@msh210 It may just mean we're more opinionated (or to put a more positive spin, more committed) than other sites' populations. Note also that our election turnout so far, as a proportion of eligible electorate, is pretty high - higher than that proportion for the other few elections that I spot-checked randomly from here.

Q: Editing without bringing question up

b aIs there a way to edit a question or answer without bringing it to the top of the list of questions? Sometimes I notice that I made a mistake in a question or answer (spelling, etc.) but don't fix it since that would bring the post up to the top of the list (although the question was already answ...

Q: July 2012 Moderator Election - Town Hall Chat Digest

Tim StoneThe following is a "digest" version of the July 2012 Moderator Election Town Hall Chat. The format, as described on Meta Stack Overflow, is one answer to this question for every question asked in the Town Hall, containing all the candidate's answers to that question. It’s summer here at StackHQ. Have a flower!

You’re welcome. Now on to some serious work. Can we talk about cultural anthropology for a minute? I’d like to talk about what happens when a community (online or off) gets to be about… oh, three or four years old.

Every community starts out needing to recruit members, so they tend to be very friendly to newcomers.

After a few years, an insider group of old-timers forms. They get to know each other. They know the rules. They know the history and the legends of the community. And it’s only natural to get little bit irritated when newbies show up who don’t know the rules. …

@msh210 Are there site specific mod-only rooms or just a collective one? (ie do you guys need to read the discussions about other sites in the same room?) — Double AA 5 mins ago

@msh210 It's not a yes or no answer?

@DoubleAA It is, basically, but was off-topic to that meta post. There's a room for all sites' mods. Then there's a room for MY's mods. (I assume each site has one, too.)

@msh210 I see. How was writing 'lets continue in chat' shorter than writing that^^^?

@DoubleAA In case you had a question on my answer, etc. I didn't want to continue the discussion there; it didn't belong there AFAICouldT.
@DoubleAA Besides which, technically it's shorter. ;-)

@msh210 At least it retroactively justified itself.
@msh210 You could have said: Both.

6:17 PM
@DoubleAA :-)
@DoubleAA True.
@DoubleAA Would you have had a followup comment to that?

@msh210 I don't think so. I suppose someone else might.
@msh210 I'm missing it...

@DoubleAA My correction korea->kore. Kore=reader. Korea=ripper.

@msh210 Ohh I was reading Korea like the home of Kim Jon Un

@DoubleAA Yes, he goes by "Jack", too.

BTW don't you guys dismiss flags individually? (ie one mod's decision per flag)
How did I get a disputed flag?
(I formally permit you to mention the flag contents if/as necessary.)

6:24 PM
@DoubleAA What did you flag?

I'm more curious how disputed happened instead of helpful or not helpful.

@DoubleAA I think that's because someone who can review flags (not a mod) spotted your flag and marked it not helpful.
@DoubleAA We do, yes, although we sometimes discuss them first.

@msh210 I thought that particular flag reason is 'moderator attention' and not in the general flag list (for spam flags).

@msh210 The other time you can get a disputed flag is when you mark a flag as invalid: that marking counts a flag itself (and is disputed by the very flag you're marking so is called 'disputed').

@msh210 But that is not the case here. I was a flagger, not a reveiwer.

6:32 PM
@DoubleAA I know. I'm just saying, for completeness.
@DoubleAA No, I think only the "it needs moderator attention" flags are seen by only moderators.
@msh210 ...I can find out for sure if you want.

@msh210 I agree. But I think that Not an Answer, VLQ and Other all fit in that category. Spam and Not for our Community are in the other general category.

@DoubleAA You're right. Interesting.
@DoubleAA Hang on, lemme find out.

@msh210 No rush :)

6:52 PM
@DoubleAA Aha! Here's the explanation: A "very low quality" flag gets dismissed as disputed if the post is edited (by anyone (except possibly a ♦ mod, not sure about that)) after the flag is raised. (So ignore my above conjecture about your flag's being visible to non-mods.) (A tip of the hat to Anna Lear for this explanation.)

@msh210 Including the original poster.
@msh210 That's actually a reasonable rule.

@DoubleAA Including the original poster -- among editors, you mean? Yes, that's right.
@DoubleAA Yes, except that, as Anna Lear pointed out, it applies even if the edit was just retagging or (I think) editing the title.

@msh210 That's not so reasonable. It's hard to imagine that bad quality being solved by a retag.

@DoubleAA Right. I guess it needs tweaking.

@msh210 Thanks for checking!

6:56 PM
@DoubleAA My pleasure. I learned something new today!

@msh210 On Mi Yodeya? That always happens to me :)

Q: Hypothetical kashruth situation

Adam MoshehIt is a time of shmad. You can either die or be forced to eat one serving of camel meat or drink one serving of camel milk. You say that you would rather have half of each cooked together, saying that it is permissible and even optimal. Why do you say that?

@DoubleAA *Star*
@msh210 And to you also
