Reyhan is the most baller Abzan commander I've ever seen. Seriously, look at this guy!
He has Partner, enters with three +1/+1 counters, and has:
> Whenever a creature you control dies or is put into the command zone, if it had one or more +1/+1 counters on it, you may put that many +1/+1 counters on target creature.
which is a mechanical way of saying:
> Yeah you get to keep all those counters you've got, just as long as you have someone new to put them on.

That doesn't seem really silly in Ghave at all...

Step 1, Reyhan. Step 2 Thief of Blood. Step 3, ???? Step 4 Profit
(Actually might want to do step 2 before 1)

@JonTheMon haha, good catch there
or Aetherborn Marauder, though Thief of Blood is the same turned up to 11.

Yeah. Both can be exiled, but at least Thief took from opponents too

I'm going to switch my Abzan deck from having Ghave as a commander, to using Reyhan and any of the other related options (the WG commander, either of the WB commanders, or maybe I'll use the other BG commander and go two-color). There's already enough ways for creatures I play to get +1/+1 counters that I wasn't confident in Ghave being all that necessary or helpful, though the tokens are nice.
If any of those three unrevealed partners (either WB, or the other BG) generates tokens, that'll be a slam dunk for migrating +1/+1 counters.
or I can rely on certain enchantments/artifacts to generate tokens for me instead to soak up the counters and keep them alive.

1:23 PM
Don't forget about the new Module. that generates a token for 1 when you add +1/+1 counters
(afk meeting)

I just realised what the modules do together...
Decoction Module: When a creature ETB, you get {E}.
Fabrication Module: When you get {E}, you can put a +1/+1 on a creature.
Animation Module: When something gets a +1/+1 counter, you can pay {1} and create a token.
(return to step 1)

Haha that flavor text
I like it

1:45 PM
@doppelgreener Mirrodin had similar combo. Four-parts, I believe.

@Rainbolt I didn't even see that flavour text on those modules. That's lovely.

2:03 PM
Do the WotC MTG articles get published at a consistent time each day..?

2:37 PM
@doppelgreener They are usually up around 8am Pacific Time (GMT -8 I think), occasionally they are up early though
So about another 23 minutes from now

@diego thanks!

2 hours later…
4:41 PM
Huh, so it's like Servant of the Scale for all creatures. Does that mean Servant gives counters twice?

4:51 PM
Hmmm, looks like I might need to pick up not-black and not-red from the new commander decks
I've been wanting to build a +1/+1 counters deck, but not Ghave

5:17 PM
@JonTheMon I think so, yes, wow.

It also doubles the counters from Modular

Hardened Scales will be a must-have for this deck. I'm hoping they'll put either that or something like it into the Atraxa (Growth, counters, tokens) deck (magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/card-preview/…)

Why not just go straight for Primal Vigor or Doubling Season?
Doubling Season goes especially well in Atraxa because Proliferate works with every kind of counter.

@murgatroid99 ... I guess I mentally filtered those out, but both of those would be beautiful.
I'll be stunned if the Atraxa deck reprints Doubling Season.

Yeah, I don't think that's going to happen. It's just too stupid with Planeswalkers

5:23 PM
Oh wow, right, doubling season applied to Planeswalkers too via all kinds of counters.

In particular, it applies to Planeswalkers entering the battlefield

oh jeez.

That's the primary reason it's a $45 card, and Primal Vigor is a $10 card

That's a large number of planeswalkers who'd be able to ult immediately and some of them would still even be around afterwards with a loyalty counter or two.
@murgatroid99 that really does explain a lot. i was like "is it just that it affects only the creatures you control..?"

Imagine (with some acceleration) "Turn 4 Doubling Season, Turn 5 Tamiyo, Field Researcher, immediately Ult, cast 4 other planeswalkers and ult them too"

5:27 PM
I just did a cursory examination: every Chandra ever printed would be able to ult immediately, several of them would have 3 or 4 loyalty counters left, only two would hit 0.
Garruk's the same, Nissa would be put 1-2 points away from her ults.
sounds pretty bananas.

Also most of the Ajanis, Dack, all of the Elspeths, most Jaces, most Lilianas, etc.
The worst might be Narset, Transcendent
Tibalt is still unplayable

@murgatroid99 whoa. 4 mana, right off the bat restrict your opponents to creature spells only.

Jace, Memory Adept is pretty ridiculous there too. 5 mana: draw 20

@murgatroid99 haha, i read about that! Mark Rosewater talked about how development was excited about the idea of making a low-cost planeswalker -- and it served as a lesson that development can sometimes get excited about seeing what they can do, but just because they can do something doesn't mean they should.

I remember that too
With two Doubling Seasons, Tibalt becomes a really cheap Insurrection, but at that point I'm sure there are better things you can do with two mana

Eh, you still have to sacrifice lands

Oh. Huh. Primal Vigor would also double Myriad.
(i mean, of course it would, but that's neato)

6:28 PM

Oh, did you guys see that they're reprinting Oath of Druids?
