@StanShunpike Mostly I write more rock/pop oriented pieces, but I for classes I've taken in the past I've written a ton of different pieces including fugues, inventions, impressionist pieces, serialism pieces, and countless others. When I get some spare time, I would like to go back to writing pieces to play with the boundaries of tonality using concepts like Dual Modality.

Q: Why was a question about form in the Gloria of the Ordinary Mass migrated to Music Fans SE?

Patrx2This question was migrated to Music Fans SE: In the Mass Ordinary, what are the words that should be set to a fugue?. The original title for the question was "What are the words for the Gloria fugue?" Both titles are unfortunate and misleading, because the actual question was: In setting the...

@Dom Dual modality sort of strikes me as a kind of "feel your way around it" technique, which isn't to put it down: Bartók did some marvellous things with it. The closest I've come to that technique was the 2nd Bagatelle, which was C major in the right hand, C minor in the left, and I definitely felt like I was feeling my way through it while I was writing it: "Does this sound right?" "Not... quite." "This?..."

@Patrx2 I view it as more of an exercise in expressin the difference between two modes while exploiting the similarities. I do admit it is at times guess and check but that is more because we're not use to thinking that way. From the two short pieces I wrote using dual modality I learned a lot and can use those ideas elsewhere. It's a different way of thinking "in the box".

@Dom I'll admit I found my toe-dipping to be a similar exercise: it's a very modest piece, but it came out reasonably well. I think part of the reason for the "cut-and-fit" aspects, though, is that it requires a scale of consonance to dissonance and strength of roots be set up between the two layers (a very Hindemith-like exercise) to unify the work. I noticed Bartók doing something akin to this in his forays into the field.

Q: Review opportunities

TimI wonder whether an individual has the chance to review his own post, which has come up for review due to others. I'm sure I've posted and it's been taken down, but I haven't been given this opportunity. If one gets this chance, one could change the post.

@Patrx2 - have reopened the question. Sorry it took a while. Bizarrely, I was hanging out with The Stranglers :-)

@RoryAlsop No worries, Rory, but can we unlock it? It has reappeared locked in its original form, and completely stripped of comments and answer.
Granted, Laurence's answer was pure snark...

5:33 PM
@Patrx2 Okay - sorry for rushing through it. Should be unlocked and open. Not possible to recreate comments though, so my apologies there

6:25 PM
@RoryAlsop No problem, the comments were pretty much related to the situation anyway. So, how did you find yourself hanging with the Stranglers?.... :D
Edited the question, by the way. Hopefully clearer.

6:52 PM
@Patrx2 Many thanks!
@Patrx2 Well, we were meeting up with the owner of Metropolis Records, as we have supported a lot of his bands in the past, and the Rezillos were supporting the Stranglers, so we all wandered down to the venue, then there was a hiccup with guest lists. Luckily my lead singer managed to blag tickets for the record exec. And in return he took us along to the afterparty :-)
So we were drinking with Baz and his girlfriend, who by some coincidence knows my lead singer's wife
And briefly got to chat with JJ
All in all a really cool night

@RoryAlsop So a little scratch-back to get you in, and you find out it's a small world after all, eh? :D

@Patrx2 yup - and just such a nice bunch of guys. Putting up with the fact that we were obviously a wee bit star struck but trying to remain cool :-)

Hahaha! Yeah, my experience is usually that musicians tend to be cool with other musicians. In my day, I've chatted with Sonny Greenwich, Luther Allison, Oliver Jones, and others - all nice, nice people.

7:12 PM
@Patrx2 Nice!
I do like a bit of Sonny Greenwich

@RoryAlsop Yeah. He and Oliver Jones are hometown boys (Montreal). I tend to group Sonny with James Blood Ulmer - not stuff for everyday listening, but ear cleansers.

7:53 PM
Ulmer has done some great stuff. Wish he would've continued with the weird things instead of going off into the blues.

@MeaningfulUsername Yeah. Not immediately ingratiating, but it fell into place well if you listened attentively.
