@Brenton Horne: hello.

G'day.

I've got a half an hour spare time on my hands, let's get this problem fixed.

Thanks, so what's first up do ya need me to collect more information on the problem (which thing I wouldn't know how to but if you could tell me I might) or do ya have some theories?

Could you paste the output of apt-get install -f again?

Sure, one mo, it basically tries to install the package libreoffice-common but it then fails.

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  dolphin firebird2.5-common firebird2.5-common-doc kfind konqueror-nsplugins
  libfbclient2 libgoocanvas-common libgoocanvas3 libgsoap2
  libkonqsidebarplugin4a libmlt++3 libmlt-data libmlt5 melt python-mlt5
  python-pygoocanvas wine-gecko1.8
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following extra packages will be installed:

"trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/soffice', which is also in package openoffice.org-debian-menus"
That's interesting. LibreOffice and OpenOffice probably don't work well together, if you've tried to install both.
Try: sudo apt-get purge openoffice.org-debian-menus

OK, so what does that mean you want me to do? I did but I then removed them a week ago or so. Ah thanks

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libreoffice-core : Depends: libreoffice-common (> 1:3.6.2~rc2) but it is not going to be installed
libreoffice-ogltrans : Depends: libreoffice-common but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
Is the error I receive

sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-common libreoffice-core libreoffice-ogltrans libreoffice-base-core libreoffice-calc libreoffice-draw libreoffice-emailmerge libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-gtk libreoffice-impress libreoffice-math libreoffice-pdfimport libreoffice-presentation-minimizer libreoffice-presenter-console libreoffice-writer mythes-en-us python-uno openoffice.org-debian-menus
Try that.
It's the same command as the one in my answer, but with openoffice.org-debian-menus as well.

Thanks, I can't describe how much I appreciate this, mate (I'm Aussy)

Cool!
No problem.

Another error I'm afraid...

Package 'libreoffice-common' is not installed, so not removed
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:

Well, we'll just add those packages to the list.
sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-common libreoffice-core libreoffice-ogltrans libreoffice-base-core libreoffice-calc libreoffice-draw libreoffice-emailmerge libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-gtk libreoffice-impress libreoffice-math libreoffice-pdfimport libreoffice-presentation-minimizer libreoffice-presenter-console libreoffice-writer mythes-en-us python-uno openoffice.org-debian-menus libreoffice-help-en-gb libreoffice-help-en-us libreoffice-help-zh-cn
I think we could do sudo apt-get remove 'libreoffice.*' mythes-en-us python-uno openoffice.org-debian-menus as a shortened version, but I can't double-check right now.

235MB disk space will be freed... I have a good feeling about this, first time its gone so long without an error
It went through without an error!

Wahey!
OK, now try sudo apt-get install -f

Any ideas how I can check if everything is working now?
Thanks
basically told me to run sudo apt-get autoremove

Check the list of packages that it's asking you to autoremove first.
Let's try installing a package. SL is a good small funny one:
sudo apt-get install sl

Went through without a hitch.

8:36 PM
Sweet!
SL shows you a train when you type sl instead of ls by mistake.

Thanks, mate, thanks a million! Ah, OK. Rofl, that's an interesting program.

Can I have a look at the list of packages that autoremove suggests you autoremove?

  dolphin firebird2.5-common firebird2.5-common-doc kfind konqueror-nsplugins
  libfbclient2 libgoocanvas-common libgoocanvas3 libgsoap2
  libkonqsidebarplugin4a libmlt++3 libmlt-data libmlt5 melt python-mlt5
  python-pygoocanvas wine-gecko1.8

APT marks some packages as manually installed, and others not. The idea is that if you install Firefox, when uninstall Firefox, you probably don't want all of its dependencies any more.
Unfortunately, it doesn't always get it right, in my experience.
On that list, you probably still want to keep dolphin, kfind, and melt, especially if you remember installing those.
To mark a package as manually installed, just install it:
sudo apt-get install dolphin kfind melt
The rest you can probably remove, they're dependencies that aren't needed any more.
If you want to see what a package is, use apt-cache, like this:
apt-cache show dolphin

Up to that hitch I had found APT the best installation manager or w/e it's called better than just installing .exe files in Windows. I hated that system, it's tricky to remove programs through channels most people know only half the time is there a 'uninstall' option in the start menu
Oh thanks, that might come in handy

8:41 PM
I agree, APT is definitely better than Windows' system in theory, and usually in practise, but not always.
The trouble tends to start when people start installing start from outside the repositories, which they often have to because the repositories aren't comprehensive or up-to-date enough.
Any way, I need to go have supper now.
It's 8:42PM over here :P

Goodbye, ah it's 6:42am 'ere rofl.
Oh and when ya get back you might want to write the answer ya gave me up and I'll accept your answer and vote it up so ya get some reputation for it.
