Well hello there Bosoneando and gonenc and ACuriousMind: "If you wanted us to dish out some downvotes, you've accomplished that". Oh really? Is there anybody else who'd like to publicly engage in collusion re serial downvoting because Maxwell/Minkowski/Einstein/the evidence doesn't quite match what you've been taught?

Hi pal.
:-)

1:50 AM
@gonenc That was the first thing I thought of, but it's not that. We're around epoch 1.43 billion, I don't see how the 40983.xxxxx numbers can relate to that

Q: Thermal contact burn

Bill BornsteinMy client fell asleep in a bus stop leaning back against 3/16 in clear plate glass For an hour with a tee shirt on. What is the scientific method?
I have a friend who is really into theology. And she just doesn't seem to grasp that the wors science carries a very specific connotation involving loosely proposing an idea and testing it to verify it is correct.

5:47 AM
So I was wondering what exactly it is. Who's an expert on it?

5:57 AM
@StanShunpike Any student of science should be an 'expert' of at least the scientific method.

Q: Is this question appropriate for this forum?

Carlos BribiescasI'm trying to either: draw an analogy between quantum mechanics and real life or get to a point where I'm not able to create an analogy anymore and I give up. Odds are I'll be in the second boat :-). My background: I'm now a Software Engineer. My coursework was in Computational Mathematics. ...

6:34 AM
@StanShunpike people can't even agree on what the scientific method is

@DavidZ Really? But like....there's definitely like an underlying agreement of some sort. no?
How does stuff get done otherwise?

You don't need to know what the term "scientific method" means to do science
2

6:54 AM
@DavidZ I suppose that is true. I guess you need it to debate what science is.
I just never thought of it like that.
It's sort of natural
for me anyway

1 hour later…
8:08 AM
@skillpatrol nice video! Short and sweet
By the way, if you are a Raiders fan does that make you a Warriors fan?

Now that they're champions, sure :-)
just kidding

8:29 AM
@skillpatrol raiders fans in general seem to be a pretty hardcore bunch
Not sure why but it just seems that way

8:42 AM
@StanShunpike What @DavidZ probably meant in his second comment was that it's futile to get lost in terminology while through the very practice of science one knowingly or unknowingly constantly uses the scientific method.

9:01 AM
Well, but depending on what you consider to be "the scientific method", that may not actually be true. Real scientists often don't use the scientific method as it is typically taught in school, for instance.

9:35 AM
@StanShunpike it's just something in our gene pool :P

@JohnDuffield Can any of the mods (@DavidZ, @Qmechanic, @dmckee) tell if this and this and this and this and this are against the rules? Thanks

What rules is it supposed to be against?

@DavidZ He said that we are 'instigating downvotes'

uh, where did you quote that from?

@DavidZ Here

9:43 AM
I see
The posting of the chat messages is not against the rules about serial voting
Those rules only cover actual voting, not talking about it.

@DavidZ That was what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation!

That being said, posting a bunch of links with no explanation is not exactly model behavior.

@DavidZ Sorry. I will keep it in mind next time

I'm clearing some of the stars, too
no need to have one issue dominate the sidebar

Hey all!

9:54 AM
Hi pal

Howdy

@Danu did you see this? :p

(just before I leave for dinner)

How are you guys doing?
Wait, @DavidZ, I got something fun to share!

well I've got like a minute

@DavidZ Now we know for sure!

@DavidZ Right, could just be another ploy of the Martians.

10:01 AM
I know what that's going to be
Clicking it regardless
For anyone interested, the gif came from here (brought to my attention by @JamalS)
Have a nice meal @DavidZ
@ACuriousMind when are your exams going to happen? Mine start next week...

@Danu End of July
So in three to four weeks

Oh, okay
Upcoming 3 weeks are exam period for me
I'm done on the 23rd

My first exam is on the 22nd, if I'm not mistaken

Edward Witten?

Has anyone here played the Witcher 3? Based on some gameplay I just watched...I'm considering buying a game at retail price.

@0celo7 It's glorious

@ACuriousMind I know what I'm buying with my catsitting cash.
:D
Sooooo many games!!!
I still have to complete Infinite and then two other Bioshocks, not to mention Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout NV and Sleeping Dogs.
@ACuriousMind You should add me on Steam.
revolver_0celo7

@0celo7 How...surprising :D
@0celo7 Contrary to the name, Infinite is the shortest of the three

@ACuriousMind 0celo7 was taken.
@ACuriousMind I just killed the mother's ghost...how much longer?
I'm glad I got it on Steam sale. While it's good, no non-sandbox single player game is worth retail.
@ACuriousMind Is the DLC for the Witcher good?

1:00 PM
@0celo7 Uh...you're more than half way, but I can't exactly say how much came after that
@0celo7 I had played through it before most of the DLC appeared, so can't tell you :D

@ACuriousMind Do you think it will go on sale during the winter sale?
I'm not sure I want to shell out $85 if I can get it cheaper in a few months. I have plenty of other stuff to play until then.

@0celo7 I would think so

I've heard the map is multiple times the size of Skyrim.

If it goes on sale, also pick up the second part

Second part?
The Witcher 2?

1:04 PM
Yes

Argh, my new laptop's keyboard takes some getting used to.
What about the first one's director's cut?
Is there series lore that I'll miss by jumping into 3 first?

@0celo7 No idea how to compare these two, but it's definitely big, and the quests are far better than in Skyrim
@0celo7 Yes, the second is essentially the "prelude" to the third, story-wise

What's the game file size?
I have 300GB.

@0celo7 The first one is...not as polished as the other two, I would recommend against it
Also, its story is lagrely irrelevant for the rest

Huh, only 35GB.
How the hell is GTAV 65GB...
Oh wow, I think I barely meet the "recommended" system requirements :/
Huh, this here says I won't be able to run it at all...
@ACuriousMind Do you think it is very gfx intensive?

1:13 PM
@0celo7 Hell yes :D

Well this site tells me I can't run Skyrim.
I'm doing 1080p on high settings at 60fps.
Oh well, I might have to use Steam's return policy.
I only have 2 Steam friends. All alone...
@ACuriousMind oO how the heck do you have so many games...

@0celo7 I...buy them (mostly at sales)? :D

@ACuriousMind How much have you spent on games...?

@0celo7 No idea, honestly.

1:29 PM
@ACuriousMind have you heard the story about the single added sentence on Einstein's dissertation?

how many words was it?

No idea

Benjamin Franklin's head rolling on a wheelchair o0
This game...

@0celo7 Misinformation confirmed: I never even took a course on string theory :P
@skillpatrol ?

1:39 PM
@Danu Deflecting confirmed, not taking a course does not mean you don't think it's true.

...yet!
Also, I recently received a badge that I'm actually proud of: Taxonomist
Bet most of you don't have it! :D

I don't think I've ever created a tag

Exactly :)

Wow that dude with the lights on his head made me jump!
Creeping up on a man like that...not cool

My Witten gif is now at 4k views on imgur :D

1:50 PM
@Danu here
A Curious mind is not at all curious.

2:10 PM
@DavidZ My previous comment does not rely upon any particular definition of 'scientific method'. It just says that knowing what it means is not a prerequisite to learning science. Although knowing the common definition might help students make sense of what they study, they can succeed without knowing it before hand and shape their understanding of it on the way.

2:34 PM
The scientific method is a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry is commonly based on empirical or measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the scientific method as "a method or procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses." The scientific method is an...

@Bosoneando When you start trolling through a single user's activity you are wandering very near the line between judging content and judging the poster. If you are acting on those judgments, you are also at some risk of attracting the attention of the serial vote reverser.

Euler-Lagrange and $\mathrm{d}s^2=g_{\mu\nu}\mathrm{d}x^\mu\mathrm{d}x^\nu$ in BioShock Infinite.

I find myself wondering if this user thinks he's more likely to get help when he floods the site with lots of twisty little questions all alike?

@dmckee The user was advised (see comment thread) to split his original question into multiple questions

Ah. Fantastic.

@0celo7 Note the German for "equations of motion" above the E-L equations ;)

@ACuriousMind Yup

4:11 PM
What he or she needs is a mentor for these problems. Not a Q&A site because his problem is failing to gasp a whole bundle of related stuff at least partly because he isn't sufficiently tooled up for the math.

4:45 PM
@ACuriousMind I have no clue what's happening in this game.

I believe that is normal :D

IMO, understanding the game is not necessary for playing & completing it

What the hell does "I'm both" mean????
No spoilers pls

I'd think if someone were asked "Are you X or Y?" and someone thought that X and Y described them, then the answer "I'm both." is obvious

WHAT THE FUCK
IT ENDED
HOW THE HELL IS THAT AN ENDING

4:51 PM
Never having played the game, I'm not sure what you're talking about

@KyleKanos I'm quite confused as to what just happened.

I agree. I am confused as to what is going on about things you are experiencing

@0celo7 The ending does not really clarify things, imo - nevertheless, are you sure it ended?

@ACuriousMind Well, it sent me back to the main menu.

Ah. Well, then, it ended :D

4:54 PM
I'm watching an "analysis" of the ending now.

I was trying to VTC a post yesterday which had one of those enumerated lists of sort-of-related-but-all-a-little-vague questions, and noticed that the help center never actually expresses an opinion on whether or not those posts are ok.
It was more or less clear what the author was asking.
I would think we prefer more focused questions. What do you all think? Do we need a help center update? Maybe a little meta discussion?

Wouldn't that be "too broad"?
On the closed questions help page, it does describe too broad as if your question could be answered by an entire book, or has many valid answers, it's probably too broad for our format

This one was more like "Why is the sky blue, the sun yellow, and the trees green?"

And on the don't ask page, it does say Your questions should be reasonably scoped. If you can imagine an entire book that answers your question, you’re asking too much

I think it's clear that those should be three different questions unless OP describes something to bind them.

5:03 PM
@DanielSank Sky being blue has been covered before and the sun's not yellow, it is white (and I think has been covered as well)

@KyleKanos Come on, dude.
That was an example.

Oh, that wasn't actually the question...

The actual topic was Van Hove singularities, but I didn't want to assume you knew what that is.

I take about 95% of things at face value

@KyleKanos Do you have that hotkeyed?
'cuz that was fast.

5:05 PM
@DanielSank no, but I recall my phrase so I searched it

@KyleKanos Nice.

Well the guy posted his three questions separately, no?

@KyleKanos I just noticed that the asker has broken up the post into several more focused ones, which is great! I'm just wondering if we have a reference for this pattern so users don't think I'm making stuff up.

Q: Can I ask several related questions in a single thread?

Mark EichenlaubI have several physics questions, all of which are about the sloshing mode of water. Should I ask all the questions in a single thread, or create separate threads?

Hmm, ok, at least that meta post has been FAQ'd.
That should be upgraded to a statement in the help center.
@DavidZ.

5:08 PM
I was just going to say we've got two mods here, we could axe them 'bout it

Axe them, eh?
I thought it was "aks them".
Oh, while I have your attention, @KyleKanos, I am starting a petition to ban the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. If you'd like to never see a post asking "WTF the Heisenberg uncertainty principle", please sign on the dotted line.

I'm pretty sure Leela used "axe" in the Fry-became-his-grandpa episode

@KyleKanos Sounds right.

I've been considering signing the petition, but any time I move my pen I can't find it

@KyleKanos Is there a standard internet picture for jokes that make one cringe?

5:13 PM
I thought that's what the facepalm was for?
Truthfully, I was laughing out loud as I wrote and sent that message

@KyleKanos Amusing one's self is all that matters. Good on you.

youtube.com/watch?v=MhjKW1S1xvk does a pretty good job of explaining the ending, I think.

Pfft. Spoiler warnings
Is that really even needed?

@KyleKanos Probably.

They're talking about the end of the game, of course there will be a discussion on the story of the game

5:20 PM
oh
I thought you meant is the explanation necessary

So of course there will be "spoilers"
If I made videos like that, I'd not include a spoiler warning

The explanation is necessary, if only to confirm my own observations.

And if anyone complains about the lack thereof, I'd respond with something along the lines of, "Well then don't watch it."

@KyleKanos Mini-rant?

I just think the "necessity" to put spoiler warnings on just about everything is a bit over-the-top.

5:28 PM
Well, now that that's done, time to start BioShock 1.

5:41 PM
Whoa, this game started crazy!

Just...what the hell does this guy want to accomplish by posting that?

I didn't realize Einstein had a TOE

And...it's closed. That was fast!

Not a record though

@0celo7 I'm kinda sad right now because I turned 18 last month and I've basically played most 18+ popular games and there's nothing special about being 18 and playing them legally. :/

5:53 PM
@Gaurav 18+? You crazy euros.
Everyone knows 17+ is the right age.

Wait...there's actual laws against playing an 18+ game before you're 18?

@0celo7 I believe India is not in Europa :P

@KyleKanos Like I said...crazy euros.
@ACuriousMind uh
Whoops!

@KyleKanos Yes, rules at home.

@ACuriousMind You misspelled "euroland".

5:54 PM
@Gaurav That's quite ridiculous
But each government has their say

Kidding, it's just that there's nothing new about being 18. I've played GOW when I was like 15, there's nothing to top that at adult content, is there ?

@Gaurav GTA 5 is pretty bad. I'm sure there are worse games, check Germany's ban list.

@0celo7 GTA is ain't that raw

@Gaurav There's more to "adult content" than blood and gore.
Screwing hookers, shooting pedestrians and torturing a dude all contribute.
This is a list of video games that had been censored or banned by governments of various states in the world. Governments have been criticized for banning games for many reasons, including, but not limited to; bans that increase piracy, inhibit business opportunities, violate rights, and are widely available for purchase or download. 6:01 PM
oooh, Manhunt is supposed to be really bad.

Duke Nukem

Banned for "gross, unrelenting, and gratuitous violence."

space bar, space bar, space bar, space bar, space bar, control!

@KyleKanos Is that a reference to that series? I've not played it.

@0celo7 The 'more' part is what I'm talking about. I think GTA almost ties with GOW there.

6:02 PM
@ACuriousMind Lol, is BioShock 1 any less confusing that Infinite?

@0celo7 Indeed a reference. You used space bar to pay the strippers in the game to remove their tops and control to shoot your gun.

@KyleKanos Gun or gun?

@0celo7 I think so, yes. Perhaps not initially

@0celo7 The actual gun.

GOW is more derogatory toward a particular sex.
@KyleKanos In GTA, they hide many of the parts, in GOW it's all open.

6:07 PM
@ACuriousMind This review of Witcher 3 says the main quest is kinda lame. Agree?

@0celo7 No, I don't

"Fetch quest heavy main story."
Just looking at this gameplay on YouTube, I'd be very surprised if I can run it well.
@ACuriousMind You said to get this first, right?

@0celo7 It definitely helps, lore/story-wise, and is also a good game, so yeah

Okay...that comment thread I posted above from Sheldon is just weird

Kuwait banned Injustice Gods Among Us because of the plural of the word God appearing in the title.

6:17 PM
@ACuriousMind But not the first one?

@0celo7 Its story is not so closely related, and it's not as good a game as the other two, so I'd not really recommend it (but I'm also not saying you shouldn't play it :P)

@ACuriousMind I see you've been playing Skyrim. Am I to blame?

@0celo7 Partly, yes :D

Did you get the 2K texture pack?

I stopped now because I couldn't stand my computer heating up my room even further

6:25 PM
Germany confirmed for 3rd world.
Is Skyrim that GPU intensive?

@0celo7 Not yet, my roommate was hogging the connection.

3rd world problem suck. Sorry, man.

@0celo7 Intensive enough to produce noticeable warmth emanating from the tower

@dmckee Does seem that way
On the subject of the "times" I had from the previous day: int(Timestamp*10) >> 15 gives me 12 for all possible values of range and int(Timestamp*100) >> 20 gives me 3 for al possible values (these are the year & month I expect respectively)

@DanielSank I don't think we can edit that part of the help center, but remind me another day to check on it. Or another mod can look into it.

@ACuriousMind I can only imagine the sweet look on your face when you figured out BioShock Infinite's plot rests on many worlds quantum mechanics.
@ACuriousMind Great minds do the same dumb stuff...?

This guy's conspiracy theory seems to know no bounds :/

@ACuriousMind I'm watching the IGN review for Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition, which is the one on Steam...they say that the UI was redesigned for consoles. This true?

6:49 PM
@0celo7 I was ecstatic, as you might imagine
@0celo7 Never played the unenhanced version, but yeah, the UI in both The Witcher 2 and 3 is console-y

Those damn peasants

@KyleKanos " "good-standing" people"? WTF is he talking about?

@ACuriousMind He usually means good-standing people to mean new users
But that doesn't seem to be the case here

I think he seems to think there are users held "in good standing" by the mods whose reports on suspicuous activity form the basis of most mod actions
Which...is not how it works :D
