sounds useful. Blend in with the locals when you order at the bakery.

South Africa is a complicated place .... not only are there Blacks, and Whites (and Coloureds, Indians, Orientals, and Hotentots... and ... let me think .... nope, that's about it).
But, in each of the colours, there's languages too.... So, the whites are English, or Afrikaans.
In SA, afrikaans kids and English kids never played together, lived together, or even went to university together.

JvR
Apartheid, right?

Well, for Afrikaans, and English, no....
it was just the way it was.
Sort of like in Canada, where there's French, and English, and very few places where you have mixed communities.
You just never 'saw' people, or 'integrated' with the other cultures.

JvR
We have some mixing in Belgium. Dutch/French/German. Also English in Brussels due to EU headquarters.

1:09 AM
All my friends were English-speaking ..... because those are the people you have the most in common with.
but, when I left SA, all my friends were South African .... ;-) English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu, etc.

JvR
Share a language, share a culture, I think.

Suddenly I was hanging with South Africans, and I had to learn the languages.
In SA, I never needed to.
Now, when I go back and visit, I am the official translator from the family.... I have more afrikaans experience than my siblings and parents (well, my older brother spent 2 years in the army, which was mostly Afrikaans-speaking)
But his afrikaans is ..... crude.
And, if you think that learning English and Afrikaans is necesary because those are the languages of South Africa .... here's an eye-opener:
South Africa has eleven official languages: Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tswana, Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu. Fewer than two percent of South Africans speak a first language other than an official one. and Dutch was dropped in 1984, so between 1984 and 1994, South Africa had two official languages: English and Afrikaans. The English version of the South African constitution refers to the languages by the names in those languages: isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sepedi (referring to Northern Sotho), Setswana, English, Sesotho (referring to Southern Sotho), X...

JvR
Yeah, Dutch was dropped in 1984, but if you know Dutch, you can kinda, sorta, bit-by-bit make out Afrikaans.
So that's one out of eleven. I got this, I got this.

And, when you speak afrikaans to a dutchman, they think you are speaking dutch from the 1800's like english people think of the king-james version of the bible, or shakespeare.

JvR
I beg to differ. :p

1:15 AM
As it happens, flemmish and Afrikaans are more similar than dutch and afrikaans.
I was able to do better in Belgium, than Netherlands.

JvR
We had lecturers in Afrikaans, sometimes. Rarely.
The grammar's similar enough; the vocabulary is a problem.
But I think it's an awesome language.

The language is 'harsh', but that makes for some amazing poetry. My favourite poetry is Afrikaans.
Also, the language is 'new', and it has so many influences ... it's adaptable

JvR
But the words often are Dutch, in a sense, it's just that we don't use them.
Plaatsvlak? What's that? It's something flat and placeable, but... Oooh, a farm.

Like, there's a place called tweebuffels that was rumoured to have ben called .... Actually, Wikipedia confirms it:
Tweebuffelsmeteenskootmorsdoodgeskietfontein is a farm in the North West province of South Africa, located about 200 km west of Pretoria and 20 km east of Lichtenburg whose 44-character name has entered South African folklore. The name was used as the title for an Afrikaans lyric written by and performed by Anton Goosen. The name, which follows a common format for place names in South Africa, is Afrikaans for "The spring where two buffaloes were cleanly killed with a single shot". The literal translation is "Twee buffels" = "Two buffaloes", "met een skoot" = "with one shot";...

JvR
"Two buffels with one bullet shot dead fontain"?

1:19 AM
Yes.
But, not just dead, "mortally dead" ....

JvR
Morsdood, yeah. Really, really dead.

and fontein is a spring,
Ysterperd?
Care to guess?

JvR
...Ice on a horse?
Metal horse?

Yster -> Iron .... a bicycle

@rolfl I have to say, a degree is one thing I'm missing.

1:22 AM
It's not necessary, but, if you start, you should finish

JvR
Dawn will be here soonish. Better sign off and score some snores.

Also, 'in todays day and age' .... there are other ways to get there, but I am not the person to do that.

JvR
Cheers, everyone!

Cheers. Nice chat.
Totsiens
lekker slaap.

JvR
Luutjes. :p

1:28 AM
Hi @miracle173

@rolfl I studied 2.5 years to become a teacher, then quit that. Then studied one year web development.

I only have an associates degree

@SimonAndréForsberg You are a teacher here though....
And you seem to like it.

Yeah, that's true.
I think I chose the wrong subjects to become a teacher in, I chose civics and mathematics. Should have gone with programming instead of civics perhaps :)
Not sure "civics" is the correct word for what I studied though... wait a minute...
Well, dictionary says 'civics'...

4 hours ago, by rolfl
A 'good' solution to this would, I guess, have a complxity close to log(n) where n is (max(c,d) - min(a,b))
@Claudiu ^^^^ if you join here.
@SimonAndréForsberg Civics is .... politics?
Math is interesting though
(at least for me).

1:55 AM
@rolfl It was politics and social-studies and well... things that has to do with the society. In Swedish we call it "Samhällskunskap", which, freely translated would be "Knowledge about the society".
Math is very interesting yes.
Although there's a big difference between knowing something and being a good teacher in it.

That is true.....

The reason why I quit was partially because I did not think that I had the motivation to be as good a teacher as I wanted to be.

... oh?

I'd probably be better than some teachers, because there are really some horrible ones out there. But then there were also teachers who were just brilliant :)

no-one ever has the motivation to work.... other than being paid.

1:57 AM
If I want to get paid there are other works for that :)

Even the brilliant ones normally would rather be fishing
3

Which brings me to another, very big, reason: Swedish teachers are horribly underpaid!

And that is true for any career.
(the rather be fishing thing).

@rolfl Should we tell them: "Go fish"?

@SimonAndréForsberg - my wife teaches, I know they are underpaid ;-)
(And, in Canada, they get paid well, by most standards).

2:01 AM
There we go :)

According to the founder of College Humor, I should apparently start learning Python and Rails: gawker.com/…

@Jamal I can actually recommend Python :)

I may take a look at it, after Java.

I have not heard much about your Java progress.... ;-)

I won't start until next fall, unless I get bored this summer and decide to open my Big Java book.

2:12 AM
We're looking forward to that, and I hope @Mat'sMug will learn Android development :)
Big Java book? I've heard about Effective Java, but not Big Java...

And, of course, you all will be there to kick any bad habits out of my head. Java doesn't have a big no-no akin to C++'s using namespace std, right?

Sure it does.

@Jamal the biggest comparable no-no to that would perhaps be import java.util.*; <--- I don't like that. But, IDE's take care of such stuff automatically :)

Um.... do not use the default package!

(And I do hope you will use Eclipse ^^)
YES! That's one thing!
But those who know what they're doing doesn't use the default package, so that's not a big problem

2:16 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg It was given to me as a gift by my first C++ professor.

@Jamal My suggestion: Read some tutorials from Oracle, implement one of our old weekend challenges, such as "RPS(LS)", post a Code Review question, and most importantly: Listen to what I and @rolfl say :)

@SimonAndréForsberg When I used the first time with C++, it was kinda annoying. I can still use it for Java, if it's a good choice.
What about Hello World? ;-)

@Jamal Only one: using Java.

Yeah, Eclipse isn't really built for C++. It's mainly built for Java.
@Jamal Hello World and Fizzbuzz are optional :) Do them if you like 'em.
(Late) Night!

@SimonAndréForsberg Later.

Hmmm ... I found a bug in the one-vote query
Fixed now.

@Jamal I have told him that he should change his question, IMO his code is not broken, he just wants to change one of the features of the code.
Your question contains a lot of code that is reviewable. I think you could get a lot of help from us. I suggest that you edit your question and don't ask us to change the behavior of your program. Instead, simply ask us to review your existing code. Simply saying "I have made a Tic-Tac-Toe game, please review my code" would be enough. — Simon André Forsberg yesterday
I have told him what to do, he doesn't do it? Well, then he ain't getting a review.

@SimonAndréForsberg I figured. Still didn't read the Help Center, either.

@RajivChadZ Stop ask us to change the behavior of your program. That's not what we do around here. Code Review is a site for cleaning up code, for making the code do the same thing but in a much much better way. Please fix your code and come back, because your code really needs to be cleaned up once it works correctly. — Simon André Forsberg 11 secs ago
This user deserves to hit 200 rep, which will give him a rep-boost on entire SE.

@SimonAndréForsberg That only happens for new accounts.

Q: Sample n items without replacement in Prolog

S0rinI have the following Prolog code which samples n items from a list without replacement: samp(0,_,Sample,Sample). samp(N,Domain0, Sample0, Sample):- N >= 0, length(Domain0,L), RandomNumber is random(L), nth0(RandomNumber, Domain0, X), delete(Domain0,X,Domain1), append(Sa...

@rolfl What do you mean "new accounts"? I'm quite confident that once he hits > 200 on SO, he will get +100 on all other sites.

I am unsure about that ..... but am happy to be proven wrong.

Only two more upvotes needed for him and we'll find out :)

hmmmmm

He also got the 101 on SO.
odd

3:46 PM
I believe monkey has been proven wrong :)

weird. I wouldn't have expected that either.

It's not odd, that's the way the system works. As long as you're only on SO and have > 200, you don't get it. But when you register on another site, you get it.

So, he has 11 accounts, and a few upvotes on one account's questions has earned him 1.1K
He'll have a nice surprise in his status bar.

That's how it was for me a long while ago, I only had an SO account with a bunch of rep and then I created another account, I believe it was on Programmers, and then I got +100 on both SO and Programmers.
Indeed he will :)
Welcome to Code Review, thanks for understanding exactly what this site is about. As a thank you, I just helped making sure that you got the Association Bonus in the Stack Exchange network. Welcome! :) — Simon André Forsberg 7 secs ago

@rolfl that is almost as bad as Friday
@rolfl that's wrong
remind me not to unplug this computer. there is something loose in it or something, I set it down (I was about to plug it back in after like 10 minutes and it went dead.
I just came back up and got everything opened up again
where are my JavaScript ThinkTank Members?
what does this mean?
> No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource.

@Malachi I assume you are doing an Ajax request? To prevent XSS attacks, these are commonly restricted by a same-origin policy. The header you mentioned can be used to relax this policy by explicitly allowing other domains.

I can't run the script I have to pull information from the stack2rss because it is a different domain
@amon lol, yes
I am trying to make my Javascript bot return entries from an RSS feed

Q: Adding classes, does this code slow page rendering?

Duplo WJavaScript: $("#menu").find("div:nth-child(2), div:nth-child(3), div:nth-child(4), div:nth-child(5), div:nth-child(6), div:nth-child(7)").addClass("menuDivs"); Is there a more efficient way of writing this line of code? As I don't want to repeat this example for all of my tags that need a clas...

so I don't know if I can change that Header? or create one because it is not my site

4:48 PM
I think I might have found a way to make it work. we will see. I don't have time today to set it all up. my lady must be done reading. she is making noises in the other room now. gtg

I will be updating the "status" command on BlueCheeseMonster so that anyone that wants to know what I am working on with the bot can Jump over there and type in "CR status" and it will tell them what I am doing currently with the bot.

@kleinfreund I've been using Firefox since... forever, and it doesn't crash when I have 2000 tabs open.

2000?
WHY?
I was using Firefox a long time as well. But it got slower and slower. Chrome was ahead of Firefox the last few years in terms of speed.

Because I'm too lazy to close them
Now I'm on just 500 though
And I might need them in the future once
tl;dr I'm a lazy person

I never have this many tabs open. If I need them (want to read that article later, need that ressource, ...), I save them to Pocket. If I need them temporarily, for testing, whatsoever, I drop them in the bookmarks folder.
The only time I have more than 10 tabs open at the same time is, when I'm researching/debugging a development related thing and check SO posts and GitHub issues.

5:27 PM
@skiwi Ever heard of bookmarks?

5:37 PM
> 1. go to tvtropes or wikipedia, start on some random page
> follow interesting links
> 2. ???
> 3. it's 2AM, you have >>100 open tabs, the computer is struggling
> bookmark everything for “later”. Do it again on the next day.

The way I'm currently reworking most of the under-the-hood parts of my site leads me to thinking that I'm going to change my whole design sooner than later. ._.'
Jesus, Phil! That design is just a few months old!

@SimonAndréForsberg Yeah, I use those for things I really want to not forgot ;)
@kleinfreund The only time when I have less than 10 tabs open is when my browser has crashed.

Touché

It crashes only once in a few months though, the only pain I feel is that my pinned tabs are gone then, but I usually have a few screenshots around so I can restore them ;)

Currently, I have three pinned tabs open: Gmail, Twitter, 2nd Monitor.
That is followed by three regular tabs: 0.0.0.0:4000 (running my site on a local server), github repo of another user, site of that user
Wait, doesn't Firefox restore pinned tabs?

5:50 PM
Not when it has crashed
What I like particularly though is that when you go to open a new tab, then search for a site, then it finds that you already have a tab open of it, and then when you go to it it automatically closes the new tab

6:06 PM
Oh, nice. That sounds good.

6:26 PM
chrome restores tabs

6:54 PM
buffing restores chrome

7:06 PM
https-everywhere breaks the login...
and the css and js...
and I dislike that very much..
hi btw.

Who is btw?
just kidding.

Q: Why doesn't attempting to edit count as a pass for a review audit?

Dan NeelyI just got a question in the review queue that, though poor, I thought was potentially salvageable via editing. However when I clicked the Edit button I got the deleted post error. Since the post was gone, I clicked I'm Done (what is there do do with a deleted post?) only to get the review audi...

Q: Minimal webcrawler - bad structure and error handling?

user2169327I did this code over one day as a part of a job application, where they wanted me to make a minimal webcrawler in any language. The purpose was to crawl a site, find all of the URLs on that page, and crawl on to other pages. The code had to be able to resume operation if shut down (that's why I s...
