Q: Who was the girl with Kyle Reese in the Terminator?

riccs_0xWhen Kyle Reese was in a car hearing the radio near a construction field, he was dreaming about the future. He was running alongside a girl who was hit by a machine, is this woman Star?

2:36 AM
@JackBNimble ah ok

2 hours later…
4:12 AM
How you doin?

5:03 AM
@MajorStackings HA HA.

user132126
@Riker Welp, I know what's in my nightmares tonight

SQB
5:58 AM
So... Is this working?

... It's still here.

6:57 AM
What is the point of new answer to batman children question and did he really adopted Carrie and Casandra ?????
Who is comics expert here ???

7:40 AM
Well, I checked back in to see what's going on and I see folks are still closing original questions as dups to newer questions. Brilliant..

SQB
8:08 AM
Which is okay, if the newer question is broader or otherwise better.

2 hours later…
9:46 AM
@MajorStackings I didn't close, but it appears to me that both the question and the answer in the newer post are slightly more detailed.

10:05 AM
Good morning everyone!
@SQB The room will go on ;) I recommend everyone to read Null's answer, which reminds us of rules of chatting here.
On site-related note - why on Earth do we have a tag?!
> The process of change of anything, but normally characters. For example, the transformation from Tom Riddle to Lord Voldemort. Transformations are not always immediate.
Looks exactly like the sort of thing that should not be a tag.

Agreed

Have I shared my to-burninate tag list here?
Y no onebox :(
@Ixrec ^

10:36 AM
Nitpick: There is a big difference between colonisation and exploration
But I agree those are all not good tags
Also, thank you autocorrect for almost inserting a dirty word in that last sentence

I'm not saying all of them are bad, but I don't see a valid reason for most of them to exist, either.
A question might mention those things, but it's very rarely about them, which seems to be the main criterion when deciding if a tag is needed.

SQB
11:18 AM
@Gallifreyan like Celine Dion in Titanic?

@SQB Exactly! (It's that boat from "The Voyage of the Damned", right?)

lol

SQB
@Gallifreyan agreed. No-one is an expert on within SF.

Workplace has been recently rocking HNQ, Arqade-style:

Q: As a non-drinker, am I expected to not be hired as a bartender?

AnonI'm a 23 year old bartender, and I don't drink alcohol. From 18 to 22 I worked in my father's pub, where I served classic beers, shots, and cocktails. Last year I decided to try my own career. I read a lot about alcohol and cocktails and mixology, I also did a flair bartender course, but since I...

Q: My manager told me I should feel comfortable about telling him if I want to leave the company. Should I tell him?

Kevin XuI work as a software engineer and have been at my company for almost 3 years now. I have recently started considering other opportunities outside of my current role. There isn't anything particularly wrong with my current role, but I just feel (after being at the company for 2 or so years) that t...

And I won't even mention parenting.

IME, Workplace is the only SE site where the HNQs consistently have good answers with useful advice in them

There was one Q&A on Parenting where the answers (obscurely) told the OP "You're an idiot for doing that".

well, sometimes that is the answer

Something about a parent denying the child communication with an older person (a friend).
This one's nice:

I guess the answer will be along the lines of "get a job", if the question is not put on hold before that.

yeah, not a lot of alternatives to that

Hi. I'm new to this chat. "This Saturday (May 13th) we will be watching Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind"....what does "we will be watching" mean? Does online streaming of movies go on here?

@blue Yes, I think we'll be watching it in a room on Watch2Gether. There'll be a copy there.

Anonymous
@Gallifreyan Ah I see. Cool!

12:34 PM
@Riker Oh Jesus Christ, what have you done?

12:48 PM
@DrRDizzle Hum, to put this as delicately as possible, I feel uncomfortable reading profanity in an open chat forum. Can you please respect the feelings of others that may not agree with the need to use, what is by many, considered to be profanity?

I saw this movie on late night tv where a man had to speed all over town in a bus. And if he didn't keep up his speed it would explode. I think it was called *The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down"

@JackBNimble Not Speed then?
And the quote is from The Simpsons.

Q: Story Identification: Book about aliens arriving in an old country; people capture their spaceship and arrive at alien's planet

VoronwëI'm searching for a science-fiction book set in the quite an old time: around the 15th-16th century. Features aliens arriving in a spaceship to an old country: likely a western country from what I remember. Here are the details that I can remember: Read the book during 2005-2008. Definitely no...

Basically the same plot I just described.

@EnigmaMaitreya @DrRDizzle I can remove that message if you agree and feel it's inappropriate.

1:26 PM
@Gallifreyan I refuse to accept that mild blasphemy is offensive to anyone over the age of 13, which is minimum age you have to be to use the site.
2
It's 2017, not 1517.

sigh In my cycle, we used to understand humour.

@DrRDizzle I can appreciate your apparent atheist point of view, but 90% of the world does not agree with your point of view.

@EnigmaMaitreya That's probably not true.

@Bellerophon Please define that so I can understand what is not true?

ugh

1:29 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya I think more than 10% of the world are not offended by someone saying Jesus Christ.

@DrRDizzle Fine let me restate that a portion of the worlds population does not agree with you,is that acceptable?

@EnigmaMaitreya And a portion do. So?

considering the situation and our reputation, I don't think we're in a position to tell someone saying "x is offensive" that they're wrong and should stop being offended
8

@DrRDizzle So, me being offended is subordinate to you?

Alright, stop before this goes too far.
Both of you.

1:31 PM
@Bellerophon I will comply

@DrRDizzle @EnigmaMaitreya Let's agree to disagree and put all of this behind us ;)

@Gallifreyan, just popped in to say I most likely won't be able to make it tonight, sorry

For the time being, we should assume anyone saying something offends them is doing so in good faith and respect that. Only after we see a pattern of people abusing that privilege should we rethink that.
12

@Gallifreyan I agree :)

Let's switch to a topic everyone apreciates: tacos.
Or Probius from Heroes of the Storm:

1:34 PM
@Gallifreyan I prefer Smite. Any MOBAs that aren't Smite offend me.

Or a the New Alien Movie is taking heat because of the Prometheus Connection.

oh right, is the new Alien movie any good?

I have not seen it, but I am having a hard time understanding why a to be released movie is taking heat because of another movie in the same world

depends on the franchise, but I'd agree it doesn't make a lot of sense for Alien as that one has never really been about the continuity and long-running plot arcs

I'm seeing it next week hopefully.

1:41 PM
I will also, With Luck It will be in 3D but I am kind of hoping that the new exit path for the Baby Alien is not gimicked to be an explosive 3D effect
Actualy I think there are 3 Movies I want to see towards the end of May
@Ixrec I think it is related to Push Back for some reason against "The Engineers"

there are a lot of good reasons to not like Prometheus so some negativity was inevitable
I'll have to watch the movie myself before I can get any more specific than that

@Ixrec Shrug I would have liked to see the concept "Meet your Maker" as a tangible, science based thought experiment pursued. In part because we are gaining the ability to create Clones and AI. IF that does happen then we are going to need to have a handle on were they fit. Are they property/slaves or are they .... something else

I liked a lot of the ideas and world-building in Prometheus, its problems were mostly in making the plot plausible and the characters interesting, which sadly overshadowed and/or wasted a lot of its potential.
I also was/am hoping for way more exploration of things like meeting the aliens that engineered us

@Ixrec Well yes, I agree with that but I do not see that as any different (not being argumentative, just pointing this out) from Alien the first one. ALIENS the second one is so far the absolute best of the 4+1 movies

This room is not going to be long for the world I suspect.

1:49 PM
@Ixrec Or that exiled us here because we were to violent "Villainous" and Scum for them :)

hm, interesting, to me the first Alien did only the bare minimum world-building to get us to "scary alien killing people" and then focused on that (which is part of why it was so good)
come to think of it we've had a lot of movies recently that had issues focusing on just one or two things to do well

@Ixrec That is what I saw in Prometheus. A concept was put on the table and a plot and characters were built around it.

SQB
@JackBNimble well, it is at the end of the universe.

I am also hoping this one "Blade Runner 2049" is done well.
"This Company Plans to Mine the Moon — and It's Not Alone" : http://www.space.com/36829-this-company-plans-to-mine-the-moon.html - "“The first-ever private mining operation on the moon is scheduled to kick off in 2020, when a landing craft sent by Florida-based Moon Express will ferry a single scoop of lunar dirt and rocks back to Earth.
… the owners of this private firm have something history-making in mind for that little ball of extraterrestrial soil: They plan to sell it.
"It will instantly become the most valuable and scarcest material on Earth," says Bob Richards, the CEO of Moon Exp
So things are getting interesting

Awesome name. I am loving it. I resented Mos Eisley's name.

Q: Who exactly was the squint-eyed southerner in the Lord of the Rings?

PhazhaldWho exactly is he? He is mentioned once in the Fellowship of the Ring as one of the instrumental characters who cause the Nazgûl to attack the Inn at Bree. Is he a servant of Sauron or Saruman? Clearly he helps the Nazgûl facilitate the attack by warning them after Frodo accidentally uses the Ri...

wonders what if any environmental restrictions we'll want to place on Moon mining

@Ixrec :) Hum, honestly as much as I am for it, I am some what .... concerned about the return to Earth. Not enough to object but it will be precedent setting .....

I've got no objections to it in principle either, but yeah there are so many possible ramifications to consider
both good and bad

@Ixrec As to your question, I am currently at no restrictions. Because Earth resources used to Build in Space vs Lunar Resources used to build in space. Moon resources are less important than Earth Resources

yeah, the lack of living things on the Moon makes it relatively simple
what would get weird is if we managed to mine enough of it to affect things like tidal forces
that's obviously an extremely long ways off if it ever happens, but who knows

2:07 PM
Agree and I would expect us to stop well before that ever occured and switch to the Asteroid Belt and Rings of Jupiter and Saturn.

hopefully

@Loong To bad I can't screen capture an FX from the series "Aftermath" were some large Asteroids hit the far side of the Moon putting large blocks of the Moon into space that end up coming to Earth. It was, in my opinion, a great FX and looks realistic.

@Gallifreyan Good movie :)

2:11 PM
It is! The soundtrack alone is great.

@CreationEdge yes, I too have nightmares of @DrRDizzle stalking me and explaining why movies are bad

rofl

you have not known true horror until you hear dizzle's review of assassin's creed
@DrRDizzle bad things

@Gallifreyan I thought the "concept" so as to not spoil anything was worthy of considering as well.

user132126
I saw Assassin's Creed the other night. Best comic book movie I've seen to date

2:15 PM
@Riker You know, I got AC from Netflix fully expecting it to be something that was just background. I liked it and interestingly enough my wife sat down and watched it also.

is that a compliment?

@EnigmaMaitreya yes, it just wasn't the same as the games
good in its own right though

I hear it overemphasized the apple and eagles a bit

Q: Who was the first Hero to reveal his secret Identity to the public?

In newer media many heroes dont keep a secret identy for example Tony Stark in the Iron Man movies. That got me thinking which superhero was the first to go public whith hi...

2:28 PM
Hehe - that ransomware scare certainly should tech people to apply updates on time.

@Gallifreyan :) Always

SQB
@Gallifreyan you'd think that, but I'm not optimistic.

user132126
@ixrec The eagles, omg, so heavy handed

user132126
I saw Probius mentioned. You play HotS?

I haven't heard the news for a while, did they pay out?

2:37 PM
I didn't like AC, I fell asleep because I thought it was boring

@CreationEdge I do.

user132126
Cool

user132126
I'm hero level 103 now

@Edlothiad That's sad :( I needed someone to open the shared video room.

user132126
I'm generally terrible at everything but support but Sylvanas is pretty fun

2:43 PM
@CreationEdge I generally use Nova, though I try to play a bit of everything.

Also, was that a joke about "Jesus Christ" being offensive?

user132126
Right now I play whichever is my lowest level, trying to get exposure and loot chests

user132126
My highest is Malf at 10. Pretty decent with him

@Edlothiad Apparently not; let's aim for a high level of non-offensiveness right now.

@Gallifreyan There has to be some level of sensibility?

2:48 PM
@Edlothiad I would err on the side of caution for now. I suggest try and avoid things that some people could find offensive (like Jesus Christ) but I would think that if you do occasionally say those things then no action should be taken against you and you should just apologise to anyone who was offended.

user132126
It's a basic matter of respect. If a user says their offended by some language, the respectful thing to do is say "OK, I won't use that around you".

user132126
Not argue whether or not people are allowed to be offended.

@Bellerophon I will do as the community here prefers as I will not be one to cause a strife and ruin it for everyone. Although I will say that even though members of our community crossed one line. There is going too far in the other direction.

user132126
If we can't fundamentally get that through to SFF chat, we're toast.

@Edlothiad Let us ask you a question. Assume you are an atheist, and some one comes in and starts saying the Earth is 10,000 years old, God did this, God did that. Would you find that offensive? Understand I respect you and your opinion

2:52 PM
No

1 min ago, by CreationEdge
Not argue whether or not people are allowed to be offended.
that includes arguing that it is offensive
we've agreed not to say it for now, let's move on

@Ixrec In compliance :)

so it looks like Alien: Covenant also comes out a week early in the UK

@Edlothiad Indeed there is but for now we should play it safe. We can't be punished for over caution.

I just think we should keep this point very dear and close to us
1 hour ago, by Ixrec
For the time being, we should assume anyone saying something offends them is doing so in good faith and respect that. Only after we see a pattern of people abusing that privilege should we rethink that.

2:53 PM
As I said, tacos.

and the reviews say it does not suck

I don't like tacos

so I'm probably going to go see it in about an hour

the hard shells just break awkwardly and get everyweher

2:54 PM
I think wraps are cool.

@Gallifreyan Is that a taco carrier?

Never actually had a taco.

hopefully the new Alien movie manages to be at least as scary as what happened to Mos

Wraps are better than tacos, because they stay in one piece

@Ixrec I have likes all of his movies and do not expect to be disappointed

SQB
2:54 PM
I've learned that the line between discussing offensiveness and offending can be unusually fine.

@Edlothiad put a soft taco on the plate underneath the hard taco. then all the fallings will create a second taco... win win
3

There's insert strikethrough here no end strikethrough here such thing as a soft taco?
" folded or rolled around a filling"
My life is a lie!

@Gallifreyan @Riker submission for daily floof 5/13....

@Edlothiad Not that again...
@Skooba I thought those had to be animated

@Skooba floof approved
@Gallifreyan nope
just floofy things

2:58 PM
woot woot

We're pinning floof now?

This is day 5 if i'm mnot mistaken

Soooooo just a GENERAL question.... have any of SFF mods been in chat in the last 48 hours?

@Bellerophon yes

2:59 PM
Although is the month day thing the wrong way around

@Edlothiad I'd say 6 but yes
around htat

@Skooba Null and Kevin have been around

wrong person
:p

@Skooba they've been pretty hard to catch for a while now

@Edlothiad MM/DD/YY

2:59 PM
@Riker No it isn't ^.^
@Skooba DD/MM/YY or YY/MM/DD

MY/DM/YD

@Edlothiad tha'ts the 6th floof in a row I think

@Edlothiad psh the only time is use YYYY/MM/DD is when I am naming files

I had 4 before that, but I missed a couple days

@Skooba Should be any time the date can be used as data

3:01 PM
@Edlothiad I've been debating that
not sure what format to use

when people who use the DD/MM/YY system.... how do you actually say the day.... Ex. Would say "Today is May 13th" or " Today is the 13th of May"

#1

when speaking out loud afaik everyone says Month Day-th

@Skooba I use either.

@Edlothiad 29th, 1st, 2nd, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and now 13th
@Bellerophon yes the last 4 or so have been pinned

3:02 PM
@Riker but your an American right?

yes

then you dont use DD/MM you use MM/DD

ah, didn't see that part of your msg
sorry

@Ixrec that how I justify the American use of the MM/DD system in my head lol
the only time I use the second example is when I am remembering he 5th of November.....

@Riker I meant the pinned ones

3:04 PM
I say 13th of May quite a lot.

@Edlothiad ah, yea the last 4/5

@Skooba Speaking of that anyone able to explain how the heck we as a species let . and , get so out of control for expressing numbers?

Or most of the time just 13th May because saying 'of' takes way too long.

@Ixrec What I always say 13th of May

3:05 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya Blame Europe.

user132126
I always say "On this the thirteenth day of the fifth month in the year of our Ford two thousand and seventeen"

Our Ford?

@EnigmaMaitreya as a programmer, the real problem here is that now there's no way no matter how magical we make our code to correctly guess what you as the user wanted your number to mean

user132126
@Bellerophon Brave New World reference

because basically every punctuation mark has perfectly opposite meanings depending on country

3:06 PM
@Ixrec being a programmer I agree :)

@Riker Because Britain had to be different, as always
@Bellerophon 07/15/13

@Edlothiad What does the US use?

@Edlothiad This is a Schroedinger's date. Both a real and imaginary date at the same time!

@CreationEdge I take it you're on American servers?

MM/DD/YY

3:08 PM
as a USer living in the UK, I simply refuse to use any slashes-and-digits format for dates anymore
May is always May, not 05, or else ambiguity is inevitable

but what if my May is your August?

user132126
@Gallifreyan Yeah

I just use ISO 8601

@Ixrec Or simply insist on YYYY to avoid the issue

much easier
2017-05-13

3:09 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya that only helps with the year, not month v date
but I do 4-digit years too

@Ixrec Concede

user132126
@ArtOfCode I use that for anything on the computer, yeah.

according to xkcd, @ArtOfCode is objectively technically correct

user132126
Trying to reliabre sort filenames with dates is impossible otherwise

@Edlothiad I believe that DD/MM/YYYY is Britain being normal for once. Europe definitely uses it.

3:10 PM
@Ixrec Oh, absolutely YYYY-MM-DD always and forever

@Bellerophon I meant the worlds whole number system

user132126
Although perhaps I should start talking about time as ms from epoch

no, please god no

I'm going to start using how many days it's been since December 21st

user132126
Or Excel date codes

3:12 PM
@Edlothiad Which year?

user132126
@Edlothiad Your birthday?

user132126
@Bellerophon Every year

@Bellerophon Every year
@CreationEdge The winter solstice

user132126
Hahaha

it's the fourteenty-third day of the Ed-year
Happy Fourteenty-Third day everybody!
Hey @steelersquirrel!

user132126
3:14 PM
"It's been one day, 366 days, 731 days, 1097 days since Dec 21st"

Bye @steelersquirrel!
You didn't forget leap years

user132126
Nope

@CreationEdge Well met!

But you would think with the Internet being world wide and all, that we as a species could just agree on a common date, time and number format. Sheesh if we can not agree on something so fundamentally simple then what does that say about our future?

well, we did agree on one for all technical purposes: ISO 8601
most non-technical people just don't care about standardizing "their" date format

3:18 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya Every number is agreed upon, it's left to the stubbornness of individuals to give up their "old ways" and accept the adopted figure.

@Ixrec Yeah I meant to acknowledge that with @ArtOfCode and got lost in the messages.
@Edlothiad Oh not being argumentative but what way is that? I had to support European, UK, South African, SEAsia, China, Korean, Japanese, and many more on that subject and pretty much force the customer to accept 0.00 formats

user132126
@EnigmaMaitreya We can't even agree on measuring dintances

user132126
I say we measure it knuckles

the app I maintain allows the user to format numbers with either a . or a , for the decimal point...but when the user enters custom data themselves, we just have to blindly guess whether 1.2 is twelve or one point two (for now . is always the decimal point)

user132126
Ever use moment.js?

3:22 PM
yes

@CreationEdge Blame those that changed the length of a Meter to be based on the Speed of Light vs an ISO

we're still using that to format a small subset of our user-facing datetimes

@EnigmaMaitreya Standard International

user132126
@EnigmaMaitreya Isn't it better for measurements to be based on universal constants?

@CreationEdge c isn't an accepted constant though, in the sense that it isn't 100% accurate

user132126
3:25 PM
Like one second is the half life of some isotope

@Edlothiad :) Yes but it was not always that and there was an ISO defined. Plus, in all honestly I do not want to get into that entire discussion we had that over on World Building :)

@Edlothiad what
first I've heard of that

@ArtOfCode Sorry, I clarified

@Edlothiad in what way is it not accurate that doesn't also apply to all other numbers?

@CreationEdge C vs the Speed of light are not the same thing and as I said to @Edlothiad We had this discussion on World Building and I personally have no interest in pursuing it :)

3:26 PM
2.997x10^8

user132126
@Edlothiad I think that it's defined as the distance light travels at a certain location in the time it takes for some isotopes half-life, idk

@Ixrec Because it's an estimate, whereas most other numbers can be measured?

all measurements are estimates?
like, by definition?

user132126
Not my IQ

you could measure c now, anyway - slow motion video

user132126
3:29 PM
It's 9001

@ArtOfCode Are you aware they have stopped a Photon?

user132126
That's right, it's over nine thousand

user132126
@EnigmaMaitreya For speeding?

@Ixrec To a different extent to the speed of light though

@EnigmaMaitreya stopped like how?

3:30 PM
@CreationEdge No in a BEC
@ArtOfCode Literal sense stopped it cold so to say :)

Scrap things i've said. The speed of light has been considered a fundamental unit since 198-something
I question my education

user132126
I think I read that on Wikipedia years ago

I can't remember whether I got that from school or some book I read but I think that was my impression ever since I learned that the speed of light was "special"

I'd always been told since people are trying to find out better ways to measure it it's inacurate

user132126
3:44 PM
It's probably less precise than it is inaccurate

user132126
But we measure it affected(?) by gravity and not in a true vacuum

time to find out if the new Alien movie's any good
cya

@CreationEdge Seeing that out of context on the starboard... I want to say " Yes, I am deeply offended by Dutch, please don't speak Dutch around me" :P

@Ixrec Feedback please :)

user132126
3:49 PM
Those scenes. Funny

user132126
Was movie night canceled or just postponed?

Good morning. I'm dropping by to say later again. It was great getting to interact and know a bunch of you, but some of the goings on here are driving me nuts.

@CreationEdge Why are you asking that? Did I miss something?

@CreationEdge still on i thought

user132126
Oh, it's tonight. Thought yesterday

3:52 PM
@MajorStackings What sort of things?

hello all

o/

user132126
Hey oh

user132126
@Riker Is that a waving emoticon?

yes

no
