Wow the PPCG chat room took 3 years to get a name. Ours only took 3 weeks.

1:49 AM
Congratulations @AnnonomusPerson @PeterR.Bloomfield @sachleen! You guys are in for quite a ride ;)

@AsheeshR Thanks. We've been discovering the delights of the mod tools. Looooads of stuff to look at!

It gets even more interesting when you get to use them ;)

there were actually quite a few flags already in the system when we started
sorted now though :)

When you get the time, I would suggest getting started with this.
1
A: Using board names as tags

AsheeshRBased on the answers given (Thanks @Butzke!), I felt it prudent to create a tag list of sorts for all the official boards. Feel free to add any missing board with the desirable tag name. If you disagree with any of the tag names, please mention so in a comment. Uno - uno Leonardo - leonardo Due...

Before things become too much of a mess.

already started :)
going by number of votes, the consensus seems to be using tags like "arduino-uno", and make tags like "uno" map onto them

2:05 AM
whats the syntax for a tag in a post?
so you can make it clickable

[tag:name]

thanks

@PeterR.Bloomfield Yeah. I still feel the arduino is mostly redundant though. Anyways, whatever is the majority call,..

@AsheeshR I'm inclined to agree for several cases, like "uno". However, I can see how it will cause problems for things like "ethernet".

Q: Who are the notable bloggers in the Arduino community, and how can we get them involved?

AsheeshRWe have established a repository having some excellent questions. Its now time to get the word out about Arduino. There are many people in the online world who manage very active and productive blogs. These individuals have a lot of referral power. This will help us reach new audiences and gain m...

2:18 AM
@PeterR.Bloomfield I have kept that in mind here.
Even for cases like pro and mini, the full name makes sense.

@PeterR.Bloomfield - thanks to AnnomousPerson we now have a bunch of questions on each side of the divide

@TheDoctor what do you mean?

A while ago i reviewed about 30 edits by him which changed to , and i thought we cleared that up

by consensus, we're going with the "arduino-uno" form

@TheDoctor That did have 1 net vote vs. 14 net votes for adding the [tag:arduino-*]...

2:32 AM
there's a lot of this stuff to wade through though... rest assured we are working on it, and are happy to hear suggestions :)

Someone really downvoted the welcome mods post? That's... sad.

3:03 AM
@hichris123 Officially mods, then :P

out of random curiosity, how do you all pronounce "Arduino"?

@TheDoctor What do you mean? The moderators decided that it would be best to keep it uniform and do arduino-___ always. They have been synonymised. If you find an error, please mention it on chat.
@PeterR.Bloomfield R - dwee - no
Three syllables
I believe that's the 'official' way to pronounce it.

that's 3 syllables :)

@PeterR.Bloomfield No 3 different sounds... there's a difference.
Oh yeah you're right.

that's how I pronounce it too... my boss tends to say it more like "arr-dway-no"

3:09 AM
@PeterR.Bloomfield Hmm.
translate.google.com/#auto/en/arduino Google says it like I do.
Minus the accent.
And my R is more emphasised...

Google's English pronunciation is weird... it sounds like a BBC news presenter

@PeterR.Bloomfield It sounds like computerized AM English...
Google is a USA company, after all.
Night everyone going to start heading to bed I'm tired.
Polishes diamond and sleepily yawns

sleep well
*waves*

@PeterR.Bloomfield Wierd formatting.
You too.

@AnnonomusPerson lol, not quite. :P
in Software Recommendations, Feb 24 at 14:24, by Journeyman Geek
oh my god... it's like seeing the rise of Nazism.. trying to show the other people their error and hearing as an answer: "We as a community don't care about". Psychology teach that human being have to work hard to put theirself into discussion. As human being we are always trying to see just only the ideas which confirms our belief!!!! Is it possible that it's so clear for me (after 3 years of studying psychology) and so hard to see for you? I'm saying you a valid answer was deleted. You confirm it was a valid answer and you only want to see that Gilles mistake it's not that bad — Sam 40 mins ago
^^ When you get called that on meta, you're an official mod @AnnonomusPerson. :D

3:22 AM
@hichris123 Wow, I'm struggling to make any sense of that.
I'll certainly do my best not to be too Nazi-like anyway.

@PeterR.Bloomfield Yeah... don't try to. :P Basically, a user got their posts deleted and was eventually suspended, but before that they called the mods Nazis.

@hichris123 That rarely happens on small sites.
Its more common in larger communities.

@AsheeshR That was on Software Recommendations though. :P

@hichris123 Software rec already has a larger community than most sites at one month.

Software Recommendationssoftwarerecs.stackexchange.com

Beta Q&A site for people seeking specific software recommendations.

Currently in public beta.

Well, kinda.
They have more SE veterans, sure, but view count is only 3x as much as ours...

3:26 AM
Thats more due to the nature of the site. Once you get a recommendation that satisfies your current requirements, many users are not likely to come back for a while.
You are not solving an ongoing problem, as is the case on other sites.

3:38 AM
@AsheeshR Most questions I have on SO are not ongoing problems - e.g. "How do I get this code to work..."
I solve it, and if I have another question, it may not be related.
(Actually, I haven't had to ask a question on SO yet - all the answers are already there)

@W5VO If you happen to be working on a large code base, as I have seen in many questions on SO, they result in a series of questions. Same goes for amateurs, one question on being solved leads them to another. Of course, this is not always true. I was mainly trying to get across the point, that if I get to know which media player I should use, any further questions that I may have regarding the software, won't be asked on softwarerecs.
As opposed to questions that come up during a project, which may involve multiple problems at different stages.
In general, I find software recommendations to be a rather strange path to go down for SE.

How is this an answer?

A: What is the difference between declaring a variable outside of loop and declaring static inside loop?

Void MainAccording to Atmel's documentation: "If a global variable is declared, a unique address in the SRAM will be assigned to this variable at program link time." The complete documetation is here (Tip #2 for global variables): http://www.atmel.com/images/doc8453.pdf

Am I missing something in this?

11:52 AM
It looks like only part of an answer. I'm assuming he means to imply that static locals won't get a unique address in SRAM. I don't see why they wouldn't though.

12:08 PM
@PeterR.Bloomfield Static locals, from the point of declaration, have similar behavior (to globals) in memory. That^ is highly unlikely.

Q: What should we do for Arduino Day 2014?

AsheeshRFrom the official Arduino site: Arduino Day is a worldwide celebration of Arduino’s first 10 years. It's 24 hours full of events – both official and independent, anywhere around the world – where people interested in Arduino can meet, share their experiences, and learn more. Who can part...

12:23 PM
Is there any point of keeping the room name change pinned? The room name is mentioned in bold on the top right :)

1:00 PM
@AsheeshR Unpinned that just had that there for the first few days so someone didn't go "Where did the chat room go?"
@TheDoctor Tell me if you need something deleted.
@TheDoctor Undo here is a moderator at software rec
@hichris123 :)
@TheDoctor For closing my meta question it was so others don't nominate themselves... it can be bypassed still but it makes it so a new user can't do anything without a couple people to reopen it. I asked some other moderators and they recommended that.

1:55 PM
Wrong chat room... :)

zmo
2:25 PM
hi!
@AsheeshR I can't disagree more with what you're saying about the flashing, and the USB/HID stuff!

Hello again :)

zmo
hello again ;-)
I find that insane that you say the "bricking" concern is really real. Bricking can only happen when playing carelessly with fuses

I was referring to what comes after damaging the chip as being real, not the process of damaging it.
i.e. finding another atmega, finding another arduino, reprogramming, etc.

zmo
ok, but you cannot damage it by doing a DFU update
as you can only change the fuses through ICSP/JTAG/DebugWire programming

So, the OP's concern in the question is not actually a concern?

zmo
2:30 PM
indeed, it's not actually a concern
he may at worst have to buy another arduino and a few wires at the local shop

Are you guys taking about uploading new firmware to the 16AU\8AU chip for that question?
HID?

@zmo Thats exactly the concern I was referring to (on meta). Boards are hard to get, and pretty expensive depending on which part of the world you are in (or the currency that you use)

zmo
@AnnonomusPerson indeed

@zmo I've read a few places that you can't brick it by uploading the wrong firmware on the USB chip.
BRB let me find a link.

zmo
@AsheeshR well, that's part of the answer and the teaching, if you want to do advanced work with hardware, you have to also get the right tools

2:33 PM
NOTE: There is no chance of ‘bricking’ the device using this method. The Arduino bootloader firmware can always be updated using the DFU protocol!

zmo
and trying to solve a hardware (or firmware) problem with software-only work, is making two problems instead of solving the former.
@AnnonomusPerson well, I didn't even took care to look up on the intertubes for a solution, as the question has been on hold since it's been asked, showing the OP that what he wants to do is not possible, and guiding him to reask on the windows SE his question
where at worst someone will give him a windows-API answer that can't be more wrong

@zmo If you feel strongly enough, why don't you go ahead and edit the question to make it clearer, removing the Windows aspect. I had a go at it, but I felt I was writing an entirely new question, so I stopped.

zmo
trying to emulate an input device from a serial device is insane!

@zmo Windows SE? Superuser?

zmo
windows.stackexchange, if that exists

2:35 PM
@zmo Nope. www.superuser.com

zmo
@AsheeshR I do believe the windows part shall be kept, so there's a chance for the person that will answer to tell the OP that he is wrong thinking so

But that's not really relevant. Referring to Super User

zmo
@AnnonomusPerson ok, I'm not much of a windows user, only got one to run atmel studio :-)
and that one is driving me crazy :-)

@zmo :)
Where do both of you stand?
(Besides inside a house)

zmo
well, windows failed to install my jtag ice 3 drivers! And I can't understand why
I'm inside a flat :-)

2:37 PM
Pretty much where we were when we started :)

@AsheeshR Both want to close it?

Not exactly.

@AsheeshR What do you want then? On topic but tell him he's wrong?

zmo
actually re-reading the question, Method 1: To me a preferred method would be to develop an actual Windows device driver so it's detected as a keyboard. well he does not need to develop it, it's working per default! :-)

I mean it can't be done...
@zmo :)

zmo
2:40 PM
anyway, please people with enough karma
vote for reopening!
I only joined today
so I have close to no karma ;-)

I would like to see it reopened if it can be rephrased to be more open towards solutions.
And in general, have the problem be ...well... better explained.

@AsheeshR Yes. The first method should be deleted though, we're not driver_writing.stackexchange.com

zmo
well, I've really seen worst questions who stayed on SO because it had great answers that made the question less crappy

@zmo Yeah I guess someone could do a script that reads the serial data and simulates key presses.

zmo
I'm a believer that one shall not change the meaning of the OP's question because it's important to teach the OP what he thinks is wrong
@AnnonomusPerson and there are so many reasons for that to be wrong

2:43 PM
@zmo The answers should not define the quality of a question, IMO.

@zmo What?

@zmo People do far weirder stuff all over ;)

It's simpler than writing a device driver, that's for sure.

zmo
@AsheeshR but we're building a Knowledge Base, aren't we? and that kind of situation where people think of wrong solutions for a good problem, it's good to keep as is to show the wrong "thinking" by giving a good answer and explaining why this is wrong
@AnnonomusPerson indeed, but more complex than using existing drivers

@zmo If they don't want to mess with firmware... that was their concern. But yeah, firmware is easier...
@zmo Edit it. It doesn't seem to "worth" in it's current state. Then ping me when you edit it. It does have potential, but I can see that the user didn't look that hard into the problem.

zmo
2:47 PM
then, they should stop working with arduino

@zmo Again, I am open to reopening, if the question can be made better, and made to read like its worth saving.

@AsheeshR Agree with you.

btw, @zmo have we interacted before?

zmo
ok, offered a rewrite

@zmo Looking in queue

zmo
2:53 PM
I tried to keep OP's questions
while trying to be more open
I never made an edit that radical on SO :-)
and I guess it would never have been accepted over there :-p
@AsheeshR I don't know, I got the memory of a 32u4..err.. a goldfish
:->
though I'm often on #arduino/#avr on freenode, and often answering arduino questions on SO

@zmo It's better, but IDK if I should open it myself. I do have mod so it'll open it with my vote. I want to see how the community reacts to it.
It should be at the top of the queue.

zmo
ok :-)
then I'm preparing an answer in vim

@zmo It's hard being mod on a beta when they're no rules. It's sometimes nice, like painting on a blank canvas, but then if someone else doesn't like your vision...

zmo
@AnnonomusPerson I've founded a hackerspace, and the pattern I believe the most in is "it's better to do something and apology, than waiting for permission and never do a thing"
the only way for you to know whether someone does not agree with your vision is to act, and then that someone will get a change to raise against you
that's actually what I did for that post! :-)

@zmo I live my life by that rule. However, [in conversations I'm not allowed to quote] what we predict is often much different than the common person believes.
@zmo Yeah I'll probably act in the future more, the tools just are a bit overwhelming. I can't disclose everything...
I'm going to leave for a bit ping me if you need me...
No @HiChris !!! No pongs either :P (Sorta an inside joke)

zmo
3:01 PM
ok, as you say in [whatever I don't you're referencing], I can't help you on that, then :-p

@zmo We have a hidden chat room for moderators.

zmo
I'm just kidding :-)

@zmo Oh :)

zmo
3:28 PM
@AnnonomusPerson ok, ping me whenever the post is reopened, I wrote a full answer :-)

@zmo Okay I will.

zmo Is it possible to build a HID device (like a keyboard) using an Arduino uno? yes it is! And there's a great tutorial on how to do that over here At the time being, I have button inputs on the Arduino giving outputs on the serial line. So, how can I transform my current firmware into so...

@HiChris Have you ever looked at this setting?
It should ring, even when you're not ringed. And chrome has the "enable desktop notification." I'm turning it on, no need for ChatOverflow.

4:32 PM
@AnnonomusPerson Huh, interesting.

@hichris123 thanks, i didnt want to get 750 rep to just look at that

@hichris123 If you mute it with chrome it'll show up on the side as a popup with "enable desktop notification." using it now works great.

@TheDoctor Now get 2750 rep to halp burn the CV queue! :P

@zmo I was referring to the votes.

@hichris123 does 2750 rep lift the 20 reviews a day limitation?

4:36 PM
@TheDoctor What do you mean? On SO, since the CV queue is so large, we always get 40 reviews/day in the CV queue... is that what you mean?

I can review at 500rep on PPCG and arduino, why 2750
Too bad i can't put unicode in my name

@TheDoctor Yeah once I tried to put the diamond in my name :)

@zmo i mainly created it to get away from the conversation
And i created arduino SE because i love arduino

zmo
arduino is just a framework, a bootloader and electronics, every question asked here can perfectly be a question on StackOverflow, CodeReview, EE ...
I do believe that somehow arduino.se should be an aggregator of the arduino tags on those sites :-)
@TheDoctor it's like I'm creating a numpy SE because I love numpy
whereas it's just a python library :-)

Someone should create a Python SE

zmo
I don't think so
it'd be killing the principle of knowledge base
I actually always thought the smart thing was to separate concerns by usage and not by technology
are general AVR questions relevant on arduino SE? and are MSP questions still relevant? and what if I got a question about a Melzi board / Marlin firmware, relevant?
and I'm not even talking about PIC, Stellaris or ARM based microcontrollers
where should be the limit?
well, those questions are mostly rhetorical, because I don't think there are good answers to that
and btw, what about the new XPCC framework that just got out, being more respectful to C++
maybe if it was microcontrollers SE, or IoT SE or embedded SE or something like that, it would make more sense
but arduino is really too limiting
I guess I may do a meta question about that :-)
