@JoErNanO are you going to answer that rome2rio Q yourself or waiting for someone to jump at it? ;)

9:50 AM
@mts I use Rome2Rio to check the journeys. It doesn't factor in connection times though. It "just" tells you what means of transportation are available.
Maybe I should clarify the question.

There also seems to be no way of telling Rome2Rio that you want to leave at a particular time of day

mts
I added an answer that points out just these strengths and weaknesses of rome2rio
I actually thought you had just that in mind but I see better now

@CMaster I'll have to try that out.

mts
you might have had to specify that you were looking for something beyond rome2rio

In that Milan to Stromboli example I know there's one ferry per day. So the flight must take this into account. Plus one must also consider transferring from the airport to the harbor. Rome2rio tells me it can be done. It doesn't give specifics in terms of which plane to get, at what time, etc. It does link to booking/airline sites though.
I wonder if this question is a duplicate.
@mts +1'd it.

@JoErNanO thanks. however owing to your specification in the Q I wonder if I should take my A down?

10:48 AM
@JoErNanO I searched for you and did not find any 'all of Italy' public transport site, it seems Italy is way behind my area of Europe in digitalizing. (Which does not surprise me) but it is hard to find train/bus/ferry combinations if the bus times are not available.

@Willeke I'm currently based in Italy and I don't know of any such site either. I can't even find a site that includes all the bus lines...

@mts as the bus companies are not all online (according to several of the sites I did read) it is very unlikely that any overal transport site can start anytime soon.

@mts Absolutely not. It provides valuable info.
@Willeke Thanks for the hard work. It'd be great to extend rome2rio to include these features. It's good to know a trip can be done. The question is how exactly can it be done?
@mts where are you in Italy?

@jpatokal sorry for my stupidity earlier, i was reading fast and missed that part :)

Q: Internet security in Ukraine

thumbtackthiefI am a United States citizen planning a week-long trip to Ukraine. A friend advised me that Internet security is less-than-great there. What steps should I take to protect myself if I use public or hotel wifi connections for my smart phone and laptop while there?

8:30 PM
I would say that Internet security is always less that ideal and that all people traveling should be aware about the dangers and how to avoid them.
Not sure which Stack Exchange site it would fit though

@Willeke on that map even Belgium and Switzerland are gray despite French being official and so is South Africa despite English being official. Also Rwanda is blue despite being officially Anglophone (though Rwanda is indeed an odd situation, having recently changed from being Francophone).

@phoog indeed. The map could be even more coloured with official languages. I think they have just done the main languages they were certain of.

9:01 PM
@Willeke @HeidelBerGensis I just had a closer look, and what's going on in East Africa? Kenya and Tanzania appear to be striped with English and a language that's not in the key; I presume that is Swahili.

Sorry, I have never been in any part of Africa and I do not have other language maps handy.

Well it was more of a rhetorical question anyway to call into question the rigor with which the map has been prepared.

I would not worry about Chinese (also as Mandarin is not as much a general language as the map assumes) nor Hindi, (almost certainly the same reason)
Besides, I do not expect to go to either language area anyhow.
I think I stick with just English besides my native Dutch.

9:18 PM
Good point about Mandarin and Hindi.

@phoog I assume it is swahili in bothh
i met people from kenya before.. never from tanzania..
but i think swahili is spoken there as well..
that map can not be accurate.. they are coloring the whole countries..
it does not work that way.. i guess
