@TRiG I've never actually read Men are from Mars; Women are from Venus, but I stand by my experience of having found Tannen's descriptions useful. I'm sure there are plenty of men who, e.g., prefer conversations in which people constantly interrupt each other (something I do not prefer and that to the best of my decade+ memory, Tannen identifies as something women tend toward more), and realizing that that's a conversational style rather than inconsideration is quite useful to me, ...
... regardless of the gender of the person I'm detecting it in.
... Here's my first hack at this. Users who have posted (non-deleted) Q/A: 2612. Users who have posted and then posted at least once over 24 hours later (overall retention): 842 (32%). Users who have had a closure within 24 hours of first post: 187. Number of those retained (as above): 44 (24%). This could be lower because of people getting turned off or because people who post something closeworthy are more likely to be drive-bys. — Isaac Moses16 secs ago
Considering breaking this down by close reason, but I'm afraid the sample sizes are going to get too small.
In general, I think that it could be fruitful to keep investigating retention stats and what factors are most correlated, positively or negatively, with retention. I'm open to suggestions for alternative definitions of retention, factors to check, etc. I'm not above trying out some linear regression if basic percentages aren't interesting enough.
OK, here's one more. Users who have received a welcome comment within 24 hours: 1373. Of those, number retained: 469 (34%)
... and yeah, small sample sizes, but had to try it while in the neighborhood: Users who got a closure AND a welcome comment within 24 hours: 73. Of those, number retained 14 (19%). Uh-oh. Maybe we should stop welcoming clos-ees. (j/k)
Alright. That's enough. I remain open to suggestions. Good night.
If a not-logged-in user tries to upvote or downvote a post, the post gets an anonymous-feedback counter incremented by one. Does the same happen if a logged-in user tries to vote on a post but has already hit his daily vote limit? If not, can it?
What are the guidelines for flagging questions/answers as offensive on mi yodeya? Often, there are postings that ironically ask about halachic applicability of e.g. the principle of mishum eiva, which themselves seem to be violations of that principle, posting content that could easily be miscons...
