6:29 AM
white people are cute, they are scared to visit Paris, but they still visit Iran and Afghanistan..

1 hour later…
7:47 AM
@NeanDerThal What's the threat in Afghanistan? :)

8:39 AM
Not sure many people visit Afghanistan…

9:19 AM
Not sure if the people visiting Afghanistan are the one who'd be scared to visit Paris atm :)

9:29 AM
I tried
I was at the embassy in Tajikistan
wanted to enter at Ishkashim
had a 4-day window to go into the Wakhan corridor

Q: Can I get warfarin in Tajikistan (or nearby?)

Mark MayoI've run into a major problem, requiring urgent Warfarin. However, am in Khorog, Tajikistan, and there's NONE in town, and the pharmacist at the hospital believes there to be none in the country, save for the 5 tablets in my bag. My question is, what would be the nearest city from Dushanbe that...

so had to turn around and go back to Dushanbe
still disappointed I didn't make it
Iran was awesome, @NeanDerThal!

10:09 AM
I would like to go to Iran, even made a friend this summer who lives in Teheran
time to visit him soon
@MarkMayo btw hi! haven't seen you for a long time :) Still in Australia?
In the meantime I'm also slightly concerned about mindcorrisive. He hasn't been online for weeks and on FB there is also no activities since more than a month

10:39 AM
@RoflcoptrException I'm around ;)
I moved back after travelling in August, back to Sydney

10:50 AM

Maybe I should
Also because I'm going back to Canada next week and won't have this much time for mod duties :)

1:00 PM

that's not so long!

thank god

3 hours later…
4:31 PM
@MarkMayo been there a few times,, never left the airport..

5:18 PM
Ah, chasing the end of a PhD
although I gather that's a somewhat harder experience in the US (and therefore maybe Canada) than in the UK

yes, it's a moving deadline
it depends really on your adviser
but you're right, US is gnereally quite hard

In the UK, you have a fixed deadline
normally 4 years full time/7 part time
don't submit within that - instant fail
So there is always an end in view

ok i see
here it's more like that you have to work on it until your advisor is satisfied

most people submit at some point in their fourth year
and it does need approval
if you're on a funded program you'll ususally get 3-3.5 years funding, so that gives a bit of a push too
me being the way I am, I submitted the day before my absolute deadline

yeah why not :)
but it's amazing how different phd programs are in different countries

5:29 PM
Would have been nice to have got done a few months earlier, spend less time not getting any money
but I often need real deadline pressure to make me get on with well, anything
on the plus side, got a pass straight away, with about 2 days worth of editorial corrections only
things have changed a bit over here since then too
they've made a typical PhD a lot more structured
with things called Doctoral Training Centres
trying to bring down the number of washouts I think

yes
a good thing probably
do you get a lot of money?
while doing your phd? or are you really a poor student

Depends on your funding source and program
most PhDs in STEM subjects are funded, some in humanities are, very few in arts are
pretty much all have a project outlined before hand - although it may evolve and change over time of course
Says that minimum PhD stipend (so what anyone funded by a research council will get) is £14k a year, roughly

That's not counted as a salary though, so it's tax free
and you are exempt from a couple of other taxes for being a student
so it's like having a poor, but not minimum wage job

5:35 PM
but various programs offer more than the minimum, especially if there is an industrial parter involved

ok that's not too bad

and most departments will offer (or even require) some demonstrating/tutorial hours, which will pay something
During my undergrad, I lived with an american who came over to do a PhD because the UK system offered a chance to get a PhD faster than in the US, and without debt

that's just ridicoulus

although I think research council studentships are EU only

in north america the wages are really really low
i'm really happy to have an acceptable wage during my phd

5:37 PM
Yeah, my understanding is that normally you don't get paid for the PhD, maybe even have to pay fees
but you can/must do teaching hours
is that right?

yes i think so
i dunno exactly
but that's what i heard from others
