I've gotten lazy. Once upon a time this would have been a summary of my 4 page chabura on that topic. Now it's just a vague reference to such a thing.

A: Origins of "turn over in his grave"?

Pieter van den AkkerI can try to set it back much further. The Gemara are old Jewish texts. I can not say how old, as today is the first time I heard about them, but surely from before 1842, Wikipedia gives a date of 500 CE. In there, in Sotah 7b (this is what I assume is the proper way to refer to the 'chapter', ...

@Scimonster Nice. I suggested an edit to that answer; I think you noticed that I was commenting there :)

@Shokhet Oh, that was you?
JK ;)

....I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to edit in my bit of Jastrow, or just leave it there as a comment.
@Scimonster :)
@Scimonster ....it was hard to tell that you were commenting, @Cnersmoit :P

@Shokhet If even i'm not used to that, no way would you forget that Scimonster is me. :P

@Scimonster Also true :)

@Scimonster How about Mr. Icon Sets?

@IsaacMoses Awesome.

Metric's Son?

I didn't know i anagrammed like that. :P

It scorns me?
Scorns Time?

@IsaacMoses I figured. :P

I Scorn STEM?
@Scimonster It's a nice, versatile set of letters for annagramming

Ice Mr Snots
@IsaacMoses And for some reason, Cnsersmoit isn't on there.

3:44 PM
@Scimonster sounds reasonable -- go for it.
@IsaacMoses I think I'd rather be "Colonial Mice" than "A Economic Ill", though I guess there's something to be said for "Local Ionic Me". (No I am not changing my username -- that's @Scimonster's thing.)

@MonicaCellio "A Economic Ill" is horrible! Wrong indefinite article! <shudder>
I suppose I could change my name to (1 + e^2) / (2e)
Or "Mace's Oasis" I don't know what it is, but I like the sound of it.

4:12 PM
@DoubleAA So now judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/4622/… can be deleted

@IsaacMoses exactly! I don't want to be ungrammatical! (Whether I want to be economically damaging is a different question.)

@IsaacMoses @MonicaCellio An Ecoomic Ill?

4:27 PM
@IsaacMoses AFAICT, it's the same one

@Shokhet There are two posts linked, one of which is a dupe of the other.

@IsaacMoses Ok
....and that search is pretty creepy, but still interesting ;-)

@Shokhet nah. Everything it finds is public (it's not like government agencies reading your texts), and it's good to know what people are saying about us.

@Shokhet What is the search anyways? @IsaacMoses

Mar 1 '13 at 2:58, by Isaac Moses
@DoubleAA I know. I do creepy global chat searches for "jew OR judaism OR yodeya" on a regular basis. :) </creepy>
@MonicaCellio I agree; @IsaacMoses still refers to the search as "creepy"

4:34 PM
@Shokhet So then how did it pick up the links from reddit?

(Speaking, indirectly, of governmental data mining, we had an incident locally where a shooter was identified from his Instagram photo + surveillance footage.)

@Scimonster I also search (yodeya OR "judaism.stackexchange" OR miyodeya) -arqade on Google

By the way, @IsaacMoses, how do you do a boolean search for chat? If I try "jew OR judaism OR yodeya" I get only hits for that exact phrase -- the ORs are treated as literal search terms.

@IsaacMoses -arqade?

@MonicaCellio I don't anymore. I just do judaism and then yodeya these days

4:36 PM
@IsaacMoses -arqade to filter out SE?
(because it contains that in the footer)

@Scimonster Yup

@IsaacMoses ah. Ok, when I do searches (which are highly erratic) I've been doing them one at a time; wondered if there were a better way.

@IsaacMoses I just did that search and didn't get anything relevant. But kosherfrugal.com/2014/12/… was the #9 hit.
Do you filter?

@Scimonster I cut it down to "last 24 hours" or "last week," depending on how recently I've last done it.
... in case there was any doubt, it was the creepy chat search that got me here.

4:58 PM
....anyone know where this Tosfos is?
I'm pretty sure there's a Tosfos somewhere that says that someone is obligated to pay אתנן זונה, but I can't find it at the moment. — Shokhet 28 mins ago
....anyways, the cited example in that question was a little odd....

@IsaacMoses great answer on encouraging users here: communitybuilding.stackexchange.com/a/1033/83

@MonicaCellio Thanks. I'm writing one now to the other one you tried to wrangle me into. :)

@IsaacMoses cool! :-)
"How people (or groups) online tick" has been a subject of armchair interest to me for a while. I'd like to see that community succeed. (That's just part of its scope, of course, but at its core the net is made out of people so, to me, understanding people's behavior is kind of fundamental to the other questions that come up.)

8:51 PM
@Scimonster Done.
I wonder why i don't have an Enlightened badge for Berachot before/after Shema in Berachot 2a. It's score 10, accepted, and the only answer.
The accept came a few hours ago.

@Scimonster the badge scripts run at different frequencies. I've seen Enlightened take several hours to arrive, which doesn't surprise me as it's a more complex query than Nice (which I assume you've already received).

@MonicaCellio Nice i got yesterday when i got the 10th upvote. Today i left a comment (now deleted) asking if there was a reason OP hadn't accepted. It was an oversight, and i got the checkmark. I suppose if it hasn't shown up by morning i'll take it to Mi Yodeya Meta.

9:09 PM
There it is.

@MonicaCellio I also picked off a question from your Favorites there and gave my answer.

@Scimonster nice.
@IsaacMoses cool! Glad to have provided an entry point. Please continue. :-)

@MonicaCellio :) I'll try

This one might be of interest to folks here because of the discussions we sometimes have about pluralism. (Mi Yodeya was not the prompt for this question.)

Q: Should I do anything to protect, or even privilege, minority opinions on my site?

Monica CellioMy site focuses on the controversial topic of hard-boiled-egg-breaking. Most of my users are from the hit-round-ends school, but a few are from the hit-pointy-ends school. These two groups struggle to get along in the world at large, but they have both, somehow, managed to participate construct...

^^^ Thanks! I think this is the first explicit welcome comment I've received on a SE post. :)

@IsaacMoses I never thought I'd get the opportunity to welcome you. :-)
2
@IsaacMoses it's only fair; you've probably posted hundreds of them, after all. But also, Mi Yodeya has a much stronger culture of this than other sites I've participated on, so it doesn't surprise me that you haven't received one before now. Glad I could change that for you.

9:43 PM
@MonicaCellio Looks like about 300, to date. :) I am definitely interested in helping MY be a good example of things it does well, for the rest of the SE network. Thanks for doing so much of that already.
... oops. That query was case-sensitive. I've fixed that now. Make that almost 700.

@IsaacMoses not only is Mi Yodeya a good example in general, but it is also a good example for topics that can sometimes get, er, contentious. We do way, way better than what I've seen of the other religion sites (disclaimer: no experience w/Buddhism.SE or Hinduism.SE). I haven't looked much at Politics.SE, so I can't compare us to them.

@MonicaCellio Has Christianity not settled down?

10:00 PM
@IsaacMoses mostly, from what I see, but they get flare-ups over "Truth questions", and there seem to be some issues with Protestants vs. Catholics at times. There was an Area 51 proposal for Catholicism not long ago because they didn't feel able to participate there. (I don't know the details.)
