that was a sad/funny article. Not sure why someone who is a core contributor feel the need to justify his coding ability, but basically unless he spoke only about core contributors, it shows that he is not familiar with enough "implementors" which are the biggest driving force that brings wordpress to 25% of the market
if you don't use ajax but urls with some magic var (for simplicity) you can atleast bypass some of the initialization process and die in the plugin itself
a non cached img url for the plugin directory would have done better as it would have worked for users which disable JS
.... or he could just admit that WP standard development model just do not apply here and used a simple php script that is being accessed directly
