room topic changed to Physics Problem Solving: Discussion about a new site for solving physics problems. See physicsproblems.nfshost.com/?qa=questions [awesome] [new-site]
@Mew, @JohnRennie, @S007, until the Physics Problem Solving chat is completely ready to use, let's use this room to discuss it and move the discussion out of the hbar. When we're ready, we can migrate it completely over per ACuriousMind's suggestion.

@heather Pinging people who have never been in a room doesn't work

@ACuriousMind, well, that was impressively dumb. =) How do you do it?

If you link the start/end messages of the conversations you'd like to move here, I can move them, but there would also be no problem if they stay where they are
@heather You can't. You could ping them in the main chat with a link to this chat, or I could use mod superpowers to ping them here. But I think by making them room owners you have already notified them.

@heather I added an answer to the meta on the new site...check it

2:26 PM
@ACuriousMind, ah, okay then. Thank you.

Would the SE team appreciate their chat being used to organize a competing site?
It's probably a ToS violation.

@S007, very helpful, thank you.

Anonymous
@0celo7 We are working in collaboration with PSE

Anonymous
Its not a competing site

Anonymous
Rather like a little brother site

2:28 PM
@0celo7, it isn't a competing site, for goodness' sake. They didn't want the site; it isn't part of their scope, it isn't competing. We'd also be glad to work with PSE. And anyway, we'll be moving to the chat on the other site as soon as it is fully up and running.

Why not use Skype?

@S007, Any thoughts on the scope?
@0celo7, Occam's razor. It's simpler to chat.

Anonymous
@heather For now let it be undergraduate and high school level

Ok I will post some questions to get you started

@S007, why not graduate? Besides, I wouldn't control "age" or "level".

2:30 PM
@S007 Please be careful with statements like that. As of now, there is no collaboration, you're simply a different site. Whether there will be collaboration (e.g. pointing people to your site in the homework close reason here) is something that will have to be determined in the future.

@0celo7, as long as they are good ones. =P

@heather yes, I have some good ones
null index morse theory, for instance
I didn't quite understand it from HE

Dunno what that is, but sure, carry on.

@heather high school level, basic algebra and calculus

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind Okay. But we hope to collaborate.....

Anonymous
2:31 PM
After all we are members of PSE

Anonymous
@heather You want to allow graduate level problems ?

@0celo7, okay, I'll take your word for it.

@S007 Sure, I'm not saying there can't be collaboration. But, for instance, some users of PO are also members of physics.SE and we're decidedly not working in collaboration with PO.

@S007, why not?
@ACuriousMind, sure. But I'd like to hope relations between PSE and PPS will be more friendly.

Anonymous
@heather Well we can :)...I was just asking

2:33 PM
Now that we have reasonable mods, that might happen @heather

@heather All I'm saying is avoid making such statements until a) your site is running stably and b) there's meta consensus here of how we treat it.

Anonymous
But for that we need people who can answer them

Back when PO started we just had Mr. Grump and the robot

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind Ok. I get your point!

Now we have the benevolent AI and that other guy who seems fairly human

2:35 PM
@ACuriousMind, yes, that does make sense.

Good, I like making sense :)

=)

Anonymous
@0celo7 Trust me. I'm human ;-)

As am I

Yes, we are all humans here. Definitely.

2:36 PM
licks paws
Uh, sure

=P

I linked mathjax tutorial from MathSe

Anonymous
is that okay ?

Anonymous
@heather

@S007, for now, yes, probably

2:39 PM
Can mathjax load packages?

@ACuriousMind, do you think that's a problem? Linking to Math SE for the mathjax tutorial?

If so, you want the commutative diagrams package and the physics package.

@heather No, linking to SE posts is perfectly fine

Proof?

It's implying that you are somehow affliated with SE that would be a problem.

Anonymous
2:41 PM
@0celo7 Ask all technical stuff to @Mew

Anonymous
:-P

A: Can I add LaTeX packages to MathJax?

Davide Cervone Is there a way of using LaTeX packages with MathJax? No. MathJax isn't LaTeX; it processes input that is LaTeX-like (as close as it reasonably can be to true LaTeX), but the way it works under the hood is very different. One difference in particular is that MathJax only implements the math...

I would like to see SE sue @heather
Would be funny

@0celo7 you are a bad human :<

@ACuriousMind aww
@Sanya omg the arrows work now

Anonymous
2:42 PM
@ACuriousMind Why would it be a problem ?

All I needed was a new phone

All SE posts are licensed as cc-by-sa/creative commons, you can even copy an entire post and put it on your page as long as you link back to the original one and clearly state it's copied.

@0celo7 arrows?

Reply arrows

@0celo7 ah ... wouldn't know, I'm on laptops anyway

2:43 PM
@S007 Because...you're not affliated with SE? SE is like a "brand", they will take issue with someone pretending to be part of it when they're not.

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind So, would it be better to delete all references to SE ?

It's not like they're Boko Haram

@S007 references $\neq$ claim of affiliation

Don't use math in conversation

@S007 No, as I said linking to SE posts or talking about SE is perfectly fine. Just don't imply that you're part of the SE network or somehow endorsed by/cooperating with SE.

2:45 PM
@0celo7 why? :o

It's informal.

@0celo7 so?

Stack exchange chat is highly formal.

math $\in$ conversation is fun

@0celo7 $\forall$ chatters $\ \{$ 0celo7$\}: \exists$ no problem :p

2:53 PM
What?

@Sanya Use \setminus to produce the backslash you presumably wanted to have in there

3:17 PM
@ACuriousMind ah ^^"

1 hour later…
4:31 PM
Hello any body here for help

4:47 PM

7:14 PM
@heather check the new answers i wrote...are they ok?

@S007, you changed your profile image, huh? Anyway, the answers look fine to me, though I'm not an expert.
I'm creating a new community ad for the site

Anonymous
@heather No, I was thinking of changing ,my profile image...I change it every week :-P..this is temporary

ah, I see =)

Anonymous
@heather Sure...but i think we can launch the site on new year :-D

Anonymous
keep the ad ready !

7:25 PM
It already is launched @S007

Anonymous
@heather No,I mean as a real site and not a prototype :-P

Anonymous
After we complete the meta and remove all technical glitches

I think this will be the "real" site

Anonymous
@heather Yes. But first we need to solve all technical issues before we can call it a real site

Anonymous
still there are many technical problems :-)

7:29 PM
ah, I guess
one moment, here's a first draft of the ad:
@S007, what do you think of that?
I can't get the text color/font quite right, but how's the general style?

Anonymous
hahahahahahahhahahha XD

Anonymous
cool

yes! That's just the response I wanted, perfect
now how is the font/color of the text?
would it be better for the font to be sloppier, more computer-y, or maybe handwriting like @S007

Anonymous
maybe make the background image a bit darker...will make it look more classy!

ah, yeah, that'd make sense
one moment

Anonymous
7:32 PM
and the second sentence...put it in one line

Okay
and font: handwriting, sloppy, computer-y, as is?

Anonymous
Font and style is ok....remove the word "For"....doesn't sound good

okay

Anonymous
And correct the site name to "Physics Problems Q & A" as the original site name is

@S007, okay, tell me how this looks:
it might be too dark, I'm not sure
But I kind of like it =)

Anonymous
7:45 PM
Awesome! That's it :-D...we will win the Internet with that ad ;-)

yes, okay, now for the final step, then I'll double check on the hbar to see the reaction, and then I'll post!
=D

Anonymous
Are you thinking of posting it now as a community ad ?

Anonymous
I think we should wait till the technical stuff is resolved...also the site hasn't got its final url

Anonymous
this is a temporary url

Anonymous
@Mew told me earlier

Anonymous
7:47 PM
@heather

@S007, okay, then I won't post until @Mew gives the go. But yeah, I was thinking of posting as community ad

Anonymous
It looks great...you can share in hbar as of now...but wait till @Mew gives the call :-)

okay, gotcha, sharing in hbar =)

1 hour later…

8:55 PM
room mode changed to Gallery: anyone may enter, but only approved users can talk

Anonymous
room mode changed to Public: anyone may enter and talk

@S007, I have another one for you:

9:12 PM
Or the slogan could be "Helping you take it one problem at a time" - I just can't think of a good one.

@heather Helping you where you are stuck?

@Sanya, maybe...I just need it to sound a. like it is for students of all levels and b. inviting to question answerers as well as question askers. So I know that phrase is bad. Yours might be good, I don't know.

I'm not a marketing expert ... maybe someone will have a better idea

yeah, neither am I. I'll see what comes up; I've got time.
The other thing that is bothering me is that the first ad I found funny, this one is just an ad.

@heather that one?
that's actually cool

9:27 PM
@Sanya, the kid one?

yep

Yeah, I like that one, but S007/ACuriousMind said it doesn't really appeal to grad students and question answerers. And I agree with that.
I just dunno how to make another ad that captures all of that and is funny.

:| ... I see the problem

(::sigh::)
Okay, I think I've got an idea...one moment

9:48 PM
@Sanya, how do you like the idea behind that one? Obviously I'd make the bottom pictures a little darker so the white text is more readable and it all matches, but overall how is it?

Anonymous
10:02 PM
@heather The picture now seems much better. You could change the name to "Physics Problems Q & A" and change the tagline to the simple "equips you to tackle unfamiliar problems"

@S007, you keep changing your avatar =D

Anonymous
hehe, it changes with my ip address

Anonymous
:-P

Anonymous
how's the tagline ?

anyway, I'll think about that, I kind of like the title. I agree the tagline is bad, though. Hmm, how about "Equipping you to tackle unfamiliar problems" (equips -> equipping)

Anonymous
10:04 PM
Or "come and build your problem solving skills"

Anonymous
:-P

Anonymous
yeah equipping is better

Anonymous
@heather btw remind @mew tomorrow to change the name of the site in that case

@S007, this is going to sound silly, but I only just noticed the title of the site was physics problems =P
but anyway, let's just keep it that way. the more I think about it, the better it is. I was just used to physics problem solving
so I'll change the ad title.

Anonymous
@heather that's what I was thinking for so long....why doesn't your image title match with the site name :-P

10:09 PM
@S007, yeah, because I didn't realize it changed =P

Anonymous
@heather when will you come online tomorrow ?

Anonymous
I need to go now

@S007, later in the afternoon, at around 2:00, for sure, and probably once for around half an hour in the morning.
Have a good day/night!

Anonymous
where do you live btw ?

Anonymous
maybe i'm on opp side of the planet

Anonymous
10:14 PM
@heather

iowa, united states
@S007

Anonymous
yeah, im opposite to you

where do you live?

Anonymous
exactly opposite :-P

Anonymous

10:15 PM

Anonymous
