6:38 AM
Good Morning.

7:07 AM
@yo' If i attend a user meeting one day, i will be early to prepare some cookies ;-)

Depending on the cookies, you have baked or you are baked afterwards.

@MaestroGlanz Good morning! Any good beer last night?

7:43 AM
@egreg Would I be up so early?

yo'
8:04 AM
btw, I'm ill with pharyngitis and I got some antibiotics. Which means I have some time spare. Any ideas for length 9 to 14 snippets? :) codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/44680/…
@Johannes_B I meant, no cookies for me, my version of something does not support that Uchar

@yo' I can put up a geocache near the autobahn an when you drie by you can log and get some cookies :-)

@yo' For 13: \chardef\#=`# that shows the ASCII representation of numbers

1 hour later…
yo'
9:17 AM
Is there any standard way how to produce \twocolumn header that is longer than one page?

9:27 AM
@yo' you mean longer as in \enlargethispage or longer as in page breaking?

yo'
@DavidCarlisle page breaking
I'm currently using \vsplit to \textheight in a \loop \ifdim

@yo' For 11, \newcommand
@yo And, for 10, {1\over 2}

@yo' yes that or use multicol, or possibly you could abuse afterpage to use \twocolumn[..] around the stuff that it normally re-inserts at the top of the page after the actual afterpage argument. Perhaps.

yo'
9:42 AM
@DavidCarlisle multicol is missing important (unavoidable) features.
I just realized how difficult it is to start rewriting your own code to a nicer version :(
Goodness!
!immediate!write18[pwd | sed -e 's:.*/\(.\)\|/$:\1:g' | sed -e 's:\(.*\):\\def\\X@swd{\1}:' > !jobname.swd]

10:21 AM
Good morning from your friendly duck! <3

yo'
10:37 AM
@PauloCereda morning, pal!

@yo' Hi Tom!
Winter is coming, winter is coming!
It is a freezing 17C here! Brrrrrr!

@PauloCereda Summer is coming, summer is coming! We have a pleasant 16C here! ;-)

@PauloCereda Only on HBO.

@egreg ooh :)
@TorbjørnT. I see what you did there. :)

yo'
10:58 AM
@egreg it was snowing on Sunday

@yo' At my sister's they were below 0 (altitude 500m).

11:23 AM
This morning we had about 10 to 15cm snow at my parents hometown - Bavaria 500-600m

The best part of being a duck is... well... being a duck!

@MaestroGlanz It should be normal in Autumn. Oh, wait! Is it Autumn?

@egreg Nah, that happened as far as I remember in 2012 and 2013 around the same time.

@PauloCereda what exactly is the atmospheric pressure required to freeze water at 17C ?

11:44 AM
@DavidCarlisle I have no idea. :)

7
Q: Freezing point of water with respect to pressure.

Marwan DoumitI know when the pressure is reduced, the boiling point of water is reduced as well. But how does the pressure affect the freezing point of water ? In a low pressure environment is the freezing point more then 0 C or less ?

12:06 PM
@egreg oh

12:37 PM
Close to wiping out El Capitan forever!

@PauloCereda Don't like it?

@JosephWright Too much closed stuff, I guess. :) I am not sure if I should keep it. But I want to install Linux in my iMac. :)

@PauloCereda Ah
@PauloCereda We had a guy last year as a project student who had a Mac with OS X, Windows and Linux (2 versions) on it: not entirely sure it was practical :-)

@JosephWright The last straw was getting rid of my wireless Apple keyboard and replacing with a nice wired Microsoft keyboard. El Capitan was complaining all the time, and most of the keymaps were gone!

@PauloCereda I've messed about with dual boots before but not for a while, and I mainly want my laptop to work. That said, the current reviews suggest next time I'll probably be looking at a Dell, so Linux it may well be.

12:43 PM
@JosephWright this bloke surely had some extra space! :)

@PauloCereda He'd removed the CD drive and replaced with a second HD

@JosephWright My new laptop is a Dell, it is insanely good. I got an ultrathin.

@PauloCereda The space isn't really an issue: with Parallels I have Windows and Ubuntu installed anyway
@PauloCereda Yes, that's the one (or the family) I was thinking of
No plans to change laptop

@JosephWright This is my second Dell laptop (and my fourth Dell machine overall). I am very satisfied with it, the battery is pretty good, and Fedora runs smoothly. :)

1 hour later…
2:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle It has a use in SignWriting.

1 hour later…
3:10 PM
@AlanMunn I've enjoyed the discussion here :D english.stackexchange.com/a/321764

@percusse Thank The Flying Spaghetti Monster for that. :D

@PauloCereda Check the comments for a nerd anger fight. It's amazing :)

@PauloCereda Indeed: touched by his noddly appendage

@percusse LOLOLOL

any math geeks around that could help me explain how to get from e^x to 2^x?

3:21 PM
@naphaneal $2^x=\exp(\log(2^x))=\exp(x\log2)=e^{x\log2}$
@naphaneal Conversely, $e^x=2^{x/\log2}$

@egreg let e=2 is easier

@DavidCarlisle British style math?

@egreg accurate and concise, like most of my answers here

thx, @egreg

4:03 PM
@MikeRenfro: The other badge should be delivered later on ;-)

4:51 PM
I hate Apple! My legimate El Capitan install disk could not be verified! It's a bug in the installer and the only solution is to download the new DMG from App Store, taking about 55 hours!

@PauloCereda The dark side is strong in the Apple ;-)

@ChristianHupfer :)
Ducks don't like proprietary formats. :)

5:20 PM
55hrs?@PauloCereda why not go to the next Apple store and get an image on disc?

@PauloCereda 55 hours -- isn't this your average travel time in the shaky bus? ;-)

@naphaneal It's some issue with the Apple mirrors, it happens with Xcode as well. And IIRC Apple does not provide media for OSX anymore, only digital packages from the App Store. :(
@naphaneal: not even the last XONE game I got (30GB) took so long: 10 hours max.
@ChristianHupfer Close. :)

@PauloCereda Last time I checked, the local Apple store geniuses could be convinced to hand over an image on a stick

@naphaneal Oh we don't have the geniuses here. :) There are only two Apple stores in Brazil.

@PauloCereda what about Apple certified stores?

5:29 PM
@naphaneal Nope. :)

@PauloCereda well, you're screwed...

@naphaneal o.O

1 hour later…
6:46 PM
Is there any TikZ package or library that can draw Venn diagrams or set diagrams?

yo'
@ChristianHupfer I doubt there's anything specifically for this

@yo' Well, I have do try with overlapping 'shapes' then :-(

7:02 PM

@Kaveh1000 Oh -- thank you very much! That looks very promising!

@ChristianHupfer :-) looks like lovely simple syntax. Tikz is incredible!!

Great, another dd usage.

@PauloCereda: dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/hda? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Exactly! :)

7:13 PM
@PauloCereda Luckily we're no nerds :D

@ChristianHupfer <about to press Enter as root with a copied/pasted command from the internet> Yay!

@PauloCereda Press any key -- damn, I can't find the 'any' key ;-)

@ChristianHupfer <3

@PauloCereda hopefully it's the 'read all mail' command with 'really fast switch' a.k.a. rm -rf *

@naphaneal :)

7:42 PM
[paulo@cambridge usbstick] $ sudo dmg2img -v -i Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg -o /dev/sdb
@ChristianHupfer, @naphaneal: ^^ :)

8:22 PM
New, completely pointless, mod power has appeared

@JosephWright ”New Accessible List of Recent Chat Flags”?

@egreg Yup
@egreg Some of the chat rooms are strange places

@JosephWright I guess so!
@JosephWright Happily, I see nothing! :)

@egreg I get to see the lists of all flags on chat.stackexchange.com, I think: a long but useless list

@PauloCereda we're all dressed and ready, hope you've got the venues ready:-) bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/36150239

8:35 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh nice suit!
Duck-approved kit. :)

@DavidCarlisle I see the lawn bowls team didn't make the podium demos :-)

@David, @Joseph: Is Boaty McBoatface going to happen? :)

@DavidCarlisle Will Tom Daley just receive that kit he's wearing?

@egreg Quite cheap, I hope
@egreg Probably gets a branded micro-towel too
@DavidCarlisle Thanks for chasing up on geometry

@JosephWright I guess there are more to turn up:-)

9:18 PM
Hiya

9:40 PM
@Danu Hi!

Heyo
Since you work on homological algebra, I wonder if you have some insight on how to best typeset "diagram chases"
In particular, I'm trying to find a way to indicate which parts are important/"nontrivial conclusions" in a given diagram chase

10:14 PM
@Danu Pass. ;-)
@Danu They're always a mess.

:(
@egreg I've resorted to coloring parts of my commutative diagrams

@Danu Might be; I was thinking to solid versus dashed arrows

yo'
10:36 PM
@egreg I've got better experience with thick lines, unless you use them for something else

Hmm... Yeah, maybe @egreg

@yo' Whatever. I usually just tell in the comments to the diagram what's the main point.

Hey guys, anybody interested in Bitcoins? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/306754/…

yo'
@VincentVerheyen seeing the output, I hope the answer is "no"

Anonymous
@yo' Not even the images?

Anonymous
@yo' Then how did he do it? It's important maybe to note that Satoshi Nakamoto did not know how to make .svg's (I'll add that info to the question in a bit, with a reference).
