Q: suggestions for Kosher iphone apps

aporatI'm an iPhone app developer with mostly Jewish & Israeli iPhone apps and I'm open to new suggestions or ideas for new apps that can be useful for Jewish people. Anyone here had a case that he needed an iPhone app related to Judaism and couldn't find it in the app store?

^^^^ In-scope? SE-appropriate?

Q: Is this iPhone question in-scope?

Isaac Mosessuggestions for Kosher iphone apps Does it make sense for us to host this question? Does it count as a question about JL&L, or is it just a market research question that's specific to this time?

9:45 PM
@IsaacMoses Whaddaya think?

@msh210 I like your answer.

@IsaacMoses Thanks. Me, too. What was or is bugging you about the (nonmeta) question?

I'll probably ✓ it, but I just want to see if anyone else has a compelling argument..
@msh210 "What do you wish there was" seems a bit subjective and open-ended.

@IsaacMoses Oh. I wasn't sure if it was that or the topicality that is at issue.

@msh210 Also, the question only applies to iPhones, now, which is possibly "too localized."
... but I hear you that that's a broader interest than I may have thought.

9:51 PM
@IsaacMoses But there are many iPhone app authors. Compare:

Q: What other work can a mashgiach do in a kosher restaurant today?

ShalomIn a kosher restaurant today, must the mashgiach (kosher inspector) spend 100% of his time watching everything, or can he do some other work in the restaurant? How much work? I know this may vary from kosher agency to kosher agency, so multiple answers ("I've seen this policy in my town") are f...

@IsaacMoses That's what happens when I look for another question while you're replying to what I'm about to type. :-)

I think the open-endedness justifiably raises automatic suspicion. I think I'll edit the question to include your "ideally, should come with explanations of why or how the proposed app would be useful and different from what's already on the market."

@IsaacMoses I agree with your first sentence. And your second sounds to me like a good plan.

I'm still not a fan of what-is-your-favorite-passuk

@IsaacMoses That displays as "I'm still not a fan of judaism.stackexchange.com/...".
@IsaacMoses Nor am I.

what-is-your-favorite-haggadah is better, in that it asks "and why?" but it still got mostly low-quality answers.
@IsaacMoses eh; closed 'em both
@msh210 Executed.

10:00 PM
@IsaacMoses I don't mind that one so much: do you want to get rid of ?
Oh, see comments on that question: I did mind it, just for the same reasons you did. :-)

@msh210 No. "Which is the best X on the market for application Z, and why?" is a useful question, especially if it includes a nice, specific description of Z. "Which is your favorite X?" and even "Which is your favorite X, and why?" are more open-ended.

@IsaacMoses I hear^Wsee that.

@msh210 There's all kinds of great stuff in .

@IsaacMoses I agree completely

[Dead-horse-flog]e.g. "Which Hagada would you recommend for an all-adult beginners' seder in the US, and why?" would be great. [/Dead-horse-flog]

10:11 PM
@IsaacMoses Tzaar baale mesim!

@msh210 Another great question example: "It's forbidden to flog a live horse, and it's forbidden to flog a dead person. Is it forbidden to flog a dead horse?"
... which reminds me: in Shevat, I plan to ask on meta about Purim Torah.
or maybe sooner

Q: Are there burial requirements for pets?

Monica CellioHalacha requires certain burial practices for people, because people are special. Are there any requirements or, especially, prohibitions regarding pets who have died? Is it acceptable to cremate them, or must they be buried? If buried, are there requirements about how? (The pets, of course, ...

Not the same as what you just wrote, at all. Just reminded me of it.

@msh210 I think that would be "... misah"

@IsaacMoses You're gonna wind up spoiling all my fun. ;-(

@msh210 That's what mods are for.
(my fun too, BTW)

10:18 PM
@IsaacMoses True. I was, for some odd reason, mistranslating chayim as the plural present tense -slash- adjective instead of correctly as the abstract noun.
Erm.
Actually.

@msh210 well, it's a strange noun.

The singular is baal chay.
So it is the adjective -cum- present tense in use.

@msh210 ... misos, then, I guess.

I give up.

And furthermore, that phrase
- Oh, sorry. Asur or not, it's probably not recommended.

10:29 PM
@IsaacMoses Hm?

@msh210 (I didn't really have anything else to say; I just wanted to appear to be starting to flog another dead horse.)

@IsaacMoses Whoosh.

@msh210 The sound of an ill-swung horsewhip, sailing through space.

@IsaacMoses :-D
