i really nee to get a pair of tiny tweezers to get the hair out of my R.A.T9 Mouse
don't ask me how any of it got in there in the first place because i don't know

just disassemble it and clean, it should be easy and it would make the result much better
hair gets in mice easy if you have cats or have haircuts at your table or don't blow away all the cut hair after going to a salon
seriously there are far more unusual things in life

@Hakase no can do, i see no screws that i can undo. the screws i do see are kinda like Nintendo's which you can actually by a tool to unscrew them
@Hakase this mouse is my work mouse and it's started getting hair into it at my last job. i don't cut my hair at work and when i do get my hair done it's at home and i take a shower right away
i always get a crew cut

12:19 AM
Have you got any pets or anything that could've shed hairs into it?

@Matt yes but they are not at work.....also i wear a different set of clothes when i handle them. on a hot day wet dog smell is not a good smell

@ton.yeung It's pointless for programming. Even at 28 in., 4k at default scaling is so small that I need to squint. And if you're gonna increase the scaling, you might as well use a smaller resolution. 4k IMO, is really only good for graphics.
I'm using 27 in. 1440p's right now. And it took some time to adjust to that. I guess if I tried hard enough, I might be able to do 4k @ 28 in. (default scaling) But I'm not gonna try to stress-test my eyes like I do to my computers.
I can't speak for that since I've never gamed on 4k. I haven't used 4k outside of the displays at Frys/Microcenter. But those are good enough for me to test scaling for programming purposes.
But 1440p Crysis looks pretty nice.

New weird anime(ish) merchandise: Princess Suwa shovel
As much as I appreciate the idea and like that moe is entering more parts of everyday life, I don't think I'll be buying this one. Too expensive and no real use for me.

@LoganM i'd also question how long the artwork will last if it was used

12:32 AM
Well, you do get 2 shovels and an ice scraper, so you don't need to use the designed one

@LoganM depends, the second shovel is curved so no good at digging strait surfaces. the curved one is more suited for digging out from piles

looks like they're both curved to me
in any case, it is supposed to be an emergency kit

1:28 AM
@Memor-X they're usually behind rubber pads on the bottom but save yourself this guessing and just google how to clean it
@ton you can always change font size in code editor, no matter the screen size and res
you could go half res if you don't like smoothed fonts
the martian is a nice movie
matt damon woo!

1:51 AM
change DPI in windows' screen settings
you can use custom values
blogs.msdn.com/cfs-filesystemfile.ashx/__key/… … idk this doesn't look real but it should work
baltimoresun.com/health/bs-hs-aids-vaccine-20151007-story.html I wonder if this is meaningful or just another "we made some progress as usual, but nothing really useful is gonna come out of it anytime soon so relax" news

@LoganM is there a diffence between the Himiya Shrines and the nearby shrines of other names like Hiratoko, Nonaka, Haguro and Hachiman (which there is also one north of Nakajima Island)

@Hakase Drug testing generally takes many years (even decades) before it's approved for general use. I wouldn't expect anything too soon.
@Memor-X I don't know what kind of difference in particular you're asking about

2:08 AM
@LoganM well then why is there 3 Himiya Shrines around the area of Suzu i linked to when there's a bunch of other shrines by different names. also why are there 2 Hachiman's so far apart?

also I feel like you've asked me the same question before and I didn't know then either
@Memor-X I don't really understand what you're asking.
Why are potatoes grown in Ireland and in Idaho when those two places are far away from each other?

@LoganM i'm asking why there are 3 shrines named the same when there a bunch of other shrines within the same area have different names
or is it just google confusing me

@Memor-X I'm asking why there are vegetables named the same when there are a bunch of other differently named vegetables in the same area.
@ton.yeung no, you got it backwards. The irish potato famine was caused by a disease in potatoes. They were already widespread in use before then, and that's partly what made the famine particularly bad.

@LoganM because they are different vegetables...or are you saying that these 3 Himiya Shrines are for the same purpose compared to the other shrines by different names

Do the 3 Himiya shrines have the same name?
I can't tell because you're writing in English
was there a lot of cg in noragami?

2:18 AM
@LoganM yes they do, they all have the same kanji while the other shrines don't

oh I probably didn't watch during the fight scenes

i would copied the kanji for you in the first place had i been able to

I still don't quite understand what you find so unusual about this

@Memor-X 火宮神社

2:20 AM
@LoganM well by my understanding shrines tend to have different names because different gods are supposed to reside there

火宮 literally just means something like "fire shrine" and 神社 is the general name for all shinto shrines.

@LoganM google translate just says Himiya shrine, no much help

Given that I don't live in or anywhere near Ishikawa prefecture, I don't really know anything more about it, and you can presumably look things up as easily as I can.

Q: How deep do the parallels with "The Lady who Loved Insects" run?

senshinEpisode 1 of Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru is titled 「骨愛ずる姫君」, translated by Crunchyroll as "The Princess who Loves Bones". To the Japanese reader, this is clearly derivative of 「虫愛ずる姫君」 "The Lady who Loved Insects", an apparently famous narrative from the Tsutsumi Chūnagon M...

@ton.yeung looking at wikipedia "Inari Shrine" seems to be used to group them but the shrines themselves have their own names

2:25 AM
@ton.yeung I guess you probably mean 屋, which just means "shop" or "person who sells things"

himiya doesn't even have a ya in it. It has 宮 which is miya.
It's entirely possible those 3 shrines are all connected and owned by the same people, or were at one point. I don't know everything about every shrine in Suzu, Ishikawa prefecture.

@LoganM so 火 is supposed to be "ka" like in kayōbi (火曜日) not "hi"

カ (ka) is the onyomi. ひ (hi) is one of the kun-yomi

@LoganM well i was trying to get some clarification on why there are 3 of the same. in my notes i have Seikou VS Team Takamachi at TALON Node Location Himiya Shrine and only just noticed that there are 3 in the same area. i like to try and keep my information as accurate when i deal with already established locations
@LoganM ok....then why did you say "himiya doesn't even have a ya in it. It has 宮 which is miya." but miya does have a ya

2:38 AM
@Memor-X If 宮 is miya how would you propose to write just ya?

@LoganM みや
isn't that how people understand how a kanji is pronounced?

I think you're either missing some extremely obvious context of my message, or you've got a very big misunderstanding about how Japanese works

like how "@" we know is "at" and "15" is "fifteen"

Yes, 15 is "fifteen", but you can't just split off the 1 and have it read as "fift"
Likewise, while 宮 is read as みや, you can't just chop the kanji in half to get just や

@LoganM ahhhh ok then i must have misunderstood your original statement of there being no ya

2:44 AM
what I was saying is that no kanji in 火宮神社 is read as や

@LoganM an idication of how stupid my primary school teachers were. with say 15 you can split it but teen = 1 and fif = 5. likewise with 35, 3 = thiry and 5 = five

I wouldn't blame that on your primary school teachers so much as the English language itself

@LoganM ok then, why do you single out the ya in himiya? wouldn't the same statement work with mi as well?

because he was asking about ya

@LoganM oh ok, i missed that post
@ton.yeung don't worry about it. in the process i learned about onyomi and kunyomi

2:50 AM
meh you can still read things even if you don't know how to pronounce them
it can get a bit annoying, but it's something you can get around

@LoganM i find that hard even in english because it like reading "Notice how $GLOBALS _____ in any scope, this is ______ $GLOBALS is a superglobal. Here's an _____ ______ the power of superglobals:"

It's impossible in English because you can't guess the meaning of a word from how it's written
@ton.yeung If you know Chinese that helps a lot with on'yomi. I've been meaning to start learning Chinese some day to help my Japanese, but it's hard to find the time.

That probably won't help much. You need to know about 2000 characters to have the equivalent of a high school graduate's level of knowledge
Speaking of which, I took a look at some of the stuff you need to know to pass kanji kentei level 1 (6355 kanji, with all readings including some very uncommon ones). It's pretty crazy. I don't think I'd seen half the kanji before, and of the ones I'd seen, I could only answer a few questions.
no, it's entirely in Japanese

3:10 AM
@ton.yeung Here's a sample Kentei Lvl 1 test: kanken.or.jp/kanken/outline/data/…

@ʞɹɐzǝɹ is that like and end of semester/year examination? or just a regular test

FWIW the average Japanese person probably can't answer more than a couple questions either

@Memor-X nippon.com/en/nipponblog/m00048 read this for context

I don't think so
I'd assume they probably use JLPT or something for that
Kanji Kentei level 1 is primarily intended for language scholars, and only a few hundred people pass it each time it's offered. Most of what's on the test is useless for everyday Japanese.

@ʞɹɐzǝɹ ahhh, certification. and the levels are in reverse, basic level is 10 and expert is level 1

3:15 AM
@ton.yeung Kanji kentei requires not only being able to recognize kanji but to know them thoroughly, probably on average 5 compounds per character. so even if you can pass JLPT 2 (1000 kanji), you can't necessarily pass kanken 6 (600 kanji)

Well, it's not really any harder for gaijin than native speakers tbh. The stuff is esoteric enough that even a native speaker won't be able to pass without extensive study.
FWIW the overall pass rate is about 15%.

kentei level 4 would probably be a rough equivalent to JLPT 1 imo

3:30 AM
@ton.yeung There's always the XPS 15...
yeah
@ton.yeung there's not a big market for them in stores atm

3:56 AM
the samsung panels look pretty nice from what I've seen
I think it was a Sager NP8651

4:17 AM
I'm still having trouble finding a laptop with the following (minimum) specs:
1. Skylake Core i7
2. 32 GB Ram
3. 250GB SSD + 1 TB HD
4. Graphics good enough for basic gaming
5. 15 - 17in. 1080p
6. Won't overheat under heavy load.
#2, 3, and 6 are the hardest to find - let alone together.

@Mysticial Something about sense not being made.
5

lol

What is the point of having such powerful laptop?

For the same reasons my desktops are on the higher end.

But the laptop will never compete with your desktop in any way
so you cannot run you pi program there...

4:21 AM
I'm not asking for 8 cores and 64GB ram with quad-SLI. Just a mobile workstation.
@hwlau Actually I can and I do.
Compiling is actually almost as big of a problem.
Since it takes many GBs of ram to compile the larger things.

i mean it can't break the record in your desktop

It's impossible on my current laptop which has 8GB.
I'm not trying to break records on a laptop.

you mean compile?

Actually, I don't break records myself anymore. I just let people with the big computers do it for me.

4:24 AM
Believe it or not, it actually takes 10 GB of ram to compile my Pi program. That can be reduced if I build all the binaries sequentially. But then it'll take an hour.

How come you use so much memory?
It takes ~10GB to compile gcc, but in parallel

If I try building all 3 versions at once (release, private beta, and dev), it goes over 30GB. (the dev builds are significantly bigger)

how much computation time does it actually take?

ok, so you have double cores count, you need double memory

Each "individual" binary needs about 1 - 2GB to build. (taking about 3 - 15 min. each) There are multiple binaries targeting different processors. Right now:
- The public version has 6 binaries.
- The private beta has 8 binaries.
- The develop build has 11 binaries. And they are 50% larger since they include the unit tests and benchmarks.
It gets a little worse each time I upgrade the compilers. And it also got worse when I started doing more and more template meta programming. (but benefits of that greatly outweigh the drawback of compile time/resources)

4:31 AM
wow, apparently all the recent records are done on home computers in under a year

It makes sense now, you use lots of template meta programming, so it eats up lots of memory. It would surprise me if you have the same size of codebase of gcc

That's not much at all in the grand scheme of things. For some things I've worked on, our totals were in the millions of cpu hours.

@hwlau It's only 280k LOC atm.

@Mysticial Pretty good for a personal projects

@ton.yeung Are they out yet?
@hwlau It's been going on since 2008. That's a long time.
ooooh
The LOC has been going up and down in the last few years. The transition to C++ and then the use of TMP has greatly cut down the amount of code.
@ton.yeung I can do that.
Wonder how much it will be though.
Damn...
ADC?
accidental damage

Q: Why is Roa's appearance in the Hisui route different from that in "Near Side of the Moon"?

MaroonIn the Arcueid and Ciel routes, Roa appears with long black hair in "Western" clothes. However, I'm currently playing the Hisui route, and I've seen that the original Shiki Tohno appears in Japanese clothing with short white hair at the very end. (For what it's worth, the adopted Shiki in this...

It's pretty expensive already. So I'm gonna skimp as much as possible on the software.
3k is not a small amount.
My current desktop was 3k. But that's with double the cores and double the memory.
I guess if I include my monitors, it's over 5k. But that's a separate story. I spend 4+ hours a day in front of it. So it's worth spending more for my main setup.
The laptop will be for traveling and off-loading overnight tasks that I don't want to run on my desktop.
I'm specifically interested in offloading all my unit testing to the laptop since they take hours to run. And my other 4770K has REALLY loud fans.
I do not intend to overclock a laptop.
Especially if I'm gonna be running AVX2 on it.

O hi yo/

That's not bad at all.
And it will probably game better than my desktop.
lol
cause I'm running a 750Ti - with 4 x 1440p monitors.
I don't plan on running disk-intensive stuff.
It'll be all ram drive.
I do that right now with my desktop.
I'm not in a hurry atm.
But I'm getting something before Thanksgiving since that's when I'm traveling.

4:56 AM
!!urban hadena

@SeptianPrimadewa No definition found for hadena

5:23 AM
@SeptianPrimadewa maybe define it for her?

@SeptianPrimadewa Japanese adjective meaning "gaudy" or "loud", or an especially terrible fansub group

!!define gaudy

@Memor-X gaudy very showy or ornamented, now especially when excessive, or in a tasteless or vulgar manner

@LoganM ^ would fit the description of a terrible fansub group wouldn't it?

1 hour later…
Gao

Because I didn't know why I'd want to open it, what would I do with it without anyone to talk to?
If it's like whatsapp, you'd need to add people

Q: How do you use ”~じゃんよ。” and what exactly does it mean?

Candice MillerAt the end of sentences in casual form I know you can use ~じゃない or ~じゃん to say "~isn't it?" similar to ~ね. And I know ~よ at the end of a sentence can be used like "I tell you" or for emphasis, but what happens when you use ~じゃんよ at the end of a sentence, like in the titles of Space Dandy episodes...

@AsadaShino add me
mirroroftruth :D
profile pic is inori

Added, I think?
If that's you xD
Otherwise I just added a random guy
