Oh cool. I answered a question SO earlier about a compiler optimization. But I wasn't able to it's validity mathematically.

Basically, Floor(1431655766 n / 2^32) = Floor(n/3).

For 0 <= n < 2^31

I'm actually trying to prove it in a more general case, but my epsilon approach for dealing with the floor functions failed miserably. It wasn't tight enough to actually complete the proof.

Multiplying by 3, 1431655766*3 m / 2^32 >= 3n > m, and subtracting by m, we get m/2147483648 >= 3n-m > 0. The right hand side is a positive integer, so it's at least 1; hence, there are no counterexamples for m < 2147483648 = 2^31.

My proof fails in that case because 3n-m is no longer an integer, so you can't bound it below by 1.

The general case that I'm trying to prove is a bit more complicated. I'll probably attempt it over the weekend.

Prove:
Floor(N / D) = Floor(N * (R + 1) / base)

Everything is integer. base is a power of two (though I doubt that matters)

Basically, there's 3 floors involved. My epsilon approach failed miserably because I had 3 epsilons. 2 are known to be [0, 1). And that wasn't enough to bound the 3rd one to [0, 1).

I was assuming worst case from the floor function errors and that wasn't tight enough.

Powers of 2 is pretty relevant here. My proof is essentially based on the binary expansions of the two numbers.

You can probably prove it just by looking at binary expansions (if your version is true, which I haven't thought about so I'm not sure)

I have a feeling it might fail if D divides evenly into base because of the +1. But that's a corner case that will never be hit in practice.

Since if that was the case, the compiler would use a single right-shift operation rather than this whole mess of multiply and shift.
