Q: Private Beta Extended -- Still Going Strong

HedgeMageThe Community Team spent some time looking at Cryptography's Private Beta today, and we saw a lot of good things: Crypto has a good amount of meta activity (and you are very civil!), you are asking good, on-topic questions, and giving good answers. The Crypto.SE community seems to have a strong...

Is a good name for a tag?

@PaŭloEbermann There is some advice from Jeff that "meta" tags like that aren't a good idea

@nealmcb Here:

There are a few tags on Stack Overflow that have bugged me for a long time. Namely:

subjective best-practices beginner

best-practices beginner

beginner

But I could never quite articulate what, exactly, was wrong with these tags. It’s been bothering me more and more as time goes on. So much so, that about two months ago, I was compelled to ask on meta: Should we permanently remove the [subjective] tag?

There are some weak arguments in favor of keeping [subjective], but that’s about the best its proponents can muster. The arguments against it are much stronger. I felt Shog9 made the best case: …

I think the idea by the user of this tag here was to imply that he wants to know about algorithms in general, not specific ones.
So, remove this tag?

@PaŭloEbermann In that case "general" makes no sense to me, so I'd agree. My general sense is that Jeff has a useful argument. I don't know if there are good exceptions, or if they are just too problematic.

@nealmcb Done.

@Stephanie We need more questions, so go ahead :-)

I just added a tag wiki for , but we don't yet have any questions with this yet (I removed one which was about Mac OS). Does someone want to ask something about a MAC algorithm?

9:28 PM
@PaŭloEbermann There is a good classic question, which is: when encrypting and applying a MAC, should we apply the MAC on the cleartext or on the ciphertext ?
I will ask it and see what answers occur
(if none pleases me, I will put my own, too)

@ThomasPornin +1
