This new sandbox thing, doesn't it really slow down the amount of riddles put up on puzzling? So isn't that bad?
Even if their quality is bad, users would at least learn from their experiences on puzzling and then put up better content

@AditKirtani See Emrakul's comment right above
bad riddles still being upvoted means that users don't learn to put up better content

@f'' then we should eliminate bad riddles or puzzles. Maybe a new type of flag could do the job.

@Emrakul Yeah, I certainly agree. I have three riddles that I regret posting. One of them is currently at +11, which breaks down to +16 and -5. It was finally closed after 14 answers, although I already tried to close it after the first five answers going nowhere near the intended (but actually not very good, compared to one other answer).
The others are at +7/-4 and +5/-3, but I posted those ages ago, when I was certainly learning how to write a good riddle.

Once an answer in the Sandbox gets +10, do we need to do something about it? I mean, do we delete/VTC it or do we leave it as it is?

JayeshThis is a simple riddle but looking hard. I’m at a loss; I’m in the dark, I really don’t know where to start. Words of two, syllables three, That’s a start to label me. Put me on the spot to show Intention, that is all I know. Look a cigarette in the eye See smoke curl; ask it why. Who o...

@IAmInPLS The PPCG policy is:
When you post your question on the main site, edit the sandbox post to include a link to the challenge, removing everything but the title and the link. This is to keep the sandbox more compact and reduce the scrolling needed to view other proposals. Furthermore, delete the post. (You should edit it anyway, because high-reputation users can still see deleted posts.)
I think we just should be a little careful with deleting, to avoid people closing Qs because they can't see the answer the originated from. Otherwise, this proposal seems fine to me.

MariusI am many things. I am a place of joy for the kids. I make the job easier for adults with a certain job. I am a tree. For the kids, I'm made of a lot of small pieces. For the adults, I don't exist physically. When I'm a tree, I can grow up to 60m and explode yearly. That has been my life...

cr0I recently posted the following short, sweet riddle with a title I found creative. I was surprised that it wasn't well received (1 upvote, 1 downvote, answered in 5 minutes). It's brevity could explain how quick it was answered. I'm looking for feedback on why this isn't a great riddle - too simp...

@wythagoras Oh it was not even a proposal, I just wanted to know if there was a general policy to handle these. Nice to see the PPCG's one, do you think we should propose this as a question on the meta?

@IAmInPLS I realize my last comment was a bit vague, with "this proposal", I referred to the PPCG policy.

@wythagoras And what do you think for PSE?

I think a lot that PPCG has would work for us too, and if/when we decide we want to continue with this, we can just sort out what we need.

One suggestion. Since we are using the sandbox for riddles, how about when downvoting a riddle on meta, one will leave a comment explaining why the downvote. This will help riddle-posters improve the quality of their riddles over time. If this was already proposed, it looks like people are not sticking to it.

2:12 PM
@Marius Ideally, one would leave a comment for (almost) all downvotes, whether on meta, main or another site

@wythagoras True, but maybe at least on meta people will do this. Since there is no reputation change on meta.
this is an other thing that concerns me. Some people will downvote riddles on meta just because they don't know the answer.
I propose this. For sandboxed riddles, the downvotes with no comments should not count. I mean...you have 12 upvotes, 3 downvotes and only 1 or 2 comments from the downvoters, you riddle is valid.

@Marius I starred it, interesting idea. Furthermore, I'd like to propose that if the comment states: I downvoted for reason A that is visibly fixed, (e.g. irrelevant or bad "hints" in spoilers that were removed), the downvote also doesn't count anymore.
@Marius However, I realized that there is a problem. Instead of leaving a comment, you should also be able to vote a comment up.

@wythagoras now we are getting somewhere

i.e. multiple people might downvote for the same reason, but then they need to duplicate a comment.

that can also work

Sid
2:22 PM
@Marius That's a fair point. The whole point of the sandbox is to help people improve the quality of riddles.

However, I would not be too happy to make the system too complex.

I totally agree...but this would be better than the blunt "get +10 or gtfo"

In any case, we should avoid people posting to meta arguing that the criteria were met because this downvote didn't count and the other was fixed, etc.

Sid
@wythagoras It doesn't make much sense to downvote riddles for "hints" or all that which could be easily rectified. Downvoting, which i feel, should be done if the riddle is too easy, too vague or something like that..

@Sid Too easy - remove/change a hint. It might still be a viable idea. Too vague - add/change a hint to make it more specific (i.e. not too broad).
That are also things that should be fixed. I would not downvote a sandbox post just because irrelevant or bad "hints" in spoilers (although I might do it on main).

2:28 PM
@wythagoras. Once it is on main, it's public domain. do what ever you want, but leave a comment :D

I just didn't have a better example when I said that.
@Marius What exactly do you mean by "public domain" and why is meta not public domain?

it was a joke
a bad one apparently. sorry for that

Puzzle noob here, I saw a comment in the riddle sandbox to the degree of "a hint should not be encrypted." Can anyone elaborate on this? I thought hints that are riddles themselves is tradition in puzzling.

Hints should be cryptic, not encrypted I believe

user61230
By encrypted, they meant literally encrypted - rendered reversibly unreadable.

understood. I misunderstood that comment, then.

Also, I think the hint in question, once decoded, was the answer rather than a hint
if you look at the edit history, you see that the hint was once very different, it's the original hint that comment pertained to

@Sconibulus, thanks for pointing that out. I should probably delete that comment now.
