I was just listening to the lastest episode of This American Life, the first act of which is about a woman who was manipulated into a false confession to a murder rap by the police, and it made me glad that in Halacha, "a litigant's confession equals 100 witnesses" essentially only applies to civil suits, not criminal convictions.
