Hi all. How do I compress PDF files generated by Xelatex?

@manucpp GhostScript

How do I get more info on Ghostscript and how to use it to compress Xelatex PDFs?

@manucpp Ghostscript is a general tool for working with PostScript/PDF files: a search will quickly find things like stackoverflow.com/questions/10450120/…, gist.github.com/firstdoit/6390547, etc.
@manucpp XeLaTeX producing the PDF files doesn't really matter

@JosephWright Please elaborate.

@manucpp A PDF is a PDF: you can compress it by re-writing using Ghostscript whether it was originally written by XeLaTeX, pdfTeX, InDesign, Word, ...

7:41 AM
@JosephWright Oh! I thought I had to do something to .tex files so they generate smaller PDFs. Thanks!

7:53 AM
Hey everyone
Can someone help me out with this question: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/327312/…

2 hours later…
9:27 AM
@S.C. Done.

9:50 AM
@egreg hello from Italy

:32022530 Where, precisely? I might jump on my bike and ride.

> P.S. I shall be retiring from the world at the end of March 2002, and shall not be available on the Net.
Is he dead?
I was about to send a bug report with the patch when I have noticed this.

10:24 AM
@wilx Could be, though that message doesn't necessarily mean that he intended to die in March 2002.

Horror! My gravatar has changed! It's red!

@egreg I thought you changed it, there was a remark about green :-)

@Kurt No, I didn't!

@egreg Looks like many auto-generated gravatars have changed. Mine changed a couple of days ago.

@egreg Seems all avatar has changed, mine too ...

yo'
10:33 AM
@egreg and they all have rounded corners, no?

Q: Why is my profile image different?

LaurelWhen I first signed up on a Stack Exchange site and got a profile image, it was this one (see my current user card): Later, I got Area 51 and SEDE profiles, and my user image there was a different identicon. Because reasons I already know. I would have a picture of it, but that's the problem....

@JosephWright Well, I have changed it back, but it's very annoying

@egreg Manually saved the image?
@egreg Ooh, I see you are a mod on the Italian site nowadays :-)

@JosephWright I've been for a few months.
@JosephWright Yes.
@JosephWright I think that it's a problem with Area51 that started to grab a different gravatar, deploying it on the other sites.

10:54 AM
I see there is a .lang property on glyph nodes in LuaTeX. How can I compare the node's language with Czech?

@wilx You'll need to know the number that's been assigned to Czech: I'd have to look over the babel loading code (assuming LaTeX) to say how :-)
@wilx Actually, probably \l@czech

@JosephWright Hmm, but I am purely in Lua at that point. I tried lang.new("czech") but that is apparently not right.
I can do GLYPH = node.id("glyph") to get glyph node ID. Is there no similar mechanism for languages?
I am looking at 4.7 in luatex.pdf but I do not see a way.

@wilx That's all about loading up hyphenations: I assume you are not doing that so are relying on babel or similar to actually set up the language?

@JosephWright Yes, I am assuming polyglossia or babel sets the language. I just want to compare with Czech so that I limit the transformation only to Czech bits of the text.

11:10 AM
@wilx Like I said, there will be a Lua data structure but I'm not sure of the detail. I'd therefore do something like \catcode`\@=11 \directlua{my_czech_value = \the\l@czech}\catcode`\@=12 after making sure it's defined

11:36 AM
@DavidCarlisle If I use for \GPT@IfFileExists the definition based on \pdf@filesize (from pdftexcmds, not the primitive \pdffilesize) which is defined as \directlua0{oberdiek.pdftexcmds.filesize("\luaescapestring{#1}")} then the luatex example works fine.
\def\GPT@IfFileExists#1{%
\expandafter\expandafter\expandafter\ifx
\expandafter\expandafter\expandafter\relax\pdf@filesize{#1}\relax
\expandafter\ltx@secondoftwo
\else
\expandafter\ltx@firstoftwo
\fi
}%

12:05 PM
@JosephWright Thank you. This works for me. Is \l@czech defined by both Babel and Polyglossia? I can see that at least Polyglossia does define it.

@wilx Yes, comes from babel structures

12:26 PM
Sorry for asking here when it is not strictly TeX: with which notation would you make a modification in a variable apparent? I am currently using an asterisk (C_{f} --> C_{f}^* ) but it can be mistaken for multiplication/convolution in an equation.
Are there guidelines regarding the notation?

12:43 PM
@pogo-otter C_{f} --> C_{f}', perhaps? :)

ah. but it's not a derivation, circumflex is also out of the question (no peak value). It's simply a "stand-in" variable for circuit elements - and the elements are modified, therefor the change in the notation.
A tilde maybe?

@pogo-otter ooh it was a wild guess, sorry. :) Ducks have no contextual train of thought. :)

I am just wondering if anyone knows "official" guidelines like IEEE, ISO, ... just out of curiosity.
(but thanks anyway for suggesting :) )

12:59 PM
@pogo-otter -- i'm surprised that the superscript * could be confused with multiplication (can't say anything about convolution), unless there is no subscript. both the size and position are different, at least with computer modern. you could force it to be even smaller and higher with $C_{f}^{{}^*}$.

the double superscript is a very good idea thanks.
(and after all i could always just define another variable, if it was really reason for misunderstanding.)

1:52 PM
@wilx Thanks a ton :) but not able to understand the answer :(

@S.C. Download the modified skt.c from Gist into your document's directory and just compile it with gcc -o skt skt.c. Then compile your document from the same directory (you probably also need -shell-escape parameter). It worked for me on Cygwin.

yo'
2:07 PM
@pogo-otter i wouodn't ever believe star index could be confused for convolution. I'd suggest C_f', \tilde{C_f} or C_f^\star. There are surely also other options.

2:29 PM
@wilx Thanks. Download the file from gist. It contains 2 files namely fix.patch and skt.c Now If I have my example file as example.skt, should I type gcc -o skt skt.c example.skt and then give an enter in the terminal?

2:48 PM
@yo' thanks, i didn't think of star. It's certainly better fitted than an asterisk. (tilde imho as well)

yo'
The gravatar change is soooooo stupid!!! I can't recognize people now at all! (Including myself) /looking for the "change avatar" button
I hope for the cache to update soon.

@yo' -- yikes! @egreg is back to being a green square, but i'm no longer purple! (at least not on the main list and meta.) just a pale imitation, an imposter!

yo'
3:05 PM
@barbarabeeton yeah, you're shapeless.

@barbarabeeton I had to update my picture manually. :( You might try the same procedure as described in

A: Why is my profile image different?

Caleb Can I get my other icon back or will I be stuck with this new one? Maybe. If you've been using any Stack Exchange site long enough that you've grown attached to your identicon, there's a good chance that it's cached or archived somewhere even if you don't have it yourself. The tool that wor...

yo'
I had my gravvy stored elsewhere as I use it on github too.

@barbarabeeton: ^^ :(

What's odd with the profile picture issue is we've not yet got an official 'we'll fix it' response ...

yo'
@JosephWright well, there's a sorta "we're looking into it" response from M.G.

3:23 PM
@S.C. I was wrong about the -shell-escape option. It seems that it is really just a preprocessor. I have downloaded the mirrors.ctan.org/language/sanskrit/sktdoc.skt documentation file, then I have executed ./skt sktdoc.skt which has produced sktdoc.tex which I have then run through usual LaTeX compilation.

1 hour later…
4:29 PM
@wilx skt test && pdflatex test

yo'
@egreg yeah, or use arara
Damn the avatars will be confusing me for ages!

4:45 PM
@PauloCereda I heard news about Dilma!

@egreg I'm watching the news as we speak!

@PauloCereda Is the new president better? ;-)

@egreg Nope. :) Birds of a feather. :)
@egreg But the first lady is cute, at least. :)

@PauloCereda :)

Marcela Tedeschi Araújo Temer (born May 16, 1983) is the wife of the current interim President of Brazil, Michel Temer. == Early life == Marcela Tedeschi Araújo was born on May 16, 1983 in Paulínia, São Paulo, to Carlos Antônio de Araújo and Norma Tedeschi. After graduating from the Escola Estadual Porphyrio da Paz, in her native Paulínia, Marcela worked as a receptionist for the newspaper O Momento. In 2002, at the age of nineteen, she won the title of Miss Paulínia, then moving on to share the state title as Miss São Paulo. In 2002 Marcela accompanied her uncle Geraldo, a Paulínia munic...

4:52 PM
@PauloCereda She's half Italian as well

@egreg ooh :)

@PauloCereda I deduced it from her mother's name

@egreg Indeed.
@egreg: now they are voting if Dilma keeps her political powers.

@wilx Yes that option was not needed. Its indeed working well. Thanks for the great help ):)

5:23 PM
@UlrikeFischer yes I'll do something along those lines
@egreg we've done Italy now:-) walked over the border for 10 minutes from Rateče

@DavidCarlisle I've seen that place several times. Not really much to see over the border. Are you at Kranjska Gora?

5:43 PM
@egreg yes

Anyone have any insights into what is happening here:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{biblatex}
\addbibresource{biblatex-examples.bib}
\begin{document}
\makeatletter
\immediate\write\@auxout{\string\global\string\providetoggle{foo}}
%\immediate\write\@auxout{\string\let\string\relax\string\relax}
\makeatother
\cite{aksin}
\end{document}
It is like the `\global` is not being used.
Opps it has nothing to do with biblatex ...

@StrongBad no particular reason to believe \global would work with a macro such as \providetoggle (you'd have to look at its definition pretty carefully:-)

6:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle From my look at the code, the behaviour otherwise, and egreg's answer to a different question, it seems like it should work.
Oh, no it isn't the same. It is the second loading of the aux file when \providetoggle doesn't do anything.

3 hours later…
8:38 PM
@PauloCereda Surely you don't believe this.
@UlrikeFischer I see you are another changed profile image.

@AlanMunn Do you? :)

@PauloCereda Birds of a feather? No way. There's simply no evidence for that claim, neither in terms of actual corruption nor in terms of their politics.

@AlanMunn Brazilian politics is grounded on corruption since empire. Political parties are just a mere formality. :)

@AlanMunn Hm. Yes depending on the size it changes. But more disturbing: I (and @DavidCarlisle and @PauloCereda) seem to have lost my last name in the chat. How do I repair this?

@UlrikeFischer oh no

8:48 PM
@UlrikeFischer No idea (and I see your full names.)
@PauloCereda This is sidestepping the point...

@UlrikeFischer Seems to depend on zoom level/width of browser window.

@AlanMunn Actually, I think it indicates it's a matter of time for bad things to emerge. I don't like our (former) president at all nor the party behind it, but the alternative is just another instance of bad stuff to grow. :)

@TorbjørnT. Yes, if I make my zoom a bit larger, then the last names disappear for the longer names. I only retain mine because it's only 9 characters.
@PauloCereda You don't think there's been more than enough time for 'bad things' to be found? If there were real bad things implicating Dilma, they would have impeached her on those, but they were unable to.

@AlanMunn I don't believe the system, as more than halft of the lawmakers is being investigated. Every politician here is corrupt, and that's very close to an axiom for us.

@PauloCereda Right, but even the right seems to agree that Dilma isn't corrupt.

9:03 PM
@AlanMunn She's more incompetent than corrupt, but she cannot plead ignorance of what happened to Petrobras. Granted, one error could not propagate into different instances (from a company director to president).

9:19 PM
@PauloCereda More incompetent than corrupt - is that good or bad?

@StefanKottwitz Ducks are very naïve, I have no idea. :)

@PauloCereda Are ducks the contrary or the same? >:-)
@PauloCereda Today I saw a nice Latex MWE. Wanna see?
One of my all-time-favourites: My #latex #corset by @IsabeauOuvert <3 #CorsetLover #HourglassFigure #Korsett https://t.co/TG268O7oE3

@StefanKottwitz ooh Schrödinger duck!
@StefanKottwitz I clicked the link... by accident.

I think the example above is not minimal.

@StefanKottwitz I was just about to say this. :)

9:24 PM
@StefanKottwitz \huge I won't comment.

@AlanMunn She's from my home town Hamburg. I should ask here to come to the LaTeX regular's table.

yo'
9:40 PM
@StefanKottwitz Yes! Do that please!!! :D

9:50 PM
@PauloCereda You join?

2 hours later…
11:21 PM
@StefanKottwitz :)
