I can try to set it back much further.
The Gemara are old Jewish texts. I can not say how old, as today is the first time I heard about them, but surely from before 1842, Wikipedia gives a date of 500 CE.
In there, in Sotah 7b (this is what I assume is the proper way to refer to the 'chapter', ...
@IsaacMoses I think I'd rather be "Colonial Mice" than "A Economic Ill", though I guess there's something to be said for "Local Ionic Me". (No I am not changing my username -- that's @Scimonster's thing.)
@Shokhet nah. Everything it finds is public (it's not like government agencies reading your texts), and it's good to know what people are saying about us.
(Speaking, indirectly, of governmental data mining, we had an incident locally where a shooter was identified from his Instagram photo + surveillance footage.)
By the way, @IsaacMoses, how do you do a boolean search for chat? If I try "jew OR judaism OR yodeya" I get only hits for that exact phrase -- the ORs are treated as literal search terms.
I'm pretty sure there's a Tosfos somewhere that says that someone is obligated to pay אתנן זונה, but I can't find it at the moment. — Shokhet28 mins ago
....anyways, the cited example in that question was a little odd....
"How people (or groups) online tick" has been a subject of armchair interest to me for a while. I'd like to see that community succeed. (That's just part of its scope, of course, but at its core the net is made out of people so, to me, understanding people's behavior is kind of fundamental to the other questions that come up.)
@Scimonster the badge scripts run at different frequencies. I've seen Enlightened take several hours to arrive, which doesn't surprise me as it's a more complex query than Nice (which I assume you've already received).
@MonicaCellio Nice i got yesterday when i got the 10th upvote. Today i left a comment (now deleted) asking if there was a reason OP hadn't accepted. It was an oversight, and i got the checkmark. I suppose if it hasn't shown up by morning i'll take it to Mi Yodeya Meta.
This one might be of interest to folks here because of the discussions we sometimes have about pluralism. (Mi Yodeya was not the prompt for this question.)
My site focuses on the controversial topic of hard-boiled-egg-breaking. Most of my users are from the hit-round-ends school, but a few are from the hit-pointy-ends school. These two groups struggle to get along in the world at large, but they have both, somehow, managed to participate construct...

^^^ Thanks! I think this is the first explicit welcome comment I've received on a SE post. :)
@IsaacMoses I never thought I'd get the opportunity to welcome you. :-)

@IsaacMoses it's only fair; you've probably posted hundreds of them, after all. But also, Mi Yodeya has a much stronger culture of this than other sites I've participated on, so it doesn't surprise me that you haven't received one before now. Glad I could change that for you.
@MonicaCellio Looks like about 300, to date. :) I am definitely interested in helping MY be a good example of things it does well, for the rest of the SE network. Thanks for doing so much of that already.
... oops. That query was case-sensitive. I've fixed that now. Make that almost 700.
@IsaacMoses not only is Mi Yodeya a good example in general, but it is also a good example for topics that can sometimes get, er, contentious. We do way, way better than what I've seen of the other religion sites (disclaimer: no experience w/Buddhism.SE or Hinduism.SE). I haven't looked much at Politics.SE, so I can't compare us to them.
@IsaacMoses mostly, from what I see, but they get flare-ups over "Truth questions", and there seem to be some issues with Protestants vs. Catholics at times. There was an Area 51 proposal for Catholicism not long ago because they didn't feel able to participate there. (I don't know the details.)
