Hi all, I created this room to chat about the 3D Printing.SE and start a discussion to seriously get us out of the Beta stage. Please feel free to join the discussion! All help is welcome!

Tag synonym question: "Should we add every printer brand and type as a tag?" I',m in favor to do so as people tend to search for the brand and type instead of the construction type (Prusa or Delta) , but also create tag synonyms to the construction type.

@0scar, hi!
There was a room called "the heatbed", that @tbm0115 created, but I can't find it anyway
Yes, I have often wondered about that. Wasn't there a question on meta about it? I vaguely remember seeing one, and the idea got shot down? I may be getting confused with another SE site.
However, we could try it. Is it worth posting another (if we can't find the first one) meta question about it, to advertise that fact?
Another issue I found last night is the use of community ads (see my comment here). That should lead you to here: 3dprinting.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/76/…
The problem seems to be that no one knows how to use them, or where to post them to get them up and running

@Greenonline Hi! Nice to meet :) "Heatbed room" does only cover part of what may be diiscussed here, so I took the liberty to create a separate room. Nice to mention more people.
If we want to make it out of beta it would require a substantial effort to get more questions in, I guess more questions also lead to more questions. I hope the active few around here can help us do that.

Yes, indeed. I used to ask a lot of questions, when I was building my printer, but then I gave up, half finished. If I was to start trying to finish it off, I am sure that I would come up with a lot more questions :-) However, for the most stupidest reasons I have been too lazy to start building again. I have a P3Steel and two Kossels, all three half built.

If we are with 5 to 10 regulars each posting a question every (two) days, we might get more attention and more opportunities to vote

Yes, very true.
I can't find the meta question about tags for printer brands, It must have been another site. Please post a meta question/statement about it, I think it is a very good idea. I am tidying the diy tag at the moment.
I think that there is no need for it.

I have a Anet A8 I started with, but heavily modified to make it print pretty good, an Ultimaker 3 Extended that I manage for employees at work and a self build CoreXY. All build myself, only asked one question on another site (shame on me, but was not active back then).
I'll post the Meta question, and indeed diy is rather strange as pretty much all printers are diy or bought
I'm in the process of composing my own question how to stick POM material to the heatbed as it took me some time to master... Please be gentle as it is my first ;)

10:31 AM
:-)

The nice thing of your editing older post is that they come up to top, which I then read, what I normally would not do as I'm not looking for such posts, and gives me the opportunity to vote on good questions and answers, thanks for that!

Yeah, as I was away from the site for a year the posts weren't being edited so strictly. I like to add the image tag (in addition to the image description) using the "description" after the URL of the image. I don't know why it isn't automatic. It's useful for the rollover tag, and blind people with auto-readers

Thanks for fixing mine earlier, I forgot half of them...

No problem :-)
Right, I've retagged all the diy questions. Tags disappear when no questions are left... is that right? I'm not sure if I have to delete the tag, or wait for the system to auto purge.
OK, I am going to watch some French cop series now. Message me with an @ so that my computer beeps at me so I know you've written something. :-)

@Greenonline - I didn't get this notification, for some reason. Wondering if it required a superping since I'd not been in this room before.

Welcome Paul

@Greenonline - That's right ... it takes a day or so for them to cycle out, but they then disappear if no questions are attached to them.
He @0scar ... Now that you've posted a Q/A about POM, I have a question about strength ... does it stand up pretty well to compression?

I have not tested this on the tensile/compression testing machines at work, but it is quite hard. I know it is used as low friction pads for high loads.

Yeah, super ping, that might explain a few things.

Lunch is over for me, so I catch you later, feel free to message, I'll read it later

11:54 AM
@0scar - Laters!

Hello @StarWind0
Hello @tbm0115

Ah ... bringing people over to the dark side ;-)

I've just superpinged them
:-)

My UID is a little tough to superping ...

Yeah, requires copy-paste

11:55 AM
I'm glad I saw this ... I had brought up The Hotbed chatroom and saw this new one was created.

There are two main issues I can see (1) What is on-topic, and (2) We need to get the community ads running. But I have no idea where they are meant to be posted.

Unless you are a full fledged site, you won't have community ads run on the site. You have to create community ads for other sites to run, but then they are voted upon by that site as to whether they feel it is a good fit for their site.
There is a Meta thread which is posted in January on every full fledged site where you place the ad.
I've created enough of them, lol.

Ah, so we have to wait until January?

No, we can create ads now

tbm0115 and some others have made some here : 3dprinting.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/76/…
But I don't know if they were posted anywhere else
on a fledged meta site

12:07 PM
I like the ideas of them, but there are some issues with how they were created. There are layout standards you have to meet.
Unfortunately, I need to run. I'll be back on this afternoon.
I've got to go pick up parts for my daughter's car ... great fun, lol! I have to drive about an hour away to go get them.

I have to eat my lunch now, but I'll leave this window open. Ping me with a @ so that computer beeps. :-)
Thanks for the help :-)

@Greenonline I believe there was a link posted (maybe in the comments, I'm going off of memory) in the post you provided that explains the formatting requirements.

Ah yes, I remember seeing that.
Did you make a change to your suggested edit, of the newest question? I reviewed it, improved the edit, but as I hit save the orange warning banner showed at the top of the page (subsequent edit). So I don't know if you lost an edit or the OP.

5:11 PM
Not me

@Greenonline @tbm0115 - One of the things I don't see listed in your Meta thread on community ads is, if the background of an ad suggestion is white they want you to have a black border around it. I saw a lot of ad suggestions which were white, but didn't have them.

Sorry tbm0115, I thought I was chatting to Paulster2... I beg your pardon.
Paulster - Did you make a change to your suggested edit, of the newest question? I reviewed it, improved the edit, but as I hit save the orange warning banner showed at the top of the page (subsequent edit). So I don't know if you lost an edit or the OP.

@PAULSTER2 I didn't see a requirement to have a black border in the link Zizouz212 provided, is there a better source for the requirements than that link?

@Greenonline - Not sure. I believe the OP had asked a question, then deleted the question, only to add another question a while later, of the same sort as the first but a bit different. You might have edited the original question only to have it deleted?
@tbm0115 - Here is a link to Mech.SE's community ad promotion:

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2018

Grace NoteIt's almost February in 2018, which isn't supposed to be the proper time to cycle these, but for this year it'll be once again, so we'll be refreshing the Community Promotion Ads for this year now! What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are community-vetted advertisements tha...

We may want to start another thread for it ... as that one is over two years old.
Along with the created ads, we should also discuss which sites might be a good fit for 3D's ads to go up on.
Some sites are very finicky.

Thanks! If we create new threads, we should go back and edit the older threads' title and provide a link to the latest.

5:21 PM
Either way (use old/create new) should work just fine.
Whatever we do, we should ensure the is used.
Get it posted on the front page.

I came to 3D Printing, via Arduino.SE, Raspberry Pi.SE and Electronics.SE, if that helps. Engineering.SE is probably a good one to. Maybe GraphicDesign.SE too? And Meta.SE.

Arduino/Raspberry Pi are great choices (IMHO) ... Electronics/Engineering seem to be stuck in the muds ... though, it doesn't hurt to try.
Graphic Design might be as well.
I think there's plenty of crossover between 3dP and a lot of sites ... unlike Mech.SE, lol!
The only site which IMHO is anywhere close to Mech is DIY ... and they'd have nothing to do with us, lol.

I liked your knotted green print, btw, @tbm0115. You should resize or reformat that image.

Anyway, when you create an ad, it should be slanted towards the site in question.

Ah, I see, it isn't as easy as I thought it would be.

5:25 PM
If it looks like it will fit with the site you are trying to get to advertise for you, they are more likely to accept the ad.
It also helps if you have several people from here who are on the other site and upvote the ads ... ;-)
The ad has to have six upvotes before it will start showing as an ad.
On a separate note, I just re-installed SolidWorks on my computer ... :o)

All of this information isn't in Zizouz212's post... how did you find out.

What version of SW?

Ah but that info is in Grace's post

It's the "student" edition. Since I'm a veteran, I can get it for $20 (USD) and is good for a year. Just cannot use it professionally, but that shouldn't stop me from using stuff for 3d prints.
@Greenonline - Yes, but I didn't see it in the one posted by Zizouz212 in Meta
@Greenonline - You can probably delete this comment

5:31 PM
@Greenonline the Grace Note posts are from a StackExchange bot I'm pretty sure, so I'd hope it'd be more informative :)

@tbm0115 - I hadn't thought of that, but you're probably spot on, lol.
(That it came from a bot.)

I've seen a bunch of "questions" posted by Grace Note and they're almost always pretty professionally written

It would be a huge amount of work to do them all individually ... I'm sure you're right. With a bot it's more like "fire and forget". Easy-peasy.

brb

Yes :) Easy-peasy is the way to go

6:04 PM
Education.SE may be another place we could advertise successfully.
External of the States, is "Artefacts" the correct way to spell it (in the title of the linked question) ... I believe we spell it "Artifacts" here ... (could be the difference between "tires" and "tyres" here in the States vs GB, so asking before I make a correction suggestion).

6:21 PM
I've been super pinged...
Which anything to stop me from having to debug android code right now haha

@StarWind0 - Heh!
Question: Can blender be used to create 3D "things" for prints?
Answer: Since Blender.SE has a ... I'd suggest it can.
There's ~210 questions on their site for 3d printing (at least under that tag). Another place we might be able to advertise.

6:36 PM
Blender can make models, I don't see why those cannot be turned into STL file formats.
Though I'm a solid works guy, blender had too many buttons so I never used it much
so that is a yes

7:31 PM
I saw something somewhere which seemed to imply there was a May something cutoff for putting ads in the Meta questions ... I believe I've confirmed there's only the vote cutoff for them and not time cutoff, except for the end-of-year when all heck breaks loose and all of the ads are reset.
@0scar @Greenonline @tbm0115 @StarWind0 - Another thing which really drives people into the site from other SE stacks is the HNQ (Hot Network Questions). If you see one which is on the HNQ, it should be voted up, answered, & commented on, all of which drive the HNQ score up, which means it moves up the list. This helps promote the site like nobody's business. There are also ways to "game" the HNQ system a bit as well, to get more questions on the HNQ. It's amazing what can happen.

7:55 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 HNQ, ok, sounds good :-)
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 - ah, artefacts vs artifacts.. OK, yeah, either US or UK spelling is left as it is. My mistake I didn't know artifacts was US. Learn something new every day :-)
Yeah, blender can, I've only ever used Blender. I've only made simple STL files though, but it is great software.
So, add SE.Blender and SE.Education to the list. I guess these should be added to a Meta question, I'll do that now, before I forget.
How about SE.Robotics? 3D Printers are robots, after all..

Not sure how we can get that many votes to get a hot question. Our votes per question are pretty low. I could ask coworkers to vote up one or something lol.
I post the group a lot in my facebook group 3d printing hobbyists that I moderate as well. Though most of those users have no idea what Stack overflow is

How about SE.Reverse Engineering? They seem to have a few 3D related questions...
I can't find SE.Education, or SE.Teaching in the list. What is its real name? Or a URL?
@StarWind0 - that's a good point, four is about the maximum number of votes that a question gets, in the immediate aftermath of being posted

8:18 PM
@StarWind0 It isn't only votes, but action on a question. Plus, some of them hit the HNQ just because ... I'm sure it's another SE bot thing. Action includes: votes, comments, views

8:29 PM
Sorry guys buy I'm pretty new with SE, I have to look up HNQ...

8:49 PM
@0scar - You don't know what the HNQ is (or don't know what the acronym means)?

9:06 PM
acronym is Hot Network Questions, have to look it up, link is welcome

If you go to the front page of any site, you'll see the HNQ listed on in the right column.
Should be about 1/2 way to near the bottom of the right side.

OK, just realized that it ispossibly the first page of the phone app...

Oh, won't see it on the phone app, I don't think ... sorry, never think in those terms

I always go directly to 3dprinting.stackexchange.com in browser

One second and I'll get you the link

9:13 PM
Yeah, @0scar, on the phone app they are listed in the "Feed" and marked with a hot icon (i.e the little flame with "hot" written next to it).

My basic thing about the HNQ is if a question is on the HNQ, do what you can to keep it there.
