1:57 AM
Hi! :)

8 hours later…
10:23 AM
Anyone here using AWS IoT, MQTT over WebSockets?

2 hours later…
11:58 AM
Kinda

Great! How is your experience?

From my level of perspective? It works.
Would have to speak with the devs for more details

okay :)

We seem to have a very slow Monday so far on the site

yeah

12:05 PM
Area51 stats are down to 118 visitors a day

:(

I guess, we get more traffic after 2-3 hours from now.

Yeah, I think we actually produced an ok amount of content over the weekend for a private beta
So hopefully there'll be some activity based on that
They got out of private beta
Based on that we shouldn't be to worried

yep!
BTW, the guy who proposed this SE area51.stackexchange.com/users/147139/dilip-kumar-yadav isn't here
or is he in disguise?

12:22 PM
Dilip Kumar Yadav, Mumbai, India
101 6

Yep, I just saw that. I mean he isn't in this chat room.

Not sure why he has the teacher badge and yet no questions or answers in his profile
Maybe he it was an answer, one up vote, a few down votes and then a delete

Post deleted or otherwise

Might have been that plagiarizing thing

unavailable

12:25 PM
I think he answered the plane question
That question is gone though
Not sure why, though
It had several answers so, nobody could have deleted the site alone

May be Airport Authority thought we are encouraging users to use internet on planes and taken it down :P

Hm, the SE staff seemingly hasn't been around the site today. There are still tag edits of mine in review.
The system will automatically delete any question (and its answers) or answer with a negative score when its owner’s account is deleted.

@Helmar yepp, it was

I made a meta post about the question. I think it was a good example for a question that's just out of scope.

Q: Where's the question about monitoring IoT devices from a plane?

HelmarHas the question about monitoring IoT devices on plane been auto-deleted? The system will automatically delete any question (and its answers) or answer with a negative score when its owner’s account is deleted. So I know the user got deleted, I don't know it's score, but it was closed so guess ...

Maybe the SE devs are investing in AA weaponry
@bravokeyl About Dilip, It was the plagiarizing thing. He wrote an answer and it got deleted... And then he made another account and posted another plagiarism... and both got deleted

Beautifull

1 hour later…
2:50 PM
@Helmar which is the original question, now that it is restored?

6
A: Could IoT devices be monitored (real time) while on a plane?

JohnSome airlines provide in-flight wireless connectivity, usually for a fee. You can use WiFi in "Airplane Mode" on most mobile devices, so that would let you connect to a monitoring server to retrieve the status of your devices, but you would still be unable to monitor your devices during taxi/take...

thanks

@HenryWHHackv2.0 No
Is this a friendly no or a no no?^

@HenryWHHackv2.0 I don't know Journeyman Geek all that well, but from what I do know, I'm guessing it's a "friendly" no.
Meaning, he's not interested, but didn't mind being asked.
But, like I said, I don't know him very well, and I could be wrong.

The only thing I know about The Great Journeyman Geek is: Loading......................
Still Loading..................

3:37 PM
Oh noes, my unspoiler add-on was just triggered on iot for a Game of Thrones spoiler.
Who allowed this user name: Danya02 ?

@Helmar please be welcoming... no matter the user's name ;)

Yeah, that's why I de-activated my auto-downvoting addon for people with spoilery names ;)

good call

A: Making a smart light switch

Bence KaulicsIf you want a totally independent switch in case of the microcontroller fails, then you can hook-up an XOR gate for two inputs. The relay will be off when both inputs are the same, and on if the inputs are different. The two inputs are: Regular switch for manual control. Output from an MCU for ...

Planned out circuit and link to a simulator, that's great
I want to double up vote

@Helmar there's an in-built schematics editor and simulator on SE
well, actually it's not in-built but external

3:45 PM
@Ghanima Oh, I did not know that

it's active on EE and RPi, but you only get it after making a case for it

But my main SE before was English, not much use there ;)

@Helmar probably not ;)

I mean there are certainly people who try to approach words the same way as natural sciences, but that mostly ends in tears and blood.

it's not working like this?

3:50 PM
If a steel bridge is made of steel, then surely dog biscuits are made of ... ;)
Language is just annoyingly illogical

4:03 PM
@Helmar ... are they not?

5:03 PM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 that was a test to make sure that you could actually register without having to commit

I didn't want to share a link to IoT and then it doesn't even work :P
Don't worry, there's going to be no suspicious voting (although I did get a lot of rep since I was last on... hmm)

@Aurora0001 we'll be watching you!

Like a MOD!^

To be honest I may as well delete it
Or maybe not..
I can't even log into it
because I used a disposable email and didn't save the address anywhere

5:07 PM
Like 10minutemail?

yeah, exactly that

5:21 PM
Also everyone, we will need quite a few questions to get us up to the 10 per day today

your newest meta post
I think the question differs from the title, slightly

@Ghanima do you think I should move out my opinions into an answer instead?

no, that's fine (with me)

1
Q: Are questions about software/hardware primarily related to the Internet of Things on-topic?

Aurora0001I recently asked a question about a technical feature of Ubuntu Core (and specifically its package manager, Snappy). Some users voted to close this, so I think we should start a bigger discussion about whether these questions are fundamentally on/off-topic to help define the scope of the site. A...

Why can I see the review link on my area51.meta account but can't do any reviewing task?

5:32 PM
No idea, I only have 150 rep on area 51 :P
Perhaps ask on their meta?
Mind you, I can't imagine reviewing on Area 51 is terribly interesting

@Aurora0001 yes, lets VTC that chat post ;) VTC and migrate that is
2

To me it's cool but strange.
Maybe Area51 is a cover up for something even more secret: Area 52!

probably, but I cannot comment on that ;)

Anyone who does comment tends to disappear into the wilderness of Stack Exchange

5:51 PM
Area51 is weird anyways
Meta is just a tag

6:16 PM
Here is one of my crazy SE conspiracy theories: All of the Stack Exchange moderators are just one guy with multiple accounts on different SE sites.

Ever wonder why you never see two Mods in the same room at the same time That's why^

@HenryWHHackv2.0 those figures don't apply today though
3 questions, don't know how many visits
seems like more than yesterday though

The visits don't, the rest seems to be updated more frequently

6:48 PM
@Helmar looks like you got the 1k tools recently, congratulations!

Woohoo
hm, suggested edits jumped to 8
But it's empty when I click it

Probably caching
Maybe some of them are your tag wiki edits if they weren't approved?
I know mine are stuck because no-one except you (and Robert Cartaino) can approve them

But I'd need 2k for unapproved tag wiki editing

Yeah, I know, it's a pain really that it's set so high
Don't really know why they did it
Maybe because no-one reads tag wikis
2
so vandalism wouldn't get spotted

Maybe
Ok, doesn't seem to be caching
Completely reloaded everything

7:00 PM
Maybe it's a bug

Maybe it just doesn't update regularly.

I'm not seeing the issue but it's probably some sort of weird quirk of the system

Try clearing your browser cache or something, it could be an error with your computer

Deleted all browser data but it's still there.
Last time it vanished after I had another actual suggested edit to review
That was when I got tag wiki editing privileges
Probably that's the same
Even though I don't think I have edited 8 tag wikis over the weekend

Could anyone without edit privileges check the suggested edit queue to see how many are in there maybe?
If there are 8 things to edit there, that's probably the reason

7:08 PM
Eh, without that privilege they don't see that queue

I think you can see it can't you?
Isn't it just shaded out?

So my guess it's 3-4 tag wikis from me and 3-5 suggested tag wiki edits I voted on

iot.stackexchange.com/review is where I meant you can see it

Ah ok
Sure, you can see it but not access it

yeah, so you could see the number
Probably doesn't matter that much anyway

7:11 PM
No, as I said it'll likely disappear with the next genuine possible edit
It did at 750

@Aurora0001 gimme just twenty more upvotes (or so, could be more) and I will do just that ;)

:D
But that's perfect, if you go on /review what's the number on suggested edits?

@Ghanima let me just create Aurora0003 and Aurora0004 first! :D

yeah, go ahead, be my guest ;)

Warning: this site is currently in private beta for at least 14 more days.
That's what it says when I went onto iot.se without login and no browser cache

7:17 PM
Well, it is a private beta :P

I know
It was the at least 14 more days part I was wondering about
I didn't think private beta would go so long
That's three weeks

Q: Where can we get more Subject Matter Experts?

GhanimaWhere - and related: how - can we get more experts to join this site either now during private beta or later during open beta? We have to face it, IoT is a very wide field and contains myriads of different physical devices, technologies, protocolls, systems, and so on. It is therefore imperative...

I know, I was concerned about that before
If it ends exactly in 14 days, it will be a terrible launch day
26th December...
Also @Ghanima your meta post is almost exactly what I was thinking about the other day, +1
I've done my bit though:
Seems to have between 5 and 8 upvotes (Reddit fuzz the votes slightly so they're not exact like Stack Exchange votes)
Hi @Azarus

Idk, 26th December is when everyone tries to use the new home automation stuff :D
2
That could be a lot of questions ;)

hi

7:23 PM
Hi @Azarus

@Helmar very good point! Better get some questions ready for "how do I set up ...?" :P

Just looking for an opengl expert :P
i just saw that so has chat :o awesome :D

@Azarus probably won't have much luck here; this is Internet of Things Stack Exchange

yeah i am just exploring this chat right now

SO is probably your best bet

7:24 PM
didn't see this feature
i already asked my question but not much luck either :(

If you have an IoT question you're in the right place, though ;)

@Azarus this one?
1
Q: What methods exist to implement a 2D looping world?

AzarusI would like to know what other methods exist to implement a 2D wrapping world. I know the simple modulo solution (ObjectPosition % MapSize) but that doesn't really fulfills my requirements. My issue with this easy solution that it only works on points and not on objects. I was trying to clone ...

yeah

You got a couple of answers, might be worth just commenting there and asking for clarification

An IoT question would be: how do i install internet?

right? :D

7:26 PM
@Azarus not quite :P

Well if you want to install internet on a thing, sure ;)

If you have any "smart" devices though you can ask about those

reading the wiki page, it sounds like its about networking and hardware stuff :3

@Helmar in between eating and family stuff?

Smart TVs, internet-connected sensors, anything like that

7:28 PM
i see

Especially if the smart devices behave unbelievably dumb

Also stuff like smart assistants (e.g. Alexa) is on-topic here
Maybe soon we'll be answering questions about smart toasters and the like

@Ghanima Exactly, it's like eating, getting slowly annoyed about hanging around with family too much across a few days and then getting annoyed when Alexa is trolling you ;)

@Helmar the resulting question might not get highly upvoted (rants)

@Ghanima yeah, that's might be

:-D

Apparently many comments means closure
So if anyone comments on your post, run for the hills

they're coming from the hills!
2

Dang!

Run away from the hills! Run away from the hills! If you see the hills, go the other way!

8:05 PM
I'm very close to getting my Marshal Badge on Ask Ubuntu! :)
2
Why was that starred?^

Why shouldn't it be starred?
2
:P
Gold badge = gold star from me
Are most of those from flagging to close?

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Congrats!

@anonymous2 Not Yet

9:08 PM
@Aurora0001
@delicateLatticeworkFever do you want to wrap that up into an answer? I think that's the main point - there aren't that many HAM radio operators around I suppose! — Aurora0001 3 hours ago
-> Sure. May take me a day or so to get to it though.
I won't claim to be a particular expert but I did have to skim a bit of the (hundreds of pages long) IEEE 802.11 spec last year. They do some pretty intense things with radio waves O_O

Welcome @goldilocks

9:31 PM
Ah yes Goldilocks and the three bears.

@Ghanima Oh yeah, my network name is in here vs. my S.O. name is on the site. @Aurora0001 If there's any confusion, I am delicateLatticeworkFever!
Very delicate and often feverish @Ghanima ...Still not sure what I was thinking with that one. Many complex things.

@goldilocks my working hypothesis was always: nuts

9:52 PM
:\

positive way, you know, like that airborne general to the Nazi commander

Howard Hughes? Or the other one?

General Anthony Clement "Nuts" McAuliffe (July 2, 1898 – August 11, 1975) was a senior United States Army officer, who earned fame as the acting commander of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division troops defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge towards the end of World War II. After the battle, McAuliffe was promoted and given command of the 103rd Infantry Division, which he led from January 1945 to July 1945. In the post-war era, he was commander of U.S. forces in the American sector of Germany. == History == McAuliffe was born in Washington, D.C., on July 2, 1898. He attended West...

I like how his official nickname there is actually "Old Crock". Or maybe it is the other way around: "Hey Ol' Crock!" "That's Nuts to you son...."
Great story tho.

you might want to introduce jacob to the "ol' crock' story, I bet he'll like that
or maybe I just change your username, I think I have one change free ;)

10:09 PM
Then I just need to get him into a bear suit with the head tucked under that arm and I have a refreshing new avatar.

1 hour later…
11:35 PM
can someone help me out a bit with my i7 4790k? :D
i have overheating issues, thermal throtling stops it to overheat but its ticking on when coompiling a lagerger project with visual studio 100* :/
i tried to put on a fresh pasta but it didn't help too much
maybe i need a new cooler?
