Q: Adding image from web blocking jpeg

chiliNUTI wanted to add an image to a post, I chose the "provide a link from the web" option, and it gave me "Failed to upload image; the format is not supported". That would make sense if I was trying to upload some strange format, but it was just a plain old jpeg, namely "http://taniwha.web.fc2.com/MTG...

@murgatroid99 Oh, cool. So you're now duplicating a Malignus that is still tracking its P/T from its owner's perspective.

Right, because it's a Characteristic Defining Ability

@murgatroid99 So Instant Enchantment -- Aura and such, huh? I can grok that.

Yeah, and then you have just one type of non-permanent spell

Instant Legendary Creature -- Human Soldier makes for a pretty crowded type line. :D
@murgatroid99 Oooh. So instead of having Sorcery and Instant, you get Spell and Instant Spell.

@doppelgreener Well, I'd probably still call it Sorcery
But you have Sorcery and Instant Sorcery
It also means that you have one rule that says "All spells can be cast whenever you have priority and the stack is empty during your main phase" and another that says "Spells with the instant supertype can be cast whenever you have priority"

5:19 AM
Nice.
and all those red-blue triggered abilities now just say "Whenever you cast a sorcery spell".

And "whenever you could cast an instant" wouldn't even have to change.

5:36 AM
What's the reason for not switching over? Such a huge vocab change old cards would become hard to parse, I can imagine being one.

It would require huge amounts of errata, especially for cards that just say "sorcery" or just say "instant"
Playing with old card and new ones together could get really confusing

5:52 AM
Yeah. D':
Well, lessons for magic 2.0. (*will probably not exist for decades if at all and that's fine)

Do we have a pre-existing question asking about whether additional costs can be paid when a spell is cast for free? I could've sworn we did, and this would be a duplicate of it.

Q: Can an imprinted spell be kicked when it is cast?

FroggizCan an imprinted spell be kicked when it is cast ? For example : Isochron Scepter and Orim's Chant Can I pay the kicker cost each time I activate Isochron Scepter?

1:03 PM
hmm :|
looks like we need a canonical question on the matter

@doppelgreener If a non-permanent spell is now a spell, is summoning a creature a spell?

@JonTheMon as murgatroid corrected me on, you'd need to still call them something like a Sorcery.
I didn't think of the generic meaning of "spell" earlier.

Ah, missed that. That's a good compromise, I think.

@doppelgreener I think the newest question could be reworded slightly and it would work. Maybe change the title to 'How does casting a spell for free interact with additional costs?'

I agree. He knows the terminology "additional costs" which already makes it a decent dupe target
I guess it isn't really "canonical"
I just realized I never knew what that words means until right now lol
adjective
1.
according to or ordered by canon law.
"the canonical rites of the Roman Church"
2.
included in the list of sacred books officially accepted as genuine.
"the canonical Gospels of the New Testament"
noun
1.
the prescribed official dress of the clergy.
None of those look like how we use it

1:10 PM
I made a call to action for this on meta in the meantime that'll crop up in the feed soon.

@Rainbolt We use it in the "accepted as being accurate and authoritative." sense that you get if you click the arrow on Google for more definitions

Ah, okay

yeah, like, these two questions aren't dupes of each other because they're tackling exactly the same issue from two radically different angles. but they would both be duplicates of a question that just tackles that issue in its essence: when you cast a spell for free, yes you can pay additional costs.
(and on the flipside covered in this question: if you must cast a spell that has additional costs, must you pay those costs? - no.)

Q: Canonical question request: "Can I pay extra costs when casting a spell without paying its mana cost?"

doppelgreenerWe have a couple of questions that are just variations on the theme of paying additional costs on a spell being cast for free: Hideaway Lands and Additional Costs Can an imprinted spell be kicked when it is cast? I'm not aware of a canonical question on the matter, but we should probably have...

1:42 PM

Would it be better than [mtg:Vryn Wingmare]?

First strike is more relevant than flying I think; I just dunno how its' ability compares

Tapped vs tax?

Yep

I think Old Thalia into Vryn is more crippling than old Thalia into new Thalia

1:46 PM
Better against Drazi, D&T mirror, goblins, and other creature based decks

So, sideboard card to take your taxing into a different direction, esp. against creature decks?
and new Thalia is also asymetric

Potentially, and yeah.
Of course this one would only be in monowhite D&T

Why only in mono-white?

Ahh, maybe not, but isn't fetchable by recruiter, and that deck is already pushed for slots

2:05 PM
@JonTheMon I wish auto card worked in here
I want to post on meta with two questions. Is there an existing auto card browser extension? If not, can autocard be implemented such that it is a "native" part of the board and card games chat?
Do I make one post or two posts?

Seems like 1 question: How do I get autocard in chat? Do I use an existing, or create a new?

2:23 PM
After writing the post I realized I really want something natively implemented, not a browser extension
So I just went with one question

@Rainbolt I know there is (or at least was) a browser extension that would autocard any text on a page that was a Magic card (even if the site wasn't magic related)

Q: Can we have AutoCard for the site chat?

RainboltCan the existing AutoCard feature be made available for the Board and Card Games chat? We discuss cards in that room all the time. Constantly opening new tabs to get links for the cards we are talking about is tedious. Honestly, I think the feature would get more use in the chat than it does on...

1 hour later…
3:33 PM
@Rainbolt I wouldn't expect something anytime soon. Development on chat has generally been pretty low priority, and our site hasn't been getting much development work either
We haven't even gotten the existing Autocard bugs fixed

Q: Some autocard names don't execute correctly

Alex P[mtg:Grafdigger's Cage] fails to find any cards (Try it: Grafdigger's Cage). I've double-checked it a few times. I think it's something about the ' in the card name. (This is very minor) [mtg:Sun Titan] takes you a search page with Sun Titan and Sundering Titan. (Try it: Sun Titan) I'm not sure...

I have no expectations. I only know that I want it, and the best way to get it is to ask for it.
The second best way is to do it myself, but it doesn't sound like a fun project to me. In general, browser extensions written in JavaScript don't sound like fun projects to me.
Anyway, since you read the proposal and didn't upvote it, I assume you don't want the feature (or don't care)?

I just didn't vote

Ah. Sorry for rushing you. I am impatient when it comes to meta requests.

4:19 PM
I think I now understand why we haven't fixed our autocard stuff
We currently search for the entire card name together
But there's a bug in gatherer search, and apostrophes simply don't work in a multi-word search

Our search could simply exclude apostrophes and everything after the apostrophe up until the next space
So "Rainbolt's Card" becomes "Rainbolt Card"

It doesn't actually work. I think it used to

That's weird. I could have sworn I saw people using that hack on main

e.g. a search for "sphinx revelation" gives nothing
What gatherer does to generate URLs is separately search for each word. So if you type in "sphinx's revelation", it searches for [sphinx's]+[revelation]

4:25 PM
That works, but it also gives more spurious results

Looks like it works to me
I deleted the post since both of us can still see it right?

Sphinx Revelation works too

But I think that actually does what I just said. It separates the words
There may be another bug with how we're encoding apostrophes

My point is that it needs to do exactly what it does now, except ignore apostrophes and subsequent characters until it encounters a space

4:28 PM
And my point is that it's failing because it's searching for [runners]+[bane], not [runner's]+[bane]
Because we're sending the server "runner's+bane", without any brackets

Okay, there are two equally valid methods of fixing it I guess

@Rainbolt Do you mind if I edit that post to try another way of doing it?

Go for it
It's a sandbox that nobody can see except a few users

I SEE YOU
Carry on.

OK, it's basically a combination of issues. If you don't use any square brackets, their redirect breaks apostrophes. If you put square brackets around the whole name, there's no redirect, but the server doesn't like it anyway. If you put square brackets around each word, the search works, but some searches have additional spurious results.

4:32 PM
cardName.replace("'s", "");

i.e. a search for "runner's bane" redirects to "runners bane". A search for "[runner's bane]" just fails, and a search for "[runner's]+[bane]" works. On the other hand "sun titan" and "[sun titan]" both bring you directly to the card, but "[sun]+[titan]" also gives you Sundering Titan

Well now I'm confused. Which method does our site use?

Our site uses the first one

So "runner's bane" redirects to "runners bane"?

Or "[runners]+[bane]"
something like that

4:36 PM
Ok

And I have a game to get to

Each word in brackets, no apostrophes

2 hours later…
That whole set has some weird cards
It's also the set that Blood Moon comes from

7:23 PM
My friend used some Magic Set Editor program to make a bunch of cards, and I don't want to download it to view them. Is there another way for me to view his exported gibberish file?

8:05 PM
What does the file format look like?

1 hour later…
9:26 PM
Thats the link he sent me

It looks like that's probably base64-encoded binary data

9:57 PM
It's a base64-encoded zip file
With the encoded text split into 76 character lines for some reason
