@AlanMunn -- probably not entirely obvious, but in each issue of tugboat, there's a column called "the treasure chest" that lists the new items on ctan. and anything that seems particularly worthwhile is highlighted with an asterisk. so if @cfr posts something new and useful, i could recommend the star treatment. (but probably too obscure for people who don't read documentation anyhow.)

@barbarabeeton I just submitted it. But CTAN might not want it, of course. (Or I might have packaged it wrongly, which I often manage to do.)
@barbarabeeton I am not sure people who don't read documentation are the target audience for additional documentation, so this might not really be a problem ;).

I'm trying to write a function that maps from the quotient set of some equivalence relation on a set X to another set Y, when I write it as $f:X/\sim\to Y$ the right-arrow is like practically touching the quotient set and I don't want that. Is there someway I can adjust this?
I assume people normally denote the quotient set as X/\sim is this wrong? That's how I've always done it but it looks funky.

@Ethan $X/{\sim} shall do the job in all cases

@DavidCarlisle you were right yesterday evening... tex.stackexchange.com/questions/361188/…

9:20 AM
@ilFuria you should post an answer with red double lines with green separation, all those black and white answers are so dull.

@DavidCarlisle fortunately I'm working right now, so I can use my neglected job as an excuse not to do that :D

Q: Does talking to a rubber duck improve programmer performance when debugging?

combinatoricsIn software engineering (especially XP) there is a commonly held belief that talking to a rubber duck will improve performance when debugging problematic code. This technique is referenced in multiple places from well-respected blogs such as Coding Horror (in a post about improving the quality ...

^^ @PauloCereda The answer is No. Whenever I talk to you, I technically procrastinate.

11:40 AM
@yo' awww <3
@AlanMunn ooh let's write a bot
@egreg nice reference to a great movie :)

@PauloCereda I think you agree that ABNTeX is “A. B. something”.

@egreg I was about to comment on your ABNT mention. :) Exactly my thoughts. :)

Guess who answered this tricky question

Q: Extra spacing in \ref or \eqref

RoxaneI changed the equation numbering format to avoid the 0 when I don't have subsubsection. Output ex. : Equation (1.1.a) instead of Equation (1.1.0.a) But now, when I use the \ref or the \eqref commands, they are extra spacing before the parenthesis. Output ex. : ( 1.1.a ) instea...

12:27 PM
@DavidCarlisle I'm working on the ^^@ issue: fingers-crossed

@JosephWright ooh the vim style.

@PauloCereda No, that would be ^@ ;)

@JosephWright ooh

12:41 PM
@PauloCereda for that, you need to answer the question posed above.

@DavidCarlisle oh no

12:55 PM
@PauloCereda I have a present for you. Do you want it? (it will probably reach you next christmas or when you finish your thesis ;-)

@UlrikeFischer oooh a present
@UlrikeFischer OH MY OH MY OH MY

@PauloCereda I take this as yes ;-)

1:14 PM
@egreg @DavidCarlisle Today salsiccia and friarielli!

@CarLaTeX isn't it a bit late?

@ilFuria I've already eaten it! I'm posting only the photo now!

@CarLaTeX Yummy! I still remember a dinner near Castellammare di Stabia, on the mountain, where we had it, together with a bunch of other wonderful dishes. It was something like 25 years ago.

@CarLaTeX I see...

@CarLaTeX where's the pineapple?

1:16 PM
@CarLaTeX I'm suddenly hungry

@egreg Yes it's typical from Naples! Very good!
@DavidCarlisle Food troglodyte! :P
@ilFuria Yay!

@CarLaTeX I learned everything I know about pizza from @egreg, he says ham and pinapple pizza is the best, especially on a "New York" base.

@CarLaTeX I've always wanted to taste a pizza with friarielli, but actually never had one
@DavidCarlisle what's a "New York" base?

@ilFuria just something non Italian to annoy the Italians present;-) (Pizza being a great American dish, don't you know:-)

@DavidCarlisle @egreg wouldn't say such a thing even under torture!

1:24 PM
@CarLaTeX we could test that assertion....

@DavidCarlisle I see... I'm Italian, so you caught me... guilty as charged. A friend of mine calls non-italian pizza prazza since it's not pizza and non-italian people rarely hear the difference
:)

@ilFuria ah. I seem to be outnumbered:-)

@ilFuria You must try it, it's delicious!

@DavidCarlisle indeed you are
@CarLaTeX what? New york base pizza?

@ilFuria Don't listen to David, he's a food troglodyte! :):):)
@ilFuria Hahaha

1:29 PM
@CarLaTeX I will try it, sooner or later... it's just that I don't eat pizza that often, and that I have so many toppings I like...
No @DavidCarlisle before you ask: no pineapple!

@ilFuria Bravo!

@CarLaTeX well being Italian, it's easy for me to reject food-heresy

@ilFuria Yay!!!!!

2:40 PM
@UlrikeFischer Thank you! <3

@CarLaTeX -- looks absolutely yummy! never had friarielli on pizza, but can get it here quickly stir-fried (it's called "broccoli rabe"), and i'm very fond of it. (i might consider substituting anchovies for the salsiccia, but your salsiccia is probably better than the pepperoni that's usually found here as the staple pizza sausage.)

ooh I was late for pizza

3:10 PM
@barbarabeeton You should come to Italy and taste the original one! :):):)
@PauloCereda I've had a very good one, today :)

@CarLaTeX I want pizza :(

@PauloCereda you should come to Italy, too! :):):)

@CarLaTeX I might be late for dinner. :)

@PauloCereda Not for tomorrow's one :):):)

@CarLaTeX :)

4:10 PM

@PauloCereda have you seen this: tex.stackexchange.com/a/361224/101651?

@CarLaTeX ooh :)

4:48 PM
@PauloCereda Listen to @DavidCarlisle and go buy a pineapple 🍍

@egreg oh no

5:09 PM
@UlrikeFischer There will be many, many Christmas Eves before the @PauloCereda - Thesis will be finished ;-)

@ChristianHupfer If the lego duck helps it could be faster. I will sent it asap.

@ChristianHupfer oy
@UlrikeFischer ducks are always welcome. :)

@PauloCereda Add also celery, nuts, strawberries and cabbage.

@UlrikeFischer You should send thesis Lego pieces rather :D @PauloCereda
@PauloCereda <3

@ChristianHupfer <3
@egreg oh my

5:19 PM
@PauloCereda Best pizza ever, for @DavidCarlisle. Maybe Brexit has some benefits.

@egreg :)

5:42 PM
@egreg none spotted so far

@DavidCarlisle You can make up your own rules for pizza.

@egreg hmm

@DavidCarlisle Better than nothing

@CarLaTeX maybe he'll add a pineapple topping

6:04 PM
Hello

@DavidCarlisle Nooooooooo

Pizza again?
btw I'm trying to buy one of tufte's book (quantitative display etc…) do you know where to buy it in europe? The shipping fares from the US are quite high

@ilFuria Have you checked Amazonas? Wait, what is it called?

@Johannes_B Yes I did, I'm a serial compulsive amazonian buyer :). Anyway, it's not available there :(

@ilFuria German site tells me sixty euros. Quite expensive.

6:21 PM
@Johannes_B 50€, and it's not that expensive to me… the problem is that it's not directly available from amazon, so I'd like to find some other trusted vendor… you know…

@ilFuria German book sellers claim that Amaz... is causing them death. For a normal book, they can get it overnight if you want. Maybe ask your local book seller to get the book for you. Might be a bit extra, don't know.

@Johannes_B Ok thanks…

@ilFuria It's a good read

@JosephWright Great! I just finished reading Felici's book… I thought to get another good typography book
I was thinking of something more (La)TeX related, about low level code maybe, but then I didn't know what to choose and steered back to typography

6:50 PM
@ilFuria no square roots:-)

7:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle Other than the ^@ issue, what else is 'new' in LuaTeX v1.04? Just the callback/primitive stuff?

7:36 PM
@JosephWright as far as I can see yes, mainly I think internal refactoring (hence the ^@) and re-arranging libraries still I think pushed by the ffi support for dynamic loading shared libraries stuff

> This is LuaTeX, Version 1.0.5 (TeX Live 2017/W32TeX)
@DavidCarlisle ^^^ From W32TeX
@DavidCarlisle Something's up with the line endings on output, at least on Windows: can you check from Cygwin?

@JosephWright yes Ive got the source of that but I didn't rebuild as the only change was the version string
@JosephWright test case?

@DavidCarlisle Currently working on the ^@ issue and getting very odd diff files!
@DavidCarlisle Looks like they've altered the file writing so you need \n on Windows as well as on Unix, whereas in the past you needed \r\n

7:52 PM
@JosephWright ah, cygwin always used unix style anyway

@DavidCarlisle Yes, that's why I wondered if you'd seen it: I was trying some stuff earlier on (at work) and had some strange line ends but thought it could be a mistake on that one system
@DavidCarlisle I might grab the Mac build from ConTeXt ...

@JosephWright I think only diffs I got were ^^@ related but I'll build 1.5 and re-run the test suite

@DavidCarlisle Any idea of how to test the LuaTeX version from texlua?
@DavidCarlisle Cool
@DavidCarlisle With that at least locally solved, I think I can sort ^@
@DavidCarlisle Don't worry about that: I'll alter l3build for ^@ then you can see what does/doesn't work

@JosephWright print(status.luatex_version) ? (and luatex_revision

@DavidCarlisle Ah, yes

8:00 PM
ooh more changes since I got the first 1.05 (not sure what but svn update just gave me something:-)

@DavidCarlisle Working out how to handle the version: the two numbers are interesting!

@JosephWright same as in tex isn't it? (version+revision)/100 ?

@DavidCarlisle Yes, I just have to hit the right tipping point for the change
@DavidCarlisle Working through the issues: I have to update any test files that contain ^@ so it will take a little while to be sure I have every right

@JosephWright 1.05 just compiling now I'll re-run test suite when its done.

@DavidCarlisle OK: I expect to have an updated l3build within the hour (just want to be sure I have all of this right)

8:20 PM
This is LuaTeX, Version 1.0.5 (TeX Live 2017)
@JosephWright ^^

@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle Updating the 2e test files now: assuming that all goes OK I'll check in l3build and for 2e
@DavidCarlisle Hunt-the-primitives time

@JosephWright more new ones?

@DavidCarlisle Who knows?!

@JosephWright as I looked at a couple of diffs just now and it was all has with internal "tidying" of node pointer handling didn't look the sort of thing to be interface changes (could well be behaviour changes:-)

@DavidCarlisle Based on previous outcomes, I'll wait and see what the test suite says!

8:25 PM
@JosephWright so, should I wait for l3build and 2e testsuite updates now or is it worth kicking off a test run with this setup?

@DavidCarlisle Probably best to wait: I'm nearly done

@JosephWright OK,

@DavidCarlisle Probably need around 15 minutes

8:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle Just tracking down ^@ in various places

8:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle Net connection playing up from my flat :(

@JosephWright some checkins got through? I see the email

@DavidCarlisle Yes: that one went but I need to sort out the 2e side
@DavidCarlisle Just making sure I've fixed all of the .tlg files: needed to update luaotfload on my Windows system, which was problematic with a bust net connection

9:25 PM
@DavidCarlisle I've checked in 2e changes: some things are odd with LuaTeX so I'll leave that until tomorrow

@JosephWright OK updated l3build and 2e, will re-run and we can compare notes tomorrow

Anyone else have issues with TeXShop 3.77 on MacOS Sierra 10.12.4? I just updated the OS and TeXShop contantly crashes. I don't see much discussion about this issue so wondering if I am the only one having this problem. I did have MacTex 2016 installed before upgrading and reinstalled MacTeX2016 hoping that that would resolve the issue, but no such luck. Same issue with other versions as well.

9:43 PM
@PeterGrill A friend of mine reported the same issue. As I never use TeXShop, I can't tell.

:36399186: Good to know that I am not alone then. Was your friend able to resolve the issue?
@egreg: Ah, I see you are a Star Trek fan!

@PeterGrill Not a fan, but I like the first series.

@egreg I am hoping that once my daughter is old enough she and I can watch all the TOS epsiodes again. :-)

yo'
10:29 PM
@barbarabeeton I still don't know whether I shall come to Bachotek :-( There are some issues: It's quite expensive (EUR 275 + fuel about the same price) --- that's a lot. Then, the package I would speak about is not ready (and won't fully be by the time of the conference). And last but not least, I'm again ill (some cold/flu/whatever), which tells me I should relax more, and driving 2x10h is not much relaxing...
... and I don't think my funding will allow me to come to Rio in 2018 :-(
If at least someone travelled with me by car, but I really don't want to travel alone for such a distance :-(
