In Japanese language, there is a word オノマトペ which is a loanword from French onomatopée. オノマトペ includes both 擬声語 and 擬態語 in general, and Japanese dictionaries define オノマトペ as so, like these.
So, to me (by the way, my native language is Japanese.), it's natural that the onomatopoeia tag coves 擬態語. I worried how native English speakers feel about onomatopoeia including 擬態語, but now I see that the worry is not necessary. I agree with that technical terms wouldn't be very helpful in this case.
