@Willeke Thanks, so in your experience, round-trip or north-south/vv?
@GayotFow Yeah, I consider myself very lucky to be able to go there. Is this documentary available for free somewhere? I was also advised to see the Lord of the Ring trilogy :)
I have watched episodes 1, 2, and 3. Awesome. I have a friend who is sailing there from Hawaii with about 11 or 12 friends aboard, I even asked a question on their behalf here.
But for me sailing on a never ending party isn't an option. :(
So I'm stuck waiting for a flight
@MarkMayo be sure to check UKVI's web stats, we have a 0 bounce rate. I think you will be proud.
The 2016 London social season is just getting underway There are no set dates for this but traditionally it starts at Guy Fawkes Day and more or less ends when Parliament rises in late December.
There are lots of charity balls during the season and invariably lots of Americans and Canadians a...
@chx My real one is a relic from the Napoleonic era that I got at an antiques store, but I am too scared to wear it for fear of losing it. So I also have a fake one that I use at weddings and such.
Fake ones are prettier but since nobody knows it's a fake you can still get challenged.
@Bernhard, what I did was north to south on the north island, which allowed me to do much. On the south island I did a figure of 8, as I wanted to see both coasts as well as experience going over the mountains in the middle.
I had 6 weeks but did run out of time, so the trek back up to Auckland for my flight was just taking the train from Wellington, no time left to sight see.
If you are happy enough with going one way, that might well be the best way to go.
North and South island are different, I would select the direction of travel based on temperatures to be expected, as both directions would allow you new sights which are amazing. If the temperature is no breaker for you, I would go north to south, with the amazing fjordlands as a high light in the last part of your trip.
@Willeke Thanks for the tips! Considering I will probably have 3 to 3.5 weeks I should not do a round trip, as it will only add a lot to the distance I guess
I did stop with several people who are also knot tyers. (All members of the IGKT igkt.net ) And I did take a day extra at each stop as I like slow moving.
I could easily have filled 3 months and still run out of time.
For the comming summer I am planning a trip to Denmark, friend will drive his own car and we plan 3 days driving with overnight stops for what is an 8 hours motorway distance.
With train travel you are stuck with your luggage when doing a midway sight seeing or a half day in a town before or after your next leg.
I really do not understand people who think they can see a whole continent in a week. That is what I plan for the main city, on a longer trip.
I also met some Americans who were in NZ for a week and had a side step to Australia for one day. They ended up to spend almost all that time in transit, about 3 hours in Sydney. Lost two days in NZ for it.
@Willeke, wow, one week for NZ. But in the US you have to work with two weeks of holiday a year. For us in the netherlands it is a lot better. But for me 4 weeks of work is really the max I can get
But in cities I can be quite efficient, because not everything is interesting for me. I spent three days in New York and really saw more than what I wanted to see there.
I have been able to talk my boss into 7 weeks off, with still two weeks for a scout camp and the odd day, but I did work for it in overtime in the year before.
Current boss (same company) has told me to forget it.
A week is for London or Paris, for NYC three days were enough.
I am actually considering to take a sabbatical at some point, to just spend the time on travelling. Had a goodbye party for a friend yesterday who quit is job and will be travelling south america for half a year
With 5 travels (2 weekends and 3 longer ones) each year, I have no reason to complain. It helps that part of the time I stay with friends, often one with boyfriend who lives in England.)
spexor.eu makes me hopeful regarding travel in old age. I know I won't be healthy. I do what I can but I hope for technology to have my back (pun very much intended)
If I rent a car from Kingston Airport to drive to Port Antonio, the road choices include:
A3
B1: Mountainous Route
A4: coastal road. Longer route
I understand that in general, the condition of the roads are poor. What is the process / criteria to decide the route?
@Willeke: Thanks- Question pertains to best route road condition wise given there are 3 routes and information is not latest , given that there was road improvement work going on. This is in India between two places. My criteria is specific- good road doesn't matter if longer
I guess that sounds fine... wanted to doubly check before posting
So you can ask which of the three roads have best surface and have least work still going on (as that might slow you down.) But you need to be careful with your wording, asking for facts.
@Fiksdal : Thanks- would "best surface for a hatchback , distance not being a constraint" sound fine? After listing out alternatives from research? BTW- left a message for you on our chat SE Enthuisasts
Try something like "even surface, least holes, wide road, non-bumpy, asphalt rather than gravel" etc. If you use such specific criteria, you'll ward off all the POB close votes.
