9!

:)

Dude... @Manishearth should get some kind of medal for this. 62 referrals and counting!
(my links just haven't been so well received, methinks...)

With any luck, it'll reach 100 and I'll get a gold badge to add to my collection :)
With a lot of luck, the gold badge will roll in by the end of today, making it 3 gold badges this week :P
@anorton You need to post in the right places :) Reddit doesn't seem to care about this (and SE doesn't care much for Redditors). HN folks are part SE haters part SE lovers, so we can net in a goodly amount of SE lovers from a link

Yeah...
By the way--your profile says you're an engineering student. What realm of engineering are you entering?
(or have entered?)

@anorton Engineering Physics. Which is basically pure physics with a sprinkle of nanotech/CMP/solid state physics on top
Just the way I like it
@anorton Also, ~15-20 of those are from internal referrals (institute robotics club mailing list/etc)

2:30 AM
Re: engineering physics: Woah. That sounds cool. :)
Re: Internal referrals: yeah... I need to get connected with other robot people... :)

I'm working for ASME SDC 2013, so I got a few connections. Yesterday we(some of my teammates, we didn't have enough funding for all of us to go) won the Asia-Pacific region, on to San Diego in a few months!

Congrats!

@Manishearth Awesome :)
@Manishearth Reddit does care about SE. Its got us around 15 people in definition and another 25-30 during commitment.

@AshRj Well, not as much. Also, Reddit hates SE. HN partly understands it (if someone says something about SE, someone else steps in to correct them; you don't have to do it)

2:41 AM
Do you mean that Reddit as an organization hates the SE org, or the people in Reddit hate the SE org?

@anorton Not the Org. The users.

That's what I thought, but wanted to be sure... :)

One of the founders of Reddit even came in a SE podcast I think
@Manishearth How much of a gap is there between Commitment completion and site launch ?

@AshRj ~ 3 days

Poll : Should we ask SE to hold off launch for a week? (So, that we can give some time at least for some of Anindo's contacts/people to sign up ) We could also try to get people here into the chatroom in the meantime.

2:47 AM
@AshRj I don't mind
sounds like a good idea

@John @anorton @AnindoGhosh ^^^

yeah that would be fine

@AshRj a note: once it's in private beta, Anindo can invite folks individually be email, but there won't be a universal way to break in
(no link to share)

@Manishearth Exactly why I am saying this.
Plus, its better to have representation from the start itself
Otherwise the RCE guys take over RE (Reference to Reverse Engineering )

RCE?

2:51 AM
Reverse Code Engineers
RE is a much wider field than that
But the majority of the site's users are RCEs, so its turned into a RCE.SE

We should try to avoid something like that here. We are aiming for a diverse user base, so lets start with the diverse user base.
@Manishearth Did you try to ask any1 to put up the chatroom link on announcements ?

I did, not sure if they heard me
The comm team member I pinged wasn't around at the time

@Manishearth Nobody from SE seems to be around on the weekends. Just us users running around ;-)

Yep
Currently it's in that time period when Shog9 is probably just going to bed and TimPost will take another hour to wake up

3:00 AM
They should have somebody from GMT +2 to +8 on the comm team. India alone makes up 10% of the user base on SO (which is just behind USA at 12% IIRC).

@AshRj TimPost is
more or less
he's in the Phillippines

@Manishearth Oh. Didnt know.

But yeah, before he was hired the time gap was an issue
anyway, got to go. Good food at home today :)

3:56 AM
congrats everyone

?
oh wow
didn't see that coming

4:22 AM
What just happened ?
We were 9 off an hour ago and no new people signed up

5:11 AM
Yeah, strange

Whats even stranger is that uptill page 10 all users have 200+ rep on one site = 10*10 which means we reached the number quite some time before this
:|

5:40 AM
Hm
If it helps, I triggered a rep recalc on a51 yesterday
Doubt it's related
@ash btw, a comm team member may drop by tomorrow. About the delay-beta thing

@Manishearth K.
We havent heard from AnindoGhosh on that.

@AshRj We do have pretty much 24 hour coverage during the week, but weekends are touch and go :)
@AshRj Are you going to be here around this time tomorrow? I'm being pulled in a few directions today, and I don't want to leave you hanging as I keep wandering away from the keyboard.

6:06 AM
@TimPost Have lectures most of the day tomorrow. Wont be able to come online till evening (IST).

6:20 AM
@AshRj That's fine, I'll be here - Please just ping me if you don't see me here.

6:49 AM
@AshRj Sent out a mail to my contacts, gave them the chat link. I specified that active SE members would be the ones finding things interesting at this time, the rest in a few weeks or so. Let's see what comes of it.

7:17 AM
Do you want to wait ? Or should we let the launch proceed (probably by mid-week) ?

@AshRj I just brought this up in the community team chat, but I think I'm the only one awake and here at the moment. I hope to get some input prior to talking about it tomorrow.
You guys have done an outright amazing job of organizing support for the proposal.
3

@TimPost Thank you :) I had started to lose hope towards the end of definition. But, things came back together, due to everyone's efforts.

7:35 AM
@AshRj How long beyond mid-week of this coming week would you want to hold back?
And approximately how many additional committers do you think would turn up?

@TimPost I am hoping for ~ 20-25 more.

That's definitely substantial if you think they'd be rather active contributors.

Only till Saturday.

And just to be clear, you feel that waiting for them and letting everyone begin at the same point would be the most beneficial thing to do?

@TimPost Going by my experience on Reverse Engineering, yes.

7:41 AM
Okay, I'll find out at some point Monday (should have some consensus by 2PM EDT, if not sooner)

One other thing, is it possible to add the chatroom link to the announcements ?
:8854428 Thats whats going on ^^. Are you not expecting a positive/significant response ?

@AshRj I

@AnindoGhosh ?

Sorry, my view was that I should not be a blocker to the launch, that I'd why I said to proceed. Regarding quality of those I bring in, they will mostly be very slow in engaging... These are people who travel a lot, and have little time for the. Net
Oh and my keyboard on the PC just died, I am now on the phone, hence many typos.

@AnindoGhosh The later they try to join in, the harder it will be. However, if they wont be active as you say, then it might not be worth the wait.

7:52 AM
They will be active, but not good ice breakers. These are not the type to be first in posting questions, they will wait till there are existing questions of their interest. You know the type.
So yeah, not good to wait at this stage. Pre commitment would have been good merely to get the numbers you wanted in.

@AnindoGhosh Yes, I understand that. Could you put a number though, how many do you expect ?

Over a month, 25

Alright, final consensus : No wait. Agreed ? @John @Manishearth @anorton

8:41 AM
I don't mind either way. Note that we can always invite via the "invite an expert" box. Some more time till beta may give us a much higher chance of success, but it depends on how we use it -- we probably could share it in some other Arduino communities.
I guess that waiting a few days for @Anindo's shares to come around won't hurt. @Anindo, do you think that there is any point doing this? (I don't know how you've shared the links)
Then again, private betas do take a couple of days to launch :)

@AshRj Sent out a mail to my contacts, gave them the chat link. I specified that active SE members would be the ones finding things interesting at this time, the rest in a few weeks or so. Let's see what comes of it.
@Manishearth Which community is left ? I have posted in all the G+ groups. We have done Arduino.cc. Nobody here is an active member of Adafruit or Maker or Spark..

If you think that the 25 or so additional people you may have coming would significantly improve the initial core of users that will jump in right away, it might make sense, especially if you're concerned that you may be lacking a bit. But, you'd need to be really sure, I wouldn't want to delay much if you have plenty of enthused people waiting to dig in.
What you want is for the automatic 'nag' to sweep in just a few stragglers, not half of your committed core.

9:12 AM
@ash I don't know, I thought Anindo had shared it to some expert/designer communities:s

9:27 AM
@Manishearth Hi... sorry I'd stepped out. No, my target community is artists / musicians who attend / have attended some electronic creativity events and workshops that I either participated in or led. These are mostly international travelers, who spend much of their time going from country to country, performing and participating in such events. Not the typical "Let me be the first to ask a question" segment.
Hence based on the discussions I'm seeing here, I would say that my mailer recipients would be more useful once things go live. Some might drop in to chat from time to time, but I am sure that causes no harm?

@anindo aight then, no waiting. You can send private beta invites later :)

@Manishearth Will do. Agreed.

We'll just wait for @john and @anorton to weigh in, they might have a different view or may have pending shares
(we can afford to wait that much, I don't think the site will launch till late Monday anyway)

4 hours later…
1:08 PM
Wow... I leave for the night, and exciting things happen! :)
I'm fine with either waiting or not waiting. It doesn't make too much of a difference to me, and anyone I would share to would be on an indiv. basis--I could do so by email.

1:31 PM
@Manishearth @AshRj, I'm in the same boat with @anorton. This is my first commitment to an A51 launch, I'd like whatever is best for the community

2:12 PM
So, No Wait is the consensus.
2

@AshRj Correct.
FYI: I'm about to leave for the morning, so don't expect responses for a while... :)

@TimPost Nobody thinks waiting is a good idea. So, we have no problem on going ahead with the launch as per SE schedule.

@AshRj Great :) I'll let everyone know.

@TimPost Sorry for any trouble you went through.

@AshRj Ah it's no trouble at all

4 hours later…
6:31 PM
Btw, @AshRj what should we do about this room when the site launches? I'm open to moving it over, but I think that the auto-created room will already be there. We can also move the messages. Or just link to this room and invite all major participants (anorton, John, Anindo, etc)

1 hour later…
7:48 PM
@Manishearth If a room merge is possible, that will enable reference lookup of the "early days" withough having to go hunt down a frozen room.

@AnindoGhosh a room merge just means that I punt all the messages here to the other one

@Manishearth Yes, that would work. By the way, classes nahi hain kya? It's pretty late.

1 message moved to Sandbox
in Sandbox, 42 secs ago, by Manishearth
Watch
^^that's what would happen

@Manishearth You mean all historical messages would show up as quoted messages? That's just plain ugly.

@AnindoGhosh 8:30 lectures tomorrow, but I'm not sleepy right now (afternoon). Doing some other work as well
@AnindoGhosh no
go to the sandbox room
They'd show up with a little arrow

7:51 PM
@Manishearth And there would be a "moved from" with yet another arrow, under each message?

@AnindoGhosh nope, under the bulk

@Manishearth Then I think it might be a good thing, but please let us wait till everyone else chimes in.
