stupid mac autocorrect

yeah
in fact in the application they specify you need to spell it correctly or they won't reply ;)
I got an expression of interest, but they really want more open source efforts
and then ironically, Matt Mullenweg is on this week's SO podcast

They are hiring - do you suppose just coincidence :)

fair point :)
wow, I'd missed the controversy on this:

Q: Time to take a stand

Joel SpolskyI am extremely upset by President Trump’s executive order on immigration. It is immoral, unconstitutional, and fundamentally un-American. The community on Stack Overflow is made up of users from all over the world. At least 100,000 posts on Stack Overflow were written by users from the seven cou...

yeah that thread mostly makes me conclude that there are entirely too many assholes on SO/SE
you had the head of mobile for SE pouring his heart out about how this impacts him personally and one of the dominant reactions was effectively people shouting "shut up"

2:42 AM
yeah :/
although if we'd posted it probably would have been closed as off-topic ;) (ducks)

Anyone able to find a current airline flying Tupolevs that I can search in Kayak?
(so North Korea's fleet is probably out of scope)
and Cubana's....sigh

If searching, try tupolev :)

and 6 As to them.

Q: Where can I find maps of buses in Muscat?

Adam ElsodaneyHaving visited Muscat at the beginning of February 2017 and not currently driving, I attempted to travel around the Muscat area by its bus network - Mwasalat. (FYI, visiting Muscat without a car is challenging to say the least!) The problem is that it's not easy to find your way around with litt...

3:15 AM
one has two answers :)
"Kavminvodyavia" (KMV Avia), "Siberia Airlines" (S7 Airlines), "Krasnoyarsk Airlines" (KrasAir) any good?

S7 doesn't seem to any more?
I flew them back in 2008 but found my ticket and even that was an A320 :/
looks like quite a few did, but not any more.

3:56 AM
Sorry about that. Tupolev's web site includes "Nowadays, it's successfully operated in the leading Russian airlines, such as..." and I did not realise that by Nowadays they meant a decade or so ago :(

lol

Is it OK to ask about how many have voted so far?

it's publically available isn't it?
can you not see the paragraph: 3,363 voters were eligible, 964 visited the site during the election, 699 visited the election page, and 377 voted

no, I cannot see that paragraph
but thanks for revealing the secret :)

interesting. wonder why it's hidden
doesn't say mods only or anything
now I wonder what else on that page is hidden

4:12 AM
You describe what you can see and we'll tell you whether we can too ;)
1% ain't exactly a great turn out :(

I wonder what the last one was

307

source?

You got me for the mo!

ah found it
2,414 voters were eligible, 770 visited the site during the election, 709 visited the election page, and 307 voted

4:33 AM
I'm not sure it's exactly 1%, if only 964 have even visited the site during the election so far. A user who earned 200 rep years ago and hasn't been back since isn't a very likely voter
and I know i don't always vote on other SE sites where I'm not active, as I'd rather leave that to the people who will most be impacted by the choice
377/964 is more like 39% so far

yup, I'm eligible on several sites too, but only voted on travel

3 hours later…
7:44 AM
no, i'm also doing interviews :)
but you're right about the open source work. A lot of companies today seem to expect that you do open-source work in your free time, after your normal job just to show that you're interested in programming

2 hours later…
9:57 AM
@RoflcoptrException the best of both worlds is if you manage to find a company which publishes part of it's software on GitHub
then you can show your OS skillz in your paid time
@pnuts isn't it 10%? 3363 eligible vs. 377 who voted

~10% would (IMO) indeed be better - I was measuring against the size of the Community as a whole (ie I included ~32k users not eligible - probably about 31k of whom visited once only).

@pnuts that's like including people under 18 in the voters pool :)

I agree - but under 18s can be effected by the policies of those others elect :)

let's hope we don't elect a Trump then
2

heck, pnuts' formula is more like including everybody who's ever visited the US in the US voter pool

10:12 AM
And it's actually 0.01% since 400k people visit Travel.SE each month

@ZachLipton Well, it's only out by a factor of 10 :)

maybe we should count everybody in the world who travels, since they could be t.se visitors :)

@MarkMayo the mods really screwed up on that one. It was one thing to try and block SOPA (since it directly affects StackExchange and the issue was non-partisan), but this?! The admins have truly gone mad

@ZachLipton Maybe potential travellers too - once we have helped them iron out the obstacles in their way?

@JonathanReez I tried to do that, but normally I got ask whether I do any programming outside of my work

10:18 AM
hmm, but everyone could be a potential traveler in an ideal world, so our turnout is 307/7.5 billion

@pnuts 7.5 billion people were eligible, 400k voters visited the site and 307 voted

See, 1% not so far out (with rounding up) :)

I feel like the Illuminati for having such power over the world

The results are in yet :)

I mean, I'm one of the 307 who decide the fate of Travel

10:21 AM
Ah!
I have a suspicion that Mark deciding to run last time was all it took - never mind voting.

10:33 AM
Seems we need 428 voters just to equal the proportion (of eligible!) of last time.

1 hour later…
11:49 AM
/me wonders who the equivalent of Trump would be in this election....

@MarkMayo Doesn't the equivalent of Trump contradict the concept of a globetrotter?

12:05 PM
@MarkMayo Lucky for us Trump is a unique special snowflake.

12:31 PM
@MarkMayo if Olielo participated, that would be him
or whoever is the guy who keeps voting opposite on close/reopen votes
@gerrit I'd say Trump is pretty well travelled

1:00 PM
@JonathanReez Who votes how on close/reopen votes is public.

Yo @Kuba could you please edit your answer here: travel.stackexchange.com/questions/87106/… adding details to answer the question here: travel.stackexchange.com/questions/88594/…
This way we can safely close as duplicate.
Thanks! :)

2:04 PM
@JonathanReez But he also wants to put America First.

Q: UK Short Term Student Visa

PariI'm from India and I am a mature student. I am 25 and currently I am enrolled in an open university here. I have been accepted at Birkbeck University for Theater and English BA program. Since I have been out of full time education, I was advised to take up a short foundation course before I tak...

Could you please migrate it to Expats?

Oh thanks.
I thought you were on holiday?

i was last weekend

Why was I convinced you had left for a couple weeks? Boh.

no not at all ::)

5:19 PM
Maxed out on close votes. Suddenly feel like I'm on SO. :)
@RoflcoptrException Oh ok then. :)

mts
Pro-tip for close voters: if the Q has an answer by @GayotFow then vote up, not to close.

Actually, now that you mention it @mts and that our resident mod @RoflcoptrException is indahouse, what is the politics on close-voting questions which received helpful answers?
Personally I close-vote if the question doesn't belong on TSE regardless of whether it is answered or not.
The rules come first, I guess?
Also @mts perché diavolo non ti sei candidato come mod?

mts
@JoErNanO a) if you want to be more German than me, yes you could VTC but personally if it has a useful answer and is not off-topic by far (i.e. not VTC as dupes but VTC far off yes) then I usually vote to leave open since we want to be a reference and the same answer to different questions deserves two Qs at times. b) I just don't have the time to dedicate ATM and for the next year at least, and there's far more qualified candidates out there ;)

Ach I got called German. :)
I guess the VTC is to discourage these borderline off-topic questions in the future. Maybe we should change the site policies to include borderline cases if travel related?
I don't know about the more qualified candidates out there. I know you are level-headed and fair and IMHO that makes for an excellent mod.

mts
It's always a close call and I would not vote to reopen, but if a question has been inactive for long and seems useful I prefer it be open.
You are too kind! As said time constraints, and I have already taken stances in the pre-election that would cross with the neutrality I'd like to see in a mod.
What part of the world will you be in next? staying in France?

5:38 PM
@mts That is a great question. So far the only certitude I have is that the lab won't hire me for a postdoc: lab policy.
Also I don't know what I want to do. I know that I have come to hate academic research though.
Working on eternal prototypes doesn't satisfy me.

mts
So tending towards the industry?! Doesn't say much about where you will end up though, no?
Or will you become a professional traveller :)

It does not. I never really chose the country. I always chose the job. Wherever that may be.
If I land a job in say, Brisbane, I'll take it provided the job is what I want to do.
Borders are meaningless IMHO.

mts
It is a good approach, it also brought me to Italy. Good luck!

But before thinking about anything job-related I think I'll take a couple months of holiday.
If I manage to defend in September that should leave me with at least three months of free time.

mts
Great, any itinerary set up already?

5:46 PM
Oktoberfest is step 1
:D

mts
You know it's gonna be a while till then, it should more be step 1e10

@JoErNanO yeah, sorry about that, got carried away editing and close-voting old Qs
I usually try to close-vote Qs as dupes as often as possible to make sure that the spread of questions is as narrow as possible
sometimes it's a bit too broad

1 hour later…
7:11 PM
@JoErNanO Interestingly I can't find any post about it, but questions should be closed if the rules say so, even if answers already exists
there's no reason to keep them open just because answers exists

7:56 PM
I will also remind that close != delete

8:19 PM
@MarkMayo I'm sorry, what was this in reference to?

@JonathanReez ... (for non-dupes) unfortunately :)
@phoog 'Clothing' naked URLs.

2 hours later…
10:02 PM
@phoog there was a link to a question where you'd "declothed" a non-naked URL and we were wondering why- you'd actually rolled it back.

10:19 PM
@MarkMayo because in general I prefer naked URLs unless the URL is full of encoded data. The clothed URL hides information from the reader, often under useless words such as "here" and "link."

I'm so sick of this
2
what possibly is the point? besides making me leave the site in disgust

@MarkMayo clothed URLs also make it easier for people to visit malicious sites unintentionally because they hide the domain from the reader.

@phoog I all browsers I know you can still see the url when hovering

10:34 PM
@RoflcoptrException I can't hover on my phone, and I prefer to use the mouse as little as possible when using a "real" computer.

But you are the one who provided the links?

10:50 PM
@pnuts I don't know.
Which edit are we talking about?

@pnuts As you can see from the edit history, the links were in the first version, so yes, I did.
Or rather yes, I was.

Yet you are worried about 'hiding' their maliciousness?!

11:28 PM
@pnuts no, that's more of a general reason for disliking the practice.
I prefer to be transparent.
