We used to put honking great big heat sinks on our L293D's, you can get a surprising amount of (over spec) current through them as long as they don't get too hot. *8')

Let them get too hot though, and all of the precious black smoke comes out and they stop working, hence you often find them socketed rather than soldered to the board. *8')
