@Jin, @IsaacMoses, @DoubleAA, @ShmuelBrin, @HodofHod - catching up now that I can see images. The logo with the Hebrew under the tree is very striking, but I do worry that not having the English will be a challenge. I suggest presenting both to the wider community. The six-pointed star seems like an obvious candidate for the favorite icon. Crowns for badges sound neat; worlds is esoteric and also hard to render at that scale. (I didn't know badges were customizable!)
For arrows, let's not get too ornate or esoteric. What's wrong with simple arrow-heads? Sure, eitzim are evocative once you know what they are, but to many people they'll be a "huh?" until someone explains them, and I'm not sure it's clever enough to be worth the UX cost. Sorry if I'm being a wet blanket...

2:16 AM
@MonicaCellio if the worlds won't have continents, they may look very familiar :)

Jin
@MonicaCellio I agree with simple arrows.

3:14 AM
Maybe we can move the scroll idea to the tags. It would just be a tan bar with words in it, only we would put small poles at either side.

10 hours later…
1:03 PM
@ShmuelBrin If the worlds don't have continents, how do we know they're customized? :-)
@DoubleAA ooh, that sounds neat! Scrolls for tags should work well; the background is already dynamic, matching the width of the word, so we wouldn't have the layout problems that @Jin mentioned for votes.

2 hours later…
3:06 PM
@DoubleAA I like. Or just rolled-up scroll at either end (or one end), without a pole, even.

3:52 PM
...although OTOH I guess that's less Jewish (JLL-y) than with a pole.

4:04 PM
...so maybe not.

4:14 PM
@msh210 Megillas Esther?

@ShmuelBrin Yeah, but also any scroll. I mean, there have been many, many non-Jewish scrolls over the years.

In the lifecycle of a Stack Exchange site, we’ve long held the philosophy that “it takes as long as it takes” to build a sustainable community:

The simple answer is, it takes as long as it takes. We’ll wait. If a site needs more activity, go out and evangelize it. As long as your site shows steady progress and continues to make the Internet a better place to get expert answers to your questions, it will march on.

But when a site struggles to maintain any semblance of steady progress — when it’s struggling to garner an audience, a healthy core of experts, and a steady stre …

Oh, were we supposed to start a parasha chat 23 minutes ago?
Hm, I guess I'll start it now, then. Begin Parashat Hashavua' Chat #19 - Tazria-M'tzora / Achare-K'doshim 5772 It can end 23 minutes late, too. Or more. Whatever.
Welcome, @Jin, @ShmuelBrin, @DoubleAA, @Jez, @Alex, @TorasEMES613
Someone else will have to end the chat, though, as I iy"H won't be here.

@msh210 That is likely the longest possible chat name.

Anyone have a topic of interest to start us off?
@DoubleAA True. Which raises the question, why doesn't Israel read only Achare this week, and catch up next week. But we've covered that already.

6
Q: When Israel and the diaspora are out of sync on parshiyot, why don't we take the first opportunity to re-align?

Monica CellioThis year (5772) the seventh day of Pesach is on a Friday, so the diaspora has an 8th day of chag on Shabbat but Israel does not. The diaspora will thus read Sh'mini on April 21, Tazria-Metzora on Apr 28, and so on through Bamidbar right before Shavuot. Israel, on the other hand, will read Sh'm...

@DoubleAA Precisely.
Okay... the Torah covers human tzaraas, then fabric tzaraas, then rehabilitating the human, then house tzaraas. Shouldn't rehabilitating the human be either at the end or after human tzaraas?
Specifically, human tzaraas, 13:1-46,
fabric, 13:47-59,
rehabilitating a human, 14:1-32,
house tzaraas, 14:33-53

@msh210 Maybe that would fit according to the opinion that house tzaraas never actually happened. But I don't know how the other view would explain the sequence.

6:02 PM
@Alex Certainly the question would be weaker then. I'm not sure it would be nonexistent.

Moreover, I remember seeing that "house Tzaraas" would help Jews find money hidden in the walls by the knaanim (you have to knock down the wall, and whatever money is there falls out). Yet, it seems to be a punishment, so how could Chote Nischar?

@ShmuelBrin According to that view, some aspect of it was not as punishment.

@ShmuelBrin I recall seeing a footnote in The Midrash Says (I don't recall their source) that this would happen only if indeed the shock of having his house torn down made the person do complete teshuvah.

@Alex hakol b'chezkas sumin?

@msh210 Sure, but also, the treasure could indeed be found where it was, or it could tumble down into the foundation and never be noticed

6:09 PM
@Alex true.

@msh210 Going back to the original question, googling טהרת מצורע נגעי בתים comes up first with an article from Virtual Beit Midrash, pointing out (among other things) that house tzaraas came into effect only later, when they entered Eretz Yisrael. So the Torah first finishes off with everything that is relevant immediately, and then goes on to the longer term.

@Alex ah, thank you! -- that sounds reasonable. Do they cite anyone?

@msh210 They quote from Midrash Tadshe why the Torah doesn't begin with house tzaraas (since usually that's supposed to be the first in the sequence of Divine warnings), but about the fact that it's placed after טהרת המצורע they just say "יתכן," it may be.

@Alex thanks

Come to think of it, too, it might indeed be that if the Torah had placed house tzaraas anywhere earlier in the sequence (and prefaced it with "when you come into the Land..."), then we might have misunderstood that anything described after that - say the procedure of purifying the metzora - also applies only after they enter Eretz Yisrael.
New topic, if no one minds:
I wonder, about tzaraas, whether the diagnosis was based only on the external symptoms, or whether the kohen had to consider underlying causes too. Say for example someone spills hydrogen peroxide on their skin, which bleaches the area white; would that count as tzaraas?

6:26 PM
@Alex Probably not, but he would be tahor after some hesger anyway.

@DoubleAA And if the peroxide also affected the color of the hairs in that area? Then he'd be muchlat

@Alex He should have worn gloves :)

Jin
hi all.

@Jin Hi!

Jin
sorry to interrupt, I have a quick question. there are some visual embellishment I'd like to use on the site design, to give it some extra polish.
so I have two quick questions: are these appropriate to use: 1) the trees/branch motif found on some ketubahs. 2) Arabesque patterns.
^ tree/floral patterns

6:30 PM
wow!

Jin
^ pattern

don't both of those look kind of "busy"?
not that I have any sense of graphic design

Jin
@Alex yes. but I won't be using it like that. I'm just wondering if the imageries are appropriate. In practice, they'd be used very very subtlely

:4356183 I don't think they're inappropriate. I don't see anything particularly Jewish about interweaving and twirling lines either.

Jin
@DoubleAA @Alex I think so too. I've looked at many many Jewish related artworks. I don't see a "common" pattern or motif among them.

6:34 PM
@Alex (Didn't mean to edit that. It was supposed to be a new comment)

Jin
so I'm not sure if there is "the pattern" to use. However, a lot of artworks/book designs I've seen so far do share a common and organic look to them.

@Jin True, Jewish artwork in each area does tend to resemble the local styles

Jin
using curves, typographical embellishments etc.
for example, I've seen some patterns that resemble what I pasted above ^

OOOH,

@Jin I think that is so in both religions because it is relatively neutral. (For instance, Christian artwork is filled with depictions of Bible scenes. Islam especially is very against any kind of anthropomorphism.)

6:37 PM
@ShmuelBrin If we were going to use old title pages, we might as well go with the Vilna Shas one, as someone once suggested

@Alex Agreed. But it isnteresting to see how the title page artwork has changed

@Alex not my point. I just want to show that artwork depends on the country.

@ShmuelBrin True.

Jin
@ShmuelBrin although that'd work well for captcha/error/404 page images...

One generally wouldn't expect to see those types of kruvim in a Jewish book.

6:39 PM
@ShmuelBrin What, you've never read the whole series on "racy title pages" at the Seforim Blog?

Jin
if you can find some light-hearted ones. I used a similar style for English.se's 404, captcha, and error pages.

@Jin That raises some possibilities... maybe we could find some old Haggadah images that would work for those (haggadahs being almost the only illustrated Jewish books in the pre-modern era)

@Alex @ShmuelBrin How's that ^^^ for strange?

@DoubleAA I'll see you that and raise this:

@Alex I fold :)

Jin
6:48 PM
@Alex Sorry I don't know what it means :) would it be for error/captcha/404?

@Jin Nah, none of the above. We had kind of gone off-topic there.
I guess maybe some subtle arabeques in the corners of the page might work - they would evoke some 19th-century title pages of Hebrew books - but I don't know.

Jin
@Alex I definitely like the aesthetics of those patterns. My concern is that it has an Islamic origin, which may or may not be appropriate?

@Jin Ideally, then, I guess we'd want to find one that was used for some well-known book (like the Talmud or the Code of Jewish Law or something), so that it would evoke that association instead.

Jin
@Alex yes I think so too. thanks!

@Alex @jin

Q: Why are there colored splotches on the pages on many Jewish texts?

ShalomOn many editions of the Chumash, Talmud, and even many more-modern books, you look at the side of the book (opposite the spine) and there are random colored splotches printed on the pages. (For instance, the HaMaor edition of the Mikraot Gedolot Chumash has red and blue splotches.) Any idea why...

6:57 PM
@ShmuelBrin That's a good point - if one or the other edge of the page can be made to look like the side of an open book, then those splotches could work as a design element

@ShmuelBrin perfect example

1 hour later…
8:12 PM
@Jin Re: 404/captcha/error pages, how would you use those title pages for those pages?
@Everybody else: did we ever come to an agreement on 404 and captcha? I know we discussed both
@ShmuelBrin ^
since you're here
also @ShmuelBrin, do you have a duplicate unregistered user out there?

8:53 PM
@HodofHod not since the M.Y days.
@HodofHod I used to be Joe Shmoe (IIRC), I didn't have access to hebrewbooks (or real seforim) when using it, so the answers are generally not worth too much.
That's why when I came back, I just made up a new name.

Jin
9:20 PM
@HodofHod I liked the quote @IsaacMoses came up with for 404

There's a lot of ideas floating around for these. Can we put them as answers to a meta-post and let people vote? Have the post open for ~48 hours.

Jin
@DoubleAA @HodofHod I think that's a good idea. A meta post would be good to get some ideas.

10:02 PM
@Jin A specific 404/captcha one? Or a general design ideas one?

Jin
@HodofHod just for 404/captcha/error images.
we're getting closer to present to the community the site designs soon.

I'll do that then, unless you want to.

Jin
@HodofHod Feel free to do it. I'd like to point out that typically as a convention, we make those page images pretty light hearted, goofy even.
so that's a point you should make, if you're to make the meta post.

@Jin I will, and I'll also link to some from other sites

Jin
@HodofHod thanks! people don't have to link specific images per se, ideas are welcome too.

10:07 PM

@DoubleAA That's not long. (Ping @HodofHod )

@msh210 Well, I figured Jin and co. needed the info soon. If we warn people about the deadline, they will probably get stuff in quicker.
@msh210 Plus, I was mostly looking for a way to sort out and vote on the ideas we already had here, not neccasarliy looking for too many new ones.

@DoubleAA Ah, I see. But the set of chatters is considerably smaller than the set of site users, so we may well get more good -- even consensually considered better -- ideas
@DoubleAA thanks for bookmarking the chat and updating the meta post

@msh210 I hope that is true! I suppose it really depends when SE needs the decisions by.
@msh210 No problem. It wasn't a very long chat.

Jin
@DoubleAA we can always put in the 404 or Error pages images a few days following launches, those are not as urgent since those pages don't get seen often. however I'd like to get some good ideas about the Captcha image, since it's a lot more visible.

10:21 PM
Should I seed the meta question with answers that contain all the ideas we've discussed here, or should I let the proper users do that?

Jin
@HodofHod I think you can start the post, and post the ideas gathered here as a separate answer?

@Jin If I do them all in one post, though, upvotes won't clearly show which ideas are favored.

Jin
@HodofHod that's true. I think separate posts for each image is fine. I just didn't want to clutter up Meta.
but you're the mod, your call :)

@Jin Hmm. I'll do a separate post for each. I think most of the images posted here were just examples of the idea, and don't necessarily have to be brought in the post. I guess we'll see.
Ok, post is up. I'll do whichever ideas I see, but if I forget one, please add it, @Jin @Isaac @DoubleAA @ShmuelBrin

Jin
@HodofHod thank you

Q: Design Ideas for 404, Captcha, and Error pages

HodofHodAs you all know, StackExchange's resident designer, Jin, has informed us that our site is due for graduation soon. Jin has been really awesome about getting input and ideas from the community about how the site should look. Now Jin is going to work on the design for the 404, Captcha, and Error pa...

Sorry @all, I have to run. I'll try to add the rest of the ideas later, but if anyone wants to start adding them, by all means, feel free.
@msh210 @DoubleAA @Jin @ShmuelBrin ^^^

... How far back (in chat) do these go?
@HodofHod tell me, please, if you mean to +1 my afikoman answer, and I'll do so; otherwise I won't.

11:24 PM
@msh210 I do mean to, in fact, I was hoping to do both, if you don't mind doing that for me

@HodofHod Okay, I did both for you.

@msh210 thanks!

@HodofHod Welcs.

@Jin SE doesn't have someone who does original artwork (drawings) do they? Do you?

@HodofHod Aren't most of the design elements (arrows, stars, etc etc) used on the various sites original?

11:31 PM
@msh210 But I mean drawings, not so much computer art, (or whatever you call it :D)

Jin
@HodofHod it depends on the art work. I've done quite a bit of original drawings. but for something out of my abilities, I either purchase stock art, or commission someone to do it

For example, the logos are all original

Jin
for example, I commissioned an artist to do the header image of our RPG site

@Jin Ahh, I was wondering, because I found it hard to find a good image of the Golem, unless we go with an image of its statue in Prague. I couldn't find any good images of that on google image search, but maybe some stock photography sites have one. The other alternative is a drawing

@HodofHod We'd need something recognizable as the golem. I don't know if anything would fit that bill.

Jin
11:37 PM
^ is that the statue?

@msh210 Well if you're not particular about which golem, having Emet on his forehead might be identification enough
@Jin Not the one I had in mind. msh210 linked to the correct one.

Jin
lol that's so Vader..

@Jin It's speculated that the Golem may have provided the inspiration for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The statue may indeed have been the inspiration for Vader, who knows?
@Jin But there's a Jewish kids cartoon that features a fight between the Golem and a robot called "Oy Vader" (from the yiddish phrase "oy vey" )

11:56 PM
Speaking of which, there's Mendy and the Golem. (Not the same golem as in Prague.) I doubt many would recognize that one, either, though. I know I wouldn't. Plus, there are probably copyright issues.
