5:20 AM
Kinda feel bad about pouncing on every question that I can answer
Then again, if those #$%@ moderators are allowed to do it on their sites, so can I ;-)

5:49 AM
@Manishearth Oh go for it. In the greater scheme of things, there'll be a good solid reference base for when the site goes public.

Yeah, I know :)
Just hope that it doesn't discourage others from answering
For example, with you it's OK, since you still participate heavily
but if this discourage someone who hasn't participates much and wants to, that's not good
However, on Robotics and Chem most of the topreps had answers everywhere in private beta
that didn't discourage more answers
So it probably should be OK

6:20 AM
@Manishearth It's OK, I would venture to say it's good. If there were not at least a handful of obsessive answer posters on the site, it would become too dependent on too few people. When those few are unwell/traveling/busy with work, the site would grind to a halt. I've found that the best instigator for new people to post, is seeing an answer they don't agree with.

Yep

@Manishearth But, on a related note: I think the policy some SEs take, of nagging people to not accept an answer for at least 24 hours, is worth emulating: Maybe we could even consider adding that to the FAQ. Once an answer is accepted, as long as said answer is not incorrect, I for one never post another answer even if I have a better or simpler solution. I am aware from EE chat that others are similar.

I wait before accepting as well

So the site loses out on innovative or out-of-the-box solutions.

But I do post answers to questions that are already accepted
but it may not be a good idea to add it to the FAQ

6:23 AM
@Manishearth That's you accepting on your questions - What I am suggesting is that the site make a strong push towards asking new people to not accept ever in less than 24 hours.

@AnindoGhosh i know what you mean :)

@Manishearth I do too, but only if I feel "what an idiotic answer!". Not if I feel "well, that would work, even if it's not the best".

Nah. If I have anything extra to add that is too ling to just urge the answerer to incorporate, I post

@Manishearth I just give backroom inputs (in chat) to the answerer. Why rock their boat with a counter-answer if they aren't actually wrong?

I don't look at it as a counter-answer, I look at it as something supplemental. It's not a contest ;-)

6:41 AM
@Manishearth You'd be amazed at the response certain high rep people have to additional answers - There have been so many nasty ego battles on EE, SO and EnglishLanguage that I've seen, some that I have been part of (regretfully) because someone posted what the original accepted answer poster though was an indictment of their answer...
@Manishearth Also for enhancing value of an SE to future researchers, there is merit to improving an existing answer (if it wasn't wrong) and resulting in one (or a few) really good answers, than to have a multitude, thus creating confusion to newbies.

6:58 AM
@AnindoGhosh If the answer is more or less the same, I understand the response, though I don't condone any rudeness involved. If the answer has a significant amount of new info, that's better

@Manishearth Agreed. Amount of delta to justify a new answer is an analog value not easily quantifiable. Therefore if the poster is open to back-room input, I'll just err on the side of peace and happiness (and laziness) :-)

2 hours later…
8:55 AM
@Manishearth You could just wait a few hours before answering. If nobody else answers, not really an issue.

9:33 AM
The latest question is more squarely fitting in EE.SE than in Arduino, it isn't really Arduino Due specific other than the capacitor sub-query. What are your views?

9:53 AM
@AnindoGhosh Yep, we should ask him to restructure his question. Ask para 1 on EE, make para 2 the main q
@AnindoGhosh I edited it out

10:09 AM
Excellent. I really want to avoid giving grounds for the "duplicate of EE.SE" argument towards closing Arduino.SE.

Little off-topic if you don't mind, but does anyone see any questions on graphicdesign.stackexchange.com ?
This is what I see: i.imgur.com/gs1rGvx.png
:?
nevermind, it has resolved itself

12:16 PM
@John That happens sometimes. Caching issues on the server, I think. Quite a few posts on MSO about it.

ah, thanks @AshRj

12:37 PM
Is there anything that this is missing ?
1
A: How to use c++11?

AshRjFirstly, only gcc 4.7 and above (and therefore avr-gcc 4.7 and above) support C++11. So, check the versions installed with : gcc --version avr-gcc --version If avr-gcc is 4.7 or higher, then you may be able to use C++11. The Arduino IDE does not support custom compiler flags. This has been re...

1:06 PM
@AshRj Never used C++11, or even avr-gcc, so no idea.

3:01 PM
Hello @Seth @Polar @anorton @AnindoGhosh @Manishearth @MarkBooth

@AshRj Hiya
:-)

Hi

Lets start then :)

What's this actually meant to be?

3:04 PM
The site stats at this point show 169 users
out of which only ~30 are active

Only 1 page even have > 101 rep

@Polar Active = Even a single vote cast

Mhm

Which is something that is somewhat worrying

It's still in private beta though

3:06 PM
@Manishearth @AnindoGhosh Any ideas on tackling this ?
Ignoring the weekend factor, because we had a dip in activity pretty much since thursday
@Polar To get out of private beta we need about ~90 active people

?
Ouch

@AshRj A mailer, if it were possible, or something that pings everyone?

Makes you wonder why they don't alert everyone in private beta that they need to be active

@AnindoGhosh I am not sure if thats possible.

Otherwise it'll use up a commitment slot

3:12 PM
@Polar Commitments can be fulfilled anytime during the beta period. As sites tend to stay in beta for quite a while, there is no urgency in participation unless, you are immensely interested in the site.
@AnindoGhosh We could maybe ask SE to do that

@AshRj Would be great. Just a gentle reminder, "dudes, you have a commitment to fulfill

@AshRj I know, but people should want to free them quickly (there's a lack of incentive)

@AshRj they won't do that

@Manishearth Why not?

spammy I guess
not sure, you can try asking

3:14 PM
Worth a meta.stackoverflow question?

@Polar Yes.

Ok, I'll ask it
Or would it be for Area 51?

@Polar Private beta. This is not a proposal anymore so not A51-meta.

@AshRj Ok

We have yet to post/advertise on Adafruit and Sparkfun
But the fact that anybody will have to create an account just to see the site might be a bit of a problem

3:19 PM
Does it fit in with their policy/rules on posting?

@Polar That depends on how you phrase it ;)

@AshRj How many users have logged in once

in Arduino, Apr 6 at 15:52, by AshRj
@Manishearth @anorton Just pointing out one thing, the way a simple sentence is phrased can make a whole world of difference. An advertisement is only an advertisement if you make it out to be one.

@AshRj It's more than that - Right now people without accounts can't really participate since it is private beta, right?
Except people who have been sent emailed invites through the invite an expert thing

Yeah, there was an issue with the Raspberry Pi proposal with that
There was a reddit thing on it, but people couldn't log in, and it lost ~100 would-be users

3:23 PM
@AnindoGhosh People who have not committed can participate. They will have to create an account to be able to even see the site though.

@Polar Yes, that would be a pretty bad first impression.

1
A: Can I share the link to the Beta?

AshRjActually, there is a way to break-in to private betas (pointed out originally by Manishearth ;) ), if you share the login link, then people can create accounts and participate on the site even if they did not commit during the commitment phase. However, the content itself cannot be shared outsid...

@AshRj Oh wait what? A person who creates a new account can get into the private beta? Is there a way we can ask someone to confirm that?

@AnindoGhosh you can't create accounts on private beta
there's no login page

There is, I thought

3:25 PM
Used to be

How does this look so far? Feel free to criticise / improve it:
Here, on the Arduino private beta, we've noticed that there's a lack of active users (only 30). The issue is that 115 have logged in at least once - and that means that 85 people have thought that logging in satisfies/fulfils their commitment. Is there any way of having people gently reminded that they need to be active and ask questions/answers to see us through the private beta and fulfil their commitment?

Q: HTML manipulation lets me break into private betas

ManishearthI managed to (again) break into a private beta. I used a simple procedure, I copied the login form from another site and used the SE.com openID login. It didn't complain at all, and I wasn't committed to the site on Area51. Does this need to be fixed? (I realize that it's no biggie if a few peop...

That's just cheating :P

@AshRj Well, that's probably going to get everyone into hot water.

@AnindoGhosh But its been blocked now. Which is funny as they said Se was fine with it.
@AnindoGhosh Not really.
Buit anyways, we need other ideas

3:31 PM
You just copy-pasted what I wrote?
I've asked it, btw: here

@Polar Read the last line carefully

You removed the italics
@AshRj What else is there other than italics (i.e. removed)? Am I missing something?

@Polar See edit on MSO

@AshRj Ah, thanks :)
@AshRj Done

At this point, we are probably looking at an extended private beta unless we have a huge burst of activity on Monday tuesday

3:36 PM
Hmm, that wouldn't be good
The issue is that it's borderline impossible to get additional people to join the beta
In private, at least
And we're lacking new questions
Ooh, upvotes on Meta :) I feel warm inside

On a positive note, we have an excellent answer ratio till now :)
And 96% answered as well :)

It was 100% earlier

@Polar Anything above 90% is excellent
Plus there will be sudden changes as new questions are added. It will stabilise asymptotically.

It'll remain above 90%, no worries.

That's one issue, a lack of new questions

3:42 PM
@Polar AGREED!

We've gone down from ~20/day to 13.5
@AnindoGhosh CAPS!!!!!!!!!

@Polar YES!
@Polar 13.5 sounds not terrible, but I think if we could activate the inactive folks, things could get better

@AnindoGhosh If everyone became active, we'd be out of private unbelievably quickly.
Is Mark Booth even listening?

@Polar That's not a bad thing.

@AnindoGhosh We had 40 on day one itself
Barely six a day since then

3:46 PM
@AshRj That's expected. All the pent-up questions.

I am listening, but been busy with other things
I'll give you my perspective now though

Ah, hello Mark

Another positive that we have is pretty good meta participation.

Yeah, it seems more people are using Meta than the main site though

@AshRj Again, very few names on meta :-(

3:56 PM
@AnindoGhosh Well meta/main ratio is good
Not everyone will participate on meta, thats a given

@AshRj Of course.

Sorry, my connection was borked
The stats: they are all normal, nothing to worry about. Private beta may get delayed a week

Where's Mark's perspective?

Missing :P

@Manishearth Thanks for pointing out the obvious :P

4:01 PM
Have to go. Good night :)
Lets hope people like to work on Arduino's on Sundays ;)

@AshRj A true fan uses Arduinos every day of the week :)

Although I want A.SE to succeed, there's little I can do to help. I haven't used an Arduino yet, so don't really have any Q's or A's, so I didn't commit until after the site was already in preparation. I mostly committed so that I could help the site along with votes and suggestions. I'm actually surprised to find that there was a question I could answer (even though I did think it would have been a better question for robotics *8')

@MarkBooth Any chance of being able to 'remind' users of their commitments
?

I wouldn't worry about a private beta extension, robotics had quite a long private beta phase IIRC and it doesn't seem to have harmed us,

@MarkBooth Fair enough

4:12 PM
what harmed us more was going into beta in october and losing all of our momentum over xmas when every SE site lulls in activity

@MarkBooth Hmm odd... Why so?

it has taken a long time for our visits/day to climb back up to approaching our december numbers

@MarkBooth We had a December slump on Phys and Chem as well, but Chemistry was in a good place so we popped back up

a site gets a burst of activity when it goes public, you have to use that momentum to get people to come back, if you have a drop off in activity (like over christmas/new year break) then people don't see new Q&As when they visit so leave iot longer before they visit again and you get into a vicious circle

Yep
@MarkBooth btw, as a non-academia site, do you have a weekend slump?

4:18 PM
the main thing is that if you have a general trend of more visits then you aren't going to be closed down, that's why I've been concerned that there is a meta posty tracking stats over on sustainability as I actually think it might do more harm than good
hang on, I'll check

@MarkBooth Yep. Getting too worked up about stats is not good

yup, not a very scientific analysis, but our slow days seem to be saturday and sunday

Any idea why?

@Manishearth Sorry should have ated my last comment
Dunno, maybe people have better things to do at the weekend. *8')

@MarkBooth I thought most sites have a dip on weekends.

4:30 PM
Wouldn't surprise me, but I only have access to the stats on robotics, since I'm protem mod there
would be interesting to know whether parenting has it's dip on another day for instance

@MarkBooth Phys and Chem have appreciable drops
yesterday, by Manishearth
user image
^^that's a week (last data point is yesterday)
(we are allowed to post small portions of the graphs without axes

*8')

4:55 PM

@Manishearth Just curious, but why only w/o axes?

@Manishearth yes, I was going to post the same.

(I'm here, but I'm lurking)

That is EE.SE over a weekend also.
@anorton that page is secret and we are allowed to show a small snippet without axes. We are not supposed to show all the google analytics and such.
