12:29 PM
@Cat Okay, so if you'll put your email here and then delete it, I'll copy-paste and send you the pdf.
Got it.

Cat
thanks!

Character creation:
Come up with three pithy phrases describing your character. One is a short summary of the character's fundamental concept; one is the thing that makes life complicated for the character; and one is up to you.
Then rank from most to least how your character does things: Carefully, Cleverly, Flashily, Forcefully, Quickly, or Sneakily.
Then work with the GM to come up with a "stunt," which describes a particular general situation in which your character is particularly skilled or can do things others might not be able to.
And you're done.

Cat
Sounds good. I'll check out the other char sheets to get an idea for how it's done.

The "ranking from most to least" is actually a simplification of "assign to them the values of +3, +2, +2, +1, +1, and +0."

Cat
OK.

12:38 PM
But yeah, same smell really.

Cat
Can I be a multi-class character?

There are no classes.

Cat
Like a sorceror/thief?

If you want to be a thief who can also use magic, that is totally cool.
The core of your character is your aspects, the three pithy phrases.

Cat
OK.

12:40 PM
The High Concept is how people might describe you to each other.

Cat
I'm thinking a young, inexperienced.

"Who's he?"
"Oh, he's a `humiliated hedge wizard`."
Now, aspects are easy to make, but a bit complicated to make good.
> Aspects allow you to change the story in ways that tie in with your character’s tendencies, skills, or problems. You can also use them to establish facts about the setting, such as the presence of magic or the existence of a useful ally, dangerous enemy, or secret organization.

Cat
Young, inexperienced thief/street urchin discovering her inborn magical abilities
I'd love to eventually have some sort of "shadowdancer" type character

I like it.

Cat
Thanks. It's not original, but it's a concept to work with.

12:44 PM
Best way to build a character is to talk backstory and goals.

Cat
I just have to figure out why she'd be in the enchanted forest.

So, grew up on the streets. Probably not grown yet?

Cat
Yeah, young. Maybe 17.

Magic-heavy city, trading town, port city, pilgrim town?
What kind of environment is she used to?

Cat
City with a thieves guild

12:46 PM
Was/is she part of the guild?

Cat
She wants to join, but needs to become more skillful.

Okay.
Now she also need a Trouble: something that regularly complicates her life.

Cat
Perhaps she is on a quest to obtain some magical ingredient or item in the forest.
Something that could help her.
So it would have to be something that could trouble her in the enchanted forest?

One of our PCs is Rejected By Destiny, another has trouble with keeping his hands off things that are Just Lying There, and the third is driven to prove he is Not Ineffectual.

Cat
Perhaps she becomes insubstantial at inconvenient times.

12:48 PM
Yes. Every time one of your aspects complicates the current situation, you get game currency. Your Trouble aspect is the one that you're telling me you want to be the most bothersome, but good aspects always have the potential to complicate things.
So what is it that makes her life hard, what gets in the way of her goals?
Is she too compassionate and often Does the Right Thing instead of taking advantage of people? [grin]
Does she lose her temper easily?

Cat
I'm thining...
(thinking)
I need something that I can call upon often in the enchanted forest

A personal issue is often good.
An obligation, perhaps?
Don't try to come up with the pithy phrase right away.
Once we have some concepts to chew on, then we can work on polishing up the words.

Cat
She has trust issues.

Ooh, good.

Cat
I need a good bend on the trust thing.

12:54 PM
Is there some group or type of people/person in particular that she automatically does or doesn't trust, like women or people with pointy sticks?
Why does she have trust issues?

Cat
I have to think of the why first.
I want it to relate to her powers.
She was lured into a trap with her best friend (another street urchin) as a younger girl. They were beaten badly, her friend to death, by someone in the thieves guild trying to suss out if she had the shadowdancer powers.
Now she wants to join the thieves guild to get revenge
and to become more powerful

brb
Sorry, someone's using one of my dad's photos without permission and tracking down who I need to talk to is kinda hard.

Cat
bummer.

I think I need to talk to the Guam Bar Association. It's always fun when you accuse lawyers of copyright violation.

Cat
np
lol, there's a bag of hammers.

1:08 PM
Interesting.
Okay, so: is she distrustful of authority? is she afraid to make friends because they die or she'd feel like it was betraying her best friend to have another friend after?
Does she think everyone has ulterior motives, or is suspicious of anyone who offers help if she can't see how they benefit from it?

Cat
I like that last one
Hmm.
I just don't know if it's broad enough.

Okay, let's go to brass tacks.
Aspects (Trouble or not) have three roles.
An aspect should be easy to imagine filling at least one roll. A good aspect easy covers two. An awesome aspect can be seen in each role.
- You have to be able to invoke the Aspect when you need a bonus or a reroll.
- The Aspect has to complicate your life to some extent, so it can be compelled to gain Fate Points.
- You also want to be able to invoke the Aspect for effect.

Cat
I think maybe "She distrusts strangers because she thinks everyone has ulterior motives" is more useful.

Okay, I like it. Now, her aspect might also say something about how she acts because of this.
Is she a glad hand who fools people into thinking she trusts them?
Does she not speak willingly to people she distrusts?
Does she try to act normal? Does she fail miserably at doing so?

Cat
No, I think she takes the cynical approach to strangers.
Which doesn't win her friends or favors.

1:22 PM
@Problematic New player!
Working on aspects.

3... 2... 1... Fight!

Cat
Hey @Problematic

@Cat [tips hat]

Aspects are supposed to be a group thing, so... now we're groupish.

Cat
:)
Group how?
They need to relate to how the char interacts with the group?

1:25 PM
Ideally, character creation is done together, with everyone giving suggestions and ideas.

Cat
Great. More heads are better than one

Aye.
And yes, it does tend to lead to characters that are more interesting to play together.

I'm trying to decide if Wil would be protective or try to establish a pecking order

Cat
So far I have a young shadowdancer-to-be who mistrusts strangers.

We're still working on a reason for her to be in the Forest; so far the suggested motive is "gain/prove worth/skill to join thief guild."

Cat
1:29 PM
I think she's looking for something magical to aid her in her quest to join the thieves guild... or perhaps a mentor?

Escape?

Cat
Escape is possible too.
She's looking to join the thieves guild to exact revenge on someone who killed her friend.

Ah, yeah.

To clarify: the "someone" is in the guild. So she's basically infiltrating to destroy from within.

Cat
She's demonstrated some magical abilities so far, but can't quite control them.

1:31 PM
So perhaps she's looking to learn to control her abilities?

Cat
Yes, that sounds plausible to me.

Through a magical focus item, or a teacher, or experience...

Cat
Exactly

Would she have a particular goal in mind "This one item I heard of," or "This legendary shadowmage;" or would she just be going into the Forest because that's the kind of place one goes for this sort of thing?

Cat
I think it's an item/mentor she's heard of

1:32 PM
Either is totally legit. The Forest is the kind of place where you can just wander around and Things Will Happen.

Does she ever break loose and display power beyond her norm?

Cat
Yes, I think so.

Three of four PCs are seeking magical improvements.
Got any ideas about this mentor or item, or do you want to ask the GM/group to make suggestions?

Cat
The group can suggest
If everyone is looking for a magical item, then perhaps searching for a mentor would be a better strategy

I'm questing for my staff. It's not unreasonable to assume I'd want company.

1:36 PM
It's always reasonable to want company in the Forest, if you're not a local.

Oh, and I can tell you aaaaall about what the books have to say on the topic of shadow dancers.

Cat
I haven't looked at it in a while.
Oh wait, you mean in char.

Yeah.

Cat
lol

Wil's something of a nuisance, you see.

1:37 PM
Traveling in groups calls more attention to yourself, but something will notice you sooner or later no matter how careful you are, and when that happens it's nice to have friends.

Cat
Fair enough

(Physical combat is not a guaranteed element of this game, but it's very possible.)
So, Wil's missing staff.

@BESW (I think Wil is guaranteed to get into at least one fistfight)

Trying to find Charlin's destiny/why he can't use magic.
Adrian isn't looking for something in particular, except self-control and a home that will accept him.
And a magic item or mentor to gain mastery over shadow magic.
...sounds like the Caves of Fire and Darkness might be on the tour.

Cat
I'd second that approach.

1:41 PM
They're a shortcut (if you don't die) through the Mountains of Morning, and in themselves contain a great deal of magic and knowledge.
So for some of you, the Caves could be a goal in themselves; while for others the Caves are a shortcut to get to your goals.

And if you do die?

Then you probably don't get where you're going, so it wasn't a shortcut.

But only probably.

It's the Enchanted Forest. Anything's possible.

Wuahaha.
Death sounds like one possible way for Wil to overcome his ineffectuality.

1:44 PM
The youngest son of an ailing king was once sent into the Caves of Fire and Darkness to find the Waters of Healing. His two older brothers, of course, had already failed.

Cat
lol

Naturally, along the way an old hag told the prince that when he found the Waters, he was to use the tin dipper and not the dipper of gold and rubies to scoop the water from the fountain.
But when he got there (and saw all the slabs of rock that were the previous heroes and princes who'd used the gold dipper instead of the tin one), the gold dipper was so beautiful that he thought "Just touching it can't hurt, if I don't use it to scoop up the water."
As anyone could have told him, he started stiffening up as soon as he touched it.
But he was more clever than the average prince, and remembered that the hag had told him to use the tin dipper to sprinkle Water on the stones to restore them to life.... so he thrust his stiffening arm into the fountain immediately.
This had the desired effect of preventing him from becoming a slab of stone, but instead he became an animate stone statue.
The Enchanted Forest rewards the clever, the polite, and those who keep their promises. It is very rough on the impatient, the insincere, and the arrogant.

Cat
Uh oh, lol
I guess cynicism is a form of sincerity ... being sincerely mistrustful.

It'll be fun to see how things work out.
The Forest does often give people the chance to correct their mistakes.

Cat
I agree!

1:53 PM
...although if you're rude to a dragon, it'll probably eat you.

Cat
I'll keep that in mind ;)

And dragons have really esoteric and complicated etiquette.

Cat
Perhaps it's best to say nothing at all...

That'd be rude, though, wouldn't it?
[grin]

Cat
beats me

1:54 PM
Wil probably knows!

4d6

I do not.

Cat
Good thing too

In fact, I know the wrong thing.

Cat
1:54 PM
Oh great.

Don't worry, it's all academic.

Well, that's a -3, with +3 Clever and +2 Talk the Talk, right?

Cat
So we've been told
What were the categories again?

so you got a Fair result without invoking anything.

Curse my innate charm and rugged good looks.
Don't you have to invoke stunts?

1:56 PM
The Approaches are Careful, Clever, Flashy, Forceful, Quick, and Sneaky.

Cat
I think Sneaky dominates my char
Followed by Careful
Then quick

@Problematic No, stunts are basically "specific free effect as if you spent a Fate point whenever this particular scenario emerges, because you're that good at this thing."

Also, dealing with a dragon I think I might have used Careful. Since I am not nearly as clever as a wise and powerful dragon. [grovel]

Cat
Or do you get to pick which you employ each time?

in RPG General Chat, Apr 21 at 4:52, by BESW
A stunt is basically trading away the versatility of a Fate point in your hand for the reliability of a single Fate point effect.
@Cat Each roll's approach is determined by how you're doing the thing.
The Golden Rule of FATE is to describe what your character's attempting, and then we figure out how the rules can help resolve the action.

Cat
1:58 PM
Hmm?
So you roll, then assign and approach to each value?
(an approach)

Ah, no.

Cat
Your order of approaches is always the same?

For character creation, you assign the +3/+2/+2/+1/+1/+0 spread to the approaches.

Cat
(depending on char build?)
OK, that's what I originally thought

Then if you describe an action as being done Cleverly, you add the Clever modifier to the roll.

Cat
2:01 PM
GOt it

If you're doing it Forcefully, you instead add the Forceful modifier.

Cat
So my order would be Sneaky, Careful, Quick, Clever, Forceful, Flashy

Sneaky: Good (+3)
Careful: Fair (+2)
Quick: Fair (+2)
Clever: Average (+1)
Forceful: Average (+1)
Flashy: Mediocre (+0)

Cat
Got it.

Whoops.

2:03 PM
@BESW I assume that dealing Forcefully with a dragon is a poor approach, so what if I get a stellar result? Not intimidated, but perhaps amused enough by the brazen human to give him what he wants?

Okay, got it.
@Problematic One of the amusing things about FATE is that with sufficient Fate points and invocations you can achieve nearly anything.
It's just a matter of then not having any resources left to deal with what comes next.
You have to choose which successes you bull your way through.
Because once you've successfully bullied the dragon, you're out of Fate points to buy off my compels to complicate your life.

I just can't see a dragon being bullied by a staffless wizard

@Problematic If you succeed at it, it's probably because you invoked several appropriate aspects. So those aspects would explain why it worked.

Turns out, I discovered the dragon's True Name in one of my books.
@Cat so how did we cross paths?

Cat
2:09 PM
OK, so far I've got:
Sindaria “Sin”

Sneaky: Good (+3)
Careful: Fair (+2)
Quick: Fair (+2)
Clever: Average (+1)
Forceful: Average (+1)
Flashy: Mediocre (+0)

Aspect: Mistrustful of strangers because she assumes they have ulterior motives, giving her a cynical approach to strangers that doesn't win her favours or friends.

Background: A 16 year old street urchin who early on showed signs of shadow magic. This reputation got her and her best friend lured into a dark alley where they were both beaten badly (her friend, to death) by a member of the thieves guild trying to confirm the presence of her powers. Now

It's open for all to edit.

Cat
Great.

"Anonymous Hyena"
Good trouble summary.

Cat
So does Will have a dwelling in the enchanted forest?

Suggested starting place for Trouble idea: Keep Your Motives Where I Can See them.

Cat
2:12 PM
Great!

@Cat No, the Wizards' Tower is outside the Forest.
He's in the Forest because his fellow wizards "hazed" him and hid his staff somewhere in the Forest.

Cat
Hrmm...

Wizards are nearly powerless without their staves, and they can always find them, but if you put the staff in an awkward place it'll take them a while to track it down.
@Problematic Got any suggestions for aspects? I'm not happy with that trouble yet.

Cat
Perhaps Sin came seeking Will at his tower to find out where she could find a mentor/focus at the tower and was sent to the forest to complicate his finding mission by the other wizards for pay?

Uhm, something like A Quick Blade Is Better Than A Beating?

Cat
2:15 PM
Are we talking my aspects?

If my friend were beaten to death, I'd be inclined to shoot first and ask questions maybe never.

Cat
You win the fights you avoid?

@Cat I like that.

Aye.

Cat
It speaks to her approaches

2:16 PM
It has her a bit skittish about mortality, and enforces the "stick to the shadows" thing.

And puts her directly at odds with Wil's desire to prove himself. Love it.

Trouble: "I don't have any friends."

Cat
How many aspects do I need?

Three.

@BESW Keep Your Enemies Closer?

2:20 PM
Your High Concept should be a sweeping description of your character, like Wizard Private Eye or Lapsed Catholic Psychic.
Your High Concept should be relevant in nearly anything you do.
Your Trouble describes something that regularly makes your life more complicated (though it can sometimes be of use).
And then there's a third that's more of a wild card, to help flesh out the character.
@Problematic "a cynical approach to strangers that doesn't win her favours or friends"

I'll Believe It When I See It?

To take a leaf from Harry Potter, "Never Trust Someone if You Can't See His Motives."

Cat
A hidden motive is harmful?

It's Not Paranoia If It's True?

Cat
lol
What it it's more directly tied to her powers?

2:25 PM
@Cat That might imply that she has transparent motives herself, which probably isn't true.
@Cat How so?

Cat
Her shadowdancing powers are unreliable...
Umm....

Like, they activate or fail at the worst possible time?

Cat
Yes.

My son says hello. Sorry for any gibberish that may ensue.

Cat
No worries

2:27 PM
@Problematic Hi right back!

Cat
She can't deal a killing blow, perhaps - she goes insubstantial first?

Plaything of Shadows

@Cat does not being able to kill things complicate every aspect of your life?

Cat
No, not really.
Maybe Plaything of shadows is good

@Cat That's too specific, but the general idea is great.
The "not being able to kill" is an example of a complication it could produce.

Cat
2:29 PM
Shadows call to her?

So if Sin is the Plaything of Shadows, she'll go invisible when she wants to be seen, be unable to hide when she wants to vanish, and other amusing crises.

"Sin is the Plaything of Shadows." Apt, I guess.

[grin]
If you accept the complication, I give you a Fate point.

Cat
uh oh, I don't know if I like that grin

If you don't want it to happen, you have to pay me a Fate point to make it not happen.

Cat
2:30 PM
I guess Fate points are good to have?

You can also decide to have it happen yourself, which is an auto-compel that gives you a Fate point.
Yes.
Any time you make a roll, you can spend a Fate point and identify an aspect that's relevant to the action in order to get +2 or re-roll.

Cat
So, do shadows have to be present for her to be their plaything?

You can also spend Fate points in other more metatextual ways; they basically represent the ability of you as a player to gain some narrative control over the scene.
@Cat We'll let that figure itself out in play.

Cat
OK, got it, I think
OK.
Sounds like a good trouble

I like it.
It'll be easy for me to feed you Fate points.

Cat
2:33 PM
Sounds like I'll be another ineffectual char, lol
Maybe that's why I have sympathy for Will and agree to help him

I DON'T NEED YOUR SYMPATHY I CAN MANAGE ON MY--- oh fine.

Wil's Trouble is that he constantly needs to prove he isn't ineffectual: this will lead to my compelling him to overpromise, overextend, and be generally overconfident.

Cat
lol
Although sympathy for a stranger would be very uncharacteristic
I guess that's not my trouble anymore

Now, here's another cool thing about FATE:
At the end of every session, you can fiddle with your character. If it makes sense based on the session's events, you can alter an aspect, switch the bonuses on your approaches around, or the like.

Maybe you're my goddaughter.

Cat
2:35 PM
Good news for the newbies.
Being a street urchin, I don't know if I have family that way

Ah, point.

Cat
Perhaps you gave me food when I was hungry
We have some sort of friendship?

@Cat For the first few sessions I'm happy to let you guys fiddle mid-session, but the idea behind being able to alter your PC after every session is that characters grow and change and develop, and the mechanics need to reflect that organic process.

Cat
Yeah, sounds wise.

Okay, one last thing for PC creation.
You get a stunt!

Cat
2:37 PM
Is there a list or do I just pick?

> Stunts are tricks, maneuvers, or techniques your character has that change how an approach works for your character. Generally this means you get a bonus in certain situations, but sometimes it gives you some other ability or characteristic. A stunt can also reflect specialized, high-quality, or exotic equipment that your character has access to that gives them a frequent edge over other characters.
> There’s no definitive list of stunts that you pick from; much like aspects, everyone composes their own stunts. There are two basic templates that help guide you in composing your stunts, so you do have something to work from.
- Because I [describe some way that you are exceptional, have a cool bit of gear, or are otherwise awesome], I get a +2 when I [pick one: forcefully, quickly, cleverly, carefully, sneakily, flashily] [pick one: attack, defend, create advantages, overcome] when [describe a circumstance].

Cat
get an advantage when I use my powers to defend the helpless?
I'm just trying to link it to backstory

- Because I [describe some way that you are exceptional, have a cool bit of gear, or are otherwise awesome], once per game session I can [describe something cool you can do].

If your character loses control of her powers on occasion, it might be cool to have a per-session stunt to do some awesome thing with your shadow powers.

Cat
Yeah, I like that idea

2:40 PM
Because I am a shadow-dancer, once per game session I can be exactly where I'm needed (a place I can see when I use this stunt) at exactly the right time.

Cat
Wow, that sounds pretty powerful

"If only we could get through this portcullis to unlock the ga... how did you do that?"

Cat
lol
I like that one

Or, depending on the flavor you want...
Because I am a shadow-dancer, one per game session I can ask the shadows a question about events in the immediate area during the past 24 hours and they will answer.

Cat
Hmmm...helpful, but not the vision I have for this char

2:43 PM
The former strikes me as more fitting for someone who doesn't really have a handle on what she's becoming.

Cat
I don't see them as being "friends"

Aight.

Cat
that's more like a later power

Whelp, gotta get ready for work. Back in about an hour.

Thanks for your help!

Cat
2:44 PM
OK, thanks!

We have a character.

Cat
Awesome!

Excellent.

Cat
So I just need two more aspects to come up with on my own now

I've given you these:
High Concept: Urchin Shadow-Dancer with a Grudge
Trouble: Plaything of Shadows
Aspect: You Win the Fights You Avoid
The High Concept needs work.

Cat
2:46 PM
How do I use the high concept in game?
aside from just playing that char, of course. Is there a mechanic?

Like all aspects, the high concept exists for you to get bonuses when it's a good thing for you and to get Fate points when it complicates your life.
Ideally, it should encapsulate the basic concept of your character (the GM may require the stunts you take to be justified by the High Concept) and should be able to give you bonuses for just about anything you do.
However, because your trouble is so solidly about your powers, I'm okay with removing the shadow-dancer part from your high concept and using the high concept to explore something else. Your mistrust, perhaps?

Cat
Give me an example of how Will would use his concept for bonuses, eg?

He's a hedge wizard, so any time he uses arcane knowledge or power he can say "I'm a Humiliated Hedge Wizard!" and spent a Fate point to get a +2 to the roll.

Cat
So it determines when I can spend fate points?
I like having the word mistrustful in there
I think shadowdancer should be in there too

You can spend Fate points at any time, but if there's not an aspect you can say is related to the reason you're spending the point, you can only get a +1 to a roll.
Having a good high concept means you'll almost always have an aspect you can point to for the +2 or the re-roll option.

Cat
2:51 PM
Yeah, I'm sure I'll have to survive with an average concept til I get more experience with the game.

"Mistrustful Urchin Shadowdancer" is pretty good.

Cat
OK, so maybe that's what I should go with

We could add "with a Grudge" if you want to emphasize that part of your character.
or "on a Vendetta."

Cat
That won't really play as much of a role in the forest, I think
I see her as attempting to use her powers a lot, as she tries to master them.
And them just happening a lot too

Cool.
If you're okay with "You Win the Fights You Avoid" as your last aspect, we're potentially done.

Cat
2:54 PM
Yeah.
What about the other two aspects?
Are those my trouble and concept?

High Concept: Mistrustful Urchin Shadowdancer
Trouble: Plaything of Shadows
Aspect: You Win the Fights You Avoid
Those are your three aspects.

Cat
So those three are the three aspects? Ok.

High Concept and Trouble are just specific names for two of the aspects because they have more specific roles.

Cat
Great!
That was fun and not overly painful

For example, you could have made "You Win the Fights You Avoid" your Trouble. That'd tell me something totally different about how you want your character's story to go.

Cat
2:56 PM
I just see her as stealthy, or at least attempting to be

Right.
Now, you could get more stunts if you wanted. I recommend against it, but you should know the option is available now and in the future.

Cat
What's the price of getting more stunts?

You start each session with at least 3 Fate points. You can permanently reduce that number by one for each extra stunt you get.

Cat
I think it's better to have more Fate points until I understand the game

Agreed.
@Cat's PC: Sindaria “Sin”.
Please star that for me.
Beautiful!

Cat
2:59 PM
Thanks so much for helping me!

Now we just need to work out the logistics of getting the game started and moving.

Cat
Like I said, I'm a go with the flow kind of gal
Figure out what works for people and I'll get behind it

@Cat My pleasure. This whole game is about learning a new system; none of us have played FAE before, and we have limited experience with any FATE systems.
