@Daniel: Hmm... sorry, not entirely sure what you're asking about. Can you give an example of what you're looking for?

No worries, found what I was looking for
By the way, I was wondering
I was reading yesterday a graded book and I came across the following:
太郎にはもううちがありません。
太郎 is the main character
The context is, the main character arrives to his hometown after 100 years and his house and family are all gone
I don't understand the use of には
に is used for the location in which it happens, right?
Does it mean 'In the place where 太郎
'In the place where 太郎 is standing'?

Xeo
「には」 is not a simple combination of に+は, afaik

What's the use in this context?

Xeo
and に is also not only used for locations
@Daniel singling him out / emphasis, I'd guess. Not sure.
Seems to be fitting here.
> When you use いる or ある to express possession, the topic is marked with には
Seems to be an optional thing to say には instead of just は

To me, に marks an abstract location/target/object in space, time, etc. "go to tTokyo", "to/for Tarou, there is no home". With that thought in mind, a sentence such as 高橋さんにできる事はなんだと思いますか makes sense to my mind as well: something that can be done by Takahashi; or "to Takahashi, something that he can do". Also, 太郎には…ありません emphasizes that Tarou is affected by this, compared to 太郎は…ありません (and it sounds much better as well).

@Daniel It's like 私には友達がいます= For me, there're friends = I have friends
