I've asked for the Furigana engine to be updated to the new version with the changes at meta.japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/1495
I've also asked about whether it can be added to mobile, hopefully it can
After it gets updated, please tell me if you have any issues with it, here (in chat) or on meta. thanks

can anyone recommend me a good textbook for my friend and I to use as we study Japanese? We're both at kind of beginner-intermediate level; we have hiragana/katakana and about 200 kanji learned, along with a lot of the basic grammar. Any good books that you guys have used?

Some of our users, like @gibbon, recommended Genki in the past. I think Genki is pretty popular, although it's probably designed to be used in a classroom rather than for self-study.

(But I don't know that much about textbooks, to be honest!)

We have a list of textbooks maintained by the community, but I can't vouch for any of them: meta.japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/756/…

Oded's responded to my query regarding adding the script to the mobile site, looks like it could be complicated
@cypher - is the script in the same pastebin? If so, it still has debug enabled. In regards to the mobile site - I am not sure we can do this, as the mechanism we use for the script is used in several sites (for other custom scripts) - and is not used in the mobile theme at all. It may have implications on those sites. I will have to discuss internally before. — Oded ♦ 13 mins ago

12:50 PM
@cypher how can I test out your script on my phone?

The way which I've been using for Android/Chrome is connecting via USB debug, using "inspect devices" and pasting it into the console each time the page reloads
I don't know there is any other way, as Android/Chrome doesn't support userscripts AFAIK
looks like it might be possible with Android/Firefox to use userscripts more permanently (softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/14174), but I haven't tried

@cypher i see... incidentally i'm using iphone

I know virtually nothing about iPhones :P

1:16 PM
I don't actually have anything against iPhones, I just haven't really used one for any extended period
I hope it will work on iPhone/iPad, as I haven't tested
(or even know where I'd start finding one I could use with debugging enabled)

@cypher of course, I'm not blaming you, I just found a laughable picture :)
to be honest I miss Android so much since I started to use iPhone
(an iPhone 6 that was sold at a loss, you know)
I hope I can find something to cope with the iphone from my windows...

@cypher - script updated and also added to mobile versions. — Oded ♦ 16 mins ago
great, have to check it works on ipad/iphone later but better get some shuteye for now

A: Transitioning to Japanese kanji from Chinese

chaimedesIf you're familiar with the Japanese spoken language, one approach you can take is to rectify each kanji you read with a familiar word that it appears in. For example, if you see the kanji 手 and you naturally want to pronounce it "zu" instead of "te," recall that you know that same kanji from t...

I don't speak Chinese, so I don't have the problem Chinese speakers have of mixing up readings, but I like this answer. I think it looks different from most other "study method" questions that have been closed in the past.

Q: Should we expand the 'asking for learning resources' close reason to include methods?

SjiveruWe seem to get a lot of questions asking 'how should I go about learning this thing?'. (Learning Japanese alphabet and Transitioning to Japanese kanji from Chinese are two recent examples.) At the moment, there's only two close reasons we can use for them: Off topic because we don't provide le...

@cypher Almost works perfectly on iPhone. It seems like characters which have furigana end up slightly larger than characters which don't, but otherwise it looks correct.
Hmm, I think "small" + "moderate lightness" + "shrink in moderation" is my favorite view combination.

I see what you mean - interestingly your answer, which I added {{pad}} to, has the Furigana much larger than other Furigana for some reason

@cypher Everything I've tested works fine on mobile :-) I'm really happy we have furigana everywhere now!

Ah, I see. It's the {{pad}} feature that makes kanji larger than normal when they have furigana.

11:35 PM
Oh, hah, didn't think to check other answers. {{pad}} doesn't seem to have that problem on my browser (Chrome Linux) though.
