@ton.yeung Did I miss a call from you?

1:38 AM
Good morning ~

@romcom_god good afternoon

@romcom_god Good evening.

Europe and US ? LoL

morning, Asian here

@OshinoShinobu I'm Asian too :)

1:46 AM
oh hi fellow Asian :D

Hey, I'm Asian!

@OshinoShinobu Hi and good morning :)

@Yuuki But you said good evening, are we that far apart?
or just trolling.

@romcom_god Asian not in Asia.

1:51 AM
@Yuuki - oh, sorry about that - haha

@Yuuki just realize you're from Gaming SE, don't you have Anime SE account?

@OshinoShinobu Nope.
I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as most peeps here and I don't really have any questions.

@Yuuki That's weird, you're almost always here whenever I drop by.

ah... no wonder I never saw you there

Aa, so that's why.

2:02 AM
I'm not really knowledgeable my self, some of my answer depend on google..

@Yuuki has something happened on Arqade?

@Memor-X Not that I know of?
Why?

@Yuuki this has been upvotred twice and before it was removed this
normally stuff like that gets downvoted quite quickly

@Memor-X Probably a slow day?

lol dat shog9 comments

2:05 AM
People not really paying attention and then bad stuff slips by?

Upvotes are almost definitely because of sockpuppets.

sockpuppets.....wait, has winterbash started?
it would explain the stupidity

not yet
(approx 3 days)

hmm, then it seems to be unmotivated stupidity then

I don't know how this user has the association bonus.
NVM serial voting on Astronomy seem to be the cause. Was reversed but not before hitting association bonus level.
@ton.yeung Not sure what you mean by that.
My question is "what do you mean by old?". For me, old means that a clock moving with the star would measure a lot of passage of time. In that case, such a star would be relatively young compared to ones which aren't moving relative to us.
yes, of course.

@ton.yeung On...?
@ton.yeung Anxieties are high, but that's normal.

I'm a little late but: What is winterbash?

@ton.yeung Human interaction in general, whether or not I'd be good at this, why don't I know all the initialisms...
Stuff like that.

@ton.yeung Yes, though you have to specify what you mean by a measurement on that star at the same time. It's not a meaningful concept, unless that star happens to be close to us so that we can communicate with them.

2:20 AM
I would actually be worried if I got back from any sort of human interaction and my heart rate was normal and I didn't have the slightest feeling of wanting to vomit.
@ton.yeung Like the one about software development lifecycles.

@ton.yeung really?

I've done similar stuff, my first job used Kanban (although I didn't really participate that much), and I've gone over Agile in my classes.
I just didn't know the term SDLC and stuff.

@romcom_god Hats, which @LoganM is king/queen (dam, can't get the link)

lol Kanban
Well I guess it's pretty good if you don't have ms project or something else

Abby T. Miller on December 15, 2013

The gatherings of family and friends, the giving and receiving of gifts, the making and/or breaking of New Year’s resolutions – however you and yours celebrate, the end of a calendar year heralds many traditions.

Here at Stack Exchange, we wanted to get each of you an awesome, personal gift, and mail it to you as our way of saying “thanks.” But our accountant pointed out that there are 4.5 million of you, which promptly reminded us that the holidays aren’t about gifts. The real spirit of the holidays can only be captured with… …

is this the one?

2:23 AM
Yes, that's it
I won that one

Oh cool :)

Oshiiiet it's hat time

Abby T. Miller on January 03, 2014

Another holiday season has drawn to a close. We’ve had three glorious weeks with our beloved hats. Now as we pack away the tinsel and the party horns, it’s time to put the hats back in their boxes for another year. Before we move on to 2014 with our bare heads (and our full hearts), let’s take a few moments to reminisce.

76,586 users from all over the network earned 214,172 hats this year – that’s just about twice the number of hats they earned last year. 95 sites opted to participate in Winter Bash, which is more than the total number of sites that simply existed during last year’s event. …

@Frosteeze Still 3 days till hats.

@LoganM @romcom_god that was kinda what i was looking for, there was a proper leader board which has Logan winning by 1 hat

Dangit

2:24 AM
So it's like badges that appear on avatars?

I'm hoping to have everything done with my TA work by then so that I can get an early lead on hats.

@LoganM you're a mod this year arn't you?
@ton.yeung don't start that again

@ton.yeung Yes, the frequency will be doppler shifted
@Memor-X yes so I should get that hat

@Memor-X - nice! did you get a lot of hats last year?

not as many as I did

2:30 AM
@romcom_god nope, just a handful and even then i only kept one on most of the time

@LoganM - hahaha, are the triggers for the hats random and secret?

Some are secret to normal users. None are secret to me.

@LoganM why, you have insider info or are you assuming the hats will be the same this year

I just want one hat this year ;_;

@Memor-X I've never met a hat which could withhold its secrets from me.

2:31 AM
So yeah, I have a shift at 5:30p tomorrow so I can't meet up with you guys, @ton.yeung @ʞɹɐzǝɹ.

@LoganM You'd never get IKlsr
i'd ping him but I think he works or something

I don't think the SEx gods would repeat the hats from last year or it would be too easy for old members.
Then again, who says they can't?

Some hats get repeated, but most aren't.
...wat
hai

@ton.yeung I think so.
IIRC, to an object traveling at the speed of light, everything appear unmoving (if it could actually see anything).

Things can't travel at the speed of light.
(unless they are massless, in which case they must travel at the speed of light)

2:35 AM

@ton.yeung Would be like pseudo-teleportation wouldnt it?
i mean light is able to move

when a person unintentionally reminds you that you're a foreveralone...

@romcom_god You have your waifu dont you?

@romcom_god until magic is release

@Frosteeze - LoL, geez I'm 19!
Whahaha

2:41 AM
@romcom_god woosh
I think.
@Taisho Huh. I thought this character looked familiar. I guess not.

@Yuuki Reminds me of Rin

@Yuuki yeah woosh - I had my bday last 7.

@Memor-X From...?

@Yuuki Vocaloid

@Yuuki vocaloid
ah damnit im always slow

2:42 AM
It's Edna from Tales of Zestiria

PSA: Whenever you name a character, always name him/her/it/xem as "<character> from <franchise>".

@romcom_god 11 more year until you may become a wizard

She does kinda look like Rin I guess though.

@Memor-X You can be a magical girl before that though so

@Memor-X - hahaha, I'm not looking forward to it.

2:43 AM
@LoganM i'm waiting for the announcement of when it'll be localized
@Frosteeze how?

@Memor-X Just get Japanese version

@LoganM DLC Problems

@Frosteeze soo?

@Memor-X Find a contracting agency.

@Memor-X Gotta make a wish with Kyubey nods
@romcom_god Get your waifu faster, see, just like Homura

2:46 AM
@Frosteeze ; I'd rather wait, I think.

@Frosteeze you do realized she had to wait a fair while

@Memor-X Still faster than 11 years :P
Well...maybe not since there's a lot of time loops

Q: Need help identifying school anime

CluclucSorry for vague question. All I remember is: School anime Pretty sure not harem Funny Centers on small group of students, both male and female, maybe a club. Normal, yellow and white, sweater and tee style uniforms. Short, blonde female character, flat chested. Not a boobilicious anime. Not a c...

3:02 AM
@Sakamoto @Yuuki You could have guessed this

Wow.
The day has come.

3:55 AM
The graph you have isn't asymptotic to the speed of light, it actually reaches the speed of light in finite time.
So no, that couldn't be the velocity of a real particle as a function of time.
Whether or not the axes are flipped, it's not valid.
still doesn't work.
Okay, describe it right then.
What do you mean by that?

So x is what the observer's clock measures?
Who is measuring time and who is measuring velocity?
Until you specify that, your question is meaningless in light of relativity. Once you do, it probably is answerable.

@ton.yeung What brought this on, by the way?

okay, sure
Okay, sure. So the person is measuring both time and velocity of the pulsar.
okay, sure
So they aren't moving relative to each other?
If they are not moving relative to each other, they'll measure time and velocity the same.
So the person starts accelerating?
Okay
Well, they could come to rest.
Sure, why not.
Incidentally, what do we mean by "at rest"?
@ton.yeung Relative to what?
Because there velocity is 0 relative to the pulsar at the beginning.
Anyway, it's not particularly hard to find things which aren't moving. If you're sitting in a chair, your chair is not moving very much relative to you. That's true whether the chair is in your house or your car or a spaceship.
Of course, if you look at that chair in a different frame, it may appear to be moving quite quickly.
@ton.yeung But now you're looking at it in a different frame, specifically, the comoving frame of the universe. Which is very different from your frame of reference as an observer.
@ton.yeung In one frame, you take essentially the center of mass of all nearby galaxies and set that as your reference point, so that isn't moving. To an observer sitting there, your chair would seem to be moving rather quickly. But to you, your chair isn't moving at all.
I don't know what you mean by mass in this case.
(or, for that matter, moving away from the point of the big bang)
Sure, but what gravity cares about is really the stress-energy tensor, not the invariant mass.
You can have a nonzero stress-energy tensor and still be massless.

4:20 AM

To put it differently, photons are massless, but still gravitate in some sense.
I guess you can say that, though it's rather imprecise.
If you don't have gravity, things will still collide at least occasionally, for statistical reasons.
But you probably won't have any large scale structure develop
I don't know what you mean if you want to talk about the universe expanding in the absence of gravity.
It doesn't make sense to talk about cosmology without any gravity. All the results of modern cosmology are based on general relativity.
Not sure what you mean by that, but I don't think it's correct.
You still have a frame of reference yourself.
@ton.yeung It is 0 by definition.
That's exactly what your frame of reference means.

@Frosteeze SE chat bot app 2 and the app for rating, tagging and displaying media information about currently played audio track

You could still define other frames of reference, e.g. a frame of reference where you are always moving right at 1 m/s.
There's not much reason to do so, but there's nothing that stops you from doing it.
@ton.yeung Well, you can't give yourself infinite acceleration, but you could accelerate forever at a constant rate, in which case yes, you'd asymptotically approach the speed of light but not reach it.
Yes, that's true. If an observer accelerates away from a pulsar at a constant rate, they will see the pulsar make only finitely many rotations. The rate will appear to drop to 0 asymptotically.
That's true to some degree, yes.
In special relativity, it matters who is accelerating, though.
@ton.yeung yes, that's basically correct. If you measure the time interval between two events (not accelerating in the process), and someone else measures the interval between the same two events (but perhaps accelerates and decelerates in the process), your clock will always measure larger than theirs.

@ton.yeung I don't know how to answer a "why" question like this beyond just saying that it does. One of the assumptions of special relativity is that we have inertial frames of reference in which we can tell whether an object is accelerating or not, and special relativity only makes sense in such a frame.
So in reality, the fact that you're accelerating around the earth, which is accelerating around the sun, ..., all means special relativity doesn't precisely work for your frame, but in practice those accelerations are negligibly small.
Now you're talking about cosmology, which requires general relativity. Most of what I described above only applies to special relativity.
@ton.yeung General relativity allows for spacetimes which are curved, and the curvature is what leads to gravity. They are locally described approximately by special relativity, but on large scales they are not flat.
In general relativity, you don't have frames of reference at all.
@ton.yeung Physics in whatever universe you are looking at.
Yes, in reality, spacetime has curvature.
I'm not sure what you mean by that.
Sure. In general relativity, your spacetime is a smooth manifold M with a nondegenerate quadratic form of (1,3) signature on the tangent bundle (called the metric). Such a manifold is described by an atlas of charts from 4-dimensional Euclidean space to M, and the pullback of the metric along these charts gives structures which are Minkowski space (the domain of special relativity) up to quadratic terms in the coordinates, which describe curvature effects.

5:14 AM
I think what Logan is trying to convey is that unlike the abstract "perfect" state of the body assumed in general relativity, the real bodies actually undergo changes according to dynamically changing external effects, such as differences in gravity verctor over time, and the like
coz the planet moves, you move around the planet, the whole solar system is moving and it all slightly changes the total values of the variables in the equation

@Hakase Is the audio app a desktop app? I'd like to take a look and maybe contribute to it if I can
well regardless if it's a desktop or a web app, i'm still curious

it's a desktop app currently, rigged to grab MPC state from its web interface
there's listening stats and ratings
I'm fleshing out the whole logic thing right now, and it's kinda on slow development
but if you wanna help with something specific, sure, I'll do that instead of whatever else I'm doing :p

5:46 AM
finally some major development in Psycho Pass

@mirroroftruth I mean, with where it started, what did you expect?

He basically invoked Godwin's Law in the title.

Yeah almost.

6:27 AM
Godwin's law (or Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an Internet adage asserting that "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1"— that is, if an online discussion (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler or Nazism. Promulgated by American attorney and author Mike Godwin in 1990, Godwin's Law originally referred, specifically, to Usenet newsgroup discussions. It is now applied to any threaded online discussion, such as Internet forums, chat rooms and...

@HoiHoi-san who is that guy?
Could be.
Yeah looks like it

There was recently a meta post where the guy basically called everyone Nazis in the title. Lemme see if I can still find it.

Nazism (/ˈnɑːtsɪz(ə)m/; alternatively spelled Naziism), or National Socialism in full (German: Nationalsozialismus), is the ideology and practice associated with the 20th-century German Nazi Party and state as well as other related far-right groups. It was also promoted in other European countries with large ethnic German communities, such as Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia. Usually characterised as a form of fascism that incorporates scientific racism and antisemitism, Nazism originally developed from the influences of pan-Germanism, the Völkisch German nationalist movement and...

Fascism (/fæʃɪzəm/) is a form of radical authoritarian nationalism that came to prominence in early 20th-century Europe. Influenced by national syndicalism, fascism originated in Italy during World War I, combining more typically right-wing positions with elements of left-wing politics, in opposition to liberalism, Marxism, and traditional conservatism. Although fascism is often placed on the far-right within the traditional left–right spectrum, several academics have said that the description is inadequate. Fascists sought to unify their nation through an authoritarian state that promoted the...
Confucianism, also known as Ruism, is an ethical and philosophical system, on occasion described as a religion, developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius (551–479 BCE). Confucianism originated as an "ethical-sociopolitical teaching" during the Spring and Autumn Period, but later developed metaphysical and cosmological elements in the Han Dynasty. Following the official abandonment of Legalism in China after the Qin Dynasty, Confucianism became the official state ideology of the Han. Nonetheless, from the Han period onwards, most Chinese emperors have used a mix of Legalism...
