Interesting find while I was looking for something else. Did you know that NARA has 83 rolls of microfilm in this publication? M-1742, RECORDS OF IMPERIAL RUSSIAN CONSULATES IN CANADA, 1898-1922 See archives.gov/research/microfilm/m1742.pdf for a description and the story of how the records came to the US.

@PearsonArtPhoto Just discovered The Nautical Gazette on Google Books. A sample issue is here: books.google.com/books?id=Mqk5AQAAIAAJ&dq
It might be interesting to search the back issues for their coverage of the Titanic.
Also see pg 30 of this book, section "Length of the Great Ship" books.google.com/…
I wonder what papers were given at the 12th International Conference of Navigation cited in that article?

Take a look at this search result
"Collection: Consent to Expenditure Letters

Reference: MH 64 1-27

The original document from which this information was extracted is part of a collection called “Consent to Expenditure Letters.” The collection is comprised of books from The National Archives of the United Kingdom, under the call number MH 64. They contain letters from the local government and the Ministry of Health authorizing the expenditure of funds for the emigration of poor individuals and families. The records list the names of individuals who were receiving assistance to emigrate from England. Each document contain

@JanMurphy Looking quickly at the NA document that will be too late for my ancestors because the last one to come to Australia arrived in 1880. The BYU one could be interesting as it accumulates data - I searched for Sellars/Sillars/Sellers 1840-1855 and although it did not find my 4th great grandfather Hugh or 3rd great grandfather Robert (both from Glasgow) at least it turned up 1840 and 1841 records for a John Sellers from Dorset - won't be a relation but the time period is promising

Those marriage witness records sound promising - no sign of my ancestors in them (yet) but overtime they may become very useful - thanks!

@PolyGeo Upon re-reading the question, I see that the info was already in the comments to the MWI question. Sorry to get your hopes up.

@JanMurphy Are you happy to see my question on Marriage Witness searches for London stay open and unanswered? I'm thinking that it will eventually roll into the one you answered but perhaps it can attract an answer or two if someone (@HarryVervet?) can answer "no such index exists now" and maybe in a year or two someone says "they are starting to come online now at ...".

Q: Searching marriage records for London by witnesses?

PolyGeoToday a key piece of information about my 4th great grandmother Sarah Osment Smyth came to my attention when @ValerieFennell wrote: I have Sarah Osment Smyth as witness at the marriage of James Smith, Felter and Hatter of Tooley Street Bermondsey to Sarah Jones on the 30th January 1787. S...

@PolyGeo I'm happy to leave yours open so if you find the witnesses for your couple. you can self-answer. The linked question on Wildy's index needs work. Possibly write up all the comments as a Community Wiki answer? I don't know. Should we discuss on Meta?
Slightly miffed that I tweeted your Q on #AncestryHour today and everyone suggested things you have already done.
It was sweet of them to answer, but I would have loved some new info.
@PolyGeo I've re-titled the older question to make it more distinct from yours.

@JanMurphy Sometimes when there is valuable info buried in comments on GIS I'll comment/ping to suggest someone writes up a brief answer from their comments. If that idea is not taken up by the next time I look back at the question I write an answer that starts "As commented by @xxxxx: 'what they said in their comment`"

@PolyGeo Indeed, but this is a 2012 question, so who knows if you can get any traction.

A: Can we allow moderators to upgrade a comment to an answer?

PolyGeoAs a moderator on two sites, I do not see any need or have any desire for a tool such as this which could potentially reward a user who only comments when we want them to be answering questions. I would encourage all users who see "comments that answer questions" not finding their way into an an...

@JanMurphy If its old then I say "just do it!" :-)

I would much rather have Judy come over and write her own answer. :p
