@jkerian Why does これで have は with it? Is this a compound particle or something?

Q: What is じゃ in じゃない?

herbySince there is possibility of "じゃありません" instead of "じゃないです" (which is logical, given "ありません" is polite "ない"), and it also seemed that I have seen "じゃ" used without "ない", I'd like to ask, what "じゃ" exactly means? It looks like some kind of particle which was used in old Japanese but is not used an...

note that in this case, it's actually the で that's kindof optional. It's a simple elliptical construction 'as for X', 'これは。。。'

@jkerian Ah I see. Thank you. As a related question, I have a hard time grasping whether これ or それ is more appropriate for non-physical locations. Kinda like "Because of this?/that? effect..."
Gah, I'm having a hard time explaining myself.

@LucasTizma I've been wondering about the same thing

If you watch this short clip, you'll hear what I'm talking about: cld.tiz.ma/3a0n3M121118 The one guy says something like 「しまった!これじゃ、オフサイド・トラップが使えない!」Why is これ used instead of それ?
I kinda took it that he means "Because you did that..." But maybe I'm misinterpreting it.

@Mechanicalsnail It's a little hard to read sometimes, but you can always use the question timeline to count votes without the vote splitting privilege
Proof it shows downvotes: japanese.stackexchange.com/posts/6898/timeline though it's a pita to constantly be manually typing that link, I don't think it's linked from anywhere

@LucasTizma Because the incident (これ) which blocked "offside trap" is happening immediately about/to him. A supporter in the stands may use "それじゃ" (physical distance). A supporter of the opponent may use "あれじゃ" (physical + psychological distance).

@ento Thanks for that explanation. :)
Earlier I was trying to grasp why これ では/じゃ is necessary in this case instead of simply これは.
But it was late last night, so my mind was probably in stupid mode. :)

Q: Is accent position predictable for -i verbs in Osaka/Kansai?

Mechanical snailBackground While I'm not especially confident about the reliability of my sources (Wikipedia (0) (1) (2) and some guys' personal websites), and it's possible that I transcribed some of these wrong, the sources agree on the following accent rules for -i verbs: The few bi-moraic ones are all un...
