Hello @tchrist

hi, how can you tell it's a banned user?

The question style, the comment style, etc.
Let me pull up an example; gimme a sec

k

He often starts with "thanks for your reply!" and ends with "so X is slang/not perfect/incorrect"

What a pain in the butt!

8:58 PM
He's persistent for sure.

Makes you wonder whether SO shouldn’t use some of those "alternate" bans, like ghost-bans. Still, seems a bit deceptive to me, appealing though it might sometimes be.

If you're interested, there's a Meta discussion about what to do with him

The "so X is slang" was trolling me into correcting him.

Q: What should we do about users circumventing suspensions?

waiwai933You may be aware that a certain user on EL&U has been suspended for voting abuse and that this user has repeatedly circumvented his/her suspension and continued to ask questions. In addition, this user has plagiarized content extensively, attacked the community, and committed other acts which...

Yeah, he's pretty much just a troll
The Meta post was even before his new suspension

FYI the reason I don't think it's worth flagging a moderator about the maybe half-dozen revenge downvotes I think I've gotten from Carlo is because there are much more important things for them to worry about, like this asshole.
Yes, I've followed the meta post.

9:00 PM
Oh, wasn't sure you'd seen that post
But I think if you have an issue with another user, you should definitely consider flagging
There's three of them, and one of this troll
And soon to be five mods, and one troll

Yes, I'm eager for the election.

Me too

Any idea whether the English Learners thing can come off? I have my doubts, because you won't have good people donating their time there.
But you need that, because the quality on ELU is really low a lot of the time.

I support it because of the quality issue

It feels too much like ESL&U 101

9:02 PM
I know a lot of users who hang out in the usual ELU chat don't answer questions any more because of the quality level

I don't not support it [sic], I just fear it may not fly.

I guess we'll see what happens if it gets into Beta

I've seen a lot of betas die, including ones I enjoyed. Just not enough interest.
But something has to be done for ELU's quality.

I guess that's the natural "survival of the fittest": if it works, great
If not, on to plan B

Don't forget the Tragedy of the Commons.

9:04 PM
True, true

Anyway, thanks for the chat. I need to hurry off to Sunday dinner.

Would you like to come into the usual ELU chat by the way?
I think you'll like the people

I don't know what that is.

Let me send you a link

OK.

9:05 PM

 English Language & Usage: Multi-Layer

Not for the faint of heart or those easily triggered by Englis...
People like Reg, Cerberus, etc. are always there chatting

Ah I see. thanks.

Yup, anyway enjoy your dinner

How do you get to that link normally?

From ELU, there's a "chat" button at the top
Next to "Meta"

Hm, ok.
Before for the longest time I was using Opera, which didn't support chat. I'm using Safari now, which does. Quirky a bit.
